00:24: Lord your God He is God the faithful God and then when you learn that truth that God is faithful.
00:31: I hope you respond To God in your life with faithfulness It's not just talking about here's the attribute and then it's nice to know but when we learn something about God It should elicit in our hearts a response back to God and we could even be like Sarah who in Hebrews 11
00:49: It says by faith even Sarah herself Received ability to conceive even beyond the proper time of life since she was since she considered him faithful who
01:01: Promised and so that's what I want the congregation to do tonight two purposes really Number one to see
01:07: God as faithful and number two by the Spirit's power to live a faithful life on to God I'll ask you out loud congregation
01:16: I'll ask you out loud, of course because I'm preaching but please respond out loud Tell me some areas in this culture where we see unfaithfulness
01:24: What would be some realms of unfaithfulness that we would notice in the world? Okay, marriage infidelity.
01:30: Yes other areas taxes Yes Worker employee
01:37: I'm trying to get a car out in California in an old car because Kim's grandmother's 94 and she can't drive anymore
01:44: And she has no car and Kim and the kids will be out there for a long time like they are every summer And we can't rent a car every single week

02:37: In the business world a man's word is with exceedingly rare exceptions No longer his bond in the social world
02:45: Merrill at marital infidelity abounds on every hand The sacred bonds of wedlock being broken with as little regard as discarding of an old garment and in the ecclesiastical realm the church realm
02:58: Thousands who have solemnly covenanted to preach the truth make no scruple to attack and deny it
03:06: Where is the faithfulness of people these days? And that's why if you put our unfaithfulness the society's unfaithfulness the world's unfaithfulness
03:15: Against the backdrop of God's faithfulness It just makes his faithfulness shine forth for God is not a man that he should lie
03:22: Neither the son of man that he should what? repent Hath not God said that he shall not do it or has he spoken it and shall not make it good?
03:32: We know the Bible teaches that God is a rock a God of faithfulness and without injustice
03:39: Deuteronomy 32 says I Found some words even that speak of God and his faithfulness
03:45: God is called a fortress Jeremiah 16 he's called a defense psalm 89 and he's called a rock
03:56: Deuteronomy 32 and psalm 19 Fortress defense rock by the way the way
04:01: I remember that is He's the real FDR because I can remember fortress deliver our defense and rock
04:08: Listen to some of these verses, you know them well, so I won't give you Where they come from Faithful is he who calls you and he will also bring it to pass
04:17: The Lord's loving -kindness is indeed never cease for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning great is thy faithfulness of the
04:28: Messiah Righteousness will be belt around his loins and faithfulness is the belt around his waist
04:37: Thy loving -kindness. Oh Lord extends to the heavens thy faithfulness reaches to the skies
04:45: Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering for he who promised is faithful but my all -time favorite passage
04:56: About God's faithfulness and extolling it to Psalm 89. So let's go there Psalm 89
05:02: One of those rich Psalms that I tend to just zoom through because many of the Psalms are short and I can get the point
05:08: But here we have 51 verses and then the close with verse 52 And it's a little more difficult to get our arms around and for those of you that know that I can do a verse a week
05:18: We've got 52 Verses here. I'm not going to look at everything just an overview of this
05:23: Psalm about God's Covenant faithfulness God is faithful now as you're turning there just a couple definitions
05:34: One of the things that we need to think about when it comes to God's Faithfulness is how his faithfulness works with other attributes
05:42: Anybody talked to me just out loud a little bit about how God must be faithful because there are other attributes that would in a sense
05:50: Guarantee his faithfulness Give me some other attributes that would guarantee God's faithfulness
05:56: Holiness, okay good truthfulness
06:02: Love good Justice excellent. There's one that I'm looking for.
06:08: Yes Immutability, he doesn't change. God's going to be faithful because if he wants promises that he always will be faithful A .W.
06:17: Tozer said he cannot act out of character with himself He is at once faithful and immutable.
06:23: So all his words and acts must be and must remain Faithful and then
06:30: Tozer is very insightful men become unfaithful out of desire fear
06:35: Weakness loss of interest are because of some strong influence from without Obviously, none of these forces can affect
06:43: God in any way He is his own reason for all he is and does he cannot be compelled from without But ever speaks and acts from within himself by his own sovereign will as it pleases him
07:00: God never forgets God never fails God is faithful by the way the
07:07: Hebrew word for faithfulness There are several but they all have the idea of that. God is a prop
07:14: God is a stay. God is a support. God is Something that can be leaned upon Leaning on the everlasting arms would give us the idea of God's Faithfulness one of the key words in the
07:28: Hebrew Bible for faithfulness Suggest a conscientious way of acting one commentary said
07:36: Interstability a consistency and the opposite of faithfulness would be what if I had to say here's the word faithfulness the antonym
07:44: Or opposite word of faithfulness you would say Yeah unfaithfulness one man said
07:55: Falsehood our lie God is faithful to his word Contrary Judah and I and Israel who would swear falsely
08:06: The Greek idea has the meaning of he can be relied upon and so here when we come into Psalm 89 it is this
08:15: Megaphone through the the strange psalmist name. Do you see it in your liner notes there?
08:21: Ethan the Ezra height? Proclaiming that God is faithful Now here's what
08:26: I do in my Western mind. Here's a problem that's in life. And now here's the solution
08:31: But this psalm is opposite. The psalm says here's the solution and by the way towards the end is the problem
08:37: It's the exact different way that I would with that I would set something up and that's the key to the interpretation is
08:44: Understanding what's going on at the end look down in verse 38 and we won't read every verse
08:49: But I want you to read some and here's the basic backdrop Knowing what's going on?
08:54: How can God be faithful? Knowing the circumstances in life in this particular case God has promised the
09:00: Davidic Covenant to the sons of David and then ultimately Messiah So why is our world upside down David doesn't seem to be raining
09:08: But for us it could be the same thing God has promised his word to us He's made all kinds of promises, but it doesn't seem like it's working out in life
09:16: That is to say we see the world and we think how can God be in charge? He says he is how could he be?
09:22: And that's what happens here in this psalm Verse 38 you've cast off and rejected you become full of wrath against your anointed
09:30: He's promised the Davidic Covenant through David and now it seems like he's cast him off You've spurned the covenant of your servant.
09:38: It profaned his crown in the dust Broken down all his walls. You have brought his strongholds to ruin.
09:47: I mean the promises of God are being called into Question and they're examining the promises of God based on circumstances
09:57: Verse 42 you have exalted the right hand of his adversaries instead of exalting David to the right hand of God You've exalted the adversaries to that position of authority and honor and we're not rejoicing
10:12: God verse 42 42 B. You have made all his enemies rejoice Also turned back the edge of his sword and have not made him stand in battle
10:23: Made a splendor to cease and cast his throne to the ground. You shortened his days of his youth You've covered him with shame and then verse 46.
10:29: How long O Lord will you hide yourself forever? Will your wrath burn like fire
10:37: And if I had a title this song my own title would be this Having the proper perspective on God's promises when things don't seem like they're going according to plan
10:47: That's a long title, isn't it? Only about a fourth the length of a Puritan title, but still a long title having proper perspective on God's promises
10:59: Parentheses what to do when things don't seem like they're going according to God's plan close parentheses now one of the things you can do when you study a psalm like this is just read it over and over and over and See if you can pick up any words that repeat themselves
11:15: It doesn't always work but often you'll see words that are repeated and you'll begin to see a theme or a flavor or a tenor to the psalm and You'll see several words that happen on a regular basis
11:25: And if you put them together, you've got the psalm. Let me show you these the word forever Eight times it's in this psalm.
11:32: I won't show you all of them verse 1 forever verse 2 forever verse 4 forever verse 28 forever verse verse 29 forever verse 36 forever 37 forever 46 forever a
11:52: Second word is faithfulness Isn't that amazing it occurs seven times and just you can speed read them with me as well faithfulness verse 1 faithfulness verse 2 faithfulness verse 5 faithfulness verse 8 faithfulness verse 14 faithfulness verse 33 faithfulness and verse 49
12:17: Faithfulness, I even see one more in verse 24 as well 7 8 times the word forever and faithfulness, by the way, how long do you think
12:26: God will be faithful? Forever, that's right. There's another word covenant verse 3 covenant verse 28
12:35: Covenant verse 34 covenant. How long will God keep his covenant? How long will he be faithful to his covenant forever?
12:42: And one last word loving kindness our Hesed or if I was more
12:49: Middle Eastern I would say I said but that is very difficult to say when you have conjunctivitis and a cold
12:55: So I won't say that he has read here. His is his Loving kindness versus one loving kindness to loving kindness 14 loving kindness 24 loving kindness 28 loving kindness 33 loving kindness 49 loving kindness
13:14: God's covenant loving kindness love is Forever and it is faithful forever
13:21: By the way, when I take notes when I'm reading my Bible did you know it's not a sin to write in your Bible by the way, and I just take it and I just circle loving kindness with with a little pencil and then
13:32: I make an arrow to the next loving kindness to the next one to the next one and all of a sudden I come to the psalm and By the way, this is about God's faithfulness to his divinity
13:42: Davidic covenant and his faithfulness goes forever Let me give you four charges tonight in Psalm 81
13:50: That will help you praise God, even though everything looks like it's not going to plan number one in spite of your circumstances
14:02: God must be praised for his faithfulness and we see that model in verses 1 2 3 & 4
14:09: Don't forget the end of the psalm things aren't looking good. But what does this psalmist do? Anyway, he's going to forget feelings and he's just going to do the right thing
14:16: Anyway, so much for having our emotions determine what we do. That'll never work verse 1 of Psalm 89
14:23: I will sing of the loving kindness of the Lord forever to all generations
14:28: I will make known your faithfulness with my mouth. I think that's a song by the way, don't you? I will sing.
14:35: Well, I know I won't sing. I have made a covenant verse 3 with my chosen
14:41: I have swarmed to torn to David my servant. I will establish your seed forever and build up your throne to all generations from one generation to another generation with determination with resolve with a
14:54: Fortified soul no matter what happens in my life I will praise God and I could easily jump off into this and start preaching right now.
15:01: You have your life It's upside down. There are things going on. You don't know about the future You're not sure what you're doing even now, but I know you can do one thing when you don't know what to do extol the mercies and faithfulness of God because he is faithful Even though are the the circumstances and events may seem contradictory to those promises of God.
15:23: They are not If you look at verse 2, they just aren't believed they're eternalized and he's saying it he's singing it
15:30: I have said loving kindness will be built up forever One of the things
15:37: I've noticed when I've gone to other countries with with things being built Especially third world countries they begin to build things and then the foundation is completed and then they run out of money and their stands
15:47: The edifice are poor partial edifice of just man's lack of finishing what he starts
15:54: Seen it in Mexico I've seen it in India But here the God of the universe is to be praised because he is going to build up this mercy
16:02: Forever and ever there is stability to God's promises because God is faithful That's the whole key of the psalm and he's just gonna praise
16:11: God. Anyway, look at verse 3. I Have made a covenant.
16:16: I have swore to David verse 4 I will establish your seed forever, even though the world looks upside down Everything is going according to God's plan
16:28: To all generations all the way to the Messiah, by the way I have the advantage of having the
16:33: New Testament this writer didn't listen to Luke 1 He will be great and he will be called the
16:39: Son of the Most High and the Lord God will give him the throne of his Father David and he will reign over the house of Jacob for what?
16:48: Ever and his kingdom will have no end even though back in the time of the writing of this psalm things didn't look so good
16:54: God is faithful and God is worthy to be praised for that I just love the song great as I faithfulness because it helps me be reminded of this
17:03: God who keeps his promises. I Mean Lewis is all man, and I never would think
17:09: Lewis is somehow less than a man But when Lewis gets up comes back from the voice conference,
17:15: I believe Did you go down to Philadelphia Reformed Conference and stands up and just says I heard a message on the faithfulness of God lamentation chapter 3 and The way
17:24: Lewis manifests his rejoicing was through tears of rejoicing. God is faithful and I want to remember that When I lose my health when
17:32: I lose my daughter when I lose my son when I lose my mom when I lose everything I can still lift my eyes up with a tear and say
17:40: God you are faithful And Spurgeon just laid it out the grace of an unfaithful
17:48: God would be a poor subject for music but unchangeable love and immutable promises demand everlasting songs
18:01: In times of trouble it is the divine faithfulness which the soul hangs upon This is the
18:08: Bauer anchor of the soul It's hold fast and it stay because God is and ever will be faithful We have a theme for song which will not be out of date for future generations
18:19: It will never be worn out never be disproved never be unnecessary never be an idle subject
18:27: Valueless to mankind it will always be desirable to make it known for men are too apt to forget it or doubt it when hard times
18:35: Press upon them. No wonder PT Barnum wanted
18:41: Spurgeon to come to America to just go around and preach Even though he didn't believe the message he had a way with words
18:48: Friends if your circumstances are horrible then in spite of your emotions
18:54: Follow the model of this psalm and praise God for his faithfulness number two
18:59: Boy, did could it get any better watch this one in verses 5 and following in spite of your circumstances
19:06: Why don't you join the heavenly chorus that praises God for his faithfulness right now?
19:13: We might not be able to see everything right side up But the angels do and guess what the angels are doing they are swirling around the throne of God praising him for his faithfulness
19:23: Can you imagine look at the psalm in psalm verse 89 verse 5 and following the heavens will praise your wonders
19:31: Oh Lord Yahweh Your faithfulness also in the assembly of the Holy Ones the angels
19:38: Men might not be praising him women might not be praising him But holy angels praise
19:44: God your faithfulness also in the assembly of the Holy Ones for who in the skies is comparable to the
19:50: Lord Who among the sons of the mighty is like the Lord? The angels might look at the other angels and say like John did wow, you're a pretty amazing angel.
20:00: You're an archangel But there's no one like the Lord who's mighty like that I God greatly feared verse 7 in the council of the
20:08: Holy Ones and here's the word we throw around too easily of basketball teams and Taramisu and awesome above all those who are around him.
20:18: Oh Lord God of hosts God of armies God of angels who is like you Oh mighty
20:23: Lord your faithfulness. Look at this language also Surround you The angels are praising
20:31: God with less than amateurish boorish praise
20:36: They are filling their lungs as it were if spirit beings could do so and they're praising
20:42: God Exposers Bible commentary said quote the rule of God is unquestioned by the
20:49: Holy Ones and quote They are in awe they are in fear they are in his presence
20:56: Praising him. Let me give you a little insight into angelic praise and heavenly praise
21:04: Why don't you flip over to Revelation if you would please I? Like to read Revelation 4 and 5 because it helps me be reminded of what praise in heaven will be like What Donna Flanagan is doing right now?
21:24: Revelation chapter 4 After these things I look and behold a door standing open in heaven the first voice
21:31: Which I heard like the sound of a trumpet speaking with me come up here And I will show you what must take place after these things
21:38: Immediately I was in the spirit behold a throne was standing in heaven and one sitting on the throne and he was sitting
21:45: Was like Jasper stone and Sardius in appearance and there was a rainbow around the throne like an emerald in appearance by the way, why is there a
21:55: Rainbow in heaven, what does a rainbow remind you of? God's faithfulness,
22:03: I've made a promise and I'm not going to flood the earth with water again I may flood it with fire but not with water and there's a backdrop of the faithfulness of God with this rainbow and look at verse 9 and when the living creatures gave glory and honor and Thanks to him who sits on the throne to him who lives forever and ever
22:24: The 24 elders will fall down before him who sits on the throne and will worship him who lives forever and ever and they will
22:31: Cast their crowds before the thrones saying Worthy are you
22:36: O Lord our God to receive glory and honor and power For you created all things and because of your will they existed and were created.
22:45: I Can't believe I get to be there one day look at chapter 5 Same thing then
22:51: I looked verse 11 revelation 5 and I heard the voice of many angels around the throne and the living creatures and the elders and the number of them was myriad of myriads and thousands of thousands
23:02: Sane with a soft quiet voice Sane with a loud voice worthy as the
23:10: Lamb that was slain to receive power and riches and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing and Every created thing which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth and on the sea and all things in them
23:23: I heard saying to him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor and glory and Dominion forever ever and the four living creatures kept saying by the way, it's not a amen
23:36: Amen, and the elders fell down and worshipped we see this idea of the the
23:44: Saints and the elders and the Angels in heaven praising God for many things and in Psalm 89, let's go back there
23:51: God is to be praised for his faithfulness. Why don't you join the throng?
23:57: By the way, angels have not even experienced salvation Have they we are one up on the angels because even though the angels know about save salvation
24:06: They have not experienced salvation. And what does first Peter chapter 1 verse 12 say? That they stoop down low to look into this great thing called salvation
24:16: Because they've never seen anything like it angels when they sinned they're out But humans when they sinned if it so pleases
24:24: God he saves them and now He calls them their own Absolutely amazing
24:31: Can you imagine this? We see the world. It doesn't seem to be going the way
24:37: God has planned it But contrary to exactly what we do or don't do the angels are in heaven praising
24:45: God for everything going exactly according to plan because God is faithful and James Montgomery Boyce said
24:55: Isn't it a rebuke to our weak faith if we thought as the angels we would be praising
25:00: God for his faithfulness Constantly number three in spite of circumstances
25:07: God has the power to remain faithful to his promises Number one, we've got the model for praising
25:13: God for faithfulness number two Why don't we join the heavenly chorus that praises God for his faithfulness and now number three in spite of circumstances?
25:21: God has the power to remain faithful to his promises. I can't go through all these verses Although I'm tempted to look at verse 9 though.
25:28: You rule the swelling of the sea When its waves rise you still them
25:35: I mean when God controls the ocean For the writer of the psalm
25:42: This is like the peak or the pinnacle or the apex of God's power and to him the sea is this evil thing?
25:50: Uncontrollable you're out on the sea one minute. It's calm and the next minute there's some kind of tsunami and all these kind of things and Basically what's happening is the text doesn't say
25:59: God is to be praised for his faithfulness, but here the psalmist is Saying you know,
26:05: I know God's going to remain faithful because he's got power enough to remain faithful So let's pick something that is hard to control and God can control it
26:14: Therefore he's got enough power to keep his faithful promises And so he picks the sea on that day when the evening came he said to them
26:24: Let us go to the other side Leaving the crowd they took him along with them in the boat just as he was and the other boats were with him and there
26:31: Arose a fierce gale of wind and the waves were breaking over the boat so much that the boat was already filling up Jesus himself was in the stern asleep on the cushion and they woke him and said to him a
26:44: Teacher don't you care that we're perishing and being aroused he rebuked the wind and said to the sea
26:53: Hush be still and the wind died down and it became perfectly calm
27:01: And I don't know about you, but when I'm in a deep sleep and I wake up I'm not necessarily having all my faculties together
27:08: Sometime I took a nap. I think it was on Saturday, or I don't know what day it was and I woke up and I thought it was
27:14: I thought it was Sunday morning, and I hadn't didn't have my sermon ready and Jesus just says as the
27:22: God of the universe has power to rule over the ocean the Sea of Galilee as well be
27:28: Silent same word when he said to the demon just be quiet, and then Jesus says be still literally be muzzled
27:35: I mean just take your kids out to Salem and stand at the beach and when the breakers come in just start shouting that over and Over and over and see what happens
27:45: G. Campbell Morgan It was before Lloyd -jones at Westminster in London said like dogs
27:52: Hounds held by the leash the waves cowered back and the sea was calm
27:59: And it's a perfect tense in the Greek Jesus said be muzzled and stay muzzled and the wind died down and became perfectly calm mark forces
28:12: Instantaneous without a word more. It's not gradual One man said you know just think if you turn the wind off you're still gonna get the waves all agitated
28:22: But when Jesus said be still the wind dies down, and then it's just completely still so it's like a double miracle
28:30: The sea and the wind both obeying him and so the psalmist says you know
28:38: God has enough power to keep his promises Nobody's gonna ever make him not keep a promise Number four and finally in spite of circumstances you can expect
28:48: God to keep his word in Spite of circumstances you can expect God to keep his word jump down to verse 24
28:57: Just language now that just bellows out God's faithfulness My faithfulness and my loving -kindness will be with him and my name is horn and in my name is horn will be exalted
29:08: He's talking about David and how he will keep his promise to David. I Shall also set his hand on the sea and his right hand on the rivers
29:18: It's gonna be true. I Will set verse 26 he'll cry to me.
29:23: You're my father my God and the rock of my salvation You can start thinking in advance to Jesus as well
29:31: I also make him my firstborn verse 27 the highest of the kings of the earth my loving -kindness
29:40: I will keep for him forever. I mean the language. It's just a pile on my covenant shall be confirmed to him
29:45: So I will establish his descendants forever and his throne as the days of heaven Same thing down in verse 30 if his sons forsake my law and do not walk in my judgments
29:56: Well, then what will happen? verse 33 says but I will not break off my loving -kindness for him nor deal falsely in my
30:07: Faithfulness my covenant verse 34. I will not violate nor will I alter The utterance of my lips and then getting to the part
30:15: I really wanted to get to verse 35 once I have sworn by my holiness. I Will not lie to David Doesn't have anybody else to swear to he swears by himself as Hebrews would say
30:29: I've sworn by my own holiness I'm putting my holiness on the line. I don't know what kind of language he could use here to say
30:38: I will keep my promises and here's the promise verse 36 his David's Descendant shall endure forever and his throne as the
30:47: Sun before me as long as you see that Sun going up and down You'll know I've kept my promises It will be established forever like the moon and the witness in the sky is
30:56: Faithful and so Psalm 89 talks about the faithfulness of God, but it back ends it
31:03: It basically says at the end How can God in a lamenting fashion be in control when circumstances seem to show that he's not?
31:17: Well in the time we have less I left I want to just go through a few things Practical areas of God's faithfulness.
31:23: Let's go just through a few you want to have some specific areas to praise God for his faithfulness
31:29: Let me give you a few number one praise God for his faithful word
31:35: You could pray these things at home even tonight. God is to be faithfully praised for his faithful word
31:42: Why don't you turn to Psalm 119? We're close there God's Word is faithful It doesn't matter what people say or how they try to attack it
31:49: God's Word is true and since God's Word is true We don't need another church, or we don't need the magisterium
31:55: I was very saddened when I read yesterday that the president of the Evangelical Theological Society Basically the most influential
32:03: Theological Society in the country in the world The president has just said as of yesterday in his blog that I am now a
32:10: Roman Catholic very sad Men change their opinions all the time, but look at God's Word you can trust
32:19: God's Word. It's sure it's faithful Psalm 119 verse 86 All your commandments are faithful They on the other hand have persecuted me with the lie help me
32:31: They almost destroyed me on earth, but as for me. I did not forsake your precepts Verse 89 forever.
32:38: Oh Lord your word is settled in heaven Your faithfulness continues through all generations you establish the earth and it stands
32:51: God is faithful in his word How could we have prophecy if he wasn't faithful to his word we couldn't how can we have guidance?
33:00: Number two you're gonna. Love this one pretty could preach this one by the way God is to be faithfully praised for his forgiveness of sins
33:08: Why don't you turn to first John chapter 1 verse 9 you know the passage? Well, what if God wasn't faithful when it came to forgiving sins and keeping his promises?
33:16: Let's just look at that verse for a minute What if he wasn't faithful? I don't know where we would be if we confess our sin.
33:24: He's what? Faithful and just to forgive us our sin and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness
33:30: If God is not faithful to keep his word to cleanse us Then we don't know if we're forgiven and the only way we'll know is when we get to heaven wonder if we made it
33:40: How can God let's just analyze that verse even for a minute if we confess our sin God I agree that I'm sinful
33:45: I agree that act was sinful. I know that as a Christian. I ought not to do that God. Please forgive me
33:51: What does God do? Well, it says he's faithful and just to forgive us our sins.
