Had to grab something here. I dumbfounded, okay? You know, the ancient churches, you know, and there are churches that still do this today as part of their worship.

They oftentimes will confess one of the creeds, alright? And the creeds, if you think about it, the

Apostles' Creed and the Nicene Creed, they are highly compressed statements, you know, if you would.

They kind of give us the overarching understanding of the Scripture themselves. So for instance, the

Apostles' Creed, okay? This is one of the creeds that Christians have historically confessed, and I remember the day when

I was a kid that evangelicals still would find a way to have a confession of the

Apostles' Creed be part of a standard worship service. Yeah, it's fallen out of favor over the past few decades, but I've lived long enough to remember that there were churches that did this regularly, and those of you who are old like me, you'd say, yeah, that's true.

That's true, because it's true. But listen to this, I believe in God the Father Almighty, the

Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the

Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.

He descended into hell. Third day, He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven. He sits at the right hand of God the

Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the

Holy Christian Church, communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.

Highly compressed, you know, these are the basics of the Christian faith. The Nicene Creed, in the portion as it relates to Jesus Christ, it says this, and I believe in one

Lord Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all world, God of God, light of light, very

God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father by whom all things were made, and listen to these words, who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven, and He was incarnate by the

Holy Spirit of the Virgin Mary, and He was made man, and He was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate, suffered, was buried.

Third day, He rose again according to the Scriptures, ascended into heaven, sits at the right hand of the

Father. So you get a note here, the ancient church confessed what God did in creating us, in redeeming us, sanctifying us, you know, in kind of the three major articles of the of the creeds there.

Hang on a second here. See, yeah, I'm kind of in the mood where it's like, you know, let's take a look at something.

I want to... I think it's in 1st Timothy 4. Yeah. Now, the

Spirit expressly says, in latter times, some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and the teachings of demons.

Yeah, that, yeah, that, I think that's a good way to put it. 2nd Timothy 3 then says this, understand this, in the last days there'll be, there come times of difficulty.

People will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self -control, brutal, not loving the good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness but denying its power.

Avoid such people. I mean, so if you are attending a church service and your pastor stands up and says, all right, let's do some confessions here, and it includes,

I'm good looking and stuff like this. This is the narcissistic creed here.

Let me back this up. Here we go. Let's make some confessions. Shout that with me. Shout, I'm strong.

I'm happy. I'm good looking. I'm favored. I'm charming.

I'm sophisticated. And I declare, I'm a threat to hell.

No, you're not. You're clearly under the power of hell. You're under the dominion of darkness.

With a confession like that, you know, what was the devil's great confession regarding himself, by the way?

You can find that, let me pull this up, in Isaiah 14, the devil's great confession.

This sounds like the way the devil talks about himself, by the way. So let's see here. Oh, how you have fallen from heaven, oh day star, son of the dawn.

How you are cut down to the ground, you who laid low the You said in your heart,

I will ascend to heaven above the stars of God. I will set my throne on high.

I will sit on the mount of assembly in the far reaches of the north. I will ascend above the heights of the clouds.

I will make myself like the most high. I'm pretty sure hang on a second here that we heard something akin to that.

And I declare I'm a threat to hell. No, you're not.

When I wake up in the morning, there's more? The devil says, oh no, they're awake again.

This is such foolishness. Do you not even understand the enemy we have in the devil?

I mean, Christ taught us to pray, lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.

And you think that you're such a threat to hell that the devil rolls his eyes and shakes and goes into the fetal position and goes, oh no, they're awake.

Oh no. Oh my word. You can be seated everywhere. I want to talk to you tonight out of my spirit about...

You want to talk to me out of where? Out of your spirit. The job of a pastor is to preach the

Word. You're gonna talk to me out of your spirit. After a confession like that, your spirit's clearly under the power of the evil one.

Backing that up. You can be seated everywhere. I want to talk to you tonight out of my spirit about operating in the supernatural.

Operating in the supernatural. Why are these people not fleeing the building going, run away, there's a wolf.

He's not even wearing his sheepskin. I mean, he's in full wolf mode, and they're all, praise the

Lord. What has happened to the church, man? Right now, and I want you to turn me to John chapter 6 verse 60, right now...

All right, John 6 verse 60. Let's go ahead and get our Bible over there real quick. John 6.

All right, verse 60. Love John 6. It's a great chapter. Okay, but verse 60.

When many of his disciples heard this, they said, it's a hard saying, who can listen to it. What are you talking today about?

All right. Yeah, listen to...

We'll just apply some context to it now, shall we? Okay, this is after Jesus performs the miracle of feeding the 5 ,000

Jews in the wilderness, okay? That was the men, there were also women and children that were not counted, and so they wanted to make king by force, and then

Jesus says, he's the bread who came down from heaven, and that anyone who eats this bread will never die.

And the Jews went, huh? What? Right, and so Jesus kept doubling down and getting clearer and clearer.

You got to eat my flesh and drink my blood. The Jews disputed among themselves, saying, how can this man give us his flesh to eat?

So Jesus said, amen, amen. Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you.

Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life. I will raise him up on the last day, for my flesh is true food, my blood is true drink.

Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him, as the

Living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father. So whoever feeds on me, he also will live because of me.

Tough text, tough text, has implications regarding the Lord's Supper. This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like the bread the

Fathers ate and died. Whoever feeds on this bread will live forever. So Jesus said these things in the synagogue at Capernaum, and when many of his disciples heard it, they said, whoa, whoa, this is a hard saying.

Who can listen to it? So Jesus, knowing in himself that his disciples were grumbling about this, said to them, do you take offense at this?

What then if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before? It is the Spirit who gives life, the flesh is of no help at all.

The words that I have spoken to you, they are spirit and life, but there are some who do not believe, for Jesus knew from the beginning who those were who did not believe, and who it was who would betray him.

And this is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted to him by the Father. And so after this, after this, many of Jesus's disciples turned back and no longer walked after, walked with Jesus.

So Jesus said to the twelve, do you want to go away as well? Peter said,

Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, and we have believed, we have come to know that you are the

Holy One of God. Alright, so there's your passage in context.

We'll just kind of leave it out there right now and see where David Crank is gonna go with this, because now we know what this text is about.

He's gonna just jump into John 6 verse 60, parachute in without any context?

Well when somebody does that, generally what they're trying to do is rip a passage out of context in order to roll it up into the theology they're spewing, rather than the theology that's revealed in that particular text.

Operating in the supernatural, operating in the supernatural. Right now, and I want you to turn with me to John chapter 6 verse 60, right now there's a whole lot of natural in the world.

Now the supernatural, it's kind of like, it's a whole lot of natural in the world.

Gotta back that up, I want to hear him say it again. And I want you to turn with me to John chapter 6 verse 60.

Right now there's a whole lot of natural in the world. Now the supernatural, it's kind of like a car.

Have you ever seen a souped -up car? Maybe the red light and the guy had a hood that was lifted high because there was so much under the hood and maybe big racing slicks on the back.

He can't even put regular fuel in this bad boy, it's high octane. And he comes up and it's like...anybody

ever heard that? Which is the opposite from a Ford Fusion. Can I get an amen up in here? Something souped up, this car is souped up.

Well when you received Jesus, the Holy Spirit came to live and abide on the inside of you.

True, Christians are indwelled by the God, the Holy Spirit. Indeed, that's true. If you were to look under your hood, it doesn't look like a

Neon. You know, they call it a Dodge Neon because when you get in. All right, so you're giving me an illustration without exegeting a text.

The purpose of sermon illustrations is to help you better understand a biblical text.

So show me then how your metaphor here helps me better understand

John 6 verse 60. Knee on the dash, but you don't look like a

Neon, you don't look like a Fusion, you look like a souped -up muscle car ready to do kingdom exploits for Jesus.

Mopar, you know, with a big old...and I get ready to do kingdom exploits. Where does it say that in Scripture?

I mean, I agree that Christians, all Christians have the Holy Spirit, they're indwelled by the Holy Spirit, no doubt about it, but is that the purpose?

The Holy Spirit is the one who produces the fruit of the Spirit within us. The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, gentleness, self -control.

Are those the exploits you're talking about? Because it's God the Holy Spirit that produces the fruit of the

Spirit in us. Supernatural, so operating in the supernatural, there's so many supernatural things that happen throughout the

Bible, but the first scripture I want to go to here is chapter 6 of John, and chapter 6 has said, and when

Jesus knew in himself that his disciples had complained about this, he said to them, does this offend you?

I want you to just picture this, he knew in himself. So Jesus, verse 61, knowing in himself that his disciples were grumbling.

Jesus is the Son of God in human flesh, and you're going to just avoid what this passage is teaching, and you're going to go to the incarnate

Son of God, who is...he has two natures in one person.

By the way, that's how the hypostatic union works. Have you ever heard that phrase, by the way? Hang on a second here, let's go to Romans chapter 1.

All right, so Romans chapter 1, Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, which he promised beforehand through the prophets in the

Holy Scriptures concerning his son, who was descended from David according to the flesh, and was declared to be the

Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord.

So Jesus has both a divine nature and a human nature.

Let me show you another text in this regard, Matthew chapter 1. Matthew chapter 1,

I need to get past the genealogy to where it talks about the birth of Christ. Here's what it says,

Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph before they came together, she was found to be with child from the

Holy Spirit, and her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly.

But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take

Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you shall call his name

Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins. All this took place to fulfill what the

Lord had spoken by the prophet. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name

Immanuel, which means God with us.

Jesus is both God and man. Now think of it this way, okay, so the technical term that we use for the

Incarnate Son of God is we call it the hypostatic union. That's a big old word, but hypostasis means personal in the

Greek, so the hypostasis. So let me explain how this works. So you, you watching

Fighting for the Faith right now, you have a body, you have a soul, right?

And so there's not two of you, no, there's only one of you. There's only one.

And so the flesh and the soul come together in a hypostasis, in a personal union, and so everything you do, you do both with your soul and your body.

You can't do it otherwise, because if you were to try to accomplish something with only your body and not your soul, your soul would have to be separated from you, and you tear those, you tear that hypostasis apart, that's called death, okay?

So in the same way, then, Jesus Christ, he has a human body, he has a human soul, and he also has the divine nature.

In Jesus, the whole fullness of the deity dwells bodily. That's in Colossians chapter 2,

I no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, not according to Christ, for in him, in Christ, the whole fullness of the deity dwells bodily.

So the idea, then, is that there's one Jesus, there's not two, all right? There's one Jesus, and he is comprised of a human nature and the divine nature of the

Son of God, and to one hypostasis, one person, okay?

So everything Jesus does, from walking on the water, to being hungry, to bleeding and dying for your sins, he does with both of his natures that have come together in one personal union.

That's again, the hypostatic union. There's not two Jesuses, there's only one

Jesus, and that's the whole point. In him, the whole fullness of the deity dwells bodily. So when you read in a text like John 6, 61,

Jesus knowing in himself the disciples were grumbling about this, this is by virtue of the hypostatic union, all right?

So Christ's divine and human nature working together, Jesus knows things, right?

He can read minds, you and I can't, all right? So keep that in mind. We're dealing with the text that touches on the

Incarnation and what's known as the hypostatic union. But rather than teach what the text is about, oh, well, he's got to make it about us, because he remembered the creed at the beginning of this service.

I am good -looking. Yeah, that was part of their statement of faith. The Holy Spirit's on the inside of your recreated human spirit, and you have an action from the

Right, because Jesus is the one Jesus, okay? He has a human nature and a divine nature in one union.

Son of God as a believer who is indwelled by the Holy Spirit, that's the same error that Francis Chan engaged in.

Know it in your knower. People say, something told me, women's intuition. It's the Holy Ghost, and Jesus has got the

You already know what to do. Oftentimes, you just don't do it because we're too naturally minded instead of supernaturally minded, and some people...

He didn't even address what the text is about, and wow, this is bad. Heavenly minded, they're no earthly good, but there's a lot of people who are so earthly minded, they're no heavenly good.

And so here in the quote -unquote pandemic, when people are freaking out and losing their mind,

I want you to stay true to the Holy Spirit on the inside of your spirit, so you know which way to go.

I don't recall it being that bad when I reviewed it. You know, there's a system I go through for, you know, dealing with segments on fighting for the faith.

And yeah, so by the way, we as Christians, what is it that prepares us, helps us to know what to do in times of trouble, like pandemics and stuff like that?

Well, the Apostle Paul says to young pastor Timothy, pastor of one of the congregations in the city of Ephesus, you, however, followed my teaching, my conduct, my aim in life, my faith, my patience, my love, my steadfastness, my persecutions and sufferings that happened to me at Antioch, Iconium, Lystra, which persecutions

I endured, yet from them all the Lord rescued me. Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, while evil people and impostors will go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived.

But as for you, continue in what you have learned. Have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.

You know, a comic book, but how many of y 'all thank God for a church that teaches the Word? No, you don't.

So, all right, let's see here. I probably moved it along. All right, so we got to go back to John chapter 6, and he went down to verse 63, and let's put it back in context here.

So the idea then here is that Gnosticism teaches that somehow the flesh isn't significant, or that it's bad, or whatever, that the real you is the spiritual you.

You do understand that as Christians, we are taught in Scripture that we will all be raised bodily from the grave, and we will exist as human beings with glorified bodies in the new earth forever and ever.

Okay? So you, by virtue of your personal union between a physical body and a spirit, you are one person.

There's not two of you. There's not the body you and the spirit you, and to say that the real you is simply your spirit and has nothing to do with your flesh, that's false.
