Some people say that humans are just advanced apes. Is that true? Join us as we explore what it means to be made in the image of God. This video is recommended for students in kindergarten through second grade.
- 00:16
- Well, hello and welcome to The Zone, I'm your host, Big Wave Dave. So the Bible says that we were made in the image of God.
- 00:24
- What does that mean? Well, that's what we're going to talk about. In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.
- 00:31
- And the Bible tells us that he did all of that in just six days. Now on day six,
- 00:37
- God created all the land animals, and he also created people. Now, the other day
- 00:43
- I overheard somebody saying, you know, humans are just advanced apes. That we're just animals.
- 00:50
- Is that true? Here's what we're going to look at. We're going to look at the differences between apes and humans.
- 00:57
- Are you ready? Let's go. Okay, so let's start with the skull. This is a human skull.
- 01:05
- This is the skull of an ape. Do you see any differences? Let's take a closer look.
- 01:12
- This here is a replica, or a model, of a human skull. It's not real, don't worry.
- 01:19
- So a couple things here. I see the teeth, the face, but notice about the face that it's very flat.
- 01:25
- It's like straight up and down. But the thing that really catches my eye is this.
- 01:30
- This is called the brain cavity. And it's really big. Do you know why? Because people are really smart.
- 01:40
- Let's take a look at the ape skull. Wow, it is really different.
- 01:45
- Okay, so I notice the teeth. Look at these brow ridges. Apes have these big ridges around their eyes.
- 01:53
- But one thing that really catches my attention is how sloped this face is.
- 01:58
- And then if you look at the brain cavity, it's really small. Clearly, we are different than apes.
- 02:05
- So there are lots of differences, but this is the one that I want you to remember. Ape skulls are sloped and have smaller brains.
- 02:13
- You got it? Cool, let's move on. Let's talk about fingers and toes.
- 02:20
- Now on the playground, have you ever tried to swing from the monkey bars? It's hard, but not for apes.
- 02:27
- You see, apes have long, curved fingers and toes. It helps them climb and swing from things.
- 02:34
- You can see from these pictures here that we are clearly different. Why is that? Because God designed their hands and feet to climb trees.
- 02:42
- Speaking of climbing, check this guy out. He is so cool. Wow, he's really good at that, because that is what
- 02:54
- God designed him to do. All right, let's review. Apes' skulls are sloped and they have smaller brains.
- 03:02
- Apes' fingers and toes are long and curved, because God designed it that way so that they can climb trees.
- 03:09
- Let's talk about wrists. Have you ever seen an ape knuckle walk? It's amazing how fast they can go.
- 03:17
- Now, if you or I tried that, we would hurt ourselves. Here's why. Apes have special bones in their wrists that lock into place for knuckle walking.
- 03:26
- You see, God designed them to walk on all fours. That is one really cool ape, don't you think?
- 03:36
- Okay, so those are some of the physical differences between us and apes. Why is that important?
- 03:43
- Because when you get older and we start talking about fossils, it's gonna be important to remember the differences between humans and apes.
- 03:54
- Let's talk about the image of God now. So in Genesis 127, it says that God created man in his own image.
- 04:04
- Let's take a look at what that means. First of all, we are not animals. In fact,
- 04:11
- Genesis 126, it says that we are in charge of the animals. God made us to rule over the fish and the birds and the livestock and all the wild animals and creatures that move along the ground.
- 04:23
- So this is how God set things up. We report to God, but we are in charge of the animals.
- 04:29
- Now, it's really important that we are kind and take care of animals. Okay, so we're not animals, we're in charge of the animals.
- 04:37
- Number two is, we are very creative. So what does an ape think about?
- 04:43
- Well, I would imagine they think about food, and they think about other apes, and how not to get eaten by tigers.
- 04:49
- What about people? What do people think about? Well, yeah, we think about food, of course. But we also think about art, and music, and medicine, and technology, and relationships.
- 05:01
- So people are so amazing and creative. I've got some videos to show you. Check this out.
- 06:18
- Wasn't that amazing? So when was the last time you saw an ape make a spaceship, or a car, or a building, or music, or paintings, or anything like that?
- 06:31
- You see, we are creative just like God. All right, let's finish up. We are not animals.
- 06:38
- We are creative. Third, we were created for close relationships with other people and with God.
- 06:45
- You see, we are not animals. We're not apes. You are a child of God.
- 06:53
- Always want you to remember that. Well, that's all the time we have together. I'm Big Wave Dave.
