06:04
Good morning, and welcome to Kootenai Church. We are glad that you're here this morning. Would you please stand as we read from Romans chapter 8 for our call to worship this morning?
06:20
It says, What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who is against us?
06:26
He who indeed did not spare his own son, but delivered him over for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?
06:36
Who will bring a charge against God's elect? God is the one who justifies. Who is the one who condemns?
06:43
Christ Jesus is he who died. Yes, rather who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who also intercedes for us.
06:52
Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will affliction or turmoil or persecution or famine or nakedness or peril or sword, just as it is written?
07:03
For your sake we are being put to death all day long. We were counted as sheep for the slaughter.
07:11
But in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life nor angels nor rulers nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any created thing will be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our
07:32
Lord. So for this Reformation Sunday morning, let's praise our loving God and sing
07:38
Martin Luther's classic hymn, A Mighty Fortress. A mighty fortress is our
07:51
God, a bulwark never failing. Our helper he amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing.
08:07
For still our ancient foe does seem to work us woe.
08:15
His craft and power are great, hand -armed with cruel aid.
08:23
On earth is not his equal. Did we in our own strength confide our striving would be losing?
08:38
Were not the right man on our side, the man of God's own choosing?
08:47
Thus ask who that may be. Christ Jesus, it is he.
08:55
The Lord upholds his name from age to age the same.
09:04
And he must win the battle. And though this world with devil's fill should threaten to undo us, we will not fear, for God hath willed his truth to triumph through us.
09:27
The prince of darkness grim, we tremble not for him.
09:34
His rage we can endure, for lo, his doom is sure.
09:43
One little word shall fill him. That word above all earthly powers, no thanks to them abideth.
09:56
The Spirit and the gifts are ours through him who with us sideth.
10:06
Let good and kindred go. This mortal life also.
10:14
The body they may kill. God's truth abideth still.
10:21
His kingdom is forever. Mighty King, help us thy name to see.
10:44
Help us to praise. Father all -glorious,
10:50
Lord all -victorious. Come and reign over us, ancient of days.
11:01
Come, thou incarnate Word, gird on thy mighty sword.
11:10
Our prayer attend. Come and thy people bless and give thy word success.
11:19
Spirit of holiness on us descend. Holy Comforter, thy sacred witness bear in this glad hour.
11:39
Thou who almighty art, now rule in every heart.
11:44
And there from us depart, Spirit of power.
11:52
To thee, great one in three, eternal praises be.
12:01
Hence evermore, thy sovereign majesty may we in glory see.
12:10
And to eternity, love and adore. I sought the
12:31
Lord, and he answered me. And delivered me from every fear.
12:43
Those who look on him are radiant. They'll never be ashamed.
12:52
They'll never be ashamed. This poor man cried, and the
12:58
Lord heard me. And saved me from my enemies.
13:07
The Son of God surrounds his saints.
13:13
He will deliver them. He will deliver them.
13:18
Magnify the Lord with me.
13:25
Come, exalt his name together.
13:31
Glorify the Lord with me.
13:37
Come, exalt his name forever.
13:42
Taste and see that the Lord is good.
13:49
Oh, bless his feet who hide in him.
13:55
Oh, fear the Lord for all you saints.
14:00
He'll give you everything. He'll give you everything. Magnify the
14:09
Lord with me. Come, exalt his name together.
14:18
Glorify the Lord with me. Come, exalt his name forever.
14:28
Let us bless the
14:37
Lord every day and night. Never ending praise, may our incense rise.
14:47
Let us bless the Lord every day and night.
14:53
Never ending praise, may our incense rise.
14:59
Magnify the Lord with me.
15:04
Come, exalt his name together.
15:11
Glorify the Lord with me. Come, exalt his name forever.
15:28
Come, exalt his name together. Glorify the
15:36
Lord with me. Come, exalt his name forever.
15:51
You may be seated. I have three announcements.
16:12
The first one, Jim's not here today. I'd like to say he's doing something, you know, very spiritual and important.
16:22
He's with Liam and Shepley at a 49ers game today, which he authorized me to go ahead and share that with you.
16:30
He did want me to say it was a much -deserved vacation. I don't know about that.
16:37
No. Hope he's having a great time. Casey asked me also to remind those of you who can sing,
16:45
I'm looking at some of you individually, that there's a choir practice one week from today.
16:52
And there are no rehearsals, so even if you can't sing, she's not going to know until you are in the thing.
17:01
And lastly, there's an insert here about the craft fair. I'd ask you to look at that.
17:07
Any kids that are interested in that? Let Katie know. Turn in your
17:13
Bibles to Ephesians chapter one. We're going to read the entire chapter, establish some context for David's message today.
17:24
So I won't ask you to stand. I'm barely going to be able to stand this long.
17:31
Ephesians chapter one. Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God. To the saints who are in Ephesus and are faithful in Christ Jesus, grace to you and peace from God our
17:42
Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places.
17:52
Even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him.
17:59
In love, he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace with which he has blessed us in the beloved.
18:10
In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses according to the riches of his grace, which he lavished upon us in all wisdom and insight, making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth.
18:31
In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things, according to the counsel of his will, so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory.
18:45
In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation and believed in him, were sealed with the promised
18:51
Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.
18:59
For this reason, because I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints, I do not cease to give thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers, that the
19:07
God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the spirit of wisdom and of revelation and the knowledge of him, having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, so that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might, that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come.
19:42
And he put all things under his feet and gave him his head over all things to the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.
19:54
Powerful chapter. Let's pray together. Father, just to hear the blessings that you've chosen to pour out on your children, it's astounding and humbling.
20:05
It is crushing and uplifting. Lord, I pray that as David approaches your word today,
20:13
I pray that you would give him clarity, that his words would be your words, that he would faithfully share from this your word.
20:21
And I pray for all of us that we would be confessing our sins, clearing the way for us to have open hearts, to hear what it is that you would have us to hear.
20:28
May we now sing to you from our hearts in Jesus' name. Please stand and let's sing together,
20:40
Be still, be still my soul, Psalm 46. Be still, be still my soul,
21:18
Psalm 46. When all I see are enemies before me,
21:28
When unbelief and doubt have taken hold,
21:33
O Lord of hosts, you promised to defeat them.
21:40
Be still, be still my soul, For you are
21:48
God, I need not fear your sovereign over all.
21:58
For you are good and always near,
22:04
I'll rest in you alone. Be still my soul,
22:20
Though all around the wicked seem to prosper,
22:27
They mock your name and rise against your throne. O righteous judge, their deeds you will remember.
22:40
Be still, be still my soul, For you are
22:47
God, I need not fear your sovereign over all.
22:57
For you are good and always near,
23:03
I'll rest in you alone. For you are
23:11
God, I need not fear your sovereign over all.
23:20
For you are good and always near,
23:26
I'll rest in you alone. Be still my soul,
23:42
Though wars erupt, you will not leave us orphans.
23:48
Though nations rage, you guard us as your own.
23:54
O Prince of Peace, we will not be abandoned.
24:01
Be still, be still my soul, Be still, be still my soul.
24:15
In Revelation chapter 5, verses 11 to 14, it says, Then I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels around the throne, and the living creatures and the elders, and the number of them was myriads and myriads and thousands of thousands, saying with a loud voice,
24:32
Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power and riches and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and blessing.
24:40
And every created thing which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth and on the sea and all the things in them,
24:47
I heard saying, To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be the blessing and the honor and the glory and the might forever and ever.
24:57
And the four living creatures kept saying, Amen, and the elders fell down and worshiped.
25:02
We're going to end our music service this morning and sing together the Reformation Hymn. We will trust
25:24
God's word alone where his perfect will is known.
25:31
Our traditions shift like sand while his truth forever stands.
25:40
We will live by faith alone loathed in merit, not our own.
25:48
All we claim is Jesus Christ and his finished sacrifice.
25:59
Glory be, glory be to God alone through the church that he redeemed and made his own.
26:15
He has freed us, he will keep us till we're safely home.
26:24
Glory be, glory be to God alone.
26:32
We are saved by grace alone undeserved yet freely shown.
26:40
No accomplishment on earth can achieve a second birth.
26:49
We will stand on Christ alone the unyielding cornerstone.
26:57
The nation's rage and devil's roar still he reigns forevermore.
27:07
Glory be, glory be to God alone through the church that he redeemed and made his own.
27:23
He has freed us, he will keep us till we're safely home.
27:31
Glory be, glory be to God alone.
27:39
Glory be, glory be to God alone through the church that he redeemed and made his own.
27:56
He has freed us, he will keep us till we're safely home.
28:04
Glory be, glory be to God alone.
28:12
You may be seated. Well, good to be here with you and open the word of God together.
28:45
So, turn to the first chapter of Ephesians this morning. Ephesians chapter 1.
29:00
And let us pray to begin. Our Father, our time has been rich already as we have sung to one another the great salvation truths contained in the
29:18
Scriptures. We have been reminded of the Reformation, that firestorm that Martin Luther launched inadvertently by which you recovered the gospel in which we now stand.
29:37
We heard the word of God read and come face to face with your glory therein and how grateful we are.
29:46
We do now pray, our Father, that you would give us attentive hearts, listening ears.
29:53
Help us to see, help us to hear, help us to believe, and help us to do.
30:01
We pray for the glory of Christ. Amen. Cold, dark, and lifeless for thousands of years, that is how we have regarded the world's deep oceans.
30:19
In fact, it wasn't until 1960 that we were even able to send a bathyscaphe down to the bottom of the
30:30
Mariana Trench. That is the deepest spot on this planet.
30:37
It's almost seven miles deep. Deep enough to submerge
30:43
Mount Everest and have more than a mile of ocean above its highest peak.
30:50
95 % of the oceans of this planet remain unexplored.
30:58
In that sense, it is the final and great frontier. And most of those oceans are what is considered the deep ocean.
31:07
The deep ocean. What exactly is this deep ocean? Well, the first 600 feet are called the open ocean.
31:21
And that is where the majority of the life that we know of lives. It is there that the light penetrates.
31:29
From 600 to 3 ,000 feet of depth is known as the twilight zone.
31:35
The further down you go, the less and less light penetrates until at about 3 ,000 feet you encounter total darkness.
31:45
And from there, the rest of the way down, the oceans are completely devoid of light.
31:51
You have now reached the deep ocean. Down there, the temperatures constantly stay near freezing.
32:01
A pressure at these depths ranges from 40 to over 110 times the pressure of the
32:07
Earth's atmosphere. There at the bottom of the Marianas Trench, the water pressure is the equivalent of 50 jumbo jets piled on top of you.
32:18
Just to give you an idea. So, why am
32:23
I telling you about the deep ocean, other than it interests me? The reason is because the impression that the deep ocean is cold, dark, and lifeless, in many ways illustrates how some people view
32:40
God. And in particular, His sovereignty.
32:46
In particular, His sovereignty. The first chapter of the book of Ephesians that was read for us is densely packed with spiritually and intellectually challenging concepts.
33:00
In verse 4, we encounter the doctrine of election, just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world that we would be holy and blameless before Him.
33:12
In chapter 5, we encounter Paul's statements about predestination and adoption, where he says,
33:18
In love He predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself according to the kind intention of His will.
33:29
Verses 9 and 10, we encounter God's plan for the ages, where He made known to us the mystery of His will according to His kind intention, which
33:39
He purposed in Him, that is, in Christ, with a view to an administration suitable to the fullness of the times, that is, the summing up of all things in Christ, things in the heavens and things on the earth.
33:54
Three times in this chapter, we see the refrain to the praise of His glory, right?
34:02
Verse 6, to the praise of His glory. Verse 12, to the praise of His glory.
34:07
Verse 14, to the praise of His glory. And yet, and yet.
34:16
Some folks read and hear about the sovereignty of God in salvation and they recoil from it.
34:24
They see it as a hateful doctrine that makes God out to be a powerful and merciless tyrant.
34:34
For others, they become convinced from the Scriptures that these doctrines are indeed true, but they view them a little like being told to eat your vegetables.
34:45
You know it's good for you, but you just assume not. Right? You just assume not.
34:53
Others wield these great doctrines like a spiritual war club, bludgeoning every believer into either submission or flight.
35:05
It seems with them that every conversation ultimately ends back on the five points of Calvinism.
35:14
I want to avoid all of that. I want to avoid all of that with you this morning by recognizing that any true understanding of God's sovereignty is built upon Paul's ascription of praise to God the
35:31
Father in verse 3. Let your eyes go there. Blessed be the
35:38
God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. That's it. That's our text for this morning.
35:47
In particular, as we begin to probe this text,
35:52
I want to draw out for you three thrilling and heartwarming realities, three thrilling and heartwarming realities that are inherent in this designation.
36:03
As God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Now, we don't have time to deeply explore all of them.
36:15
I can only acquaint you with these in one sermon. So let me just introduce you to it and recommend to you that you spend some time in further reflection and study yourself and see if these things are not so.
36:32
So here they are. The first thrilling, heartwarming reality here is that God is essentially a
36:43
Father. That God is essentially a
36:48
Father. The God of the Bible is triune. He is one
36:54
God, eternally existing in three persons, Father, Son, and Spirit. This reality is essential to the
37:03
Christian faith because it is essential to the very nature and identity of the one true
37:08
God. We serve a triune God. And when we speak about God, it is common to identify him as both the creator and ruler of the universe.
37:23
That's a common way to refer to him. But, beloved, to think of him exclusively, or even primarily in these terms, does injustice to his person.
37:39
God is more than creator and ruler of the universe.
37:46
Much more. Does that statement strike you? Does it disquiet you?
37:56
Michael Reeves, in his wonderful little book that I would heartily commend to you, called
38:02
Delighting in the Trinity, he writes the following. I quote,
38:09
If God's very identity is to be the creator, then he needs a creation to rule in order to be who he is.
38:21
Let me say it again. If God's very identity is to be the creator, then he needs the creation to rule in order to be who he is.
38:35
In other words, that would make God dependent upon his creation for his own existence.
38:43
And that, my friends, is not our God. It is not our
38:50
God. But it is definitely not the God of the Scriptures. Is God the creator of the universe?
38:57
Absolutely. That is absolutely true. But it is not who he is fundamentally and essentially.
39:09
Fundamentally and essentially. God is not essentially the creator.
39:17
Nor is his identity as the ruler and the lawgiver his essential identity.
39:25
Because if that were true, then my problem would be that I have broken his rules. I have broken his rules.
39:33
And if my fundamental problem is that I have broken God's rules,
39:39
I have broken his law, if that is my fundamental problem, then the only salvation he can offer me is to treat me as if I had kept those rules.
39:49
As if I had kept that law. In other words, my relation with him would be a little different from that of a police officer who pulls me over for speeding and then decides to let me off without writing a ticket.
40:06
Would I be grateful? You bet. But I would not love him.
40:14
I would not love him. And if I cannot truly love
40:21
God simply as the ruler, then that means
40:27
I can never keep his first commandment, which is to love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength.
40:38
He's got to be more. He is more than creator. He is more than ruler.
40:44
He is more than lawgiver. So who is he?
40:50
Who is our God? And the answer is bound up in the revelation of Jesus Christ, the
40:59
Son of God. If Jesus is the
41:05
Son, and he is, then obviously he has a father.
41:11
Then obviously he has a father. And it is this that is the very essence of our
41:18
God. It is that he is a father. In fact, this is the way
41:24
Jesus revealed him. In John 14, 6, he said, I am the way, the truth, and the life.
41:31
No one comes to the Father except through me.
41:38
This notion, by the way, of God as the Father is the repeated testimony of Scripture.
41:45
We don't have to wait until we get to the first chapter of Paul's letter to the church at Ephesus to go, pow,
41:52
God's a father. It's actually the uniform testimony of Scripture. Turn with me, if you will.
42:00
Let me just show you this quickly. In Exodus 4, verse 22, where we see there that the
42:09
Lord calls Israel his firstborn son. His firstborn son.
42:17
Exodus 4, 22. Then you shall say to Pharaoh, Thus says the
42:25
Lord, Israel is my son, my firstborn. My firstborn.
42:34
In Deuteronomy chapter 1 and verse 31, God tells us that he carries his people as a father carries his son.
42:44
Deuteronomy 1 and 31. And in the wilderness, where you saw how the
42:51
Lord your God carried you just as a man carries his son in all the way which you walked until you came to this place.
43:01
He disciplines them as a father disciplines his son. Deuteronomy chapter 8 and verse 5.
43:10
Thus you are to know in your heart that the Lord your God was disciplining you just as a man disciplines his son.
43:20
His son. God has compassion on his people like a father on his son.
43:27
Psalm 103 and verse 13. Where David writes just as a father has compassion on his children.
43:47
So the Lord has compassion on those who fear him.
43:56
The repeated refrain of the Gospels is Jesus calling
44:01
God his father. Calling God his father.
44:08
And Paul and Peter themselves refer to God as the
44:13
God and father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Romans chapter 15 and verse 6.
44:23
Romans 15 6. So with one accord you may with one voice glorify the God and father of our
44:30
Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Peter 1 13. We have
44:36
Peter's words. 1 Peter 1 3. I'm sorry. 1
44:42
Peter 1 3. Blessed be the God and father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Blessed be the
44:48
God and father of our Lord Jesus Christ. And then one more for you. Hebrews chapter 12 and verse 7.
44:56
Hebrews chapter 12 and verse 7. Where there we are told that God treats us as believers as sons when he disciplines us, right?
45:05
12 7. It is for discipline that you endure. God deals with you as with sons.
45:10
For what son is there whom his father does not discipline? It is the testimony of Scripture that God is essentially a father.
45:24
And since God is before all things a father and not primarily creator or ruler, then all his ways are beautifully fatherly.
45:36
All his ways are beautifully fatherly. In other words, all that God does, he does as a father.
45:45
That is who he is. That is who he is.
45:51
What does that mean? Well, among many things, it means that even an orphan, even an orphan can know and understand fatherhood by coming to know
46:02
God. He is the pattern for which the human father is the illustration.
46:09
He is the pattern. The human father is the illustration. And the beauty and the glory of all this is that even if you had a less than ideal human father, if that was your experience, then all is not lost.
46:24
You can still know and have everything you need to understand what it means to have and to be a father by studying the pattern, not the illustration.
46:39
The pattern, not the illustration. God is essentially a father.
46:49
Second, God the Father eternally loves
46:55
God the Son. God the Father eternally loves
47:00
God the Son. Question for you. What was
47:06
God doing before the creation of the world? What was God doing before the creation of the world?
47:16
Sitting around, waiting? No. He was eternally loving the
47:24
Son. Eternally loving the Son. John 17 .24,
47:30
where Jesus prays, Father, you loved me before the foundation of the world.
47:36
What was God doing before He created this world? He was loving
47:42
His Son. Loving His Son. Now the implications of that, of the eternal love of the
47:49
Father for the Son, are immense. And they are thrilling. They are thrilling.
47:58
It explains why God created humanity. It explains why
48:04
God created humanity. Why did He do it? He did it to share and reflect His love.
48:10
To share and reflect His love. Not like Allah, where the
48:17
Muslim is told that Allah created in order to create servants or worshippers. No.
48:26
The true God created because love is always outgoing. Always sharing.
48:35
In Genesis 1 .26, we are told, and God said, We are made in the likeness of God.
48:49
And thus are able to love ourselves. It explains why
48:55
God redeems humanity. It explains why He redeems us. Why? It is out of an overflow of His love.
49:03
John 3 .16, In Ephesians, back to Ephesians 1, so we don't depart from this completely.
49:21
In verses 4 and 5 we see it. Which He freely bestowed on us in the
49:35
Beloved. 1 John 4 .10,
49:43
In this is love, not that we love God, but that He loved us and sent
49:49
His Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Romans 8 .29,
50:10
So that He would be the firstborn among many brethren. And these whom
50:15
He predestined, He also called. And these whom He called, He also justified. And these whom He justified,
50:20
He also called. What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who is against us?
50:26
Shurahs drop down to verse 37, But in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who, what?
50:34
Who loved us. Why did
50:40
God create us? He created us out of the overflow of His love. It is also, by the way, the motivation for us to love others made in His image.
50:53
It is our motivation. When we get our arms around God's immense love for us, then it is close out in our love for others.
51:03
Matthew chapter 22. Matthew 22, verse 37.
51:19
And He said to him, You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. And this is the great and foremost commandment.
51:26
The second is like it. You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend the whole law and the prophets.
51:36
They are built upon the love of God. His love for you being primary and our love for Him and others.
51:42
The necessary derivative of it. We even see it earlier in Matthew chapter 5 there in the
51:49
Sermon on the Mount. Matthew 5.
51:57
In verse 43, You have heard that it was said, You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy. But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your
52:09
Father who is in heaven. For He causes His Son to rise on the evil and the good and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.
52:18
It motivates us. A right understanding of God's love motivates us to love others.
52:30
It is the love of God that explains and illustrates the giving nature of true love.
52:37
First John 3 .16. First John 3 .16.
52:48
We know love by this. That He laid down His life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.
53:00
And that great chapter in 1 Corinthians chapter 13. Verse Paul speaks of the giving nature of love itself.
53:12
1 Corinthians 13. And beginning in verse 4, Love is patient.
53:18
Love is kind. It is not jealous. Love does not brag. It is not arrogant.
53:24
It does not act unbecomingly. It does not seek its own. It is not provoked. It does not take into account a wrong suffered.
53:31
It does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
53:40
Love is essentially outward looking, outward focused. Life giving, if I can say it that way.
53:51
Beloved, God is many things. He is a creator. He is the creator.
53:58
He is the ruler of the universe. But His fundamental identity is that of a loving father.
54:06
It is that of a loving father. And it's in thus, back to Ephesians chapter 1.
54:14
It is in that glorious reality of a loving father that these great doctrines of election and predestination enable us to revel in the love of God.
54:33
It is no longer a cold and sterile academic reality that God chose you.
54:42
Instead, it forms the basis for us to offer Him praise for the glory of His grace.
54:49
Does it not? It is the love of God, shared with us through our adoption and union with His Son, in which we experience the love of God.
55:07
God is essentially a father. God the Father eternally loves
55:13
God the Son. God the
55:20
Father is in eternal fellowship with God the Son. God the
55:27
Father is in eternal fellowship with God the Son. From all eternity,
55:35
God the Father has been loving and enjoying intimate fellowship within the
55:41
Godhead. From all of eternity. John 1 .18
55:48
John 1 .18 No one has seen
55:59
God at any time. The only begotten God who is at the
56:05
Father's side. He has explained Him. At the
56:11
Father's side or in the bosom of the Father. Chapter 17 of John's Gospel and verse 5.
56:19
17 .5 Now, Father, glorify me together with Yourself with the glory which
56:32
I had with You before the world was. Bring me home.
56:39
Bring me home. Verse 23. I in them,
56:47
You in me, that they may be perfected in unity, so that the world may know that You sent me and love them even as You have loved me.
56:59
In other words, as we experience the fellowship that God the
57:06
Father and God the Son have enjoyed from all eternity, we begin to experience what it means to live the new life in Christ.
57:19
It is through the overflow of that love that God created Adam and Eve. And He invited them into a loving fellowship with Him.
57:29
Genesis 3 .8 The Lord God walked in the garden in the cool of the day, it says.
57:36
God walked with them in the garden in the cool of the day. That is a description of fellowship. It is fellowship.
57:44
It is fellowship that existed, of course, before ruination.
57:53
It was Adam's disobedience that shattered that fellowship. Shattered it.
58:00
You remember, he sought to hide himself from God. No longer did they walk in fellowship.
58:07
Adam sought to hide from God. It was
58:13
Adam's disobedience that shattered the fellowship. But God in His mercy instituted a sacrificial system whereby that relational damage could be partially and temporarily rolled back until the time would come when we could once again enjoy that unhindered fellowship.
58:36
That which God established for them would allow humanity to come near, but not too near.
58:44
Near, but not too near. Exodus chapter 19.
58:50
Exodus 19, beginning in verse 10.
58:58
The Lord also said to Moses, Go to the people and consecrate them today and tomorrow and let them wash their garments.
59:04
And let them be ready for the third day, for on the third day the Lord will come down on Mount Sinai in the sight of all the people.
59:11
You shall set bounds for the people all around, saying, Beware that you do not go up on the mountain or touch the border of it, for whoever touches the mountain shall surely die.
59:23
No hand shall touch him, but he shall surely be stoned or shot through. Whether beast or man, he shall not live.
59:28
When the ram's horn sounds a long blast, they shall come up to the mountain. It was a terrifying thing.
59:36
And that was the state of humanity. The whole design of the temple system was that you could come close, but only so far.
59:49
The Gentiles. You could come into the court of the Gentiles, but there's the wall that keeps you out.
59:55
Then there's the court of the women. The women can come a little closer, but not too far.
01:00:02
Then the court of the men. And the Jewish men can come closer still, but not too close.
01:00:08
And then into the temple itself where the priesthood could go. But there's one part of the temple that's off limits.
01:00:17
Except for one man. One day a year. For a finite time for a limited purpose.
01:00:24
And that for millennia is what the relationship was like. That's what it was like.
01:00:32
And then in the fullness of time, right? God sent his beloved son into the world so that the world might experience the love and the intimacy between he and his father.
01:00:45
He tore down the middle wall of partition. The veil that separated them from the
01:00:51
Holy of Holies was rent from top to bottom. It was thrown wide open. Fellowship again.
01:00:58
Reestablished. John chapter 17 and verse 3.
01:01:04
This is eternal life, that they may know you, the only true
01:01:10
God and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. This is eternal life, that they may know you.
01:01:19
That they may know you. Now the knowledge spoken up here is not a download of intellectual information.
01:01:25
It's speaking of intimacy. It's speaking of fellowship. It's speaking of a shared life together.
01:01:33
That which the father desires Jesus and his disciples to be joined to.
01:01:39
Again, go to John 17.
01:01:47
Verse 24. Father, I desire that they also whom you have given me be with me where I am so that they may see my glory which you have given me for you loved me before the foundation of the world.
01:02:15
Oh, righteous father, although the world has not known you yet I have known you and these have known that you sent me and I have made your name known to them and will make it known so that the love with which you loved me may be in them and I in them.
01:02:36
Brought into fellowship with the living God. Brought into fellowship with the living
01:02:44
God. What is the means by which this happens?
01:02:50
It is our adoption as sons. That's what Paul says in Ephesians 1 and verse 5.
01:02:56
That we are predestined to adoption as sons of God in union with Christ.
01:03:02
And it is in that state as the adopted sons of God that we now enjoy the intimacy with God that Christ his son enjoys with him.
01:03:17
Romans 8, 15. You have received the spirit of adoption, Paul says, as sons by which we cry out what?
01:03:28
Abba, Father. A term of intimacy.
01:03:34
Abba, Father. In Christ we draw near to the
01:03:42
Father. Beyond that, incredible as that is, there is the practical realities of it that it is our fellowship with the
01:03:55
Father that provides the means and the motivation for our desire to avoid sin.
01:04:02
What gives us the motivation to avoid sin? What provides the means by which we avoid sin?
01:04:10
Well, sin is ultimately an attack on a relationship and destroys fellowship.
01:04:18
It is as we understand our position in Christ and revel in the fellowship that is ours because of what he has done for us that we don't want sin any longer.
01:04:32
We're not satisfied to live like that, one who is estranged from God.
01:04:37
We desire to live out the family identity. Beyond that, beloved, it is the fellowship with the
01:04:49
Father that we have in Christ that provides the basis for our fellowship with each other. We look around the room, there are hundreds of us here.
01:04:59
What brings us together? What holds us together? It is our fellowship established by Christ as he shares that which he and his
01:05:14
Father have long from eternity past shared, experienced, reveled in.
01:05:23
Jesus even left us a simple illustration of that when we come to the communion table.
01:05:34
The communion table. Every time we eat at the Lord's table, we proclaim our fellowship with one another.
01:05:43
We are in union with each other. We are in fellowship with each other.
01:05:52
All right. Big ideas. I get it. Hopefully you can be moved to think about this a little more.
01:06:02
But let me see if I can drive it home for you a little bit here. Let me ask you a question.
01:06:08
What are your relationships like? What are your relationships like?
01:06:17
The unbelievers gather for food, family, and fun.
01:06:24
That's what unbelievers gather for. Food, family, and fun. But as a follower of Christ, here's my question.
01:06:35
Is there anything distinctly Christian about your relationships here at KCC?
01:06:46
Are your relationships here, can they be characterized as food, family, fun?
01:06:53
Because if that's true, that's not fellowship. It's not fellowship.
01:07:02
As you consider your relationships here, think about this. As our
01:07:09
Heavenly Father is life -giving, do you have any relationships in which you give life to another person?
01:07:21
Do you have any relationships in which you are the one who gives life to that person?
01:07:28
Spiritual life. Spiritual life. In what way does your love of the brethren display your likeness to Christ?
01:07:41
Have you been transformed? Are you living out that identity? And third and finally, since fellowship is sharing life and word together, the very word itself means sharing, outside of your family, with whom do you have regular fellowship in this body?
01:08:08
With whom are you experiencing regular fellowship together?
01:08:21
May God grant us His grace that we might think seriously on these things, that He would reveal the truth to us.
01:08:28
Let's pray. Father, thank You. Thank You that we call You Father. Thank You that the very fact that You are
01:08:36
Father makes You life -giving. And as You shed
01:08:41
Your life abroad through Your Son, and specifically with us through our union with Him, You draw us into the loving fellowship that You and He and Your Spirit have enjoyed together since eternity past.
01:08:59
We are drawn up into that. We experience something new, something transformational, something unexplainable, short of an understanding that it is
01:09:16
You who have done this for us. Oh, may these great doctrines that we love so much evoke from our lips aspirations of praise and glory to God the
01:09:32
Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen and amen. Would you please stand and let's sing together.
01:09:42
Come, praise and glorify. Praise and glorify our
01:10:02
God, the Father of our Lord. In Christ He has in heavenly realms
01:10:11
His blessings on us poured. For pure and blameless in His sight
01:10:19
He dressed in us to be. And now we've been adopted through His Son eternal we.
01:10:32
To the praise of Your glory, to the praise of Your mercy and grace, to the praise of Your glory,
01:10:44
You are the God who saves. Praise and glorify our
01:10:57
God who gives His grace in Christ. In Him our sins are washed away, redeemed through sacrifice.
01:11:09
In Him God has made known to us the mystery of His will, that Christ should be the head of all
01:11:21
His purpose to fulfill. To the praise of Your glory, to the praise of Your mercy and grace, to the praise of Your glory,
01:11:38
You are the God who saves. Praise and glorify our
01:12:08
God, for we believe the Word. And through our faith we have a seal, the
01:12:16
Spirit of the Lord. The Spirit guarantees our hope until redemption's done, until we join in endless praise to God the three in one.
01:12:37
To the praise of Your glory, to the praise of Your mercy and grace, to the praise of Your glory,
01:12:48
You are the God who saves. To the praise of Your glory, to the praise of Your mercy and grace, to the praise of Your glory,
01:13:03
You are the God who saves. Now may the
01:13:09
God of perseverance and encouragement grant you to be of the same mind with one another according to Christ Jesus, so that with one accord you may with one voice glorify the
