00:16
Good Saturday morning, people of faith. This morning and this weekend, we're looking at Leviticus chapters 1 through 7.
00:27
Now, many Bible reading plans have, if you picture a ship on the sea,
00:38
Leviticus is where that ship hits the rocks in the yearly Bible reading plan.
00:47
Oftentimes, people read Genesis and they're excited and Exodus and it's still an exciting story and they get into Leviticus and there's all sorts of details about all sorts of things and it gets very difficult to read.
01:09
That does not mean that it is not beneficial to us, all right? So looking at chapter 1, it says,
01:19
Now the Lord called Moses and spoke to him from the tabernacle of meeting, saying,
01:25
Speak to the children of Israel and say to them, When any one of you brings an offering to the
01:33
Lord, you shall bring your offering of the livestock, of the herd, and of the flock.
01:39
And these next seven chapters are going to be talking about what to do, when to do it, how to do it, in terms of bringing your offering before the
01:53
Lord. And there's going to be many details, many details, all right?
01:58
So the first chapter is going to talk about the burnt offering, all right?
02:04
And you will frequently find that it should be a male without blemish that is sacrificed.
02:11
It could be also of birds. And again, all right, there's details for when it's to be done and when it's not to be done.
02:24
In chapter 2, we have the grain offering, all right?
02:29
And it says, Whenever anyone offers a grain offering to the Lord, his offering shall be a fine flour, and he shall pour oil on it and put frankincense on it.
02:41
He shall bring it to Aaron's sons, the priests, one of whom shall take from it his handful of fine flour and oil with all the frankincense.
02:51
And the priest shall burn it as a memorial on the altar, an offering made by fire, a sweet aroma to the
02:59
Lord. The rest of the grain offering shall be Aaron's and his sons. It is most holy of the offerings to the
03:08
Lord made by fire. So there's details about what's to be done with the offering, who it's to be given to, what they are supposed to do with that offering, all right?
03:20
And in this, we also begin to see how the Lord is going to provide for the sons of Aaron through this priesthood in providing sustenance for them.
03:36
Chapter 3 is the peace offering. Chapter 4, the sin offering.
03:44
And chapter 5, the trespass offering. All right?
03:50
And so there's offerings for so many different things, and there's rules for each of them.
03:56
Chapter 6, we have laws concerning the burnt offering and the grain offering and the sin offering.
04:04
And then chapter 7, we have the laws concerning the trespass offering and the peace offering, all right?
04:12
And with rules that they are not to eat the blood or the fat, all right?
04:19
And then finally, chapter 7 ends with discussion of how are the priests supposed to take certain portions of this and certain portions of that and offer those portions, and then the other portions they're supposed to do certain things with, and then they're able to have the sustenance from what is left over, all right?
04:46
And now, if you're like me, and you haven't spent a great deal of time looking at the intricacies of these different types of offerings here in the first seven chapters of Leviticus, your head begins to spin a little bit, and I want you to keep something in mind here.
05:09
So, if you happen to have Hebrews 10, verses 8 through 17 handy, it would be good to look at these.
05:22
Previously saying, this is referring to Scripture, sacrifice and offering, burnt offerings, and offerings for sin you did not desire nor had pleasure in them, which are offered according to the law.
05:39
Verse 9, then he said, behold, I have come to do your will, O God. He takes away the first that he may establish the second.
05:48
That's talking about taking away the first testament and replacing it with the second in terms of the order of the sacrifice.
06:00
This is Jesus talking about his sacrifice. By that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
06:14
Verse 11, and every priest stands ministering daily and offering repeatedly the same sacrifices which can never take away sins.
06:27
Now, the picture that you get from all the Old Testament sacrifices, that there was a sin for this, or there was a sacrifice for this sin, and for this sin, and for a free will offering, and for a grain offering, and there were all these different sacrifices, and the one thing those sacrifices could never do is take away sin.
06:51
Verse 12, though, but this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God.
07:05
Jesus' one sacrifice was sufficient payment for your sin.
07:12
All of the Old Testament sacrifices that went on for hundreds and hundreds of years, daily, time and time and time again, could never take away sins.
07:27
The priests were never allowed to sit down because their work was never done.
07:33
Jesus, however, after his one sacrifice, did sit down because his work was finished.
07:41
As he said on the cross, it is finished. From that time, verse 13, waiting till his enemies are made his footstool, for by one offering, he has perfected forever those who are being sanctified.
08:03
Ladies and gentlemen, that group of people that has been perfected forever are those who are being sanctified, those of us who have placed our trust in what
08:20
Christ has done for us. The Lord views us as if we had never sinned.
08:31
Let's think on this, on this Saturday, as we remember all those
08:36
Old Testament sacrifices compared with the one sacrifice of Christ.
08:44
Let's pray. Heavenly Father, thank you for the gift of your
08:50
Son. If there's anyone in hearing of this today who has not placed their trust in you,
08:57
I pray that you would bring them to the point of seeing their need of you, and that they need to repent of their sin and trust in you.
09:10
It's in your Son's name, Jesus, we pray, amen. Have an excellent day, people of faith.
