Welcome to another installment of Fighting for the Faith. My name is Chris Rosebro. I am your servant in Jesus Christ.
00:21
This is the channel that compares what people are saying in the name of God to the Word of God. Okay, so last week, at the end of the week,
00:29
I was inundated with emails and messages on social media, Chris, you've got to look at the website put out by Michael Brown and the
00:39
NAR on Prophetic Standards, and I have, and I'm going to break it down for you and kind of point out the most glaring thing in it, which pretty much is going to tell you everything you need to know.
00:54
So if you don't know what I'm talking about, let's, let's open up the desktop, open up my browser, and here is the website that was launched last week, propheticstandards .com.
01:08
And what this is all about is this is a website designed to staunch the bleeding within the charismatic movement and the
01:15
NAR and the signs and wonders folks, because all of their prophets prophesied that Trump would be reelected in November, and well, that hasn't happened.
01:28
And so let's just say the, the charismatic Pentecostal and NAR are all in, well, in shattered, shattered tatters.
01:38
You know what I'm saying? And so this is an attempt to basically say, we do have prophetic standards, but here's the thing.
01:47
The standards that they are putting forward are not only not biblical, they're contrary to scripture, and I'm going to just say this now, that this is the equivalent of a confession of faith.
02:00
If you were to think of it historically, this document has a bunch of we, we believe and we reject kind of statements in it.
02:09
So this is a confession. This is a confession of faith. This is akin to maybe the
02:15
Augsburg Confession or the Westminster Confession of Faith or the London Baptist Confession.
02:22
That's what this document is. And here's the issue, the God that they believe in with this confession of faith is clearly not the
02:32
God of the Bible. And so by rejecting Deuteronomy 18, now they have also rejected
02:40
Deuteronomy 13. And Deuteronomy 13 makes it clear, if somebody comes to us and claims to be a prophet and they're teaching a different God, having us go after another
02:51
God, that you are not to listen to them. And so the deity that they are confessing in this document is not the
02:59
God of the Bible. This is a God of their own making. And I know that that is quite the charge, but I will back it up.
03:06
So with that, I'm going to take a look at a particular statement from their statement of faith.
03:13
And this is near the very end of their statement. And this is the one that you have to focus on first, because this tells you about the
03:21
God they believe in. And it says, we reject the notion. It's a notion.
03:28
Okay. We reject the notion that a contemporary prophetic word is on the same level of inspiration or authority as scripture.
03:38
And then note what I've highlighted in pink here, or that God always speaks inerrantly through prophets today.
03:48
Note the subject, God, note the word, the verb, speaks, note the adverb, inerrantly.
04:00
In other words, the God they believe in speaks errantly, and that's not the
04:07
God of the Bible. So this is the key phrase, whatever else you read in this document, this is the one that makes it so that everybody who signs this document, you can say is an idolater and believes in a false
04:23
God. And I'll give you the biblical background for this in just a minute. So again, let me read again.
04:28
We reject the notion that a contemporary prophetic word is on the same level of inspiration as authority as scripture, or that God always speaks inerrantly through prophets today.
04:41
Since the Bible says, we only know in part and prophesy in part, which by the way, is a misappropriation of 1
04:47
Corinthians 13 .9, 1 Corinthians 13 .9 is not saying that God speaks errantly.
04:54
That's not the point of it at all. This is a complete twisting of this text.
05:00
So and they go on to say, it is the written word alone that can lay claim to being, quote, the word of God.
05:09
Prophecies at best are a word from the Lord to be tested by the word of God.
05:17
There is no difference between the word of God or a word from the Lord. God never lies and God cannot, nor will he ever speak errantly.
05:30
So let's take a look at some biblical texts along these lines. Now, if you remember a few months back,
05:36
I did an episode of Fighting for the Faith. We'll put a, let's see, we'll put a link to it over here.
05:42
We talked about how charismatics were justifying blasphemy. And so you'll note, one of the 10 commandments is this,
05:50
Exodus 20 verse 7, you shall not take the name of Yahweh your God in vain for Yahweh will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.
05:59
And the Hebrew word, shah, for vain, it literally means falsehood or vanity.
06:08
You shall not carry God's name into or to falsehood. That's what that Hebrew text means.
06:16
To say that God can speak errantly is to say that God can speak falsehood, that God can deceive, that God can lie.
06:28
And yet scripture is so clear that that is not the case at all. So we're going to look at both the
06:34
Old and the New Testament here to show that this is a consistent thing regarding the nature of God.
06:41
Numbers chapter 23 verse 19 says this, God is not a man that he should lie or a son of man that he should change his mind.
06:51
Has he said and will he not do it or has he spoken and he will not fulfill it?
06:59
The answer is he always fulfills what he says he's going to do and he would never say something and not do it because why?
07:07
God is not a man that he should lie. First Samuel 15, 29 says this, also, and also the glory of Israel will not lie or have regret for he is not a man that he should have regret.
07:25
And so to say that God can speak errantly is to say that God can lie and that God can have regret.
07:31
Oops, I guess I got that wrong. That doesn't make any sense at all. And then of course we know that God doesn't change either.
07:40
Malachi 3, 6 says, I, Yahweh, I do not change, therefore you, oh, children of Jacob, are not consumed.
07:46
And so the fact that God doesn't change means that the fact that he cannot lie or speak errantly and that's stated in the
07:54
Old Testament is true also for us in the time of the New Testament as well. In fact, we have clear texts along those lines,
08:01
Titus chapter one, Paul writes, Paul, a servant of God and apostle of Jesus Christ for the sake of the faith of God's elect and their knowledge of what?
08:10
The truth. You see, God traffics in truth, not lies or errors, which accords with godliness in hope of eternal life, which
08:19
God who never lies. So you'll note both the Old and the
08:24
New Testament agree, God never lies. He promised before the ages began and at the proper time he manifested in his word through the preaching with which
08:35
I have been entrusted by the command of our savior. Hebrews 16, sorry,
08:41
Hebrews 6 says it this way, for people swear by something greater than themselves and in all their disputes, an oath is final for confirmation.
08:50
So when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise, the unchangeable character of his purpose, he guaranteed it with an oath so that by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible, it is impossible for God to lie.
09:09
We who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope that is set before us.
09:16
And then of course, James 1, 17 says, every good gift and every perfect gift is from above coming down from the father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.
09:31
So in their statement, we reject the notion that God always speaks inerrantly through prophets today.
09:39
They are affirming that God speaks errantly, that God lies, that God has regrets.
09:48
And even worse than that, in Isaiah chapter 55, note what God says here regarding the word that he sends out.
09:55
Isaiah 55, 10 says, for as the rain and the snow come down from heaven and do not return there but water the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth.
10:11
It shall not return to me empty. But it shall accomplish that which
10:17
I purpose and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it. So when
10:23
God sends out his word, it will always accomplish the thing for which he sent it. Always. Always.
10:30
God doesn't lie. God doesn't deceive. God doesn't speak errantly. And so again, these people are saying that they reject the notion that God speaks inerrantly through prophets today.
10:45
That means that God lies. And that means the God they believe in isn't the God of the
10:50
Bible. And there are two passages of scripture that bear this out very clearly as it relates to prophets.
10:56
And we're going to note the biblical standards, not ones I've made up, but the biblical standards for testing whether or not somebody is a true or a false prophet.
11:05
And here's what it says in Deuteronomy 18, Yahweh your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you from your brothers.
11:14
It is to him you shall listen just as you desired of Yahweh your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly.
11:20
When you said, let me not hear again the voice of Yahweh, my God, or see this great fire anymore lest I die.
11:26
And Yahweh said to me, they're right in what they have spoken. I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers, and I will put my words in his mouth and he shall speak to them all that I command him.
11:36
This is a prophecy regarding Christ. And whoever will not listen to my words that he shall speak in my name,
11:42
I myself will require it of him. But the prophet who presumes to speak a word in my name that I have not commanded him to speak or who speaks in the name of other gods, and this is going to come into play here in a minute, or speaks in the name of other gods, that prophet shall die.
12:00
So if you say in your heart, how may we know the word that Yahweh has not spoken? Because God never lies.
12:07
He never speaks errantly. He never has regret. His word always accomplishes that for which he sends it.
12:13
And it is a breaking of the commandment to not take God's name in vain, to speak lies in his name and attribute them to him.
12:20
In fact, it is blasphemy to attribute to God that he speaks errantly.
12:26
And that's exactly what the prophetic standards document does. It claims that God speaks errantly.
12:32
So, you know, so again, the standard is, but the prophet who presumes to speak a word in my name that I have not commanded him to speak, who speaks in the name of other gods, that prophet shall die.
12:43
So if you say in your heart, how may we know the word that Yahweh has not spoken? Real simple.
12:49
When a prophet speaks in the name of Yahweh, if the word does not come to pass or come true, that is a word that Yahweh has not spoken.
12:56
The prophet has spoken it presumptuously. You need not be afraid of him. In other words, God isn't backing that fellow up.
13:03
And what are they to do in the theocracy of Israel? Well, that prophet shall surely die.
13:11
Now, Deuteronomy 13 now again is totally in play. Deuteronomy 13, if a prophet or a dreamer of dreams arises among you and gives you a sign or a wonder and the sign or wonder comes to pass.
13:25
And if he says, let us go after other gods that which you have not known and let us serve them, then you shall not listen to the words of that prophet or that dreamer of dreams.
13:34
For Yahweh, your God, is testing you to know whether you love the Lord, your God, with all your heart and with all your soul.
13:41
You shall walk after Yahweh, your God, and fear him and keep his commandments and obey his voice.
13:47
His voice is clear. If somebody's prophesied something and it doesn't come true, that's a false prophet. If somebody prophesies and it comes true and they say, let's chase after other gods, you are to not to listen to them.
13:59
You are to listen to the voice of God found in the scriptures. And then, so if they said, you shall walk after Yahweh, your
14:06
God, and fear him, keep his commandments and obey his voice, and you shall serve him and hold fast to him.
14:11
But that prophet or that dreamer of dreams shall be put to death because he has taught rebellion against Yahweh, your
14:17
God. So, let's kind of lay this out here. The God they are confessing in this statement, this confession of faith, can speak errantly.
14:31
He can lie. He can deceive. He can get it wrong and have regret and his word does not accomplish that for which he sends it.
14:42
That's not the God of the Bible. That's a different God.
14:47
And so, God has told us in his written word, when somebody tells you to go after other gods, you're not to listen to them.
14:56
So, every single person who has signed this statement of faith, they have done you a favor.
15:04
They have told you that they are idolaters and they worship a different God and believe in a different God than the
15:12
God of the Bible. They are believing in a God of their own making and the prophetic standards that they have created are not the biblical standards.
15:21
You are not to listen to them. So, everybody who signs this, you mark them and avoid them and never again listen to them because they are worshiping a false
15:33
God. And unless they repent of the false God they believe in, you are to absolutely treat them as if they are not believers, but wolves, the wolves that they are sent by the devil to deceive us.
15:46
That's really what it comes down to. So, note then, they say, well, finally, we believe in holding prophets accountable for their words in accordance with the scriptures and we do not believe that a sincere prophet who delivers an inaccurate message is therefore a false prophet.
16:03
Now, I want to point this out. Oh, this sounds so pious, right? Well, if they're a sincere prophet, note, we don't have the ability to look into somebody's heart.
16:11
I cannot look into somebody's heart. I can only tell you what they do and what they say. And the tests that we are given in scripture do not require us to determine whether or not somebody was sincere.
16:24
That's a subjective standard and only God can tell whether or not they were sincere or not. But the objective standards given in scripture give me the ability to judge them by their doctrine and whether or not they are giving true prophecies.
16:38
This standard stands in complete defiance and rebellion of the biblical standards for prophets and as a result of it gives us no way of ever determining whether anybody is truly a false prophet.
16:54
Therefore, it has to be rejected. Not only are they teaching a false god, their standard isn't a biblical standard and their standard is mired in complete subjectivity and leaves people without the ability to identify who true false prophets are.
17:08
In other words, the people who put this standard together by putting it together have shown you that they are false prophets.
17:14
For we believe in holding prophets accountable, but in accordance with the scripture, we do not believe in a sincere prophet who delivers an inaccurate message is therefore a false prophet.
17:26
Deuteronomy begs to differ. Instead, as Jesus explained, the Old Testament emphasized false prophets are wolves in sheep's clothing.
17:33
In contrast, true believers might speak inaccurately. No, they won't. Not if they're speaking by the word of God and if they're speaking
17:40
God's words because God never speaks errantly.
17:46
He never lies. His word always accomplishes that for which he sends it. So, to kind of sum it up then, the
17:54
God they believe in speaks errantly. This is not the God of the Bible. This is a deity that they've invented.
17:59
The one true God never lies. The words of the one true God never return to him empty and they always accomplish that for which he sent it.
18:07
So, if you want to understand what to think about this prophetic standards document, it's a confession of faith and everybody who signs it believes in a different God than the biblical
18:18
God. It's really that simple. And I know that some people are going to just really be upset with me.
18:24
Show me in scripture where God lies. Show me one text. Show me one text where God speaks errantly.
18:33
He never does. And so, what these people are doing are basically creating a standard that makes it impossible to identify anybody as a false prophet and the deity they believe in, that ain't the
18:47
God of the Bible at all. And so, let's take a look at some of the people who've signed the document and now you can with certainty that you can just avoid them altogether.
18:58
Dr. Michael Brown. He believes in a different God than the God of the Bible. I found it really fascinating.
19:04
James Gall is in here. But there was another name, Dr. Wayne Grudem. Mark Driscoll's name is in the list.
19:13
Patricia King. Jennifer LeClair. Everybody who signs this document, this is their confession of faith.
19:21
This is the deity that they believe in and it's not the God of the Bible. So, everybody who signs this,
19:28
Chris Vallotton, that would mean all of Bethel is out, which doesn't surprise me at all. Every single person who signs this, they have confessed to believing in a
19:38
God that is not the God of scripture. I know it seems simplistic, but it really is that simple because the
19:45
God they believe in speaks errantly. The God of the scriptures never does.
19:52
So, hopefully you found this helpful. All the information on how you can share the video is down below in the description.
19:58
And until next time, may God richly bless you in the grace and mercy won by Jesus Christ is vicarious death on the cross for all of your sins.
