- 00:09
- If you have your Bibles, please turn with me to Hebrews chapter 1. We're going to be looking at verses 3 and 4.
- 00:21
- Hebrews chapter 1, verses 3 and 4. Father, we come to you in the name of Christ, and again we give thanks for your spirit and all that you have done for us through Christ.
- 00:43
- Lord, I pray again as always that I've done my due diligence, and Lord, I pray that as I'm speaking, you through your spirit will empower me to teach your people.
- 01:01
- I so need your spirit, Lord, to fulfill this task you have given me, not only to shepherd the flock, but also to present to them your word.
- 01:15
- But to do it in such a way, to wield it in such a way that they will leave here today fully understanding this portion of Scripture and be filled on your word.
- 01:33
- Lord, empower me to feed your people, I pray in Jesus' name.
- 01:39
- Amen. Long ago, and at many times, and in many ways,
- 01:51
- God spoke to our fathers by the prophets. But in these last days, he has spoken to us by his
- 01:59
- Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, whom also he created the world.
- 02:06
- He is the radiance of the glory of God, the exact imprint of his nature.
- 02:13
- And he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the majesty on high, having become much more superior to angels, as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs.
- 02:35
- For to which of the angels did God ever say, You are my Son, today
- 02:41
- I have begotten you. Or again, I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son.
- 02:50
- And again, when he brings his firstborn into the world, he says, Let all
- 02:55
- God's angels worship him. Of the angels, he says, he makes his angels' winds and his ministers a flame of fire.
- 03:07
- But of the Son, he says, Your throne, O God, is forever and ever.
- 03:15
- And the scepter of righteousness is the scepter of your kingdom. You have loved righteousness and have hated wickedness.
- 03:24
- Therefore, God, your God has anointed you with the oil of gladness beyond your companions.
- 03:33
- And you, Lord, laid the foundation of the earth in the beginning, and the heavens are the work of your hands.
- 03:41
- They will perish, but you will remain. They will wear out like a garment, like a robe.
- 03:48
- You will row them up like a garment. They will be changed. But you are the same, and your years will have no end.
- 04:01
- And to which of the angels did he ever say, Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.
- 04:13
- Are they not all ministering spirits sent out to serve for the sake of those who are to inherit salvation?
- 04:27
- Our theme has been the supremacy of God's Son, Jesus Christ. The supremacy of Jesus Christ.
- 04:36
- He is greater. He is better than everything else. That is the theme that we've been walking through through this prologue.
- 04:47
- And the proposition is this. Jesus is greater than everything because he is the substance of every shadow.
- 04:54
- Of every shadow that the Bible gives us, he is the substance. They point to him.
- 05:01
- If the shadow could speak, if the rock that was struck, that poured out water could speak, it would say,
- 05:09
- Stop staring at me. Look at him. To Jesus, he is the substance that was a shadow.
- 05:27
- How should Jesus being the substance of every shadow change your life?
- 05:33
- That's the question. How should him being the substance of every shadow change your life?
- 05:40
- It does so by what we're doing here today, by opening the book, by revealing to one another the
- 05:48
- Old Testament. We're here because it's clear that we are to sit under the apostles teaching.
- 05:56
- So as we expositionally walk through the New Testament, what the apostles are doing, they're shedding light on the shadows to show the substance.
- 06:07
- The greater than, the better than. And it changes our life because now whenever we have this understanding and we're walking through the scriptures, we can see that he was the offspring of the woman that crushed the head of the serpent.
- 06:22
- That he is the offspring of Abraham. That he is the offspring of Judah to whom all the obedience of the people belongs to.
- 06:31
- That he is the offspring of David who sits on his throne forever. So when we look back at and when we read from Genesis all the way through the
- 06:42
- Old Testament, because of this knowledge that the New Testament gives us, we can see the fulfillment.
- 06:49
- We can see the apostles teaching. So whenever we do teach through Genesis and we see that Jacob had a dream and that the ladder that was on the earth and that it reached heavens and angels were able to ascend and descend upon it, well when we go to John chapter, the gospel of John chapter 1 tells us that that ladder was
- 07:11
- Jesus Christ. He is who angels ascend and descend upon. That ladder was a shadow and Jesus is the substance.
- 07:20
- And so it gives us a greater knowledge as we walk through this book and it feeds us and it shows that the prophecies that are given in the
- 07:31
- New Testament of the fulfillment of all things to come, that this world will be
- 07:37
- Christianized, that this world will soon be under the feet of Christ, that we have hope even in dark times like we're in right now.
- 07:50
- Now to our text, Hebrews 1 verses 3 and 4.
- 07:58
- Read with me. He, being Jesus, is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature.
- 08:16
- And he upholds the universe by the word of his power.
- 08:22
- After making purifications for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the majesty on high, having become as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs.
- 08:47
- In our outline, we will see the preeminence of Jesus Christ over the angels.
- 08:57
- Jesus is preeminent. He is, again, he's greater.
- 09:03
- He goes before, he is above all things. Everything else is below him, even the angels.
- 09:13
- At this time, we had what was called angel worship. These Hebrews, these
- 09:20
- Jews, they worshiped angels. As many times you see where an angel would appear and these
- 09:28
- Hebrews would fall down like a dead man at their feet and worship them.
- 09:34
- And they would announce to them, do not worship me, worship God. Paul makes this clear in Galatians.
- 09:43
- Remember, he says, even if an angel brings to you another gospel contrary to the one that I preach to you, let him be accursed, cut off from Christ.
- 09:55
- Because he is a liar. Do not listen to angels above Christ, the message given to us.
- 10:09
- Jesus is preeminent. Jesus is greater than angels because, here's our outline,
- 10:16
- Jesus is greater than angels because he is God. Jesus is greater than angels because he is the creator.
- 10:24
- Jesus is greater than angels because he is the high priest. Jesus is greater than angels because he is the king.
- 10:35
- Jesus is greater than angels because he is the son.
- 10:43
- He is the son. To which of the angels could they ever say, you are my son, today
- 10:52
- I have begotten you. None of them. So the main text
- 11:00
- I just read, verses three and verses four. But we will be using all of chapter one in order to teach verses three and verses four.
- 11:15
- Now I know that through these past few weeks or however long it takes, so this is the fifth message in Hebrews and we've just now made it to verses three and four.
- 11:22
- It's because this is the last message of chapter one. The last message of chapter one.
- 11:31
- So all of chapter one will be summed up in this message as we focus on verses three and verses four.
- 11:42
- So you can say it really didn't take that long. Right? Y 'all thought it was gonna take more months to get through chapter one.
- 11:49
- Well, hallelujah. It's tricked ya. So we're gonna be looking at all of chapter one in order to teach these two verses.
- 12:03
- But before we transition into that, note this. I wrote this down.
- 12:12
- The prophets and the angels could only relate to people what they have seen and heard.
- 12:18
- Okay? The prophets, men who spoke for God and angels could only relate what they have seen and heard from God.
- 12:28
- Jesus, however, was in himself God. His message to the people was firsthand.
- 12:39
- His message was firsthand. Jesus not only spoke for God, Jesus is
- 12:46
- God. Do you see how greater his message is?
- 12:57
- I stand before you today as a messenger called out by God to proclaim to you his word.
- 13:11
- Jesus is greater. He speaks as God. I don't speak, angels don't speak, prophets don't speak as God.
- 13:20
- Jesus does. And he is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
- 13:27
- Our worship is to him. We should not worship angels, we should not worship prophets, and we should not worship pastors.
- 13:36
- He is the preeminent. Now to our first point, after that big drama theme,
- 13:48
- Jesus is greater than angels because he is God.
- 13:54
- Hebrews 1, verse 3a, he is the radiance of the glory of God, the exact imprint of his nature.
- 14:07
- The radiance of the glory of God, the exact imprint of his nature.
- 14:13
- This also could be translated as this, he is the radiance of the glory and the representation of his essence.
- 14:26
- The representation of his essence. The word nature and the word essence are synonymous.
- 14:35
- It is speaking of the being of God. We read this every Lord's Day morning in our creed, we read from the
- 14:44
- Nicene Creed. Listen to paragraph two. Paragraph two of the Nicene Creed, and in one
- 14:52
- Lord Jesus Christ, the only son of God begotten from the father before all ages,
- 15:00
- God from God, light from light, true
- 15:06
- God from true God, begotten, not made of the same essence.
- 15:14
- This is nature, nature, the same nature, the same essence as the father.
- 15:20
- They have the same nature, they have the same essence through whom all things were made.
- 15:32
- So right here where it talks about he is the exact imprint of his nature.
- 15:41
- He is the exact imprint of his essence. When you, Jesus says, if you have seen me, you have seen the father.
- 15:52
- Now, is he saying, what was he saying? Is he speaking of persons? No, he did not say if you see me as a person, you have seen the father as a person, but if you have seen me, you have seen
- 16:06
- God as in speaking of the father, as in being, nature, essence.
- 16:14
- If you have seen Jesus Christ, you have seen God. Jesus is the essence, the exact imprint of the nature of the essence of God.
- 16:35
- And let me tell you something, God did not become an angel to die for angels.
- 16:42
- He became a man to die for mankind.
- 16:48
- Jesus took on the nature of flesh in order to reconcile both man to God.
- 16:59
- So I have quite a few verses here for us to turn to and look at. Our first one will be 2
- 17:06
- Corinthians. 2 Corinthians 4.
- 17:16
- We're going to be looking at verses 3 through 6.
- 17:24
- 2 Corinthians 4, 3 through 6. It says, and even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing.
- 17:35
- In the case of the God of this world has blinded their minds of the unbelievers to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.
- 17:54
- For what we have proclaimed is not of ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord.
- 17:59
- We ourselves as your servants for Jesus's sake, for God who said, let light shine out of darkness, has shown in the hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
- 18:20
- Revelation 21. Revelation 21 verses 22 through 23.
- 18:34
- 22, 23. Speaking of Jesus, speaking of the consummation of the new heavens and the new earth, it says, and I saw no temple in the city for its temple is the
- 18:51
- Lord God, the Almighty and the Lamb. Remember, we've been talking about Jesus being the temple that the kingdom of God is the temple.
- 19:02
- Jesus is the king, he's the kingdom of God that whenever we are being, whenever someone comes to repentance in Christ, they are at it.
- 19:12
- That's why as a church, we can say that we are the temple. Jesus says, tear down this temple in three days,
- 19:20
- I will rebuild it, speaking of his own body. The church is what? The body of Christ.
- 19:28
- Revelation is saying that I saw no temple in the city for its temple was the
- 19:33
- Lord our God, the Almighty and the Lamb. And the city has no need for the sun or the moon to shine on it for its glory.
- 19:45
- I mean, for the glory of God gives us light and its lamp is the
- 19:50
- Lamb. Its lamp is the Lamb. Turn to Exodus chapter 40.
- 19:55
- Exodus chapter 40 verses 34 and 35.
- 20:13
- Then the cloud covered the ten of metons and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle.
- 20:19
- And Moses was not able to enter the ten of metons because the cloud settled on it.
- 20:30
- And the glory of the Lord filled the temple. What filled the temple?
- 20:35
- The glory of the Lord. Who is the glory of the Lord? Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ.
- 20:45
- John 1, 14. This is very familiar to us. John 1, 14. Listen to this.
- 20:51
- And the word became flesh and dwelt among us and we have seen his glory, this glory that dwelt in the temple.
- 20:59
- We have seen this glory, glory as of the only son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
- 21:10
- Colossians chapter 1, verse 15. Speaking of Jesus, he is the image.
- 21:19
- Remember the exact imprint of his nature. This is the image. He is the true image, the image of the invisible
- 21:27
- God, the firstborn of all creation. The firstborn here is speaking of the resurrection.
- 21:34
- One more. First Chronicles chapter 29.
- 21:42
- This will be the last book of Chronicles. Chapter 29, verse 11. First Chronicles 29, verse 11.
- 21:50
- It says, Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty for all that is in heaven and earth is yours.
- 22:05
- Yours is the kingdom, O Lord, and you are exalted as the head above all.
- 22:14
- Who is the head? Who is the head of the church? Jesus Christ.
- 22:20
- All these things are the shadows pointing to the substance. Jesus Christ is the head.
- 22:27
- Jesus Christ is the glory that was in the temple, the glory that was in the tent, the tabernacle.
- 22:34
- It was him and that glory became flesh and it dwelt among us.
- 22:44
- I think sometimes as Christians, we can just let this truth be so ingrained into us that it absolutely does nothing for us.
- 22:56
- When this should impact your every breath. It should impact your every breath.
- 23:07
- Hebrews 8, I mean, Hebrews 1, verse 8a. But of the
- 23:14
- Son, he says, Your throne. This is God. This is God the
- 23:20
- Father speaking about God the Son. But of the Son, he says, Your throne,
- 23:25
- O God. God the Father calling God the Son. Your throne, O God, is forever and ever.
- 23:33
- And the scepter of uprightness is the scepter of your kingdom.
- 23:41
- How long does this kingdom last? A thousand years? No, forever.
- 23:47
- Your throne, O God, speaking of Jesus, is forever and ever.
- 23:53
- It has no end. It has no end. As we transition to our next point, notice these verses are more concerned with who the
- 24:03
- Son is than what the Son is in terms of its nature and its essence.
- 24:10
- The Son is God. Jesus said, If you've seen me, you have seen the
- 24:17
- Father. You have seen God. You have seen him. Point number two,
- 24:23
- Jesus is greater than angels because he is the creator. Hebrews 1, 3b.
- 24:31
- We'll start at the beginning of verse three, of course. He is the radiance and the glory of God, the exact imprint of his nature right here.
- 24:39
- And he upholds the universe by the word of his power. So if you look back at verse two of Hebrews, verse two, it says,
- 24:49
- But in these last days, he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom he also created the world.
- 25:00
- So not only did he create the world, but he upholds the world, the universe by the word of his power.
- 25:11
- Again, it points us back to the Gospel of John. The Gospel of John. Chapter one, verse one.
- 25:19
- In the beginning was the word. We went through this. In the beginning was the word and the word was with God.
- 25:24
- This is Logos Prostanteon. That they were face to face, that they were
- 25:30
- God, the Father, God, the Son, face to face. Prostanteon. Logos, the word.
- 25:37
- Prostant was with Theon, God. Logos was with Theon.
- 25:43
- Logos Prostanteon. The Greek can be a little tricky for me. And it says,
- 25:49
- He was in the beginning with God. And he was. And all things that were made were made through him.
- 25:56
- And without him was not anything made. And in him was life. And that life was the light of man. And that light shines in darkness.
- 26:02
- And darkness has not overcome it. And it's pointing back to Genesis chapter one.
- 26:08
- Where God hovered. In the beginning was God created the heavens and the earth.
- 26:15
- The earth was swum, was in void. Darkness hovered over. And the darkness was over the face of the earth. And God's spirit hovered over the waters.
- 26:22
- And God spoke, let there be light. The announcement of who Jesus is.
- 26:28
- The announcement of his son. The light, the glory of God. Through whom he created the world.
- 26:39
- So as creator, Jesus as creator. He speaks as a what?
- 26:44
- As a prophet. Jesus as creator. He speaks as a prophet.
- 26:50
- And all that he spoke comes to pass. Everything that Jesus spoke has come to pass.
- 26:58
- So we see that in creation. We see that in his existence. So we have to believe that in our future.
- 27:07
- Everything that he spoke has come to pass. Or is coming to pass. He speaks as a prophet.
- 27:13
- And his prophecies are true. That's why Jesus is the greater prophet. He is the greater prophet.
- 27:25
- Turn to your Bibles, if you will, to Psalm 102. Psalm 102.
- 27:34
- This is going to be pointing us to the previous point. But carrying us to the point that we're in.
- 27:42
- So if you look at Psalm 102, verse 1. It says, hear my prayer,
- 27:48
- O Lord. So this is capital L -O -R -D. This is Yahweh.
- 27:53
- Hear my prayer, Yahweh. Who's the writer speaking to?
- 28:01
- We're Baptist, you can speak. Who's the writer speaking to? Yahweh.
- 28:08
- Hear my prayer, O Yahweh. All right, now if you turn.
- 28:15
- Beginning in verses 25. This is him speaking to Yahweh.
- 28:22
- Of old, you, speaking to Yahweh, laid the foundations of the earth.
- 28:28
- The heavens are the work of your hands. They will perish, but you will remain.
- 28:34
- They will wear out like a garment. And you will change them like a robe.
- 28:41
- And they will pass away. Now we come down to our text in Hebrews 1, verse 10.
- 28:54
- This is Yahweh, the father Yahweh, speaking of the son.
- 29:02
- And the father says, and you, Lord. This is
- 29:07
- Adonai. This is Kyrios, Kyrios. So when the Greek Septuagint translates to Hebrew, it's
- 29:14
- Kyrios. You, O Lord. This is the father speaking of Jesus.
- 29:22
- He says, and you, Lord, lay the foundations of the earth. In the beginning, in the beginning.
- 29:29
- And the heavens are the work of your hands. They will perish, but you will remain. They will wear out like a garment.
- 29:36
- But like a robe, you will roll them up. And like a garment, they will be changed.
- 29:43
- So who is the writer in Psalm speaking to? Yahweh.
- 29:50
- And the father is pointing it to being Jesus. The Jehovah's Witnesses hate this verse, this contrast.
- 29:58
- When you point this out to them. This is one of the ones that I use to stump them to show that Jesus is
- 30:04
- Yahweh. In transitioning, the father is speaking this of his son.
- 30:14
- The father is not speaking this of angels. This is not of angels.
- 30:21
- The writer is saying, stop worshiping angels. Start worshiping the son.
- 30:29
- Start worshiping the son. Point number three, Jesus is greater than angels because he is the high priest.
- 30:38
- Hebrews 1, again, verse three, all the way through. He is the radiance and the glory of God, the exact imprint of his nature.
- 30:48
- He opposed the universe by the word of his power. And after making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the majesty on high.
- 30:59
- One key point to note is this, is that one of the key points of the gospel is the fact that Jesus was our sacrifice.
- 31:11
- Last week we spoke about that, correct? That's the gospel. John the
- 31:16
- Baptist had Pharisees around him asking him, are you the Christ?
- 31:22
- Are you the Messiah? Are you him? He said, no, I'm not him. I'm not even worthy to tie his shoes or to hold his sandals.
- 31:32
- But he sees Jesus coming in the distance and he sees him and he says, behold the lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.
- 31:43
- John the Baptist, who was just asked, are you him? Are you the Messiah?
- 31:49
- And he sees the Messiah coming. He says, behold the lamb who takes away the sins of the world.
- 31:57
- And this is speaking of Passover. And we spoke about this before. You have the
- 32:02
- Passover comes once a year. So whenever this past Easter, we celebrate
- 32:10
- Good Friday. And a lot of people are, why do you celebrate Good Friday? Jesus was crucified.
- 32:19
- He was the lamb slaughtered. So on Passover, the
- 32:24
- Jews would sacrifice a lamb. They would put the blood on the doorpost and on the mantle. And it was to represent what took place in Egypt as the angel of death comes through.
- 32:36
- And if the blood of the lamb was over the door, they would pass through. They wouldn't kill the firstborn male of that house.
- 32:45
- Because of what took place in Egypt during the Jews enslavement.
- 32:52
- They celebrate this every year. And John sees
- 32:59
- Jesus and he sees the ending of the Passover. He says, it's him.
- 33:06
- That's him. That's the guy. He's the one. It's him.
- 33:12
- That's the lamb of God. And he points to him as the sacrifice.
- 33:18
- And the gospel is very clear that in order for the death angel to pass us by, we have to have the blood of the lamb.
- 33:29
- Not on our doorpost or the mantle, but on us. We have to be covered in the righteousness of Christ.
- 33:37
- And then it's through the shed blood of Jesus Christ. And our response is repentance and faith in him.
- 33:46
- It was one of the first importance that we looked at last week, that Christ died for our sins.
- 33:54
- It was the sacrifice. This verse, as well as the whole book of Hebrews, teaches that not only was
- 34:02
- Jesus the sacrifice, but that he was the high priest that made the sacrifice.
- 34:08
- He laid down his own life. He is the high priest. But notice what it says.
- 34:19
- In our verse, it says, after making purification for sins, how does he make purification for sins?
- 34:29
- There is blood. To the atoning death. They're being crucified on the cross.
- 34:36
- After doing that, what does he do? He sits down at the right hand of the majesty on high.
- 34:43
- There were no seats. The Bible's clear as you're reading this, as you're studying it, and as you're looking through all the commentary, it's clear that in the temple area where the sacrifice was made, there was no seats for the priest to sit down.
- 35:01
- Why? Because their work was never over. The work of the priest was never over.
- 35:07
- It continues and continue and continue until Jesus Christ came and he made the once and for all sacrifice.
- 35:15
- And after he makes the sacrifice, he sits down. Why? Because it's over. It's finished.
- 35:21
- On the cross, he said it is finished. He sat down at the right hand of the majesty on high after making purification for sins, meaning that there's no more need for sacrifice.
- 35:36
- And that's the argument of the writer of Hebrews who I believe to be Paul is making. Stop going to temple.
- 35:44
- Stop sacrificing. Jesus is the high priest and he made the sacrifice and he sat down at the right hand of the majesty on high.
- 36:02
- Look with me at our next point. It's still the same verse, verse three.
- 36:07
- Jesus is greater than angels because he is the king. He is the radiance and the glory of God, the exact imprint of his nature.
- 36:18
- And he opposed the universe by the word of his power. And after making purifications for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the majesty, right here, the majesty on high.
- 36:31
- So here where it says the majesty at the right hand of the majesty on high, this was a place of royalty, a place of royalty.
- 36:40
- Daniel chapter seven, right? We see when Christ was crucified, he came back and he's speaking to his disciples and he tells them that they're going to receive power.
- 36:54
- And once they receive power, they will be his witnesses in Judea, Jerusalem, and all the nations.
- 36:59
- And it says that he was lifted up and a cloud took him.
- 37:06
- And then you read in Daniel chapter seven that Daniel was seeing a vision of the ancient of days.
- 37:13
- And that the son of man appeared before the ancient of days in a cloud. And he was given a kingdom.
- 37:22
- He was given a kingdom. So again, Hebrews chapter one, verses eight and nine.
- 37:30
- But of the son, he says, your throne, oh God. Remember, we looked at this last time pointing the fact that he is
- 37:36
- God. He says, your throne, oh God, is forever and ever. And the scepter of the uprightness is a scepter of your kingdom.
- 37:45
- Verse nine, you have loved righteousness and you have hated wickedness. Therefore, since this has happened, therefore,
- 37:54
- God, your God has anointed you with the oil of gladness beyond your companions.
- 38:00
- So this was his inauguration, him being inaugurated as king.
- 38:07
- Remember King David, whenever David was anointed king, what did they do? They anointed him with oil.
- 38:15
- So right here, we see that whenever the ancient of days, I mean, the son of man appears for the ancient of days, he was given a kingdom.
- 38:24
- This is when the inauguration would have taken place. He was anointed with the oil of gladness.
- 38:32
- And we know that he sits down at the right hand of the father. I think it was, was it last week that I pointed out?
- 38:39
- What is he doing at the right hand of the father? He's ruling and reigning. He's making intercession and prayer for those that draw near to him by faith.
- 38:48
- He's putting all enemies under his feet. He's on the throne of David.
- 38:56
- He is king, he's ruling and reigning. So Jesus is greater than angels because he is king.
- 39:04
- As high priest, he sat down, his atoning work was finished. And as king, he was given a kingdom.
- 39:15
- Hebrews 1 .13. And to which of the angels has he ever said, sit at my right hand until I make your enemy a footstool for your feet.
- 39:29
- Here, he's pointing back to Psalm 110 .1. The Lord said to my
- 39:37
- Lord, sit at my right hand. Yahweh said to Yahweh, sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.
- 39:45
- This is speaking of Jesus being the king of kings and the Lord of lords.
- 39:51
- This is not a position of angels. This is not a position of angels.
- 39:58
- Look at Revelation 19. Revelation 19, verse 11 through 16.
- 40:18
- Listen to this description of Jesus. 11, 19, 11 through 16.
- 40:26
- Then I saw heaven open and behold, a white horse.
- 40:32
- And the rider sitting on it is called Faithful and True. And in righteousness, he judges and makes war.
- 40:42
- His eyes are like a flame of fire and on his head are many diadems.
- 40:48
- And in his hand, a name is written that no one knows but himself.
- 40:57
- His clothes and a robe dipped in blood. And the name by which he is called is the
- 41:05
- Word of God. Remember, he speaks for God. And the armies of heaven arrayed in a fine linen and white pearl are following him on white horses.
- 41:18
- For from his mouth comes a sharp sword with which he strikes down the nations.
- 41:25
- And he rules them with a rod of iron. He would tread them, he would tread the winepress of fury of the wrath of God, the
- 41:37
- Almighty. And on his robe and on his thigh, he has the name written,
- 41:46
- King of Kings. And Lord of Lords.
- 41:53
- He is preeminent over all kings of the earth. He is preeminent over all lords of the earth.
- 42:01
- He is greater than all kings. He is greater than all lords. Because as Psalm 2 tells us, it says,
- 42:11
- Oh, kings, oh, rulers, kiss the sun. Kiss the sun.
- 42:21
- As we transition, we have to understand that Jesus is king right now.
- 42:28
- King of kings right now. Point number five, this will be our last point.
- 42:37
- Jesus is greater than angels because he is the son. Hebrews 1, 4.
- 42:45
- Having become much more superior to angels as the name he has inherited it is more excellent than theirs.
- 42:55
- What is the name? Son, he has inherited.
- 43:02
- We are revealed that he is the son. This is a direct quotation from Psalm 2, 7.
- 43:11
- I'll turn there real quick. If you want to, you can. Psalm 2, 7. I will declare, now
- 43:18
- I will tell of the decree. The Lord said to me, you are my son.
- 43:25
- Today I have begotten you. So begotten you, remember speaking of his resurrection.
- 43:33
- So speaking of Jesus, he says, you are my son. Today I have begotten you.
- 43:41
- Look at verse six of Hebrews. And to which, and again, when he brings his firstborn into the world, he says, let all
- 43:52
- God's angels worship him. So we have the Hebrews worshiping angels and God declaring that angels are to worship him.
- 44:05
- I've said this many times preaching downtown. Speaking of Isaiah chapter six, you have God, you have
- 44:11
- Isaiah having some kind of vision, whether he's in the temple, it doesn't say whether he's having a vision, but he sees the
- 44:19
- Lord sitting high upon the throne and above him were seraphims. And it says each of these angels had six wings.
- 44:26
- It says with two wings, they cover their face. They're hiding from each other. With two wings, they cover their feet.
- 44:33
- And with two wings, they're flying. And it says that one calls to another and says, holy, holy, holy is the
- 44:39
- Lord of the earth. His glory is the Lord of something.
- 44:44
- His glory fills the earth. His glory fills the earth. But anyways, like it has these angels who are hiding from each other and they're reminding you like, it gives you like this vision of them kind of looking at the cracks of their wings to one another and saying, he's holy.
- 45:02
- This God who sits on the throne is holy. And in John chapter 12, it makes known that this
- 45:09
- God who's on the throne in Isaiah chapter six is Jesus Christ. But I say this, that if one of these seraphims, if one of these six -winged angelic beings was to appear in this room right now, you out of pure ignorance would fall down like a dead man and worship it like the
- 45:30
- Hebrews did then. It would be so terrifying in our sight.
- 45:36
- We have never seen anything like this. We would fall down as if we were dead, prostrated on the ground, and worship this thing.
- 45:45
- And what we would worship out of pure ignorance hides itself from Jesus Christ.
- 45:52
- And it reminds other angels that look identical to it how holy he is.
- 45:59
- And yet we take this such for granted. We take this such for granted.
- 46:05
- Our meetings are coming together, our worship, our reading, we take it for granted.
- 46:14
- He is the son. And the
- 46:19
- New Testament not only reveals that he's a son, but he is the eternal son. He is the eternal son.
- 46:29
- Matthew 3, Matthew 3, 13 through 17.
- 46:39
- I'm almost done, I'm sorry. Matthew 3, 13 to 17. And leaving Nazareth, he, oh no, 13 to 17.
- 46:48
- Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan of John. Remember, John saw him. Behold the Lamb of God.
- 46:54
- He came from Jordan to John to be baptized by him. John would have prevented him saying,
- 47:00
- I need to be baptized by you. And you, and do you come to me? And Jesus answered him, let it be so.
- 47:08
- For thus it is, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.
- 47:15
- And then, and then he conceded. And then, and when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water and behold the heavens opened to him.
- 47:26
- And he saw the spirit of God descending like a dove coming to rest upon him.
- 47:31
- And behold, a voice from heaven said, this is my son with whom
- 47:41
- I am well pleased. Remember Matthew 17,
- 47:48
- John, Peter, Peter, James, and John. Sees Moses, they see Elijah, they see Jesus in all of his glory.
- 47:55
- They heard the thunder, the thunder, the roar, they fall down in fear and they hear the voice again.
- 48:01
- This is my son. Listen to him. Don't listen to Moses. Listen to Elijah.
- 48:07
- Listen to Jesus. Moses, Moses and Elijah representing the law and the prophets.
- 48:14
- This is my son. Listen to him. John 3, 16, for God so loved the world that he sent his only son.
- 48:24
- The son, not angels. The son is the exact imprint of the image of God. The prop, excuse me, the prophetic voice of God that spoke all things into existence.
- 48:35
- The lamb who takes away the sins of the world. The high priest who sat down at the right hand of the father to whom him being king of king and Lord of lords was given all authority in heaven and on earth.
- 48:47
- Was given to him in that one day every knee will bow to kiss the sun.
- 48:55
- And that their tongues will confess him the son, Jesus Christ as Lord.
- 49:05
- And we take this for granted by way of conclusion.
- 49:13
- If you will turn to your in your Bibles to Colossians. Colossians chapter one beginning in verse 15.
- 49:28
- Speaking of Jesus, he is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creations.
- 49:36
- For by him all things were created in heaven and on earth. Visible, invisible, whether thrones or dominions, rulers or authorities, all things were created through him and for him.
- 49:49
- And he is before all things and in him all things hold together. He is the head of the body of the church.
- 49:58
- He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead and that every that that in everything he might be preeminent.
- 50:11
- For in him the fullness of God was pleased to dwell. And through him to reconcile himself to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of the cross.
- 50:26
- And you who were once alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds.
- 50:32
- He has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before him.
- 50:41
- If indeed you continue in the faith stable and steadfast and not shifting from the hope of the gospel that you heard, which he has, which has been proclaimed in all creation under heaven and of which
- 51:02
- I, Paul, became a minister. Jesus is preeminent.
- 51:08
- He surpasses all things. And as we go through this book, listen, as we go through this book, we will see
- 51:16
- Jesus as greater, as better because he is the substance of the shadows.
- 51:24
- This book is going to lay it out to us how he is the substance of the shadows, but also because he is before the substance.
- 51:35
- OK, these substance words was created after his likeness to point back to him.
- 51:44
- That's why that rock, that rock was a stop looking at me. Look at Christ, that rock was created because Jesus was created and in its creation, it points back to him.
- 52:06
- So I look forward going through this book with you as I pray you look forward going through it with me.
- 52:13
- As always, I am available if anyone needs prayer, if you're sick in body, whatever it may be.
- 52:23
- Concerns theologically and you want to talk, I'm here for you now throughout the day and throughout the week.
