Watch Out For That Woman! - [Proverbs 6-7]

Well Sunday nights we've been in the attributes of God going alphabetically although tonight's a little bit different. I was privileged to speak last Sunday morning during the Sunday school hour in Proverbs 6 and I want to finish that tonight.

And then also teach Proverbs 7 if you'll take your Bibles maybe you only have a New Testament. So there should be a black pew Bible in front of you. Believe me you'll need a Bible tonight. And we're going to look at Proverbs chapter 6 finishing it off.

Teaching Sons Wisdom, Work, and Integrity

And then Proverbs 7 basically under the theme that you need to teach your sons. Dads, dads need to teach their sons many things about life, about God, about righteousness, about those who are unrighteous.

And Solomon in his Solomonic way teaches these Proverbs, inspired Proverbs about what do we teach sons now. Certainly if you say I'm older my sons are gone. This is good for you because you need to know what to teach your grandkids if you have daughters only these are still good truths to teach your daughters.

But the way it's set up in this teaching style he writes to sons. And last Sunday morning we looked at four of the five things that fathers should teach their sons. Now does anybody remember those first four from Proverbs chapter 6 in Sunday school anyone?

You can just shout them out if you want. Number one if you're in some kind of financial entanglement because you've given yourself as a surety to something or someone you need to get out of that quickly.

Interesting advice. And we talked a little bit about finances. The second one was you should not be sinfully lazy. You should work. And he says look at these ants. And out of the hundred species of ants and the kinds of ants he says look at this ant.

And the Palestinian ant was industrious and was a hard worker had no leader. And Solomon said sons you need to work. Number three he said in verses 12 to 15 of Proverbs 6 don't be devious. And he looks at the evil wicked man and says that's not how you're supposed to be.

And then he says in verses 16 through 19 in that very poetic lively style there are six things which the Lord hates. Yes seven which are an abomination to him. And when you see that in scripture he's basically saying the seventh one is the worst.

The seventh one is having the most emphasis. And he says basically the Lord hates many things but he especially hates false witnesses who utter lies. That's number six. But number seven even more. So the one who spreads strife among brothers.

So those are the first four things that Solomon teaches his son about life. I want to encourage you all because your teachers you have been blessed to sit under the ministry of the word from MacArthur to R .C. Sproul, Steve Lawson comes all these people come here and preach or we can listen to them on the radio.

And you are taught things for a reason. And one of the reasons is so you might think properly about God. Another reason is so you might honor him with your life and obedience. And a third one would be so that you might do what teach other people.

You don't want to be the classic dead sea. How many people have floated on top of the Dead Sea. And when I say on top of that's exactly what I mean because there are so many bromides and so much salt on top of the Dead Sea.

I have a picture of me basically laying on top of the Dead Sea reading a newspaper the Dead Sea Times or whatever it was called and you just are on top of the water. You know if you swim in your swimming pool in the backyard and in the ocean you're more buoyant in the ocean.

And the Dead Sea is just filled with all these bromides and salts. And it is dead for a reason. And that's because there's no what outlet. And so we learn about God to think properly to then obey and then to teach others.

And so Solomon here in an inspired way says son we need to have a little father-son chat. And as you would imagine he has one more thing to talk about and that is immorality. Verses 20 through 35. Solomon is going to sit his son down.

We don't know how old the son is. Certainly their age appropriate ways to discuss things with your children especially when it comes to sex. But you'll notice here it's all appropriate. It's all fine to teach.

It's all good to teach your children. And you can just tweak it enough for the age of your children. And he basically says in verses 20 through 35 of chapter 6 you must avoid the immoral married woman.

Now we could take that and stretch it and apply it to all kinds of immorality fornication adultery homosexuality. But the context here is going to be purity in sex life and abstaining from sexual immorality.

He does it in chapter 2 he says avoid it. Chapter 5 chapter 6 chapter 7 and chapter 9. Ignorance is not bliss when it comes to the subject. And if you have sons and daughters you need to teach them what the Bible says.

Let's take a look at the passage in verses 20 and following. And then 7 is almost an amplification of this last section of Proverbs 6. And this morning I said we're gonna have drama tonight. It's not because I'm going to be acting.

It's because chapter 7 is dramatic in fashion. It is amazing to just watch 7. I mean if you are going to sleep tonight either. A. I've made the Bible boring. And that's a sin. Or you're boring yourself because 7 is so exciting.

The Commandment as a Lamp and the Danger of the Adulterous Woman

My son he says Proverbs 620. Observe the commandment of your father and do not forsake the teaching of your mother. See both mother and father teaching the son. Bind them continually on your heart. Tie them around your neck.

He's saying there comes truth from us from God to us to you son. And I want you to try to remember this truth. I want you to fasten it to your mind bind it to your hearts. What would be some other synonyms for securing one thing to another.

I thought of welding. I thought of soldering. I thought of taking some kind of rivets and putting things together. I thought about those little cable ties. And you tie things together. And he's saying don't lose this.

This is important information. This is not just kind of life skills. What's the batting average of you know your favorite batter. This is important information. And he's just using language. Very figurative Hebrew language to say don't forget.

It's kind of like Columbo. He leaves the door. He's gonna leave. He's gonna walk out the door. And just before the door shuts. What does he do. He comes back in this detective on TV in the seventies. And he says there's just one more thing I wanna ask.

In this particular case Solomon isn't asking. He's saying I told you all these things son. But don't forget this. Memorize it ingest it haven't impressed on your mind. Keep away from the adulterous. Look at verse 22 through 24.

When you walk about these things that I have taught you they'll guide you. That's straight out of Psalm 23 language with the Good Shepherd. How the Good Shepherd guides and tens in and takes care the flock.

These words that I teach you from my own wisdom derived from God's counsel will shepherd you. When you sleep they'll watch over you. What language. Just very vivid language. And when you awake they'll talk to you.

For the commandment is a lamp that sounds familiar. And the teaching is a light and reproof. Subdiscipline are the way of life. For what. Singular purpose. In this context verse 24 tells us for this particular reason this is the purpose statement 20 to 35 to keep you from the evil woman.

The woman of evil literally from the smooth tongue of the adulterous. She is a smooth talking woman. And son you need to watch out for that woman. Now I've thought is my I have my kids and I thought about saying and have had said said to the kids.

Now here's kind of a couple the older ones. These are the facts. Here's the birds and bees talk etc etc. And we work through those issues. But in and of my own self I don't think I'd ever say now by the way son you watch out for that a moral married woman.

I don't think I get that blatant that specific. I would probably just say watch out be pure be clean save yourself for marriage. But here's Solomon says you teach your kids run from that kind of woman run.

Just imagine the kid looking at Solomon. Solomon knowing what sexual sin will do to a person listening to his father. Verse 25 it says do not desire her beauty in your heart. That's where sin always starts.

That's where sexual sin always starts in the heart of the person. Nor let her catch you with her eyelids. This reminds me the sermon on the mount with Matthew 5 about having our heart captivated by God's Word and not with some woman not with staring long enough at the lady.

So she catches you staring at her. And you have that desire. Literally the word Hamad in Hebrew is to lust to covet. You look at this girl and in your heart you see how pretty she is. And it's not just pretty.

It's pretty and sexual. And your heart pines away and covets and lust. And it's not just she's a beautiful creation of God it is I must have and I must own and I must use. It's the first step to sin always starts in the heart.

By the way Bruce Waltke insightfully says in his masterful commentary on Proverbs the command assumes that people can govern their hearts by binding the parental teaching to it. Did you get that. He's saying watch out for your life for your sexual life for the purity of your life.

And you're gonna do it by watching out for your heart with the word people say well you know this a Bible church and whenever we get counseling it just here's a couple Bible verses and call me in the morning.

We shouldn't just throw Bible verses out but Bible verses Word of God as it is ingested and and thought about can help in this very area. They painted eyelids back in those days as well. And Solomon says it starts in your heart and you better be careful.

Why can you imagine verse 26 a tragic horrible awful ending. For on an account of a harlot one is reduced to what a loaf a bread and an adulterous are literally a man's wife hunts for the precious life.

What a catastrophe MacArthur. I remember him saying when I talk to the men and women at the Masters College I tell them you better brace yourself now because sexual sin can cost you your ministry even when you're 21 lifelong consequences.

And I find it interesting that you can see Solomon pushing. And he's basically saying adultery is more costly than harlotry. Verse 27. What language. Isn't this a amazing way to teach a kid. Can a man take fire in his bosom and his clothes not be burned.

What's the answer with the walk is over the other night Wednesday night and we had a little fire pit outside and all the burning hot red coals. And this verse is on my mind as I was studying I said Luke what would it feel like if I went and got these big coals.

And then you had just like a swimsuit on like a little kinda thin speedo suit or something. And you had that suit on. You were sitting right there and I took that big huge ember that burning hot ember and just dropped it right on your lap.

What would it feel like. You know you can just imagine I'll take your breath away kind of thing that's hot. And that's exactly what Solomon saying they had fire back then if you are going to engage in this it's gonna be bad cost full and his clothes will not be burned.

You think you're gonna skate in and out without being caught. Think you're gonna be like the other. The men in the fire who they get out of the fire and even their clothes did not smell like smoke. Wrong thinking illicit sex.

All sex outside a marriage is like playing with what fire. Or can a man walk on hot coals and his feet not be scorched. Rhetorical question. We know the answer. So is the one who goes into his neighbor's wife.

Whoever touches her will not go unpunished. There are consequences. There are severe consequences dire consequences not going to be unpunished. Maybe the husband of the woman will punish you. Maybe society will punish you.

Maybe venereal disease will punish you are. Maybe God will punish you. Because first Thessalonians 4 says when it comes to sex in God is what he is the avenger of these kind of sin. And then he he pushes the idea with a good comparison.

So we would learn verse 30. Men do not despise a thief if he steals to satisfy himself when he's hungry. If you got a steal for food we wouldn't despise that man. We wouldn't think ill of him. He shouldn't be doing it.

But we would understand. But when he's found he must repay sevenfold. He must give all the substance of his house. We can understand that we're not going to celebrate it. But the one who steals another wife you don't pay back seven times.

You're looked down upon verse 32. The one who commits adultery steals the woman with a woman is lacking sense. He would destroy himself. He who would destroy himself does it. What's he gonna get wounds and disgrace.

He will find. His reproach will not be blotted out not forgotten. For jealousy enrages a man. The husband will come after you. And he will not spare in the day of vengeance. He will not accept any ransom.

Here's some money. Here's some stuff that I own. He will not spare in the day of vengeance. And he will not be content though you give him many gifts. Solomon says to his son it is stupid to be sexually immoral especially with a married woman.

It's like a it's kind of a form of suicide. He's telling his kid no matter what you give they will never say oh that's fine. No big deal. And now so we get a wider eyed picture. We move to chapter 7. These are just linked together.

The Anatomy of Seduction and the Young Man Lacking Sense

Link together. We see the call for Solomon son to watch out for the adulterous woman. Verse 1. Chapter 7. My son keep my words and treasure my commandments within you. The whole context is gonna be sexual sin.

When it comes to sexual sin think about the Bible. Think about what the father has taught you. How do you. How do you keep these kind of commandments like a treasure. They didn't have secure banks back in those days.

They might hide them. They might dig a little area to secure things. But as you would take up money and put it in a bank. So it's what is it called FDLIC approved or something or some kinda guarantee FDI FDIC.

Isn't that a card to carry a gun in Massachusetts. That's another story. Alright. But you want something secured treasuring these commandments within you. And you don't keep these treasures under a rock are in the wall are buried out in a field.

You treasure them. Where? You burrow them down in your heart in the fabric of your life. He says in verse 2 with the same kind of repetition. Keep my commandments and live. Don't keep my commandments and die.

And my teaching as the apple of your eye. Do you protect your eye if somebody's gonna poke it? Maybe any other external organ. You don't have that kind of protection. And you say you know what I carefully guard.

Protect the word in Hebrew is teaching as the little man of the eye. What's the little man of your eye? The pupil. You better guard that pupil. It's tender. It's valuable. And he's using all kinds of language eye and hand and parts of the body to say with the totality of your being watch out.

I have to stop just for a minute. Give a little exhortation. I like to preach some dads. If you have sons. Have you talked to them about this kind of issue. It can be appropriate language when they're five.

You don't need to sit down and say that's an adulterous over there. Watch out. I mean what do they know at five. But I want to be the one teaching my kids about this issue. I don't want the church being primary.

I don't want the school being primary. I don't want the people in Boulder Colorado teaching. I'm the teacher fathers. Your sons will not get this by osmosis. You know what they get by osmosis? Ignorance.

And this is the kind of ignorance that we're gonna have to watch out for because there are crafty subtle tricky ladies out there. And of course you ladies are saying why is this not saying hey daughters watch out for this man who's after you.

Well you can make the implication if you'd like both men and women true or false have fallen in Adam true verse 3. He just keeps adding it on. Bind them on your fingers. And you can almost think of the Jewish phylacteries that would be wrapped around and strapped around the middle finger just showing by visible example.

Tie these things close to you. Write them on the tablet of your heart. Tattoo your heart with these things. Engrave it. All this metaphorical internalization. Say to wisdom. I marry you. That's what it's basically trying to say.

Say to wisdom. You're my sister. I'm gonna make a commitment to you wisdom. I take this person wisdom to be my lawfully wedded wife. That's the kind of language say to wisdom. I make a commitment to you for better for worse.

That's what people do when we stand right here. Those that get married in they make commitments to one to the other. They want to fulfill those. And that's what the idea here this walk he said you are my sister underscores the Sun's commitment to an intimate and confidential relationship to this idealized figure a parental teaching.

Why would all this happen. The same reason is chapter 6. Look at verse 5 chapter 7 that they may keep you the words the Word of God the words of Solomon from an adulterous from the foreigner who flatters with her slick smooth words.

Here comes the drama. The next set of verses from chapter 7. Verse 6 through 23 is a picture of Solomon looking through the lattice peeking into the street and watching this young man be demolished by this woman.

And it's as if Solomon is taking his son saying you know what. Stand up on that little box there you're gonna peek out this window with me. You gonna watch what's gonna happen. Because as you see this young man go to the slaughterhouse.

You don't want to do that. I wonder if Solomon was thinking about his own father on top of a roof looking down at Bathsheba. We don't know that. But here we see the anatomy of a seduction. This is like a PBS narrative kinda the black and white film that kinda shakes a little bit.

This is a historical documentary set in a way so you go wow. I mean could the Bible just say do not commit sexual sin. All sin all sexual activity outside of marriage is sin. The Bible could say that.

Right. Why do we go through all this trouble all these metaphorical figurative language thing. So it is impressive. When I read chapter 7 I just go wow I don't want that. And I want that. Here's this eyewitness account peeking through the lattice.

So this man this young son can resist. Because as I said this morning to be forewarned is to be what forearmed one man said. The father graphically portrays the unchaste wife's danger in a gripping autobiographical autobiographical narrative of her seduction of a gullible dimwit.

And about 10 times in my sermon notes I've wrote I've written three letters all together to form a word and those letters are D U H. There's your moral woman. You're gonna deceive this kinda guy. And you're gonna need to fortify yourself against that.

I can prove it. Look at verse 7 action-packed. And I saw among the naive and discerned among the youths a young man lacking sense. This guy was the dimwit. And sometimes when you read the word naive and lacking sense you think he's just uneducated.

He doesn't know. He's never had seduction 101 taught to him before. So he just kinda wandered around doesn't really know. But when you study in the Proverbs someone who lacks sense you will find people who lack sense need a rod to the back Proverbs 10 you'll find people that lack sense despise their neighbor Proverbs 11.

You'll find that people that lack sense pursue vain things Proverbs 12. And you'll find people who lack sense becoming surety when they ought not to Proverbs 17. This is not some person who is uneducated.

Oh I just never understood differential equations because I've never been taught them. No this is someone who's got the edge of depravity and who is not just naive but he is naive and he is sinful. And he's lacking sense wandering around.

Yes he's gullible. Yes he's untaught. Yes he's unexperienced. Yes he's naive. But there's a an edge to it. And what does he do. Verse 8. Passing through the street near her corner. And he takes the way to her house.

He's gonna get nice and close getting right up there. You look back at Proverbs 5. Verse 8 it says. Keep your way far from her house if you want to stay away from sexual sin. Don't get close. Do not go near the door of her house Proverbs 4.

Do not enter the path of the wicked avoid it do not pass by turn away from it and pass on. Give sinful people who could make you stumble a wide berth run. But what does he do. You know what. It's kinda the night time thing because most other people can't see and maybe God can't see either.

And if you look at verse 9 we see the night time for descriptions of time to show that it's past twilight and getting dark in the twilight in the evening in the middle the night and in the darkness isolated alone safe no one can see.

We are going to enjoy ourselves because nobody's gonna notice. And you know if I went there in the daytime my father might see me and say now don't you go around that lady's house in the middle the day I saw you stop that it's night time.

Even the Bible talks about people like to sin when the darkness the dark of night literally in the center. Same word for the center of the eye the pupil. And this word here going to this path taking the path in verse 8 isn't just you know I just happen to take a wrong turn.

I didn't have my GPS monitor. This is stepping marching going up with the determination to kinda get there. Oh if I take a left and I take a right I happen to be at her house. This is amazing. And here we find in verse 10 as one man called her the vixen.

Here's the vixen. Here's the temptress. And with great Hebrew language it says. My new american center says. And behold this is language that says take a look now. I take a picture last longer. I don't know where who comes out of this house.

And behold it's sudden. It demands attention. And the hunt is on. Wanna go hunting. She just started the hunt. A woman comes to meet him. On the outside she's dressed like a harlot. And on the inside she's cunning of heart.

On the outside it's all show. On the inside the cunning of heart means hidden. He's naive and lacking sense. And she is smart and she knows what to get. And she knows how to get it. She is clever. He is ignorant.

He is naive she is secretive. And she's got the advertisement of her clothes on there. And as we would all imagine she is dressed to kill. She's guarded in heart clothes tell it all. But inside she's hiding.

And that commentary I was telling you about from Bruce Waltke. Listen to this. If Potiphar's wife could make brilliant Joseph look guilty. How much more can this sly vixen make the brainless Hulk look guilty should they be caught.

This is not a fair fight. This is one hand tied behind your back. Kinda deal. Call the match right now and look at how she is. Verse 11. She's boisterous rebellious. Her feet don't remain at home. She has the roving lustful urges.

And she's gotta be out. She's loud and stubborn. Never at home always agitated. You look at a clothes washer what you see in the middle that spindle. What's that kind of action agitation. She is just can't sit still.

She can't sit still because she has desires going to and fro hither and thither. She is now in the street she's down the squares and lurks at every corner. She's not at home where she should be. It's like we're watching a movie of what not to do.

She's lurking lying in ambush lying in wait with a hostile purpose. That's what that word means in Hebrew. She doesn't care about culture and being out alone. And here comes the seduction verse 13 to 20.

And she goes against all cultural conventions because she knows what to do. So she seizes him. You don't do that. And she kisses him with a brazen face. She says to him with a brazen look of Jeremiah 3 3.

The brazen look of a prostitute grabs him and just smashes her face to his and kisses. Forget cultural propriety and forget how they would act back in those days. Can you imagine you're not supposed to let your hair hang loose or expose your arm or your ankle in public in those days.

And she just grabbing the guy putting her arm arms around her and kissing him. And those arms are acting like a noose may I tell you. And the noose is getting tighter and tighter shock treatment. Then it's amazing that people hear what they want to hear.

This could be a whole sermon right here to assuage his conscience to talk properly. She gets religious. She grabs him. She's kissing him. She's brazen. She's boisterous. And now she's going to say I'm spiritual.

I'm a Christian. I'm a follower of God. I everything's fine. And I do what I'm told. Well I'm a Christian. I was due verse 14 to offer peace offerings. Today I paid my vows. Let's flip over just to look at some of these vows in Leviticus 7.

Leviticus 7 a book that we rarely read to our own chagrin because you can't understand Hebrews without Leviticus. But I do think it's important to read Leviticus 7 11 to 18 so you can see what she's doing.

And she's telling him I've paid my sacrifice. But what he doesn't know he's the next sacrifice. And look at Leviticus chapter 7 how spiritual she is. This is way beyond dating unbelievers. Now this is the law of sacrifice of peace offerings which shall be presented to the Lord.

Verse 12 Leviticus 7. If he offers it by way of Thanksgiving then along with the sacrifice of Thanksgiving he shall offer unleavened cakes mixed with oil and unleavened wafers spread with oil. See this is what she was doing with cakes of well-stirred fine flour mixed with oil with the sacrifice of his peace offerings for Thanksgiving he shall present his offering with cakes of leavened bread.

Of this he shall present one of every offering as a contribution to the Lord. It shall belong to the priest who sprinkles the blood in the peace offerings. Now here's where we get into our tie-in with Proverbs 7.

Now as for the flesh of the sacrifice of his Thanksgiving peace offering it shall be eaten on the what day of his offering. He shall not leave any of it until morning or any of it over until morning. But if the sacrifice of his offering is a votive etc etc.

Point being when you make the peace offering you are consecrating this to God. And then you go home and you have to eat the rest to the offering. She says today I paid my vows and I've worshipped God and and I'm gonna take it home and have a feast.

After all it's a a religious celebration. We don't want to spoil the meat. Now do we these are great tactics sad tactics. But she knows exactly what she's doing. How could love so right be so wrong. Love were engaged.

God wants us happy. You can just name all the things people talk about. Food is for the body in food is for the stomach. And then she pours the flattery on. We don't even know if she's ever met this guy before.

And then look at this. This is just so sad. Here's Solomon teaching his son this very thing. Therefore I've come out to meet you. You. You're just the next guy in line to seek your presence earnestly.

I have found you. I mean how hypocritical can you get. I've been out from this morning since the early morning looking around for you. I found you. She's so calculatingly kisses him so calculatingly talks about religion.

And now so calculatingly talks about you are the one. And then she pours it on verse 16. I have spread my couch with covering. This is where I want you to take me with colored linens of Egypt. I have sprinkled my bed with myrrh aloes and cinnamon.

Every little expenses for you. I did it all for you. Those things when I was put the cinnamon on and other things had your name on. And what she's trying to do is she's trying to paint a picture of delights that a young man in those days would just go.

All that would be great. Imagine the horrible smells of the day. And there's none of that there. Myrrh aloes cinnamon fine Egyptian linen. She's rich. There's all these spices. And it's the right kind of colors to colored linens.

Status high-quality garments aphrodisiac smells. And that she blatantly does it, it's just blatant. Now there's a woman in the east thousands of years ago saying this to a man she's probably never met before she's married.

And she says basically let's go have intimacy. Come let us drink our fill of love until morning. Let us delight ourselves with caresses. Love. How about lust. This has nothing to do with love. This is carnal and fleshly.

If you look back over to Proverbs 5 you will see that drinking is often used in the Bible as a metaphor for sex. Properly in in Proverbs 515 husband and wife drink water from your own cistern and fresh water from your own.

Well she's you know we're gonna have a party. We're gonna have a party. There was a party outside of our house today. Two houses down there's a swimming pool and then there's a lake over there. And they're having this big party.

And they got the kinda karaoke microphone out and I was they were listening. I was listening to some of the songs and they were doing songs like from Greece and Olivia Newton-John and all these different songs.

And wham and these songs. I just thought why would I ever have to hear those in my own house again. And so I'm listening to these. And then the guy gets the microphone and they're all saying thank you for coming to the graduation party.

And this one guy just yells out we're gonna party all night long. I just go. I said Luke give me those binoculars. Who are those people. She is so direct so bold so brazen. And she says we are going to drink deeply.

We are going to be sassy. Sassy. Easy for me to see. How do I want to say that word insatiated sounds kinda like Satan to me. Almost. You're surely not going to die. This fruit looks good. That that that looks fine.

Everything's good. She's independent. And then she says to say you know what if you're. If you're wanting to say no. Because you need reassurance. I've got reassurance for you. For my husband. Literally he does.

She doesn't even call him that. She says the man the man her husband is not at my house. She doesn't call it a home in Hebrew. He's gone on a long journey. He's out of town. He's at some courtyard Marriott doing business.

He's never gonna come back. He's just gone. And by the way I'm married and therefore since I'm married there is no commitment needed on my behalf except tonight. Tonight's all we need. He's gonna be gone for a long time.

He has taken a bag of money with him at the full moon. He will come home days away. You surely are not going to die. I haven't seen it since I've been a Christian. But I know the premise in the premise is the right premise without you going to see it.

Because I know it's not proper to see. But that basically what what Solomon is doing is showing his son through the lens of scripture in a proper way. You know if you mess with that kind of woman it's going to be a fatal attraction.

At full moon he's gonna come home. The camouflage of sin. What should he do. You can imagine Solomon looking at his son now if you're ever in this situation what do you do. You run you flee you go for it because you're not gonna get out alive.
