Hey guys, Colin here, and welcome back to the channel where we bring you Christian commentary about the things that matter.
00:05
In today's video, we're going to be taking a look at a tweet from Andy Stanley. But before we begin, as always, let me establish this is not meant as a sinful attack, but rather as a biblical critique.
00:17
Now, for those of you who do not know, Andy Stanley is the son of famous minister Charles Stanley, and he is the current pastor of North Point Community Church in Atlanta, Georgia.
00:27
This is the very same pastor who famously suggested that Christians need to, quote, unhitch themselves from the
00:33
Old Testament, which is, of course, absolutely ridiculous. The Old Testament is God's perfect word, and to unhitch from any portion of God's word is both foolish and blasphemous.
00:44
But in any case, that's not the topic of today's video. Today, we are going to look at a tweet from Virgil Walker and the following response from Andy Stanley.
00:53
Virgil Walker is someone I'm very impressed with personally. He is the executive director of operations at G3 Ministries, which is a
01:00
Reformed Baptist ministry that we highly recommend here on the channel. Link in description. Let's pray that they would continue their great work as unto the
01:08
Lord. In any case, Virgil Walker tweeted the following statement, quote, If your pastor is a woman, she is not a pastor.
01:15
She is a feminist who ignores Scripture, end quote. Of course, Andy Stanley's super solid biblical critique of this statement from Virgil was the following, quote, rude and incorrect, end quote.
01:27
So let's simply ask the question in today's video, was Virgil Walker's statement rude and incorrect?
01:32
Let's start with the question of truth. Was his statement incorrect? No. Virgil's statement was completely correct and can be thoroughly supported by the teaching of Scripture all over the place.
01:43
His first statement was, quote, If your pastor is a woman, she is not a pastor. This is, of course, true.
01:49
1 Timothy 2 .12 talks about church leadership and explicitly says, quote, I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man.
01:59
Clear as day. Women are absolutely banned from any pastoral leadership in the church with no apology made here.
02:06
Feel free to contradict that whenever you become smarter, wiser, and more righteous than the
02:11
God of the universe. And humbly, I just want to remind you that that will never happen. So the answer becomes very clear.
02:17
The question really comes down to this. What is the definition of a pastor? Well, since a pastor is a church leader, the one who created and founded the church and everyone in it, the
02:28
Lord, gets to define the term. 1 Timothy 3 .2 says, quote, Therefore, an overseer must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, end quote.
02:38
So it is clear that a pastor by definition is a heterosexual man who is qualified for ministry, period.
02:46
1 Timothy 3 .4 -5 says, quote, He must manage his own household well, with all dignity, keeping his children submissive.
02:54
For if someone does not know how to manage his household, how will he care for God's church?
03:00
End quote. Read Ephesians chapter 5. Biblically speaking, the man is the head of the household. That's clear.
03:06
So this does not mean parent or guardian of a child or unspecified gendered individual.
03:13
No, quite simply, the passage says a pastor, according to the text of scripture, is a man who is the head of his household.
03:20
And of course, he must fit all of the other ministerial qualifications. By definition, though, a pastor is a man, just as by definition, the color red is not the color blue.
03:30
Therefore, as Virgil Walker rightly says, a woman is not a pastor. It's that simple.
03:36
He's not incorrect at all. And then Virgil says that female pastors are, quote, feminists who ignore the scriptures.
03:43
This is, again, completely correct. A modern feminist is one who believes that women and men are effectively interchangeable, so that telling a woman she cannot do some particular thing is sexist and wrong.
03:55
Female pastors fit very neatly into this category. They exalt the freedom of the feminine gender above the standard of God's word.
04:04
They ignore the scriptures that I quoted for you today, or they reinterpret them to agree with their feminist agenda.
04:10
They are, by Biblical definition, feminists who ignore the scriptures. Virgil Walker is, again, completely correct.
04:17
He hit it out of the park. It's a home run. And Andy Stanley's claim that he's incorrect should be met with only resistance from Biblical Christians, because Andy Stanley is dead wrong.
04:27
But what about Andy's second claim, the claim that Virgil was being rude in what he said?
04:33
Well, in Matthew 4 -4, Jesus says this, quote, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God, end quote.
04:42
The Word of God, you see, is what we live by, spiritually speaking. So again, we have to ask, by what standard is someone called rude?
04:50
If being rude is an ethical category of speech, then the Bible, being the Christian's ethical standard, should get to define it, right?
04:58
So was Paul being rude in Scripture when he said that he would not let a woman be a teacher or leader in the church?
05:04
Was Paul rude in Scripture when he said that a pastor is supposed to be a biological man at the head of his household?
05:11
Of course not. So given the fact that Virgil Walker simply mirrored the Bible's statements about women who claim to be pastors, he's not being rude at all.
05:19
He's just being Biblical. So by the Biblical standard, Virgil was not being rude and he was not being incorrect.
05:25
We've proven that definitively. So the important question becomes, how can Andy Stanley call him rude and call him incorrect in the first place?
05:34
Well, quite simply, it's because Andy has been using a standard that does not come from the
05:40
Scriptures, because the standard of Scripture agrees with Virgil. This is the source of most of the woes we see today in Christianity.
05:47
We say that we believe the Bible and stand on it as our foundation, but the moment anyone like Virgil Walker actually quotes the
05:54
Bible and stands on it, the Big Eva types like Andy Stanley accuse him of being a big meany head.
06:01
How dare you say what the Bible says? Don't you know you're hurting a woman's feelings? How dare you? You see, this is the problem.
06:08
We have professing Christians who want to be Biblically loving in the way they act and in the way they speak.
06:14
They want to stick to the Word. But then you have other professing Christians like Andy Stanley who want to create their own standard of love and civility and correctness which is separate from Scripture.
06:25
And then they use this unbiblical standard to judge good men and women of God who are simply standing on God's Word.
06:33
And that is, of course, why Andy Stanley can tell us to unhitch from the majority of God's Word, because this too is letting the opinion of man supersede the
06:42
Scriptures and decide which parts we should follow and which parts we shouldn't. The point here is this.
06:48
As Christians, we ought to be pious. We ought to be civil. We ought to be loving. But the
06:53
Bible does not tell us to do these things and then say, well, do them in whatever way you see fit.
06:58
No, instead, we ought to find our standard for piety, for love, for civility, and for everything else, really, in the
07:06
Scriptures. Only then can we be assured that our beliefs and practices are truly
07:11
Biblical, truly good. Anything else is just us creating a different standard and using it to manipulate other
07:18
Christians because we get offended when they speak Biblical truth. And that's exactly what happened with Andy Stanley here.
07:24
So please, Christians, let's get our worldview from Scripture and not from Andy Stanley's feelings, or from our feelings, or from anyone else's, for that matter.
07:33
That is idolatry. That is exalting man above God's Word. That is making ourselves the standard of truth.
07:40
Instead, let us make Scripture our sole standard, for, The Word of God is living and active, sharper than any two -edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart, end quote.
07:57
Hebrews 4 .12. And please know this, I do not offer any of this correction from a high and mighty position.
08:02
I am nothing but a wretched sinner saved by the grace of Jesus Christ. So let's pray for Andy Stanley that he would stop rebuking people for being
08:11
Biblical, and that by God's grace he would turn to the truth of God's Word. Thank you so much for watching that video.
