00:16
Well, good Monday morning to you. How was your weekend? I hope your second Sunday of Advent was a good one and that you enjoyed worshiping with God's people yesterday and gained something from God's Word as you heard it preached and read yesterday.
00:35
Today, in our Bible reading, we're in the book of Acts and reading chapters 20 through 23.
00:41
I want to focus in on chapter 23 because it's not a climax of a situation, but it kind of is as well.
00:51
Paul has come to Jerusalem and there are those who oppose Paul and his ministry.
00:57
They find him in the temple and there is this great uproar, the result of which is that Paul is taken into custody because the authorities see that he'd be torn to pieces if they didn't intervene in that situation.
01:14
So they intervene and Paul has the opportunity of speaking to the crowd and as he does so, he explains who he is, his background, why he's doing what he's doing, and everything's fine until he says that God has sent him to the
01:30
Gentiles and then all mayhem breaks out again. So Paul is then again whisked into the stronghold where he is basically imprisoned.
01:45
As I thought about that, I thought about what Paul went through in all of this and what's yet to come, because there's more to come.
01:57
Paul is stuck in these barracks and he's basically shackled, he can't leave.
02:07
This had to be very frustrating, and he's going to remain there until he has a trial of some kind, and then they're going to determine what to do with him.
02:18
While he's there in that prison situation, there's this plot that is hatched to ambush
02:29
Paul when he's being taken to the court and have him killed. These would -be assassins, they'd made a pact, we're going to kill him.
02:39
Paul is warned of that and he's able to deal with it.
02:46
But here's the thing that struck me. Here's the Apostle Paul, in all of his ministry, his preaching of the
02:54
Word, his very effective ministry, and yet he is enduring these kinds of really negative and miserable circumstances.
03:08
It struck me how God, in his sovereign purposes and in his providence, will ordain circumstances, not just tolerate, put up with, as if he can't do anything about them, no.
03:23
He will actually ordain circumstances that will be, for me, a great personal trial, as they were for the
03:31
Apostle Paul. But one thing that should be encouraging to us here is that God had placed someone at just the right place at just the right time.
03:42
We read of him in Acts 23, verse 16, it's Paul's nephew. We read that Paul's sister's son heard of their ambush and went and entered the barracks and told
03:54
Paul. Now, how is it that he came to hear about this ambush?
04:01
Well, because the same God that in his providence ordains that we go through and endure certain unpleasant circumstances, this same
04:10
God in his providence will place people at just the right place, just the right time, to come to our aid in those circumstances.
04:23
This young man was able to tell Paul about it, and then Paul told him, well, go tell the commander.
04:29
He goes and tells the commander, and then that resulted in Paul being delivered from the ambush. Now, the interesting thing is that he's moved from Jerusalem up to Caesarea, put into protective custody up there until the trial can be moved up there.
04:48
Again, we often will scratch our heads at the unfolding of these providential circumstances, and we wonder, why?
05:00
Why is God not doing something about this? We fail to have eyes to see that God is doing something about this.
05:10
One thing that God promised to Paul just after this arrest took place, we read of in chapter 23, verse 11, where in the nighttime the
05:22
Lord came to Paul and said, be of good cheer, Paul, for as you have testified for me in Jerusalem, so you must also bear witness at Rome.
05:34
So how is Paul going to get from Jerusalem to Rome? Well, in the normal circumstances, you'd think he'd go get on a boat and pay the passage fee, and he'd sail away to Rome, but that's not the way
05:47
God wanted to get him to Rome. He has other plans in mind, and God, in his purposes, brings
05:55
Paul through all of these ordeals to get him to Rome, but also to accomplish certain things along the path that these difficult circumstances of Paul's will indeed accomplish.
06:12
We'll read more of that tomorrow as we get to chapters 24 through 27, but for today, let's find comfort and encouragement in the fact that our gracious and sovereign
06:25
God will, in our times of difficult circumstances, arrange things for his purposes and ultimately for our good, even though there can be quite a delay before we see how all that plays out.
06:44
Let's trust him in those times. So our Father and our God, we do thank you that we can trust you in times of difficulty, knowing that in your providence, you're working your purposes to accomplish your ultimate end.
06:59
We thank you in Jesus' name, amen. All right, have a good Monday. Hope your week gets off to a great start.
