to the Ruled Church Podcast. This is my beloved son, with whom I am well pleased.
00:07
He is honored, and I get the glory. And by the way, it's even better, because you see that building in Perryville, Arkansas?
00:13
You see that one in Pechote, Mexico? Do you see that one in Tuxla, Guterres, down there in Chiapas? That building has my son's name on it.
00:21
The church is not a democracy, it's a monarchy. Christ is king. You can't be
00:26
Christian without a local church. You can't do anything better than to bend your knee and bow your heart, turn from your sin and repentance, believe on the
00:37
Lord Jesus Christ, and join up with a good Bible -believing church, and spend your life serving
00:44
Jesus in a local, visible congregation. Welcome to the
00:53
Ruled Church Podcast. Today, it's just me, Alan Nelson, co -host.
01:00
But what we thought we'd share today, we've talked before about some of our mission work in Mexico and FIRM, Fellowship of International Reform Missions.
01:12
One of the things we do is each week on Wednesdays, we have a meeting with pastors in Mexico, and we do teaching.
01:22
And so we thought in today's episode, we'd share that teaching. Not only two -fold.
01:27
One, you can kinda see why, what we do, but also I think this will help all pastors.
01:34
It's not just for pastors in Mexico, it's pastors in America, pastors all over the world. So today's teaching is from 2
01:41
Timothy 4 -5, and we're exhorting pastors about doing the work of an evangelist.
01:47
And so what you'll notice is that I'm teaching, and then that Pastor Jonathan Murdock is translating that, so you'll listen to the
01:54
English and the Spanish. It'll go back and forth. And that can be strange if you haven't ever heard that before, but it's profitable.
02:02
So listen to the teaching, hope you're benefited from it, and kinda see what we do on Wednesdays with the brothers from FIRM.
02:11
And then also hope that you're edified, encouraged, and challenged about doing the work of an evangelist.
02:17
So we'll start right off. Here we go. I wanna start with 2
02:23
Timothy 4 -5. Quiero empezar con 2 Timothy 4 -5.
02:29
And I wanna talk about the work of a pastor in evangelism.
02:38
Jonathan, I didn't catch, I got on, but it sounds like Brother Randall was telling about his evangelism last night.
02:46
Well, amen, that's a great real -time example for our study this morning.
02:55
So let's start out reading 2
03:04
03:21
Jonathan, that's one of the reasons I don't respond when people are picking on me.
03:30
Paul says, I'm to endure suffering. Dice Pablo que debo soportar las aflicciones.
03:37
But in part of this great text, Paul tells Timothy that he is to do the work of an evangelist.
03:43
So I have some thoughts for us from this text.
03:52
So for an order for a pastor to be a faithful evangelist.
04:00
First I would say we need to know what an evangelist is.
04:08
I don't want to spend a ton of time here, but this word is used two other times in the
04:21
New Testament. So let's just look at those real quick.
04:28
Acts 21 .8. Lo miramos esto rápido. Hechos 21 .8? Acts 21 .8,
04:35
yeah. Dice, al otro día, saliendo
04:40
04:59
So Philip was an evangelist. Felipe era evangelista. And then of course the more popular text is
05:07
Ephesians 4 .11.
05:24
We could really get bogged down this and if we have time and you have questions later, you can discuss.
05:35
So the debate is, is an evangelist, is it an office?
05:44
I think it's, I think it's seems to be true that some, at least some evangelists were apostolic assistants, as it were.
05:55
06:05
But really for our point today. Por nuestro punto hoy. I wanna talk about how this is a responsibility inherently connected to pastoral ministry.
06:16
06:23
The reason I say this is because it's directly connected to probably our favorite passage from 2
06:31
Timothy 4.
06:38
Timoteo. In fact, I don't know if you can see it behind me. Let's see. Do you see the Greek behind me?
06:47
Que rusan tan lagan. Yeah.
06:53
From 2 Timothy 4, preach the word. De 2 Timoteo 4, predicas la palabra.
06:59
And none of us would deny that the preaching of God's word is essential to pastoral ministry.
07:06
07:12
But within this same passage. Pero en medio de este mismo pasaje. And Paul tells
07:18
Timothy to do the work of an evangelist. Pablo dice a Timoteo, haz obra de evangelista.
07:24
I also wanna mention this. También quiero mencionar esto. Non -pastors can be evangelists.
07:32
The confession talks about gifted men.
07:38
07:48
Dotados. Dotados, así es. And so the church should recognize.
07:56
La iglesia debe reconocer. Authorize and encourage. Autorizar y animar.
08:02
Other men, qualified men. Otros hombres calificados. To do the work of an evangelist.
08:09
Para hacer la obra de evangelista. But for this, we wanna emphasize the pastoral leadership necessary.
08:18
And so in the text,
08:25
Paul doesn't say for Timothy to be an evangelist. En el texto, no dice
08:31
Pablo a Timoteo, seas evangelista. But to do the work of an evangelist.
08:38
Pero haces la obra de evangelista. And I'll talk about that more in just a minute. Hablo de esto más en un momento.
08:45
So we need to know what an evangelist is. Debemos saber que es un evangelista. And secondly, we need to know what an evangelist does.
08:54
Segundo, debemos saber que hace un evangelista. The Greek word is euangelistis.
09:00
La palabra es en griego euangelistis. There is a usage of this word outside the
09:08
New Testament. And it means one who proclaims oracles.
09:21
Oracles. Oracles. And so obviously, as we bring that word into the
09:27
New Testament, as we understand the Holy Spirit's usage of it, entendiendo el uso del
09:36
Espíritu Santo de esta palabra. I think within the word itself, there are two aspects of what an evangelist does.
09:45
There is the content.
09:55
And there is the proclamation. There is the act of communicating the gospel.
10:04
El acto de comunicar el evangelio. So first, then, the content. What it is that Timothy is to do is it's not to be a politician.
10:22
Do the work of a politician. That's not what
10:30
Paul says. No es lo que está diciendo Paul. Talk about sports. Talk about the weather.
10:43
There's a lot of good things, actually, that you could talk about. But these things are not evangelism.
10:54
You actually could help people with prudent advice about their marriages.
11:06
Managing finances. Raising children.
11:13
How to grow a good crop. And there are situations where those are good.
11:22
Y hay situaciones donde esas son buenas. And much of that falls under pastoral ministry.
11:31
But it's not doing the work of an evangelist without the content of the gospel.
11:43
Paul tells Timothy, remember Jesus Christ, Pablo dice a Timoteo, recuerda a Jesucristo.
11:49
As preached in my gospel. The descendant of David. Paul tells the
11:57
Galatians, there's only one gospel. Paul tells the
12:04
Corinthians, the gospel is of first importance. We could really belabor this point.
12:13
Podemos pegar mucho este punto. But the reality is, without communicating the gospel, you're not doing evangelism.
12:29
So a pastor may say, I like to go out in the community and invite people to church.
12:39
And okay, it's not that that's bad. That's not evangelism.
12:47
It's not doing the work of an evangelist. And then the second thing, so the content.
12:57
And then the proclamation. Y después la proclamación. So it's not evangelism without proclaiming this gospel.
13:05
In other words, I know some pastors who say, well,
13:14
I just wanna get involved in my community. And I just want to demonstrate by my life what a
13:22
Christian looks like.
13:28
I wanna volunteer. Quiero ser voluntario. I'll help pick up trash. Ayuda a recoger basura.
13:35
I'll go pass out food or pass out meals.
13:44
I'll do good things in the community. People will see these things.
13:50
La gente van a ver esas cosas. And they'll become Christians. Jesus does say in the
13:57
Sermon on the Mount that by our good works, people will glorify our
14:04
Father who is in heaven. And so we don't dismiss good works.
14:15
But this is not evangelism. To do the work of an evangelism, you must have the content.
14:22
And you must have the proclamation.
14:28
Y tienes que tener la proclamación. We see the angels in Luke 2.
14:35
Vemos los ángeles en Lucas 2. Doing the work of evangelists. Haciendo la obra de evangelistas.
14:42
We bring you good news, they say to the shepherds. Proclamamos buena noticia, dicen los pastores.
14:50
What would it have looked like if the angels just showed up?
14:59
They displayed their beauty before the shepherds.
15:07
But they didn't proclaim anything. No proclamaron nada. It wouldn't have been evangelism.
15:13
No será evangelismo. The shepherds wouldn't have known. Los pastores no reconocerán.
15:18
And Luke 2 obviously would have been completely different. Lucas 2 será muy diferente. So you have to have the content.
15:26
You have to have the gospel. Tienes que tener contenido. Tienes que tener evangelio. And you have to have the proclamation.
15:32
Tienes que tener proclamación. And let me add one more thing with this. Déjame añadir una cosa más con esto.
15:39
Within the proclamation, we are calling sinners to repent and believe the gospel.
15:50
What I mean is, an evangelist does not merely give the facts of the gospel. ¿Qué quiere decir?
15:56
The facts of the gospel in summation.
16:02
Los hechos de evangelio en su suma. Jesus is the Son of God. Jesús es el
16:08
Hijo de Dios. Jesus was born of the Virgin Mary. Jesús fue nacido de Virgen María.
16:13
Jesus fulfilled all righteousness. Jesús cumplió toda justicia. Jesus died on the cross for sinners.
16:20
Jesús murió en la cruz por pecadores. And Jesus rose again from the grave.
16:27
That is a small summary of the gospel. Ese es un resumen pequeño de evangelio.
16:34
But it doesn't confront sinners. Pero no confronta pecadores. And sinners need to know they must repent and believe the gospel.
16:42
They stand condemned under the law.
16:48
Están condenados bajo la ley. They stand condemned under the judgment of God.
16:54
Están condenados bajo la juicia de Dios. All right, let's move on. Number three. Sigamos a numero tres.
17:00
The pastor needs to understand what an evangelist is.
17:08
What an evangelist does. Que hace un evangelista. And he needs to understand thirdly, the intentional leadership necessary in evangelism.
17:17
Intentional leadership.
17:25
El liderazgo intencional. There are certain things in the Christian life that we just don't fall into.
17:31
You don't fall into just praying better.
17:38
No solo empiezas a orar mejor. It takes intention. Requiere intención.
17:45
It takes work. Requiere trabajo. Paul says here with evangelism.
17:51
Háblese aquí en el evangelismo. Do the work of an evangelist.
17:56
Hace la obra de evangelista. The Greek word, energo. La palabra en griego, energo.
18:04
And I don't know the Spanish word, brother, but in English, it's easy to hear the word energy. We get the word energy from that word.
18:12
18:18
Energo, energía. And so I know we're not, I'm not trying to read back into this word.
18:26
No estoy tratando de poner algo atrás de esa palabra. But just to illustrate here that this word that Paul is using.
18:34
It requires activity.
18:40
Requiere actividad. It requires energy. Requiere energía.
18:46
Okay, do the work of an evangelist. Háblese la obra de evangelista.
18:52
This is not something the pastor is gonna fall into. Este no es algo que el pastor va a caer en.
18:58
It is actually something that must be kept on the forefront of our minds.
19:06
I recognize that some pastors have a better gifting here.
19:16
I think the
19:22
Lord gives us sometimes certain personality traits.
19:35
There are certain pastors who always want to be around people.
19:43
And they do an excellent job of communicating the gospel.
19:49
There are other pastors who, they don't want to be around people.
19:55
But, I mean, God still uses, they want to be isolated and to study. Ellos quieren estar aislados y estudiar.
20:02
But regardless what your personality trait may be.
20:08
No importando tu personalidad. Paul tells
20:13
Timothy that he must do this work.
20:19
It takes activity. Requiere actividad. It takes energy. Requiere energía.
20:25
It takes intentionality. Requiere intención. I want to illustrate this a little further in Luke chapter 8.
20:35
In Luke chapter 8, let me double check.
20:44
I think it's in verse 1. Luke chapter 8, verse 1. Lucas 8, versículo 1.
20:52
Wait, hold on just a second. Yeah, Luke chapter 8, verse 1.
20:58
Lucas 8, 1. Dice, Aconteció después que
21:08
21:16
Dios y los doce con él. So this is the model of our
21:22
Lord. Ese es el modelo de nuestro Señor. Jesus was in many respects an evangelist.
21:28
Jesús en muchas maneras era evangelista. He is going through the cities and the villages, proclaiming and bringing the good news of the kingdom.
21:42
Proclamando y trayendo el evangelio del reino. And this passage is so familiar that we don't have to read it.
21:52
But immediately after this, he tells the parable of the sower.
21:59
And you think about how much work the sower puts in.
22:08
22:17
How many seeds he's sowing. Cuántas semillas está sembrando. And he's laboring and laboring and laboring.
22:25
Está trabajando, trabajando, trabajando. And really, if you think about all the seed that he scatters.
22:32
The percentage of fruit seems to be small.
22:40
La porcentaje de fruto parece pequeño. Some people are hearing the gospel and Satan immediately takes it away.
22:48
There's two groups of people that you get excited about.
22:54
They hear the gospel, they seem to be responding. Escuche el evangelio, parece que están respondiendo.
23:02
One group has no root. Un grupo no tiene raíces. And persecution drives them away.
23:09
La persecución los lleva. And then the other group, the cares of the world, chokes out the gospel.
23:17
But you keep laboring and laboring.
23:23
And laboring. Siguen trabajando y trabajando y trabajando. And you will feel the temptation.
23:30
Y se siente la tentación. Why am I doing this? ¿Por qué estoy haciendo esto? Why am I going to talk to this person about Christ?
23:38
Why am I going to preach here on the street corner?
23:45
Why am I going to pass out this tract? ¿Por qué voy a repartir este proyecto? Why am
23:51
I going to visit these people in their home?
23:59
Last spring, Brother Randall came to our church. El último primavera, hermano
24:05
Randall vino a nuestra iglesia. Well, spring 2022. En 2022.
24:12
And he preached a message that has continued to stick with me. Predicó un mensaje que me sigue conmigo.
24:20
It was from Ecclesiastes 11. Era de Ecclesiastes 11. Cast your bread upon many waters.
24:26
Tire tu pan sobre muchos aguas. And he said this statement that stuck with me and I hope will stick with you.
24:33
Very simple statement.
24:38
Una frase muy simple. Sow nothing, reap nothing.
24:43
Siembres nada, cosechas nada. If you don't sow the seed.
24:50
Si no siembras la semilla. You will see no fruit. La semilla. No vas a ver fruta.
24:57
Paul says in Romans 10, faith comes by hearing.
25:03
Hearing by the word of God. Y oír por la palabra de Dios. And how are the people going to hear without a preacher?
25:11
¿Cómo van a escuchar sin un predicador? God has given each one of you and us.
25:16
God has given all of us. Dios nos ha dado todos. To our cities. A nuestras ciudades.
25:23
To our towns. A nuestros pueblos. To our villages. A nuestras comunidades.
25:30
I often say this when I'm preaching in Perryville.
25:38
Perryville. How much must God love Perryville? ¿Cuánto Dios tiene que amar
25:43
Perryville? To send the gospel. A mandar el evangelio. The gospel is here in Perryville.
25:50
El evangelio está aquí en Perryville. It's being proclaimed. Está siendo proclamado.
25:56
It's being shared. Está siendo compartido. The gospel is in Pochote, and Cordova, and Tuxla, and Tabasco, on and on and on.
26:07
26:13
God has given your church. Dios ha dado tu iglesia. In your city, in your area.
26:21
En tu ciudad, en tu área. In part to do this work. En parte a hacer esta obra.
26:28
To proclaim this message. A proclamar este mensaje.
26:33
And then you remember in the parable of the sower. Y recuerdas en la parable del sembrador.
26:40
There will be those who receive the gospel. Que van a recibir evangelio.
26:47
By the grace of God. Por la gracia de Dios. You remember God telling Paul, I have many people in this city.
26:54
And two things keep me focused on evangelism in Perryville.
27:02
One, if not a single soul comes to Christ.
27:12
Christ is worthy to be proclaimed. His gospel is worthy to be preached.
27:22
That's my first and primary motivation. But the second
27:27
I think is important. I just have to believe that God has people in this city.
27:36
Dios tiene gente en esta ciudad. And by the preaching of the gospel, he's going to call them to his son.
27:42
He's going to forgive them of their sins.
27:48
Va a perdonarlos de sus pecados. And he's going to save them from his wrath to come.
27:53
But as a pastor, if I'm not intentional in this.
27:59
Neither will the church be.
28:05
Tampoco la iglesia será. It's very rare to have people in the church.
28:12
Excited about evangelism. Animado de evangelismo. When the pastor is not leading from the front.
28:19
What that looks like.
28:25
Como se ve eso. Is preaching about evangelism. Predicando sobre evangelismo.
28:31
When it comes up in the text. Cuando viene en el texto. Emphasize it, preach evangelism.
28:38
Empatizarlo, predicarse evangelio. Praying for lost people in your community.
28:45
Corrando por gente perdida en tu comunidad. But also actually doing evangelism.
28:52
Pero también haciendo evangelismo. And taking your people with you door to door. Llevando a la gente contigo puerta a puerta.
29:00
Taking your people with you to events like Brother Randall goes to.
29:07
Va a Irmán Randall. Taking your people to see you preach on the street.
29:14
This also helps them. We have some brothers in our church who are not preachers.
29:22
But they go with us. Pero van con nosotros.
29:28
They support us. Nos apoyan. They hold up signs. Mantienen, garan litreras.
29:36
They pass out tracts. Reparten folletos. And they're excited about evangelism.
29:42
Están emocionados de evangelismo. Because they see their pastors excited about evangelism.
29:47
Ven sus pastores animados de evangelismo. The fourth thing,
29:52
I'll just make a real brief comment.
29:59
And that is, we don't need to just do the work of an evangelist.
30:05
We need to be willing to train others.
30:12
Debemos estar puestos a entrenar otros. So in 2 Timothy 2.
30:17
En 2 Timothy 2. Verse 2. 2 Timothy 2, 2 dice.
30:24
30:37
If Timothy is to teach others what Paul has taught him.
30:42
This includes the work of evangelism.
30:49
Esto incluye la obra de evangelismo. Sometimes as a pastor, you need to be okay with your people doing evangelism.
30:59
While you have to attend to another pressing manner of ministry.
31:08
If you, do you remember what
31:14
Moses' father -in -law told him? ¿Recuerdas lo que el suegro de
31:19
Moises le dijo? You're doing all this all day, judging the people.
31:25
You're going to wear yourself out. Vas a cansarte.
31:31
So part of your responsibility is not only to lead from the front in evangelism.
31:36
31:43
But also to train other men in your church to do evangelism.
31:48
And there will be times, and you shouldn't feel bad about it, there will be times they go and do evangelism.
31:57
And you're doing something else. Y tú estás haciendo otra cosa.
32:04

Uh -huh. Antes que lleguemos a preguntas, quiero enseñarles algo.
32:23

34:14
Thanks for listening to that. That concludes the teaching.
34:21

34:30
