Today’s Scripture reading: Job 38
- 00:16
- Good Saturday morning, people of faith. We are looking at Job chapters 35 through 39 today, and I'm going to zoom in on chapter 38.
- 00:28
- We've been in Job for a little while now, and we know of all that's happened to Job.
- 00:36
- We know of the conversation between the Lord and Satan. We know of Job's friends and the dialogues back and forth with Job's friends.
- 00:47
- In chapter 38, the Lord questions Job. What I'm going to do is
- 00:54
- I'm going to go through those questions, and what I want you to think about as I go through these questions is, how would you answer these questions?
- 01:06
- Starting at the beginning of chapter 38, it says, Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind and said,
- 01:15
- Verse 2, Who is this who darkens counsels by words without knowledge?
- 01:21
- Now prepare yourself like a man, I will question you, and you shall answer me.
- 01:28
- Of all the things that the Lord could say to me, that would be a very troubling thing to think that I would have to answer the
- 01:39
- Lord. Verse 4, Where were you when
- 01:45
- I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell me if you have understanding.
- 01:53
- Verse 5, Who determined its measurements? Surely you know. Again in verse 5,
- 02:01
- Or who stretched the line upon it? Verse 6,
- 02:07
- To what were its foundations fastened? Again in verse 6,
- 02:14
- Or who laid its cornerstone when the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy?
- 02:22
- Verse 8 -11, Or who shut in the sea with doors when it burst forth and issued from the womb?
- 02:32
- When I made the clouds its garment, and thick darkness its swaddling band? When I fixed my limit for it, and set bars and doors when
- 02:42
- I said, This far you may come, but no farther, and here your proud waves must stop.
- 02:52
- Verses 12 -13, Have you commanded the morning since your days began, and caused the dawn to know its place, that it might take hold of the ends of the earth and the wicked be shaken out of it?
- 03:10
- Verse 16, Have you entered the springs of the sea? Again in verse 16,
- 03:18
- Or have you walked in search of the depths? Verse 17,
- 03:25
- Have the gates of death been revealed to you? Again in verse 17,
- 03:31
- Or have you seen the doors of the shadow of death? Verse 18,
- 03:39
- Have you comprehended the breath of the earth? Tell me if you know all of this.
- 03:48
- Verse 19, Where is the way to the dwelling of light?
- 03:53
- And darkness, where is its place? Verse 20,
- 03:59
- That you may take it to its territory, that you may know the paths to its home?
- 04:06
- Verse 21, Do you know it because you were born then, or because the number of your days is great?
- 04:15
- Verse 22, Have you entered the treasury of snow? Or have you seen the treasury of hail, which
- 04:22
- I have reserved for the time of trouble, for the day of battle and war?
- 04:31
- Verse 24, By what way is light diffused?
- 04:37
- Or the east wind scattered over the earth? Verse 25,
- 04:43
- Who has divided a channel for the overflowing water, or a path for the thunderbolt?
- 04:50
- Verse 28, Has the rain a father? Or who has begotten the drops of dew?
- 05:02
- In all of these questions, difficult for us to answer, know this for certain, that the
- 05:09
- Lord knows all of these things. Spoken in poetic language for sure.
- 05:16
- But yet, come away with this, that the Lord is completely other compared to us.
- 05:25
- He is in no way like you or like me. And that is the God whom we worship.
- 05:33
- Let's ponder these things and pray. Heavenly Father, you are the one who has the answers to all these things.
- 05:44
- Thank you that we are able to come to you based on what your Son has done for us. May we walk humbly with you this day.
- 05:55
- It's in your Son's name, Jesus, we pray, amen. Have an excellent day, people of faith.
