for our worship. Grace and peace to you in the name of the
00:43
Lord Jesus Christ. Welcome to the corporate worship of our God.
00:48
Please stand. Praise the
00:54
Lord. Blessed is the man who fears the Lord, who delights greatly in his commandments.
01:02
His descendants will be mighty on earth. The generation of the upright will be blessed.
01:10
Wealth and riches will be in his house, and his righteousness endures forever.
01:16
Unto the upright there arises light in the darkness. He is gracious and full of compassion and righteous.
01:26
A good man deals graciously and lends. He will guide his affairs with discretion.
01:33
Surely he will never be shaken. The righteous will be in everlasting remembrance.
01:38
He will not be afraid of evil tidings. His heart is steadfast, trusting in the
01:45
Lord. His heart is established. He will not be afraid until he sees his desires upon his enemies.
01:53
He has dispersed abroad. He has given to the poor. His righteousness endures forever.
02:00
His horn will be exalted with honor. The wicked will see it and be grieved.
02:06
He will gnash his teeth and melt away. The desire of the wicked shall perish.
02:13
Come now, let us worship the Lord. Please pray with me. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, what a joy, a privilege it is to be called your people, to hear your call, to respond in faith, to come and to worship you.
02:34
We pray that our worship would be pleasing in your sight, that we would be wholeheartedly devoted to you, that we would be zealous for your name, that we'd be eager to walk in your righteousness, that we would be loving and compassionate to those who are weak, that we would take up the cause of the widow and the orphan and all who are suffering.
02:58
Oh Lord, we ask your blessing on this time and we ask in Jesus' name, amen.
03:05
Please kneel as you're able for the corporate confession of sin. Let us now confess together with one voice.
03:20
Most holy and merciful Father, we confess to you and to one another that we have sinned against you by what we have done and by what we have left undone.
03:34
We have not loved you with all our heart, mind and strength. We have not fully loved our neighbor as ourselves.
03:43
We have not always had in us the mind of Christ. By wandering from your ways, forgive us we pray, most merciful
03:58
Father, and free us from our sin. Renew in us the grace and strength of your
04:05
Holy Spirit for the sake of Jesus Christ, your Son, our Savior, amen.
04:11
Please stand. The Lord says, I, even
04:17
I, am he who blots out your transgressions for my sake and I will not remember your sins.
04:27
Oh people of God, isn't it wonderful to know Christ and to have your sins forgiven, amen?
04:34
Please take up the hymnal. We are few in number today, it looks like, and take it and turn to number 53.
04:43
This hymn, as I say often, is bombastic. He is the Lord, he is almighty.
04:49
We need to praise his holy name. Sing from your bowels, praise to the
04:55
Lord, the almighty. Number 53, let us begin. Please take up the insert and find
08:32
Psalm 96. We've just practiced it. It is from the more common, all hail the power of Jesus' name, not the diadem version as DJ has pointed out to us.
08:45
We can sing it confidently from the outset. Let's give it our all. Psalm 96, what a great psalm.
08:51
Let's sing it, let us begin. Please remain standing,
10:55
Genesis 28. Genesis 28.
11:14
Then Isaac called Jacob and blessed him and directed him, you must not take a wife from the
11:19
Canaanite woman. Arise, go to Petanaram, to the house of Bethuel, your mother's father, and take as your wife from there one of the daughters of Laban, your mother's brother.
11:31
God almighty bless you and make you fruitful and multiply you, that you may become a company of peoples.
11:37
May he give the blessing of Abraham to you and to your offspring with you, that you may take possession of the land of your sojournings that God gave to Abraham.
11:47
Thus Isaac sent Jacob away and he went to Petanaram, to Laban, the son of Bethuel, the
11:54
Aramean, the brother of Rebekah, Jacob, and Esau's mother. Now Esau saw that Isaac had blessed
12:01
Jacob and sent him away to Petanaram to take a wife from there and that as he had blessed him, he directed him, you must not take a wife from the
12:10
Canaanite woman and that Jacob had obeyed his father and his mother and gone to Petanaram.
12:16
So when Esau saw that the Canaanite woman did not please Isaac, his father, Esau went to Ishmael and took as his wife, besides the wives he had,
12:26
Mahalath, the daughter of Ishmael, Abraham's son, the sister of Neboah. Jacob left
12:32
Beersheba and went toward Haran and he came to a certain place and stayed there that night because the sun had set.
12:40
Taking one of the stones of the place, he put it under his head and lay down in that place to sleep. And he dreamed and beheld, there was a ladder set up on the earth and the top of it reached to heaven.
12:52
And behold, the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. And behold, the Lord stood above it and said,
12:58
I am the Lord, the God of Abraham, your father, and the God of Isaac. The land on which you lie,
13:04
I will give to you and to your offspring. Your offspring shall be like the dust of the earth and you shall spread abroad to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south.
13:15
And in you and your offspring shall all the families of the earth be blessed. Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go and will bring you back to this land for I will not leave you until I have done what
13:27
I have promised you. Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, surely the Lord is in this place.
13:33
And I did not know it. And he was afraid and said, how awesome is this place? This is none other than the house of God.
13:41
And this is the gate of heaven. So early in the morning, Jacob took the stone that he had put under his head and set it up for a pillar and poured oil on the top of it.
13:50
He called the name of that place Bethel, but the name of the city was Luz at the first. Then Jacob made a vow saying, if God will be with me and will keep me in this way that I go and will give me bread to eat and clothing to wear so that I come again to my father's house in peace, then the
14:06
Lord shall be my God. And this stone, which I have set up for a pillar shall be God's house. And of all that you give me,
14:14
I will give a full 10th to you. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
14:27
Let us now continue our joyful worship with the singing of the
14:33
Apostles' Creed. Let us begin. For I believe in God the
14:40
Father, Jesus Christ, his only begotten
14:52
Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, or crucified into the
15:44
Holy Spirit. I believe the holy
15:49
Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness, correction of the blasphemed.
16:19
Please, and turn to number 305. Arise, my soul, arise.
16:30
305. Take off your guilty feet.
19:31
Please make preparations now for the prayers of the people. And seeing the multitudes,
19:47
Jesus went up on a mountain. And when he was seated, his disciples came to him.
19:53
Then he opened his mouth and taught them, saying, blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
21:11
Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
23:14
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled.
23:19
Make no mistake of idolizing them, idolizing our pursuits and our goals.
23:50
I pray, Lord, that our desires would be aligned, ordered in such a way that would be pleasing to you, that we would be formed by your scripture, led by your
23:58
Holy Spirit. Help us, God, to see this when we ask of Jesus. Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.
24:22
To open our hearts to see how much you've forgiven our sin. And God, help us to see when we've been too quick -tempered with our neighbor, too quick -tempered with our wife or with our children.
24:38
God, I pray that you would have mercy upon us by showing how much mercy you've shown upon us, and that we would extend this mercy to others.
24:47
We ask in Jesus' name, amen. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see
24:54
God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.
26:50
Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
26:57
Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for my sake.
27:07
Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven. For so they have persecuted the prophets who were before you.
27:17
Amen. Please stand and take up the insert. We are singing for the first time the
27:24
Psalm of the month. We've practiced Psalm 78.

I'm gonna ask you to remain standing and take your copy of the Bible and turn to 1
31:17
John in chapter five. 1
31:24
John five. Our time in this epistle is drawing near to an end.
31:34
I'm very sad about that, but looking forward to 2 and 3 John, and maybe even
31:40
Jude, before we leap into something bigger in the future. Let's give attention now to the reading of the word.
31:46
It is God's holy and infallible word to us. 1
31:52
John five. Whoever believes that Jesus is the
31:58
Christ is born of God. And everyone who loves him who begot also loves him who is begotten of him.
32:11
By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love
32:17
God and keep his commandments. For this is the love of God that we keep his commandments and his commandments are not burdensome.
32:27
For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world.
32:36
Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the son of God.
32:45
This is he who came by water and blood, Jesus Christ. Not only by water, but by water and blood.
32:53
And it is the spirit who bears witness because the spirit is truth.
32:59
For there are three that bear witness in heaven, the father, the word and the Holy Spirit.
33:05
And these three are one. There are three that bear witness on earth, the spirit, the water and the blood.
33:14
And these three agree as one. Now the section we'll be considering today.
33:20
If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater.
33:27
For this is the witness of God which he has testified of his son.
33:33
He who believes in the son of God has the witness in himself. He who does not believe
33:41
God has made him a liar because he has not believed the testimony that God has given concerning his son.
33:50
And this is the testimony that God has given us eternal life.
33:58
And this life is in his son. He who has the son has life.
34:05
He who does not have the son of God does not have life. These things
34:11
I have written to you who believe in the name of the son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life and that you may continue to believe in the name of the son of God.
34:29
Please pray with me. Oh Lord, I pray that your people would today again believe on your name.
34:42
I pray that we would believe your testimony concerning your son and that we would enjoy life eternal, the fullness of joy in this life, that we would persevere in faith and that we would continue to continue on with great assurance.
35:06
And we ask this all in Jesus' name, amen. Please be seated.
35:16
One of the things that's happened to me and I don't know that it's something that you experienced in our section,
35:23
I feel that I am speaking on the same topics over and over again in 1
35:30
John. And there is some truth to that. And John is so eager for us to nail down a couple of essentials of eternal life being found exclusively in Jesus Christ, to reject any notion, any false teaching that comes in that denies that he is the son of God who has come in the flesh.
35:55
But we learned today that his aim and purpose is that we would have a good and full assurance of our faith.
36:03
And this would give us great hope. This would enable us to persevere in times of difficulty because we are so anchored and grounded and rooted in the faith that we have in Christ.
36:16
We can withstand all of the storms and all of the hardships that life presents.
36:24
Let's consider our text again, beginning in verse nine. I will give you the brief outline.
36:30
I'm sorry, I forgot to do that. First, the witness of God. It's the first thing we'll be considering.
36:36
Second, eternal life in the son. The witness of God, eternal life in the son.
36:45
And third, assurance and perseverance in Christ.
36:52
Let's take up the idea of the witness of God. If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater.
37:08
Now, the idea of receiving is to actively lay hold of in this politically charged season, we receive the witness of people we agree with.
37:22
We don't really fact check people who agree with us. We listen to all of the experts and we take their opinion at face value and often act upon it.
37:36
We read an article about some issue of health and we say, well, that sounds about right.
37:42
And we immediately implement some new regimen because of some article that we have read.
37:50
We are habitually receiving the witness of men and we never challenged it.
37:58
And yet the witness of God is presented in scripture and we say, did
38:04
God really say? The witness of God clearly articulates the will of God in scripture and we question it.
38:14
Is this something that we can receive? We have to become much more discerning about what we take in and we agree with and what we listen to the experts and the witnesses that we receive.
38:29
And certainly we acknowledge with John that the witness of God is greater, but for some of us,
38:36
TikTok and Instagram, Facebook, are greater witnesses to us or the media or the movies or our friends or our uncle
38:49
Jim or whoever, we take those witnesses. We take them at face value.
38:55
We accept them. We often act upon them. And John says, there's a greater witness, the witness of God himself.
39:08
The idea of witness, it has the root of the word in which we get martyr from.
39:15
And martyria in this case is basically what you think of, the testimony, the evidence that God has given.
39:24
So we have the false teachers bringing a nice newfangled doctrine into the church.
39:32
Jesus didn't come in the flesh. The witness of God is greater. The church is continually assaulted.
39:38
The individual, the family assaulted from without about the witness and testimony of men.
39:44
And we listen to them. May the Lord grant us greater wisdom and discernment not to receive carte blanche, the witness of men, but go to the true source.
39:58
The witness of God himself as revealed in scripture. The witness of God is greater concerning Jesus Christ.
40:09
In a dogmatic sense, this respect matters relating to the truth of Christianity.
40:17
The testimony which establishes and confirms and proclaims the messianic office of Christ and his divinity.
40:29
A little bit later, we're gonna see, I'll introduce it now.
40:35
The testimony of God in the prophecies of scripture concerning Jesus, the
40:40
Messiah, the endowments which have been conferred upon him and the works that have been done by him.
40:49
They've been done cooperation and the powerful operation of the Holy Spirit in the
40:55
Christian life. We have a blessed consciousness and realization and we actually receive and we testify, we embrace the witness of God.
41:08
We believe upon the name of the son and we find eternal life and salvation in him.
41:19
The witness of God is greater, literally Megas where we get the word mega from.
41:25
It's large, spacious, weighty evidence, testimony and witness.
41:32
These are things to be esteemed highly for their importance. These are gravitas things from God, weighty matters of great moment and import, weight.
41:48
The testimony of God is weightier. Last week, you may remember
41:55
I said, sometimes we have to have greater confidence in the objective reality than what we're feeling subjectively.
42:05
And we do that because the promises of God in Christ are true and sure and irrevocable.
42:15
And we're feeling not so much that way. Our life is not matching our profession perfectly.
42:21
We're having problems internally and from without. The testimony of God concerning his son,
42:30
Jesus Christ is true. We say, amen. We breathe a sigh of relief and then we walk in obedience and righteousness bolstered and strengthened again to carry on and to persevere in the faith.
42:45
Not because we feel good, but because our God is good and his testimony is true.
42:53
Weighty words of God. This is my son in whom
42:59
I am well pleased. This is the witness of God, which he has testified concerning his son.
43:12
God himself offers the testimony. We should hear him. The one who is truth himself, his attributes are laced with truth.
43:22
He cannot speak a lie. He says, this is my son. Believe on him, have eternal life, walk in his ways, walk in his life, be united to him, be united to all of those who are united to him.
43:38
God speaks authoritatively without lie and his testimony is true and sure.
43:46
Let's look at verse 10 now. This gets us to our second point, eternal life in the son.
43:57
It says in verse 10, he who believes in the son of God has the witness in himself.
44:06
We too testify that Jesus is the
44:12
Christ. As I get older, I feel that I probably have more wisdom than I did when
44:18
I was younger, but I see a gap in my knowledge. It seems the more I study, the more
44:24
I know, the greater the gap of knowledge there is for me. But one thing
44:29
I do know, I know that salvation is found in Jesus Christ. Every believer here, however weak our theology is, we know that salvation is found in Christ alone.
44:44
And we build our lives on it. Christ is our life. Life comes from him.
44:50
It's sustained by him. Eternal life has to come from him and be sustained by him. If there be eternal life, it's found only in the son.
45:02
We have this witness and this testimony in ourselves. The one thing that is really hard today,
45:13
I know theologically, I haven't thought this, but in a practical way,
45:19
I've thought about the unbelief of the wicked as being a passive activity.
45:26
It's not true. I've kind of felt like, well, they just don't understand. They just don't get it.
45:33
The entire world stands before the judgment of God. Do they believe the testimony of God or not?
45:45
You say, well, maybe it's passive. They just don't get it. They call him a liar.
45:52
The one who is truth himself, they call a liar because they have not believed in his testimony concerning the son.
46:01
Look at this. It says in verse 10 again, he who does not believe
46:06
God has made him a liar. What a blasphemous thing.
46:14
The one who should receive all of our worship, the one in whom we cannot create an idol and fashion something to bow down to, the one in whose name we must preserve and treasure, the one whom we should worship and obey.
46:30
We say in unbelief, God is a liar.
46:36
What a blasphemous thing to say and to believe. This is the status of the unbeliever in the world.
46:46
This is why we believe in the necessity of an irresistible grace, a work of God on the hearts of men to transform them into his son's people because they could not do it on their own.
47:01
God reconciles his enemies to himself in Christ. How great will the judgment be?
47:09
Psalm 110, Psalm 2, of those who don't kiss the son or acknowledge his kingship and his authority over the world and our own souls.
47:29
The time is interesting. I saw a, I want you to call it one of these little short videos.
47:38
And this person was talking about having a closer contact with the vibes of the universe.
47:48
And I was sitting and thinking, how could they put their confidence in the vibes of the universe?
47:59
Gonna buy a crystal. They're going to chant something. They're going to light some candle.
48:05
They're going to flip over some cards, but they will call God a liar and choose that and said, what blasphemy, what idolatry exists?
48:16
Kiss the son, lest he be angry and his wrath is kindled, but a literal.
48:27
What is the testimony of God concerning his son? At the fall,
48:33
Ismael could tell you from class that I teach, he promised the son and he promised a salvation in him in the proto evangelium.
48:43
He promised that Satan would be crushed under the foot of our
48:49
Lord, Jesus Christ. The first gospel preached back in Genesis three. DJ mentioned biblical theology this morning in relation to the psalm.
49:01
And if we were to trace the 300 plus messianic prophecies in the
49:08
Old Testament and find their complete and utter fulfillment in Christ, we would learn and we would understand it's mathematically impossible that Jesus is not the
49:21
Christ. And God has twice in the New Testament cracked open the sky of heaven and said, this is my son, baptism, transfiguration.
49:37
The father says, this is my son. The son is invested with miraculous power and signs and works.
49:48
He preaches like no one else has preached. He understands the law so perfectly because he himself is the law giver and accepting his sacrificial death on the cross for your atonement.
50:03
The father says, this is my son. He has done the work. I will grant salvation in his name.
50:10
And has the father not testified and witnessed in the resurrection of Jesus Christ that this is my son?
50:20
Has he not testified when the son in the ascension comes and sits at the right hand of God, claiming the authority that is rightfully his?
50:31
Has God not spoken and testified through his mighty works?
50:38
John 5, 17 says, my father has been working until now and I have been working.
50:45
What of Christ's sinless life? His expounding of the scriptures?
50:51
What about his humble service? What about his uncompromising and otherworldly royal love?
50:58
His suffering, his prophetic words about himself? Destroy this temple in three days.
51:05
I will raise it up. There's also the witness of the Holy Spirit.
51:10
We talked about this a little last week. The conception of Jesus in the womb of the
51:18
Virgin Mary, his visible descent upon Christ at his baptism, the effectual conquest, the power of the spirit, the conquest of the demonic spirits.
51:36
Jesus said, if I cast out devils by the spirit of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.
51:44
Matthew chapter 12. And finally, the visible powerful descent on the apostles and the 120 gathered to furnish them with gifts and powers to preach
52:03
Christ and his gospel to the world after he himself had gone to heaven.
52:10
And for us, brethren, the Holy Spirit is here with us, dwells in us.
52:19
All of these things testify. There's so many more. The reality of who
52:24
Christ is and the salvation that could be found. He will continue to be present among us.
52:33
You must believe in the testimony God has given about his son.
52:42
Well, let's take up the remaining verses beginning in verse 11.
52:49
This is the testimony that God has given us eternal life.
53:01
We need to stop and pause here. God has given us eternal life.
53:11
It doesn't end with our death and burial. When we die, we enter into the presence of the
53:19
Lord. On the last day, these bodies that are frail and decaying will be raised, glorified.
53:28
These bodies reconstituted, reconstructed, remade for glory, for eternity.
53:41
Surely God has given us eternal life in the son. He's granted it to us according to his counsel and his will.
53:50
He has appointed to us all the means required to bring us to faith. He placed you, many of you in a
53:57
Christian home. Children, rejoice that you were raised in a Christian home. It is a gift of God for you to be raised in a
54:05
Christian home. Not everybody can say that. It's no accident that you were born into a
54:11
Christian family. It's no accident that your parents, little ones today, your parents brought you to church today.
54:18
They're preaching Christ to you today. You must rejoice that this is the state that you are in.
54:25
God has been merciful to us. He's pointed all the means required to bring us to faith.
54:33
He supplied the power in the spirit to do it. He's given it to us by promise.
54:40
He's done it in covenant. He confers Christ and all his benefits to everyone who believes.
54:50
Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved. It's wonderful, isn't it?
54:58
Life is in the son. Eternal life is found in his own person.
55:03
You don't have to turn there, but in 1 John 1, concerning this word of life, the life was manifested and we have seen and bear witness
55:11
John would say and declare to you that eternal life, which was with the father has now been manifested to us.
55:22
John in his gospel says in him, referring to Christ, was life and the life was the light of men.
55:34
There be eternal life. It's gonna come from the life giver, the light of men,
55:40
Jesus Christ. Colossians 3 says, when Christ who is our life,
55:47
I just said that a few moments ago, Christ is our life. I wanna pause here for application and drive into this a bit.
55:56
Does your life scream that Christ is your life?
56:04
Does everything about you scream that Christ is my life?
56:11
He's everything to me. That's where we should be. We shouldn't be known for our political leanings as much.
56:20
We shouldn't be known about what we like to do vocationally. What should scream out of us?
56:27
What should be unmistakable in us is that Christ is our life, that we are united to him.
56:33
Eternal life is found in him. That should be what defines us. I think we all have some room for growth and we pray now and ask the
56:43
Holy Spirit to reveal to us the ways in which Christ is not displayed that we might turn from them.
56:51
But also to stir holy affections in us that Christ would be our all in all, that we would love him and treasure him above all things.
57:01
Oh Lord, do this in us, your people today. Kindle these cold hearted selves that we are.
57:09
Do something in us, ignite a flame in us, cause us to love and treasure Christ above all and to live accordingly.
57:16
Oh Lord, please do it in us. God's given us eternal life and this life is in his son.
57:29
I think this is almost a summary of the gospel, isn't it? It's almost a summary of the scriptural record that God has been merciful.
57:39
He's granted eternal life and this life is only found in Christ. Well, let's keep going.
57:48
In verse 12 it says, he who has the son has life.
57:55
It's really that simple. Not only does Christ have to die and go to the cross and to be the atonement for our sins, but we have to lay hold of him.
58:07
We have to take him as our own. He has to give himself to us and unite himself to us or we have no life.
58:18
But all of you in Christ, you can say, oh, whatever befalls you today, all of you can say that I have the son and therefore
58:27
I have life. But oh, the despair of the world, he who does not have the son of God does not have life.
58:42
I've told you that I've enjoyed watching true crime being solved and sometimes they'll show a video and they don't show the gory details, but they'll show the victim just before they get shot or something.
58:59
And it's kind of in a pit of your stomach, you see a person, they're going on in their life and then in a few seconds, their life is going to be taken from them.
59:08
And it's haunting to see that on film or something. That's the condition of the world around us.
59:19
The unbelievers without Christ, they're going about their business, but there awaits a certain doom for them.
59:29
We're responsible and obligated to preach Christ to every creature under heaven and at least warn them and let them know the truth.
59:37
To cry out to them, there's only one path, there's only one way, it's the way, the truth and the life, it's
59:43
Christ. And we should tell everyone we come in contact with that there is a way of salvation.
59:50
God has given eternal life and this life is in the son.
59:55
And we should be unashamed to say that he who does not have the son of God does not have life.
01:00:03
It's very sobering. Eternal punishment for all of your sins.
01:00:10
Can you imagine all of your sins and the weight of that guilt hanging over you and the just punishment of God falling on you because you deserve it.
01:00:21
What a better plan to run to Christ and find salvation in him.
01:00:28
We should be more zealous and eager to make the glories of Christ known.
01:00:36
Well, the last point is maybe the most important in terms of the application of this section because this seems to be, we know those other things to be true, but John reveals a very distinct purpose.
01:00:53
I read this in the first sermon, I believe that I gave in first John. It says in verse 13, these things
01:01:00
I have written to you who believe in the name of the son of God.
01:01:05
So everybody listening, John, as an instrument of the
01:01:11
Holy Spirit is writing to God's people. This is what he has to say for us.
01:01:19
I'm writing to you who believe in the name of the son of God. We are those who believe and we rejoice that we are those who believe.
01:01:28
He wants us to know that you can know with certainty that you have eternal life.
01:01:39
Assurance is something that Christians often struggle with. I think this is one of those great verses.
01:01:45
This section is very helpful. I believe in the testimony of God. I believe that Jesus has done it.
01:01:56
I believe the spirit is powerful to apply this salvation to me.
01:02:02
I receive the testimony of God is true and I live and I act in response to it.
01:02:13
These things were written for believers. Sometimes we read in first John, I've mentioned that, boy,
01:02:18
I'm not really doing that very well. He's spurring us on to love and good works. He's spurring us on to greater heights of obedience.
01:02:26
He's calling us to repent of sin, to root out unbelief and worldliness, to be discerning and to reject the false teachers.
01:02:38
But in the end, he wants to comfort his people that you may know that you have eternal life in Christ and that you might persevere, that you may continue to believe in the name of the son of God.
01:03:01
Everybody starts off the race with great energy and great zeal.
01:03:09
Marriage, engagement, the early days of marriage, it's so exciting and thrilling, but it really is only good if you persevere.
01:03:26
When you're married for 50 years and you're not as beautiful as you once were, there better be some perseverance.
01:03:33
When you can't walk and you're providing medical care for your spouse, there better be some perseverance in that love and commitment.
01:03:46
So too for us. On our deathbed, may we have even greater confidence than we do in this moment reading this passage because of the faithfulness of God and because we kept persevering, clinging to his precious promises, running time and again to Christ that we would continue to believe in the name of the son of God.
01:04:17
Do you believe on the name of the son of God? Keep believing. Covenant to never let go of the hem of his garment.
01:04:27
Say, I will never leave you. Lord, you won't forsake me. I'm going to cling to that promise and I'm going to hang on for dear eternal life.
01:04:37
This is the plight of the Christian. What a glorious thing that John would write to us, that we would believe on Christ, that we'd have great assurance of that faith and that we would persevere, that we might have hope and experience the fullness of joy.
01:05:01
A couple of words of application, we'll close here. Belief.
01:05:14
Do you have genuine faith in Christ? Is Christ your life?
01:05:25
Some important questions. Do you believe? Second, do you have great assurance and hope?
01:05:36
I think this is one of those times of objective realities. We don't always feel hopeful.
01:05:42
We always don't feel assured, but we believe the testimony of God concerning his son.
01:05:51
Rest in the promise, rest in the truth. Believe again. Have assurance and hope.
01:06:02
Do you believe that salvation and eternal life is found in Christ alone? Yes. Continue to believe.
01:06:11
Persevere in hope. This should cause us to be filled with joy.
01:06:17
God has saved us. We are his people. He's promised to make us holy.
01:06:24
He's promised to deliver us all the way to the end and to grant us eternity.
01:06:31
Surely God has spoken. Christ has accomplished. The spirit has applied.
01:06:40
We have salvation in him. Persevere in hope. Believe the testimony of God.
01:06:49
Believe on the name of the son, the Lord Jesus Christ.
01:06:55
Amen? Amen. Let's pray together. Oh Lord, we thank you for a message that is like a drumbeat in our ears.
01:07:13
You convince us time and again that Jesus is the Christ and we agree with your testimony, oh
01:07:20
God. We acknowledge that Jesus is your beloved son in whom you are well pleased.
01:07:28
And oh Lord, we are well pleased in him too. Oh Lord, I pray that you'd grant us greater assurance of faith, a greater dependence upon Christ, a greater longing for the spirit, a greater desire for fellowship with the father, the son and the

And we ask this in Jesus' name, amen. Let's continue our worship with the giving of tithes and offerings.
01:09:16
Please stand and let's pray together. Oh Lord, I thank you for your people.
01:09:30
Lord, I pray that we would be productive and labor and we'd be faithful with what you have entrusted to us and time and abilities and treasure.
01:09:41
And oh Lord, I pray that we would give and give cheerfully that we would bring the whole tithe into the storehouse.
01:09:49
Oh Lord, I pray that you would cause us to repent who have held back and have said that they don't have faith that you will provide for us for our needs because we hold it back and reserve.
01:10:00
Oh Lord, I pray that we would give as an act of worship, an act of gratitude and that you would provide for us and our needs.
01:10:09
And oh Lord, we ask for these tithes and offerings to be used for the advance of your kingdom.
01:10:15
And we ask this all in Jesus' name. Let us now rejoice and give glory to God in the singing of the
01:10:26

Let us have greater expectancy and joy as we enter into this time of our worship.
01:11:33
The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts.
01:11:38
We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord. It is good and right so to do.
01:11:46
It is right and a good and joyful thing that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to you, oh
01:11:54
Holy Lord, Father Almighty, Everlasting God, because you sent your beloved son to redeem us from sin and death and to make us heirs in him of everlasting life, that when he shall come again in power and great triumph to judge the world, we may without shame or fear rejoice to behold his appearing.

Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven, we praise and magnify your glorious name, evermore praising you and singing.

Oh Lord, we rejoice. There's provision for our salvation, our sanctification, our spiritual nourishing.

We thank you for the sacrament of the Lord's Supper. We thank you for sensible signs and seals that say, look at Christ and his benefits and then says, look, take

Christ and his benefits as your own. Oh Lord, we thank you for the creatures of bread and wine.
01:14:40
We thank you that you have given Christ and him crucified for us, that we might eat the bread, that we might drink the cup, that we might discern the body and blood of Christ crucified for us.
01:15:02
We thank you for this good gift. It's in Jesus' name that we pray, amen.
01:15:14
Our Lord Jesus, on the night in which he was betrayed, we have blessed and broke it.

He gave it to his disciples saying, hey, this is my body.
01:15:33
Likewise, he took the cup after supper saying, this cup is the new covenant in my blood.

Drink from it. For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the
01:15:46
Lord's death until he comes. Therefore, we proclaim the faith.
01:15:53
Christ has died, Christ has risen, Christ will come again. Let's come to the table now by praying together in unison.
01:16:05
We do not presume to come to this your table, oh merciful
01:16:10
Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in your manifold and great mercies.
01:16:17
We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under your table, but you are the same

Lord who always shows mercy. Grant us therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of your dear son,
01:16:33
Jesus Christ, and to drink of his blood, that our sinful bodies may be made clean by his body, and our souls washed through his most precious blood, and that we may evermore dwell in him and he in us, amen.

Well, we've had the privilege of singing psalms, confessing our sin and being assured of pardon, feasting at his table.

But having them imprinted on our hearts, may we grow and increase daily in the faith which is at work in every good deed.

I should point out, some of you may not know this, but we have articulated in the past, there are postures in worship in the church, and we lift holy hands, we kneel, bow down, all of these things.
01:29:13
And I think that the posture of reception is open -handedness and asking the Lord to fill our mouths and our hands so much.
01:29:21
So, and there is a posture, you don't have to do it, of receiving the prayer, of receiving the blessing, which is open -handed, like this.
01:29:29
Receive now the blessing of our Lord. The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the
