Scottish church. Yes, Kirk. And he was just not too far from Aberdeen.

But in 1874, he was the youngest son of a Baptist minister. He spent some of his boyhood years also in Perth.

And then his family moved to London when Oswald was 15. And shortly after that, he made a profession of faith.

And they were attending, at that time, the Rhylane Baptist Church. And so this marked a period of rapid growth spiritually for him.

And along with an intense struggle on his part to find what God's purpose was for his life.

Now, he was a very gifted young artist and musician. And he actually attended

London's Royal Academy of Art. I don't know how royal it was, but it was royal.

Sensing God's direction to be an ambassador for God in the world of art and music.

Well, while there, he began to struggle with that path. And he ended up, while he was studying at the

University of Edinburgh, made a decision to go into ministry. And he ended up going to Dunnan College near Glasgow.

And he remained there both as a student and later a mentor for nine years. And then in 1906, he came to the

US. He went to God's Bible School in Cincinnati, Ohio.

He also went to the Tokyo Bible School in Japan. And then he came back to London.

And he began to teach. He was a principal and one of the lead teachers at the

Bible Training College in London. That was from 1911 to 1915. And then he became the

YMCA chaplain to the British Columbia soldiers in Egypt. He died in Cairo after complications from an emergency appendectomy at the age of 43.

One of the things he did, and I wanted to read a few of these and then we'll have our time of prayer, was he made it a habit of posting, both at the school and the

YMCA, daily quips, or quotes, or sayings, or something that would spark thought and focus the minds of these young men on things of the word.

He also had a sense of humor. While he was in Egypt, they had a significant deluge that caused a flood in the camp there.

And on the board outside that day, he said, we're closed due to submarine maneuvers.

So I don't know how much water they got, but they got brilliant. When he passed away, his bride began to put together his works and his sayings and some of his lessons and those things.

And it was also carried on into the 60s and the 70s, 80s, and 90s, 19s, by their daughter, their only daughter, their only child.

And some of these are thought -provoking. And so I'm going to read you some from the month of January and one from February.

It is a great moment when we realize we have the power to trample on certain moods, a tremendous emancipation to get rid of every kind of self -consciousness and heed only one thing, the relationship between God and ourselves.

January 10th. The Christian life is the simplest, the gayest, the most regardless -of -consequences life, lived as it is taught by Jesus.

The plan of our life comes through the haphazard moments, but behind it is the order of God.

Prayer with most of us is turned into pious platitude. It is a matter of emotion, mystical communion with God.

January 22nd. The resentment of discipline of any kind will warp the whole life away from God's purpose.

January 25th. That we may know what is the hope of his calling.

Sooner or later, we must come either with a sense of havoc or a sense of rejoicing to Jesus' standard for us.

Do not be disobedient to the heavenly vision. There is only one purpose for your life, and that is the satisfaction of our

Interest is natural. Attention must be by effort.

One of the great needs of the Christian life is to have a place where we deliberately attend to the realities of life.

That is the real meaning of prayer. You know, as I read those, that caused so many stirrings of thoughts and many times remembrance of scripture and situations.

And, you know, regardless how haphazard things are, God has an order behind it.

And, you know, 2020 has been that. Today has been that.

We found some more news that we'll discuss in a minute. But God calls us again, and I shared this with the guys,

I think, the other morning, in Joshua chapter 1. In the second half of that, or the first half of the scripture there, he talks about being strong and courageous three times in a few verses.

Joshua 1. Just as I have been with Moses, I will be with you.

I will not fail you or forsake you.

Be strong and courageous. For you shall give this people possession of the land which

I swore to your fathers to give them. Only be strong and courageous.
