Welcome to No Compromise Radio, a ministry coming to you from Bethlehem Bible Church in West Boylston.
00:08
No Compromise Radio is a program dedicated to the ongoing proclamation of Jesus Christ. Based on the theme in Galatians 2, verse 5, where the
00:16
Apostle Paul said, But we did not yield in subjection to them for even an hour , so that the truth of the gospel would remain with you.
00:24
In short, if you like smooth, watered -down words to make you simply feel good, this show isnt for you.
00:30
By purpose, we are first biblical, but we can also be controversial. Stay tuned for the next 25 minutes as were called by the
00:37
Divine Trumpet to summon the troops for the honor and glory of her King. Heres our host, Pastor Mike Ebendroth.
00:44
This morning we come to a very interesting psalm in the
00:50
Old Testament that is Psalm 117, as youve heard already. Its a psalm that has really become central in my thinking and in my life over this last year for various reasons and primarily for the great truths about God that it presents.
01:08
As you turn there, I would invite you to turn there to Psalm 117. Just a few things about this psalm that are interesting and providential.
01:16
This psalm falls in the mathematical center of the Bible. In case some of you are math nerds, theres 594 chapters right before the psalm and 594 chapters after it.
01:30
Its right there, smack bang in the middle. But I think even more than all of that, its providential that God placed it in the middle because it really, even though its the shortest psalm in the
01:42
Bible, the shortest chapter in the Bible, its also one of the most central in terms of its truth and its meaning and it capsulates much of what the whole gospel and the whole scripture say about God and Jesus Christ.
01:57
Martin Luther, therefore, he loved a lot of the psalms and in many ways he discovered the gospel in Romans, but he was led to that through the psalms and he loved this psalm particularly.
02:08
He said theres so much gospel truth in it, so much so that he decided to write a whole separate 36 -page commentary on just these two verses.
02:17
So thats about 18 pages per verse. So if we dont get done until, you know, about midnight tonight,
02:25
Im still going short compared to Luther. But this psalm was part of the
02:30
Hillel psalms and this particular set here, the Hillel were songs of praise that they would sing as they went to the temple, but this 113 -118 where Psalm 117 is found is part of a special Hillel.
02:48
It was called even the Egyptian Hillel, six psalms sung particularly celebrating the
02:55
Exodus. But if you remember Redemption history, that takes us all the way to then what
03:01
Jesus did on the cross and they sang these six psalms including 117 every time they celebrated the
03:09
Passover. Now catch the significance of this even before we get into the psalm. Matthew 26 verse 30 tells us that Jesus as he celebrated the
03:18
Passover, he sang a song and this would be the traditional psalms that he would sing with his disciples.
03:25
So just in case you didnt know this, Jesus sang and he sang scripture and he even sang this psalm as he was going to the cross.
03:35
And were going to talk about that even as we go through this psalm, but I think one of the reasons why is as Jesus was going to that cross that he was going to offer his life for you and me, he was even centralized on glory and on the glory of God that was going to be promoted through his sacrifice that he was going to give for his people.
03:56
And thats because this psalm is saturated with praise to Yahweh. It starts off with Hallelu when we know that word from the
04:06
Hebrew Yahweh and then it ends with Hallelu -Yah. And even the tense of these verbs that introduce, we havent even read the psalm yet,
04:16
Im just sort of introducing it, theres so much here, is a sense of commanding
04:21
Gods people as they think about Gods work in their lives and Gods work in the world to be filled with praise from beginning to end.
04:31
It starts with praise and it ends with praise, isnt that what our life is supposed to be? Isnt that what were saved for ultimately?
04:39
Not for ourselves, not for our own merit, not for our own work, not for our own glory, not for our own ministry, but that we would fade away even.
04:49
That we would die and that our life would just be in a little bit of what we did even this morning, right?
04:55
As we sang together, this is what we get to look forward to in heaven forever and ever would be just ceaseless
05:00
Hallelu -Yah. And so, intentionally the psalm brackets us with that idea of worship from beginning to end to teach us that the driving force of the
05:12
Christian life is not our activities, its not our work, its not church programs, but its worship which is a hidden work that only
05:23
God can see. Christianity is not some kind of an act that we play before one another, but its the grand call of Christ even, isnt it, in Luke 9 verse 24 that whoever wishes to save his life must lose it for my sake.
05:40
And so the psalm is calling us to reflect upon this truth that I have no value.
05:48
Wouldnt you say that thats the beginning point of being saved in the gospel? Im a wretch, Im a sinner,
05:53
I have nothing to offer God except for one thing, my sin. I have no value.
05:59
But I am captivated in salvation by the grandeur of the value of who
06:05
God is, of who God is even in Jesus Christ. And life is about me losing myself in the grandeur of God.
06:12
Thats the adventure of Christianity, isnt it? And this is really what makes life sweet, even as you go through trials to recognize that they will all lead you toward the grandeur of worship.
06:25
So lets read Psalm 117 and follow along with me as we read this shortest chapter and yet this most solid and saturated and theological chapter in the
06:37
Bible. Psalm 117, starting with verse 1, it says this, Praise
06:42
Yahweh, all nations, laud Himthats an interesting word, well talk about it, laud
06:49
Him, all peoples, for His loving kindness is great toward us, and the truth of Yahweh is everlasting.
07:02
Praise Yahweh. Even as we read these verses, you can see the divine logic, its very clear, the scripture is doxological and so it leads us to worship but its also logical.
07:15
It makes you think as you worship and the first part of this Psalm, verse 1, is the command or the what of worship.
07:23
We need to think about the content of what we worship God in and for. And then verse 2, and you can see the clause changing there, for giving us a cause or a why of worship and a sense of even being motivated if youre asking, How can
07:41
I be worshiping ceaselessly ? and youre saying, Life doesnt seem like that to me all the time. And He gives you some fuel, some gasoline, so that worship can go on in a ceaseless way based on who
07:52
God is. And so this Psalm is really like a life lesson, a life journey on how to make worship the driving force of all that we would be.
08:04
Everything that we do in ministry and in life is all encapsulated in worship.
08:10
Paul said that, right? Philippians 1 .21, For me to live is Christ and dying is more Christ. And so this is really what were going to learn even as we look at this
08:19
Psalm, and I want to split it up in this way for us as we meditate on this Psalm. This Psalm gives us basically two exhortations to make your life
08:29
Christian. If you are a Christian this morning, to make your life, two exhortations to make your life resonate with worship.
08:37
We dont want to have worship start from our own imagination. We dont want to have worship start from our own creativity, but we want to have worship start from Gods revelation of Himself, and we want to resonate with that.
08:50
So theres two exhortations to make your life resonate with worship. And so were just going to be looking at the first one in verse 1, and the second one in verse 2.
08:59
Look again at verse 1 as it says, Praise Yahweh, all nations, and laud
09:05
Him all peoples. What a grand call that is. And its a call that takes us, you know, sometimes we can become so small minded, we can just think about our lives, we can think about our trials, and He wants to lift you up to think about who you are as part of the kingdom of God.
09:22
Youre part of something that is bigger than the universe. And this is the God that you know.
09:27
This is the God that you serve in Christ. Hes over all the nations, and Hes over all the peoples.
09:34
And so the first exhortation is just simply this, its this idea if you have too small a view of God, and thats why your worship is too small.
09:43
And so start, brothers and sisters, with a corrective, saturate your mind with Gods greatness.
09:50
Isnt that the battle of life? We begin to think that God is small and life is big.
09:57
And Hes saying no, no, no, no, no, no, start your day, start today even with thinking about how great
10:03
God is so that the things of this world maybe that youre even struggling with this morning, and I know you will have struggles if youre a
10:09
Christian, will become small. Saturate your mind with just how
10:14
God, with how great God is. Every single nation, every single people is under Him.
10:22
We get intimidated sometimes by the nations and the people, right? Ive had a lot of episodes even this last year where Ive had to be with authorities and police and ministers, and its scary sometimes because, you know,
10:36
Im just a small insignificant man, but we need to recognize like Isaiah that God is always on His throne and no matter whos coming and going that there is only one consistent reality that the
10:48
Christian lives in and that is that God is in charge, Hes sovereign, Hes ruling and nothing can change that.
10:56
And so the psalmist commands our hearts and he says dont be led by your emotions, dont be led by what you saw in the news last night, dont be led by just the things that you see even, but through faith be led by the doctrine of the greatness of God, and then the feelings will come, and then youll be led to worship.
11:18
Now he starts by saying, Praise Yahweh or we know this as Hallelujah,
11:24
I get so fed up sometimes when I hear people using it almost as a Christian greeting, right? Hallelujah,
11:30
Hallelujah, were just throwing it around and the thing that bothers me even in all of that is we dont even hardly know what were saying, its just something that Christians say like Hello, and as I was studying this
11:44
I was just, my mind was boggled with some of the richness of what this word even means, its not just a
11:51
Christian phrase, but its something richer, as the psalmist says Hallel hes using an idea that we may not think of often, but was very convicting almost to a
12:05
Hebrew mindset and to somebody that knew this language. Look for instance in one place at a verse that you might know well, but you may not have known that this word was used there,
12:16
Jeremiah chapter 9 verses 23 and 24, Jeremiah chapter 9, maybe some of you have this verse on your walls, maybe some of you have cross -stitched this verse, but Jeremiah chapter 9 verses 23 and 24, so were going to be doing a little bit of moving around in the
12:31
Old Testament, and it says this, familiar words to you, Let not the wise man what?
12:38
Boast in his wisdom, Let not the mighty man boast in his might, Let not the rich man boast in his riches, you know all that muck that we tend to have our life saturated and in this world, but Let him, and we love the resolution, Let him who boasts, there is a kind of boasting that is sinful, but there is a boasting that we are exhorted to have, Let him who boasts, boasts in what?
13:04
That he knows and understands me, we love to brag about stupid things the psalmist,
13:13
Jeremiah is saying, the castles on this earth, our accomplishments, our education, our, you know, our brilliance, and he says, all of that stuff is done, and the only thing that we should brag in and we should boast in is what?
13:29
The fact that you are known by God, the fact that Christ has made you an enemy of God, his friend, right?
13:36
Now catch this, the word boast, every time its used in Jeremiah 9, 22 and 23 is the word Hallel, right?
13:44
And so, when you turn back to Psalm 117, turn back there, this is what the psalmist is telling us, he is saying that there is a sense in which your mind needs to be saturated with Gods greatness and is that you need to use that sinful tendency that you have to brag about dumb things that you do and that you have in your life, your money and your achievements and maybe the fact that you have six kids or whatever, and that you think you have made it in life, and he says you need to silence your mouth and you need to be using your mouth and your heart more to brag in Christ and in God and who he is.
14:26
You see how this word that we normally use, hallelujah, is actually a word of conviction, its a word of repentance, its a word of abandoning our sinful bent to be self -arrogant and to say that we would like,
14:42
Paul says, I will boast in Christ alone, I will boast in God alone. The only substance that we have that is worthy of boasting is
14:53
God and so he goes on to help us, he says in verse 1, if you look at Psalm 117 verse 1 again, he says Brag in Yahweh, why?
15:02
First of all, because He is over all the nations. So, how do we saturate our minds with Gods greatness?
15:11
I think the Psalmist is giving us sort of a two -step way to saturate our minds, to marinate our minds, to just soak our minds so much with who
15:18
God is that there is nothing else left there. He says, first of all, boast in His rule,
15:24
He is King of Kings and think about His rule. This is the theme of all of Scripture, isnt it?
15:33
In fact, it is promised to Christ in Psalm 2 that the God who is the
15:39
Creator, the God who is the ruler of all the nations, who made them anyway, why wouldnt they be under Him?
15:45
He promises to put all those nations under Christ and you remember the first words of Jesus when
15:51
He was raised from the dead to His disciples, He said, All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me, go therefore.
16:00
You know, I hate it when people start with go, you got to start with all authority and thats why we have a mission, thats why we have a
16:09
Christian ministry, thats why we have a Christian life even. And so the
16:15
Psalmist reminds us of just this grandeur of who God is. You know,
16:21
I get to travel around a lot and I love the opportunity that I have sometimes to go into some big cities, you know,
16:29
Boston, Los Angeles and for me, Im a small guy and as Im looking at some of these buildings and theyre hundreds of stories high and theyre just huge and massive edifices that represent the greatness of man in a certain sense, you feel a little small and then you get in a plane, right?
16:49
And you take off and you get to 30 ,000 feet and youre looking at some of those buildings that were scaring you and they look like small little
16:56
Lego blocks. Thats just a little bit of Gods perspective all the time. Hes never looking at what we do here on this earth and seeing what we do here on this earth and seeing that as significant because Hes the
17:10
Lord over all the nations, not just one nation. And thats what
17:15
He seeks to do even in the missionary endeavor that we have in Christ, isnt it? To just claim that authority thats already
17:23
His. Isaiah chapter 40 and verse 15, it says this.
17:29
This is Gods perspective all the time and we need to remember this. Behold the nations are like a drop from a bucket and are regarded as a speck of dust on the scales.
17:43
That lint maybe that you cleared off your jacket this morning, thats how the nations look to Christ and to our
17:49
God. Thats who He is. Behold He lifts up the islands like fine dust, right?
17:58
And in this day and age where our anxiety lies in governments and them coming and going and politics and the things of this world, we just need to remember who the
18:09
God is that we serve day by day. Hes the God who owns all the nations. Why do you fret?
18:15
Why do you worry? Why do you allow your mind to be filled with a sense of bragging in the things that dont matter, right?
18:22
Even some of us, maybe we have this addiction probably, man, just looking at politics on the news and I know its interesting and its getting kind of strange nowadays but do we have so many conversations just talking about that in our homes that our kids are even getting anxious and scared because they think that thats the only thing that matters and they forget that God is on His throne?
18:44
You got to be careful even how you talk about politics today. Dont brag in the things that are happening on this earth.
18:51
Brag in the things that are happening in heaven. Boast in God.
18:57
Boast in Christ. Because one day this is the reality and this is what we get to long for even as we sit here in church is that one day
19:07
Hes going to gather us, Revelation 19 verse 6, and what kind of gathering is it going to be? I cant wait for that day.
19:14
A multitude of heaven from every tribe and every tongue and every nation,
19:19
Revelation 19 verse 6 saying, Hallelujah for the Lord our God the
19:25
Almighty reigns. Every nation that thought they were great has fallen.
19:32
Egypt, Rome, whatever nation you look at today,
19:37
America, India, China, were not going to stand. But the only kingdom that will stand forever and ever is the kingdom of Christ.
19:45
Why? Because He is the God of the nations. And so the psalmist first draws our attention to this idea.
19:54
If youre beginning to be small minded, he says, Satuate your mind with the greatness of God first of all as the ruler, the king of kings who no one can thwart, who no one can challenge.
20:05
And he demonstrated that preeminently in the cross, didnt he? As the nations raged against Him, who triumphed?
20:14
The Lord Jesus. And thats why were here today. No one can thwart the kingdom of Christ. Amen? And now the psalmist moves as hes still trying to just blow our minds, to make our minds recognize that we cant contain worship in our minds.
20:30
Thats the adventure, isnt it? Thats why heaven isnt boring. If you ever thought about it, were going to be there for millennia and millennia.
20:37
What are we going to do after day 2000? Were going to learn new things about the greatness of God.
20:43
And so he goes on to show us how we can continue to be saturated by saying, not just boast in His rule, but he says celebrate
20:51
His redemption. Thats the second way in which we can be saturated with His greatness, celebrate
20:56
His redemption. Look at verse 1 again. He says, Lord Him , the second part of verse 1, Lord
21:02
Him, all peoples. Now hes moving from the great, the nations, to the minutia.
21:09
This word for peoples is talking about the small tribes or the small families of the earth.
21:16
And its showing us even the missionary heart of God, where Hes going to gather together from all the nations.
21:22
Hes going to gather together a people from every family of this earth to sing
21:27
His praises. And even as I look around this room, isnt that true even in this church in some way?
21:33
I mean, as you think about it, theres all kinds of divisiveness out there in the world, but it doesnt happen here.
21:38
Why? We shouldnt actually be sitting next to each other in this room, but were only sitting here because of Christs redemptive power.
21:48
And so he says thats a cause for celebration. This word for Lord, you know, its an old English word.
21:53
I dont know if some of your Bible translations say celebrate. Thats a better rendering of it really that we can understand.
21:59
Psalm 63 verse 3 says this, Because your loving kindness is better than life, my lips will laud you, or my lips will sing praises to you.
22:10
Isnt that true that really all the songs that we sing, and if we sing songs about ourselves, theyre dumb songs, but all the songs that we sing really enthrall our hearts when theyre songs about Christ and His redemptive power, right?
22:26
Those are the songs that really fill your heart with joy, dont they? And so he says this is something to celebrate over and over again, the power of Jesus Christ like Colossians 3, 11 talks about a renewal in which there is no
22:42
Greek or no Jew, no circumcised, no uncircumcised, no barbarian, no Scythian, no slave or free man, but Christ is all and is in all and He creates one family.
22:52
You know, I dont want to get into trouble here today, but theres all this talk about race and racism, and I just got to tell you that the
22:58
Bible doesnt believe in races. I know Im a different color of skin from maybe some of you, but were all part of the same family.
23:06
You know, we believe in that, right, theologically? And so we got to look beyond some of these conversations that are going on today that dont recognize that we came from Gods creative hand and He made us one family and in redemption thats what happens again.
23:23
And you dont need to go to a political rally to have that happen. You need to submit to the Gospel to have that happen.
23:30
And so He says lets celebrate this fact and passionately pursue this fact in worship that as we worship, one of the themes of worship is
23:40
Gods great unifying power in the Gospel. You know, as of today, theres 7 ,040 unreached peoples in the world.
23:51
41 .5 % of the world today hasnt even heard the Gospel. Theres about 1 ,600 languages or 114 million people without a
24:02
Bible in their hands. And thats, you know, whether you want to get involved in that or not, thats how much worship
24:09
I guarantee you because of what God says is going to be brought to Christ. And He will do it, whether He does it through you or whether He does it through somebody else.
24:21
Christ is doing this in the world right now. I have a friend who studied at our
24:27
Bible college and hes just such an example to me. And hes been working for the last five years in a tribal region in the
24:35
Himalayas, in a tribe thats called the Brokpa tribe and they dont even have a written script.
24:42
And he went there at first and he said, Pray for me because Im going to be snowed in for six months out of the year.
24:47
And I said, Whats wrong with you, man? Why dont you find a decent place to go and do church work ?
24:53
And he says, No, Im burdened for this. I got to do this. By Gods grace, God gave him a wife whos a nurse that can take care of him while hes there in this
25:00
God -forsaken country. But he told me, I can think of doing nothing better with my life.
25:08
And I said, Tell me why that is. And he said, Its because I know, I know based on Revelation 5, 9 that theres going to be a people from every tribe and tongue and nation singing
25:19
Christ praises that He has some people in this tribe that will belong to Him.
25:25
Im going to be here and Im going to be translating the Bible into this peoples language until His family hears
25:31
His voice. And thats worship, isnt it? Thats the enthusiasm that we can have that goes beyond just our mundane careers of just trying to buy homes and having jobs and things like that.
25:45
Those things dont matter ultimately. Theyre just a means to Christ and ultimately of what human history is moving towards.
25:53
And that is that He will cause a song to be sung to Him from all the families of the earth. Amen? I hope thats encouraging to your heart this morning.
26:03
Maybe after seeing whats happening in your own life and in your own trials, maybe just watching the news, your heart has stopped boasting in God.
26:11
And the Lord is reminding you today to live by faith and not by sight because what you see by faith is more real.
26:21
Are you consumed this year by your own agenda or by the glory and majesty of Christ over mens souls?
26:29
What do you celebrate? The latest iPhone, you know, when it comes out. I dont know if its coming out in a few months and everybodys going crazy and staying out and waiting in line for a night maybe just to see a stupid piece of metal and technology.
26:43
Do you celebrate the things that really matter? Amen? The kingdom of Christ.
26:50
You see when our hearts are filled with mud and trifles, worship isnt going to flow out of it.
26:57
But when our heart is filled with Christ, we wont have time for all that junk. And God will do his work in maturing us with ceaseless worship that never ends.
27:12
Well, praise God that the psalmist doesnt end there because its great to think about the greatness of God.
27:18
But he continues to then even give us some motivations. And he says, as he turns into verse 2, he says, For his loving kindness is great towards us and the truth of the
27:32
Lord is everlasting. Heres a question for you to think about even as we think about worship.
27:38
Why do we worship? Why do you worship? And the wrong answer is because God needs me.
27:47
You know, if I wasnt there on Sunday, Ive got this great tenor and it just wouldnt sound that good in church.
27:54
And sometimes we think that, dont we? That somehow I contribute something to God in worship and hes blessed by me.
28:04
Acts 17 verses 24 and 25 need to be emblazoned in our hearts that the
28:10
God who made this world and all things in it, since he is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands, nor does he get service from human hands as though he needed anything.
28:23
And why is that true? Because he gives to all men life and breath and all things.
28:31
And so what the psalmist is telling us even as we go into verse 2 is, you know, heres the great mystery and encouragement of Christian worship is that, number one,
28:41
God doesnt need our worship, but we need worship. It strengthens us. It renews us.
28:49
It makes us stronger in our life before God as we spend time in his presence.
28:55
And he loves to give us that blessing. You know, its a blessing to even be in Gods presence.
29:02
Its only possible because of what Jesus has done that we can be in Gods presence. And as we worship him, he changes us.
29:11
And so, thats kind of the idea that we find in verse 2. He says, For his loving kindness is what?
29:17
great towards us, and the truth of the Lord is everlasting. The idea that it sustains you forever.
29:24
And so the second exhortation is this. Its actually an encouragement. First, that we would saturate our minds with Gods greatness, but secondly, worship is this.
29:34
He says, Strengthen your heart. Strengthen your heart day by day with Gods goodness.
29:41
This is the portion of the Christian that you should long for worship because you should say, Without worship,
29:47
I cant live. I cant have faith. And that worship would even be that place of encouragement and strength for you.
29:55
Now, how does he teach us to strengthen our hearts? He uses these two attributes. He says, For his loving kindness is great, and the truth of the
30:05
Lord is everlasting. And if youre a Christian that has read scripture for a while, you should say these two attributes.
30:12
Theyre the song of the whole Bible. Theyre the song of the attributes of who
30:18
God is to sinners throughout the Old Testament and the New Testament. Just to give you a brief overview, you remember when
30:26
Moses, he was weak, and he was struggling with just ministry, right?
30:32
Ministry can do that to you sometimes. And he said, Lord, show me your glory. You remember what the
30:37
Lord did? Exodus 34, he said, Well, you cant see my full glory and live, but Ill show you the back parts of my glory.
30:44
Exodus 34 verse 6, Yahweh passed before him and proclaimed, Yahweh,
30:50
Yahweh Elohim, compassion and gracious, slow to anger and catch this, full of loving kindness and truth.
31:00
The same two attributes that the psalmist used in Psalm 117 verse 2. Think about Jesus Christ in John chapter 1 verse 14, and this is really key.
31:11
As he comes to us as sinners, how does he reveal himself to us? And if you will, he could have revealed himself to us as judge and rightly so, and crushed us for our sinfulness.
31:23
He could have revealed himself to us as king and just sort of made us cower before him, but he doesnt do those things because he comes to us,
31:31
John chapter 1 verse 14, he comes to save, The Word became flesh , John chapter 1 verse 14, and dwelt among us, and we beheld his glory.
31:41
Which is what? Strengthening to us. Why? Because its full of grace, or you can even say loving kindness and truth.
31:51
And so, this is the drumbeat of Christ, if you will, as he comes to sinners. He doesnt come to crush us, but he comes to lift us up from the ash heap and say, I want to make you live, and I will make you live through what?
32:03
Through loving kindness and truth. If you look back at Psalm 117 verse 2, did you think that we could get so much from these two verses?
32:14
Its not because Im smart, its because this is scripture, okay? And its inspired by God, and it is just rich, and this morning is going to be enough for us to just grasp even everything thats in here.
32:27
But just a little bit of what hes saying as he says, Strengthen your heart with these two attributes. He says, first of all, strengthen your heart with this first attribute, his love, his loving kindness or his love.
32:38
He says, It conquers us. Now, what does that mean? When he says his loving kindness is great, literally the
32:46
Hebrew uses a word thats a military term. If you look at Exodus 17 verse 11, it says this.
32:55
You remember this story? Its a great story. When Moses was praying and the Israelites were fighting against the
33:01
Amalekites, and God was showing them where their strength came from, and whenever Moses raised his hands and prayed, the
33:09
Israelites, it said, conquered the Amalekites. But whenever his hands came down, and so he had to have two helpers because he couldnt do that.
33:18
His hands came down, Aaron and Hur came around him and held his arms up, but when his hands came down, the
33:23
Amalekites conquered the Israelites. That same word for an army conquering another army is used in Psalm 117 when it says, His love conquers us.
33:36
It prevails over us. At first, Im going and youre probably thinking the same thing. You dont normally speak about love in that way, do you?
33:45
Thats because we often have made love into this romantic, sappy,
33:52
Hollywood kind of passive thing, but the Bible doesnt present the love of Christ in that way at all.
33:58
It talks about a love that is irresistible. It talks about a love that sinners cannot prevail against.
34:06
And so, what kind of love is this? Well, this word loving kindness is kesed in Hebrew.
34:14
I love that word because it helps you to really get those throat juices out. But kesed is the idea of Gods attribute of doing good even to those who are
34:24
His enemies. Dont we have that in Romans chapter 5 verse 8? Its not the kind of love that is kind of playing tangle with somebody, but its the kind of love that is even winning over somebody thats fighting against Him, thats even rebelling against Him.
34:42
And so, God takes people that are spiteful, that hate Him, that have no regard for Him, like me, like you.
34:50
Wouldnt you all say, if you think about your testimony, that it was the love of Christ that conquered me? Thats why
34:55
Im here today. Psalm 103 verses 8 and 9. The Lord is merciful and gracious.
35:02
Praise God that Hes slow to anger because I deserve His anger. And abounding in mercy, He will not always strive with us and keep
35:10
His anger forever. He has not dealt with us according to our sins nor punished us according to our iniquities.
35:18
And this is the love of God that causes every sinner to get saved.
35:23
I know faith comes by hearing, and hearing the Word of God, but I would say, even more specifically, hearing the
35:29
Word of God that shows us the love of Christ towards our wretchedness. Thats what conquers each sinner, one sinner at a time.
35:38
I know I was conquered by Romans 6. I dont know what you were conquered by. And this is the love of Christ that He shows towards sinners that is revealed throughout the
35:50
Gospels, isnt it? I love thinking about Christs love for us. Its so limited to think about Christs love as just six stars on the cross, even though that is tremendous.
36:00
But He loved us from eternity past. He loved us in the virgin birth. Isnt that amazing? That He would identify with all our weaknesses so that there is no weakness that you can say that He doesnt know.
36:12
He even became a helpless baby. He loved us for 33 and a half years. He didnt just come in a space capsule to Calvary and say, Here
36:20
I am. But He lived a whole life for you and me. And the Gospel of John even tells us that thats our righteousness, isnt it?
36:27
Thats the love of Christ for sinners. Its the love of resurrection.
36:34
Not only did He suffer and die, but He also was raised from the dead for you and me.
36:41
Does He stop loving? Its the love of intercession. Right now, Hebrews 7 .25.
36:47
You know, you may be struggling here this morning, but your faith will not fail because you have a Savior whos praying for you, just like He prayed for Peter.
36:55
Hes praying for you. Has anyone loved you like Christ? The answer is no.
37:00
I praise God for my wife. I praise God for the love that I cantbut nobody has loved me like Jesus Christ.
37:06
And this has to become the strengthening fountain of worship for you as a
37:11
Christian. That is why Paul prays before he can even give a single exhortation to the church.
37:17
He says, I got to pray this prayer that you would knowwhat? the love of Christ, which surpasses knowledge, that you may then be able to be filled up with all the fullness of God.
37:27
Are you trying to run with your own love, with your own energy? The psalmist is reminding us.
37:32
Hes saying, Be filled with the love of Christ. This is not romantic love.
37:38
This is conquering love. And isnt this the kind of love then that even enables us in our own marriages as we stop becoming beggars and go to your husband or your wife and say, Im not going to love you because of the nasty thing you said to me this morningor whatever and you say, Im going to love you anyway, you know why?
37:55
Because Ive been conquered by Christs love and Ive got a greater source of worship than you.
38:02
Its Jesus that causes me to worship even in my marriage. Isnt it liberating to live through this kind of worship?
38:11
It gives us a sufficiency that we dont have. Well, not only does His love conquer us, but He goes on to say, And the truth of the
38:20
Lord is everlasting. And I would say, were strengthened not just by His love, but were strengthened also by His promises.
38:28
His promises control us. The truth of the Lord guides you forever and ever.
38:35
Isnt that the battle that we face all the time of fighting lies, right? That this world throws our way about who we are and what we are.
38:45
I was even talking to a dear Christian brother a few days ago thats struggling with alcoholism and he said, just long story short, that it was because as he evaluated his life, he was trying to impress people too much and living through that pressure.
39:00
Even as a Christian, he wasnt living in Romans 8. And so he used alcohol as a way to soothe himself and the
39:07
Bible says, Stop doing that. Live not through the lies that this world might throw your way, even what people might say to you, but live through the truth of Christ.
39:18
May that control you forever and ever. Now, why do I say promises? This word for truth in the
39:25
Hebrew is emet. I love that word because its from a root in Hebrew and Im not trying to pretend to be smart.
39:34
Im not even that smart. But its a word that you know, amenu. And amenu is something that we say every time we end in prayer, right?
39:43
And for right reason, the Greek borrows from the Hebrew idea of even, not just truth, but something that is established.
39:52
Something that never changes. You know what youre doing when you say amen at the end of a prayer? Youre not just saying, Well, that was a cute prayer.
39:58
I liked it. You know, good language. No, youre just saying, I agree with the truth that was in that prayer.
40:05
There was scriptural, biblical doctrine in that prayer and therefore I will say amen. Because it stands not on human ideas but it stands on what
40:14
God says. Thats what we should be. You shouldnt be saying amen all the time even. We should be agreeing with who
40:21
God is and what He has said. And so, the idea here is the idea of the fact that all of life is made certain because of the promises that God has revealed to us in Christ.
40:35
2 Corinthians 1 .20, For as many be the promises of God, in Him they are what?
40:42
They are yes. Wherefore also by Him is our amen to the glory of God through us.
40:49
Spurgeon, I think, in his ministry and his life, he even began to gather together, and I dont think it was an exhaustive list of all the promises of God that he could find in the scriptures, you know?
41:00
Because he said, I need to live by that kind of faith. And so he called it the
41:06
Christians checkbook so that we can withdraw in time of need the things that we need to be meditating on and thinking upon.
41:14
Verses like Psalm 37, verse 25, I have been young and now I am old, yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken nor his descendants begging for bread.
41:23
Isnt that true? Because the Lord is faithful. Verses like John 1 .9,
41:29
If we confess our sins, he is what? He is faithful. Not because I am meritorious.
41:35
Even as a Christian, He is faithful. And because of that, I can be stable. Do you feel sometimes like, Oh, the
41:41
Lord cant forgive me for that. That was just over the top. Well, youre right, if it depended on you.
41:48
But it depends on Christ. He is faithful and He will forgive. Amen? And so we live through His faithfulness.
41:58
What a Psalm this is, isnt it? What a weighty ballast for our souls as we walk through life and that we would be rooted not in the things of this world, but we would be rooted in our great
42:10
God. Think about Jesus as He was singing this song with His disciples before He went to the cross.
42:17
Doesnt it make a lot of sense now? I go to the cross because Im worthy of all worship and because all the nations and all the peoples are going to be sitting under my feet.
42:29
Thats what the Father has promised and I will sing this Psalm even over the cross. I go to the cross not because of your love.
42:37
In fact, your love is wavering. But I go to the cross because of my love. I go to the cross not because of your faithfulness.
42:45
Many of you are running away and youre scared and youre afraid because you fear man more than God.
42:52
But I go to the cross because I am faithful, everlastingly faithful. That is the rock that is
43:00
Christ. And this is what the Psalmist is telling us needs to be our rock so that we can start and end with hallelujah.
43:10
Lets pray. Father, we thank you so much for this Psalm and just reminding us in such a succinct but profound way of how we need to live as worshipers.
43:23
Lord, I pray for us as a church that you would help us to just recognize afresh how we tend to wander and bragging about just the things that we have and the things of this world.
43:35
Lord, help us to kill that by bragging only in you and in your kingdom and in your work in our lives.
43:43
we decrease so that Christ may increase. Until he comes again we pray. Amen.
