You are listening to the podcast of Recast Church in Mattawan, Michigan. Good morning,
00:25
Recast. I'm Greg Schrock. I'm one of the elders here. And as you know, our
00:31
Pastor Don Filsek and the Uganda team are traveling back later this afternoon, sometime close to 4 p .m.
00:37
our time. They'll be making their way back. And here at Recast, we'd like to welcome all of you back.
00:44
And if those of you who are visiting today are new attenders, welcome as well.
00:50
We'd like to welcome you if you need to to step up and grab a donut and grab some coffee or some juice.
00:56
We're blessed at Recast to have men here gifted to be able to preach the
01:02
Word of God. And in Don's absence, we're blessed today to have Bill Smith back with us, bringing us a message from the
01:09
Word of God. Bill is a former elder here at Recast. And Bill also works with Youth for Christ.
01:16
So welcome, Bill Smith. Good morning.
01:26
Welcome to our Palm Sunday service. You know,
01:32
I was thinking about Palm Sunday this morning and palm branches end up in my message.
01:39
And this thought occurred to me. I wonder how many times someone had just happened to show up in church on Palm Sunday and didn't know, you know, what that meant.
01:51
I didn't know what that meant when I was a kid growing up. And, you know, it was announced that it's
01:56
Palm Sunday and that, you know, oh, wow, they're going to read our poems today. You know, what does that exactly mean?
02:04
So Palm Sunday is a celebration of Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem as he rode upon that donkey cult to bring us salvation.
02:16
So Jesus was crucified on a Friday. Palm Sunday was the
02:23
Sunday before he was crucified. This morning,
02:30
I just I want to start out with a question. And the question is this, who is your king?
02:43
Who is your king now? You know, if you're not used to maybe church or coming, you know, the word of God, your mind might go to, well, we don't have a king in this country, right?
03:01
We have a president. And certainly he's not my king. OK, he's our president.
03:07
Right. OK, but but who is your king? If you were somewhere honest, you would say,
03:17
I don't I don't have a king. If others were honest, they might say, well, to be honestly, money is my king, that's that's first thing in my life.
03:30
Or perhaps pleasure is my king. I was there at one point in my life where I was just seeking happiness and pleasure.
03:42
That's a very disappointing king to have. Others might say, well, to be really honest,
03:51
I'm king of my own life. Nobody rules over me. I call my own shots.
03:58
I lived that way once, too, and it did not turn out well at all. But if you believe in Jesus, most likely you would say
04:09
Jesus is my king, right? King Jesus.
04:16
But then I want you to think about what would that really look like for you in your life for Jesus to truly be your king?
04:27
Would there be implications upon your life? Is Jesus king?
04:34
I guess would be a really important question. And even though our text this morning is in Luke, I want to actually start out in John this morning by way of introduction.
04:45
And I want Jesus to answer this question for us. Is Jesus king?
04:51
So go ahead and grab your Bibles and turn or your devices, open it up to John 18.
04:58
If you're here this morning and you don't have the Bible on your phone or you don't have a
05:03
Bible with you, we would love for you to be able to follow along in a copy of God's Word. So Mike has
05:09
Bibles. If you would like a Bible to follow along with me this morning, could you just raise your hand and let
05:15
Mike know, and he'll bring those around. And also you're welcome to keep that Bible if you need it.
05:21
We would love for you to have a copy of God's Word. Pray with me as we read this scripture, and let's ask
05:30
God to come and meet with us and speak to us this morning. Holy Father, just thank you so much that you love us.
05:38
Thank you that you want to speak into our lives today. And Father, we want to be able to listen and hear from your
05:46
Spirit. We want to walk out of here today, Father, being drawn closer to you, being challenged by you,
05:54
Father, you teaching us. And so we're asking this morning that your
05:59
Holy Spirit would be our teacher, that you would give us understanding of your Word. Father, I pray for every individual here this morning that you would encourage them, that you would speak to them,
06:10
Father, that we would walk out of here this morning blessed in wanting to know you in deeper ways.
06:17
We all pray this and ask this in Jesus' holy name. Amen. All right, so the context of this is that Jesus had been arrested on Thursday night of the
06:30
Passion Week. He had faced the Sanhedrin, the high priest of his day, and then they took him to Pontius Pilate because they did not have the authority to execute
06:42
Jesus, and that's what they were looking to do. They wanted him dead. And so they bring him to Pontius Pilate early on that Friday morning, and Pontius Pilate begins to examine
06:55
Jesus. And so we come to verse 33 in John 18 with Pilate and Jesus together.
07:05
Verse 33, so Pilate entered in his headquarters again and called
07:11
Jesus and said to him, are you the king of the Jews? Jesus answered, do you say this of your own accord or did others say it to you about me?
07:22
Pilate answered, am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered you over to me.
07:29
What have you done? Jesus answered, my kingdom is not of this world.
07:37
If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting that I might not be delivered over to the
07:44
Jews, but my kingdom is not from the world. Then Pilate said to him, so you are a king?
07:50
Jesus answered, you say that I am a king? For this purpose I was born and for this purpose
07:57
I came into the world to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.
08:05
And so from Jesus' own words he declares to be a king. This morning on Palm Sunday, we're going to see the king coming into Jerusalem to set captives free.
08:21
We're going to see the king coming in to purchase slaves out of the slavery of sin with the payment of his own precious blood.
08:32
And I want to say that yes, Jesus is the king. In Revelation 19, 16, he is called king of kings and lord of lords.
08:41
And you see him coming back a second time with a conquering army, and then his kingdom will prevail.
08:48
There will be no rival kingdoms at that time. But Jesus didn't come into Jerusalem that morning with a conquering army, but he comes humbly riding upon a donkey.
09:03
He comes to give his life as a sacrifice for the sins of the world.
09:10
That's why he marched into Jerusalem on that Palm Sunday. And I just want to say at the very outset that he is worthy to be our king.
09:20
He is worthy of our worship and our allegiance, of our obedience.
09:27
He is worthy of our entire lives, this King Jesus. And I hope my prayer this morning as we go through the story of Palm Sunday, that you'll see the beauty of the king.
09:42
And that you'll be stirred to go deeper in your allegiance to this king of kings and lord of lords.
09:50
So I'm going to pray as the band comes, and we'll have some time in worship. And if you know that Jesus is worthy, then worship him in this worship time.
10:01
Okay, let's pray. Lord Jesus, thank you that you are king of kings and lord of lords, that you came humbly to this earth for us as Emmanuel, that you were
10:16
God with us in the flesh, that you conquered sin and conquered death, and now you sit upon the throne of God as our king of kings and lord of lords.
10:28
Thank you now for this time of music and worship, and we just pray that your spirit would be moving in our hearts as we sing these songs, and that even through these songs we would see more of your beauty and glory.
10:44
We love you, and thank you so much for your love for us today in your holy name.
10:50
Amen. All right, well, I would like to thank you band for that awesome worship time.
10:57
Cheryl told me when I came back over where we're sitting, she said, you know, he was already standing behind you.
11:05
You know, I thought there would be a band back there, but you know, you would think when I walked up here, I would notice there weren't keyboards or drums.
11:13
We just had the sweet psalmist of David here. Thank you. That was beautiful.
11:21
Before I start with my message, I just want to give a brief Youth for Christ update.
11:27
As you guys, most of you know, I serve as a missionary with Kalamazoo Youth for Christ, and a while ago
11:36
I asked that y 'all would be praying about a building. We're looking for a new ministry center.
11:42
It's been incredible to see our staff grow, and it needs to keep growing because there are literally thousands and thousands and thousands of students in the
11:52
Kalamazoo area who are not learning the story of Jesus, and when you don't know the story of Jesus, you're open for anything.
12:00
You know, when you don't know the king, something's going to rule your life, and most likely it's not going to be good.
12:08
Well, we have a couple buildings that we're exploring, and we found one that is a really, really good prospect, so we're kind of doing our research to make sure that it's going to be all that we need, and just praying that God will give us a building where we can have a youth center, and young people from the neighborhoods can come in and have a safe place.
12:35
Exciting things are happening at Youth for Christ. I don't know, it was three or four weeks ago, some of you got to meet
12:41
Corey, who came and visited one Sunday morning with me. He's a young man that I met in the juvenile home who has given his heart to the king, to Christ, and I would love for you to come on April 21st.
12:59
Youth for Christ is having a breakfast at the Radisson Plaza. Free breakfast, come on now, and it's from 8 a .m.
13:06
to 9 a .m., and we are always done right at nine. We've been doing these for about seven, eight years now.
13:12
We're going to have some teenagers there sharing their stories, and part of the presentation is we always do a video with some students that we've been working with from different areas, and this
13:25
Tuesday we did a video shoot with Corey at the juvenile home, and the superintendent of the juvenile home spoke on behalf of Youth for Christ, but Corey shared his heart, and it's just so powerful what
13:40
God has done in his life, and so you would get to hear Corey's story too. So Joanne and Don Cole are table hosts for us, and they still have room at their table, and we have room for the event, so if anybody would like to come and join us, please let
14:00
Don and Joanne know, or let myself know, and we'll get you signed up for it. That's Friday morning,
14:06
April 21st. Okay, I would love for you to to come and hear what's going on. So Don asked me months ago if I would be willing to do the teaching this morning, and I love the
14:22
Word of God, and I love to teach His Word, and you know, this isn't my normal setting.
14:28
Normally I'm with teens, even on Sunday mornings at the juvenile home, Lakeside Academy. That's my comfort zone, you know.
14:36
Preaching in your home church is a little different experience, but I do love it because we can go deeper than I could go with the young people that I work with, and I'm always blessed way more just by preparing,
14:50
I'm sure, than what you are blessed by as far as hearing it. But you know, as I was studying through this and thinking about Jesus being my
14:59
King, I had to ask myself, is my life showing that Jesus is my
15:06
King? Do I, am I living like a citizen of heaven here on this earth, surrounded by lost people who are hurting, and who are in darkness, and who are believing lies, and they need to hear the truth of Jesus the
15:22
King? And am I am I walking worthy of this King? Is my life showing that He is my
15:30
King of Kings? And you know, as we read Jesus' story, we see how beautiful He is, and we see the extreme price that He paid for our sins as we come into Easter, thinking of His suffering.
15:47
As we see Him marching, I correct myself, riding on a donkey's colt coming into Jerusalem on that Sunday morning before His crucifixion, we see more of Jesus' beauty and glory.
16:05
And I want to look at this story, so if you would turn with me this morning to Luke chapter 19.
16:11
This story is actually in all four Gospels, and I went through and I read all four of accounts, and that's the beautiful thing about the four
16:20
Gospels, is each writer sheds a different light on what happened. And you see more, it's like taking that diamond and holding it up and turning it and seeing the different facets of it.
16:32
And as we look at all four Gospels, we see more and more of the beauty of Jesus.
16:39
So we're going to pick up his story in Luke 19, starting in verse 28.
16:46
Follow along with me as I the text. And when He had said these things,
16:52
He went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. When He drew near to Bethphage and Bethany at the mount that is called
17:00
Olivet, He sent two of His disciples, saying, Go into the village in front of you, where on entering you will find a colt tied on which no one has ever sat.
17:11
Untie it and bring it here. If anyone asks you, why are you untying it? You shall say this, the
17:17
Lord has need of it. So those who were sent went away and found it just as He had told them.
17:24
And as they were untying the colt, its owner said to them, why are you untying the colt?
17:29
And they said, the Lord has need of it. And they brought it to Jesus and throwing their cloaks on the colt, they set
17:37
Jesus on it. And as He rode along, they spread their cloaks on the road. As He was drawing near, already on the way down the
17:46
Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen.
17:56
Saying, Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord. Peace in heaven and glory in the highest.
18:04
And some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Him, Teacher, rebuke your disciples. He answered,
18:10
I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out. And when
18:15
He drew near and He saw the city, He wept over it, saying, Would that you, even you, had known on this day the things that make for your peace, but now they are hidden from your eyes.
18:28
For the days will come upon you when your enemies will set up a barricade around you and surround you and hem you in on every side and tear you down to the ground, you and your children within you, and they will not leave one stone upon another in you because you did not know this time of your visitation.
18:52
Here comes Jesus to sacrifice His life for us.
19:00
For three years He had been preaching this message. Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
19:08
Everywhere He went, He was calling people to turn from their own self -centered ways and to turn to the
19:15
King and prepare themselves for His kingdom. And now
19:20
He was coming to pay the ultimate price, to sacrifice His life, to shed
19:26
His blood, to make a way for us to be in His kingdom forever.
19:35
It's beyond our imagination what that means. The great adventure of passing out of this life into the next.
19:47
We talked about that last week, but it says in Corinthians it's beyond our imagination.
19:53
This place that Jesus has paid for us. You know, I think of the story and I think of Jesus coming into Jerusalem knowing fully well what
20:03
He faced. Look at chapter 18 of Luke and verses 31 and 33.
20:08
On their way to Jerusalem, Jesus pulled the 12 disciples aside, verse 31, and He said this.
20:17
He said, See, we are going up to Jerusalem and everything that is written about the Son of Man by the prophets will be accomplished.
20:24
For He will be delivered over to the Gentiles and will be mocked and shamefully treated and spit upon.
20:32
And after flogging Him, they will kill Him and on the third day He will rise.
20:38
So Jesus knew fully well what was ahead of Him. He didn't have to march into Jerusalem.
20:46
He could have gone the other way, but He came to that Mount Moriah. I don't know if that name,
20:53
Mount Moriah, rings a bell to you or not, but that is what the mountain that Jerusalem was built on was called
21:00
Mount Moriah. We're going to come back to that in just a few moments.
21:06
This little town, Bethpage, that they were coming to, this was just a suburb of Jerusalem.
21:15
In fact, it was outside of the walls of Jerusalem, but it was considered part of Jerusalem.
21:21
It was between Bethany and the city of Jerusalem. The name means House of Figs.
21:28
Look at verse 30 with me as we now begin to explore this story in chapter 19.
21:36
So He's coming near and this is what He instructs His disciples, two of His disciples.
21:42
He says, Go into the village in front of you, where on entering you will find a colt tied on which no one has ever sat.
21:51
Untie it and bring it here. Think about the two disciples that were told to do this.
22:01
First of all, why did Jesus even want a donkey? He normally didn't.
22:07
He walked everywhere that He went. And so we have to ask ourselves, what's up with the donkey?
22:15
Keep your finger here in Luke and look at this prophecy with me in Zechariah chapter 9 verse 9.
22:30
So in the Old Testament we find so many prophecies of this Messiah King, who all through scripture from Genesis all the way to Malachi, His coming was promised.
22:42
And so the Jews were looking for the Messiah. And here's one of those prophecies that we find in Zechariah.
22:49
It says, Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem!
22:57
Behold, your King is coming to you, righteous and having salvation. He is humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
23:10
Why the donkey? It's right here. This would demonstrate to the whole world that Jesus was the
23:17
Messiah King. It was in fulfillment of this prophecy. Everything that the
23:24
Word said the Messiah would do, Jesus did. This was
23:29
Jesus claiming His kingdom that He was about to purchase with His own blood. He comes not in wrath to take a vengeance, but in mercy to bring salvation.
23:43
I was reading some commentaries as I was studying this out, and I liked what the pulpit commentary said about this.
23:53
And here's a quote. It says, He comes to His royal sacred city in the strange guise foreshadowed by Zechariah as Prince of Peace, not with chariot and horse, but meekly riding on a donkey's colt, claiming to a dominion from sea to sea, from the river to the ends of the earth.
24:16
I like that. Jesus coming to claim
24:21
His kingdom, coming to claim His throne. Notice, let's flip flip back to Luke with me now.
24:36
And in verse 30, it kind of described what kind of donkey Jesus needed.
24:43
And it was a colt. So it was a, you know, if it was horse, we, you know, well, you know, it wasn't a full -grown donkey, right?
24:51
Okay? And no one had ever ridden on it. And why was that significant? Because the
24:58
Jews regarded animals that had never been ridden on as especially suited for sacred purposes.
25:05
So that was the significance of this colt never have been ridden on. And so now let's come back to these two disciples that are sent on this crazy errand, okay?
25:17
So Jesus tells them to, you know, to go and get this donkey.
25:25
I wonder what's going through their mind, you know. Oh, we're going to prison for sure.
25:33
You know what they do to donkey thieves? You know, this is crazy. This would be like someone telling you this morning, all right,
25:43
Greg, I want you to walk down the front street, and you're going to find a silver
25:49
Mustang there, a brand new one, and the keys are in it, okay? I want you to get in it. And if anybody asks you what you're doing, just tell them the
25:56
Lord needs it, and then bring it back here to me, okay? So would you do that?
26:04
Only if Jesus was clearly telling you, you might do that, you know? That would be kind of crazy, wouldn't it?
26:15
Would you do it, if Jesus asked you to do something like this? I'm sure they were nervous as they were walking up there.
26:24
This donkey, I'm still on the donkey, this donkey reminds me of another donkey, okay?
26:30
If you think back in the Bible, in fact, I want you to see this other donkey, okay?
26:36
So we're going to go to Genesis chapter 22. If you turn there with me, Genesis chapter 22.
26:51
This is 2 ,000 years before Jesus got on this donkey cult and rode into Jerusalem.
26:59
This is 2 ,000 years prior. And we find Abraham and God is moving in Abraham's life, and you know the story, he had told
27:07
Abraham to go to a place that he would show him that he was going to make a nation out of Abraham, who was a true devoted follower of the true
27:16
God. And so Abraham, after some time, he finally has the promised son
27:21
Isaac, and one day God comes to Abraham and he tells him in verse 1 of chapter 22, after these things
27:31
God tested Abraham and said to him, Abraham, and he said, here I am.
27:37
He said, take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah and offer him there as a burnt offering on the mountains on which
27:49
I tell you. So Abraham rose early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took his two young men with him and his son
28:00
Isaac. He cut the wood for the burnt offering and arose and went to the place which
28:05
God had told him to. He came to the very mountain that Jerusalem was built on.
28:12
He was told to go to Moriah and God showed him the mountain where he was to offer this sacrifice.
28:22
And Abraham thought it was going to be his own son. Hebrews tells us that Abraham had such faith that he believed that God would even raise
28:34
Isaac up from the dead if that was to happen. So Abraham obeyed
28:40
God and it says he saddled his donkey and took two servants. You see some parallels there?
28:46
Two disciples go and get the donkey. I picture Isaac as a fairly young boy. Probably he was the one who rode on the donkey.
28:55
He was going to be that sacrifice. And in these words, take your son, your only son, whom you love.
29:03
Doesn't that remind us of, for God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son?
29:10
What a beautiful parallel. Of course we know the story God all along did not intend
29:17
Abraham to sacrifice his own son, but God was showing us in the whole world he was pointing to the ultimate sacrifice that was to come.
29:28
But here in verse 13, God has a substitute sacrifice for Isaac.
29:34
Verse 13, Abraham lifted his eyes and looked and behold behind him was a ram caught in the thicket by his horns.
29:41
And Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son.
29:48
So Abraham was obeying God and the angel of God stopped him and showed him this ram.
29:55
I think of the Lamb of God and even the thorns in this picture. The ram was caught in the thorns.
30:01
Thorns became a symbol of the curse, right? When Adam and Eve disobeyed
30:08
God, and God was sharing the consequences of that, he said that the earth would produce thorns.
30:16
Remember what they crushed down on Jesus' head? A crown of thorns. You see, that's the powerful love of God.
30:27
You know, I care about my church family, but would I sacrifice my son for you?
30:34
I don't think I would be able to do that, nor would you, your child. But God sent his son
30:42
Jesus as the amazing declaration of the amazing love of God.
30:49
He sent his son and Jesus, he became that substitute, and he rode on that donkey up Mount Moriah to be sacrificed.
30:59
Turn with me back to our story in Luke. I had never made that connection before, and it was just as I was studying that, and I was thinking about this donkey,
31:12
I remembered the donkey in that story. Verse 31,
31:18
I want to look at that for a minute, back to Luke 19. So they're told to go and get this donkey and untie it.
31:26
Jesus gives them further instruction. If anyone asks you, why are you untying it?
31:32
You shall say this, the Lord has need of it. Jesus knew that donkey would be there.
31:40
He hadn't pre -arranged this with anyone. He knew it was waiting. Jesus is the omniscient one.
31:47
He's the all -knowing one. He knew that the disciples would be challenged in their errand, and even told them what to do when the people told them, hey, what are you doing?
31:57
You can't take that. I mean, that's like stealing a car. I mean, that was their transportation of the day.
32:03
Donkeys were valuable. He knew what the outcome would be. He knows what our day will be.
32:12
He knows what lies ahead for our future, and he is there, and he is willing and ready to help us through whatever lies ahead.
32:21
He is the all -knowing one. He didn't say, go and tell
32:27
Amos, I need to borrow your donkey and see if it's okay. He just told them, go and get that donkey that's waiting, and if they ask, just tell them,
32:38
I need it. You see his sovereignty orchestrating this errand.
32:48
You know, I was thinking examples in my own life of how God has worked things through.
32:56
It was about 30 years, going on 31 years ago, someone asked me to consider coming and serving at Youth for Christ, and I was in the heating trade, and my wife was a stay -at -home mom, and our oldest daughter was born, and I had the opportunity.
33:17
My boss was training me to take over his company, and he was going to sell me his company, and it was a good business, and that's what
33:26
I was going to do, and God called me to be a missionary at Youth for Christ, reaching out to troubled kids, and I knew that it meant raising support, and when
33:38
I, as God made it clear that I should do this,
33:43
I started thinking of all the implications, and I thought, wow,
33:49
I have to raise my entire salary. I have to raise funds for training.
33:54
I have to raise funds for administrative costs. I have to raise funds for ministry, and this figure that they had thrown out to me seemed so daunting at the time, and I thought,
34:07
God, how you're going to have to do this, and God met our needs, and He raised up our support, and He's kept me these 30 years.
34:21
He's protected me and my family these 30 years of being in ministry at Youth for Christ, and just providing for us in amazing ways.
34:32
I remember somebody had donated a Suburban to Youth for Christ, and I ended up with that Suburban, and eventually it needed new tires, and the tires were like $200 apiece, and I, like, when
34:43
I got that vehicle, I had, wasn't thinking, like, you know, it's expensive to put tires on this vehicle, and I said,
34:50
Lord, you know, we don't have the money for tires, and they were getting lower and lower. Winter was coming. I just said,
34:55
Father, either provide tires for this or the funds, and shortly after I prayed that, another family from our school that our kids were going to, she said, you know,
35:05
I know you drive a Suburban, and, you know, this is going to kind of sound kind of weird, but my husband is a safety freak, and he buys new tires when he doesn't need them.
35:17
The tires are always still good, and he still wants to get new tires, and this was some family that had some resources, and she said, these tires are great.
35:25
You can have them if you want them, and I just laughed, and I said, oh, thank you. I did, you know, I asked the father for some new tires for my
35:32
Suburban. I, she brought them over. I had them mounted on that Suburban, and I drove that vehicle for, like, three more years on those tires.
35:40
When I sold the car, the tires were still on it, but just God's provision of how
35:46
He takes care of us when He sends us on those errands. Matthew Henry said this.
35:53
He said, what Christ sets us to do, He will bear us out in the doing of, and furnishes us with answers to objections we may be assaulted with.
36:04
Like, I'm sure you've been, God has whispered something for you to do, and then all of a sudden, those objections come up, you know.
36:11
We just need to be obedient. God told these disciples to do it, and they obeyed, and I, you know, as I was thinking of this,
36:21
I just wrote this statement down. Christ commands must be, must not be disputed, but obeyed.
36:27
What He commands, He gives the strength, skill, and the means to do it.
36:33
So, anything He tells us to do, we can count on Him for the strength, and the resources, and the skill to do it, because we can't do it on our own.
36:47
So they head over there. Look at verse 33. We'll see how this went. And as they were untying the colt, sure enough, its owner said to them, why are you untying the colt?
36:58
And they said, the Lord has need of it. And they brought it to Jesus, throwing their cloaks on the colt.
37:05
They said, Jesus on it. What Jesus speaks comes to pass.
37:13
What He promises will be fulfilled. I like this verse from 2nd Corinthians 1 20.
37:19
For all the promises of God find their yes in Him. That is why it is through Him that we utter our amen to God for His glory.
37:33
He always keeps His promises. He is so faithful and so true. Now think about the owner of this donkey for a minute.
37:44
You know, Jesus didn't send them, you know, a message ahead like, I'm gonna need to borrow your donkey, and I promise
37:50
I'll give it back when we're done. He's just like, why are you untying my colt?
37:56
And they say, the Lord needs it. And He lets them take it. He was apparently someone who had a heart for God.
38:08
Because when someone presented a need for the kingdom of God, He was willing, wasn't
38:14
He? I would say He had a listening ear to the Spirit. Because at that point, even though Jesus was working in His heart to be able to release that,
38:26
He still had a free will. And He could have said, no, I can't do that.
38:33
But He didn't. He listened to the Spirit. He was willing to use what
38:38
He had for the kingdom of God. He had a proper perspective of His possessions.
38:46
Like He knew that all God had given Him were God's anyway. I think that's how this man must have saw what
38:53
He had. Like, oh, you need to borrow my car? I can help you with that.
39:02
I've had people do that for me when I've been in a pinch. His willingness to give helped fulfill the will and plan of God.
39:12
I think this guy is a pretty good example in this story. Now I want to talk about the donkey a little bit more, okay?
39:23
Come back to that donkey. We know that he was a colt, a young donkey.
39:29
And we know from verse 30 that no one had ever ridden on this donkey before. When you sit on a horse that's never been ridden, guess what that horse is going to do?
39:42
He is going to buck you off, okay? He does not want you. Do you think a donkey is any different?
39:48
And from what I've heard, donkeys are even more stubborn and difficult, okay? Here's a donkey who had never been ridden before.
39:56
And we find Jesus sitting on this donkey, and this donkey is as calm as can be.
40:04
Jesus has power even over the beast, okay? He can change that beast that is in me.
40:13
He can change the nature, our natures. He can transform us. He is so powerful that for him to calm this donkey was nothing.
40:26
You know, I had all my notes prepared, and I had some free time yesterday afternoon, and I was studying from Colossians, and I was following along in this commentary by John Phillips.
40:41
And I read this, and it blessed me so much, and it even mentions the donkey. And this is a teaching from Colossians, and so I just have to read it because I think it's powerful.
40:53
He's talking about Jesus. He controls the universe just as he did when he lived on earth.
41:01
The forces of nature owned his presence and his power. Water blushed into wine when he looked at it.
41:09
Loaves and fishes multiplied in his hands. Raging seas hushed to rest at his command.
41:17
Howling winds hushed to sleep. At his will, rolling waves became a pavement beneath his feet.
41:24
An unbroken colt submitted instantly to his touch. Fishes hurled themselves into Peter's net at the sound of his voice.
41:34
A glance from him, and instantly the cock crew.
41:40
After his resurrection, he walked calmly through barred and bolted doors and just as easily vanished from view.
41:48
He created the universe. He claims the universe. He controls the universe. All of the entities of space, matter, and time are in his hands.
41:57
Thrones and dominions, principalities and powers, all of the forces of nature, all the factors in the total equation of eternity and time are at his command.
42:10
That is our king. That is our king Jesus. No wonder this donkey, that was no issue at all.
42:18
And so he's on this donkey and he's now on his procession into Jerusalem and the people are doing something very unusual.
42:29
They're laying their cloaks, their garments in his path on this dirty road where animals have probably already made a mess.
42:40
But this was a way that they honored kings back in that culture. Kind of the idea of rolling out the red carpet, right?
42:49
They were putting their garments down in the path of Jesus. They were also putting palm branches down, the other gospels tell us.
42:57
And when you look in Revelation, you get a glimpse of people from every nation, tribe, tongue, and God worshiping
43:04
Jesus. And it says that they have palm branches in their hands. Palm branches were a symbol of joy and salvation.
43:13
And these people are rejoicing in Jesus. They are rejoicing in his mighty works.
43:20
As we read through the text, we see this praise coming from the people.
43:27
Look at verse 37. You see where the source of their joy came from. As he was drawing near already on the way down the
43:35
Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that he had done.
43:45
All the mighty works that he had done. In this crowd, thousands of people had come out for the
43:51
Passover feast. In this crowd, there were people who had known Lazarus and were there when he was raised from the dead.
44:00
In this crowd, there were blind people who were now seeing. There were lame people who couldn't walk, and now they were standing there cheering for Jesus.
44:09
There were people who Jesus had cast demons out of, who were far gone crazy, and Jesus set them free.
44:19
They were praising him for his mighty works. Shouldn't we be praising
44:24
God for his mighty works? Has he opened up your eyes to the kingdom of God?
44:31
Has he filled you with hope? Has he given you new life spiritually? Has he forgiven you and set you free?
44:39
Has he healed your broken heart? Shouldn't you be praising him daily, living for his glory and his honor, giving him your allegiance?
44:51
The beautiful things that they were saying. They called him the blessed one.
44:56
Let's continue this story. They shouted, verse 38, blessed is the king who comes in the name of the
45:04
Lord. Peace in heaven and glory in the highest. They called him the blessed one.
45:11
He is the best of all beings. He is beautiful and perfect. He is the king who comes in the name of the
45:17
Lord. He is God's love gift to the human race. He is the one who brings the peace of heaven down to us.
45:25
He is glory in the highest. He deserves our utmost honor and glory.
45:31
He is so worthy. Here it was the Passover feast.
45:37
Thousands of people have come. First Corinthians 5 -7 says that Christ is our
45:42
Passover lamb, that he was sacrificed for us. When you read the other accounts of what people were saying, they called him
45:53
Hosanna to the son of David. Hosanna is a transliteration of a
45:58
Hebrew word and it means save us, Lord. They called him son of David.
46:05
That was a title for the Messiah, that Jesus would take the throne of the kingdom of Israel, the kingdom of Zion, the kingdom of God.
46:20
Hosanna in the highest, they cried. Son of David, heir to the throne.
46:28
He is the king of kings and the Lord of lords. But not all people were cheering that day, sadly.
46:36
Look at verse 39. Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to themselves, teacher, rebuke your disciples.
46:46
These were men who knew the word of God. In fact, the name
46:55
Pharisee comes from a Hebrew word to mean to separate. They were considered the separated ones.
47:01
They were considered especially devoted to God. Not separation in the sense of isolating themselves, because they were very well known to the people, but in the sense of purity and keeping the commandments of God.
47:19
They became so focused on religion that they missed the righteous one.
47:26
They were so focused on their rules and commandments and laws that they could not see the very law giver himself.
47:36
Religion can do that. We can be focused on our traditions, our rituals, and miss the
47:44
Savior. Man, I tell kids all the time, they'll tell me, oh,
47:50
I'm not religious. And I say, oh, that's good, because, you know, Jesus got really angry at religion. He's not looking for religion.
47:57
He's looking for a personal relationship. That's what he's looking for.
48:04
And most of the Pharisees missed it because they were blinded by their religion. As Jesus comes over the city, look at what happens in verse 41.
48:15
When he drew near, he saw the city, he wept over it. He wept over it.
48:22
I look this Greek word up in Strong's Concordance, kleio. There's two words for crying in Greek that the
48:30
New Testament uses, kleio and dokruo. Dokruo is to cry silently, tear running down your face, but you're not weeping like you might hear someone at a funeral just weeping, right?
48:47
This word kleio is the strong word. It means to sob, that is to wail aloud.
48:54
The heart of Jesus was so moved as he looked over Jerusalem because he knew what was awaiting
49:02
Jerusalem. He saw the future of those who would reject him. His deep love moved him to tears.
49:11
This shows us how deeply he longs for us to know him. Is he weeping over you because you'll give him no time?
49:26
Is he weeping over you because you have not made him your king? He paid for you with his precious blood and he longs for us to know him and spend time with him daily.
49:41
He was about to pay the ultimate price to redeem the people of Jerusalem and many of them were missing it.
49:48
They were rejecting him and he grieved because he knew that they were throwing out the very things that would bring them peace.
50:00
He prophesied that Jerusalem was going to be destroyed, the temple, everything, and that many people would perish as you read through that text.
50:13
In 80 -70, 40 years later, the Romans came in and they annihilated the city of Jerusalem.
50:21
They started a siege. They surrounded it in April and by the end of the summer, people in the city were starving and there were all kinds of people that had come for the
50:31
Passover that were trapped in the city. Finally, the walls were breached and the
50:37
Romans rushed in and slaughtered the people and demolished the whole city. Josephus, the
50:43
Jewish historian, estimates that there were 1 .1 million Jews that perished under the
50:50
Roman attack. Jesus saw this and he wept. He could have transformed that entire nation had they embraced him as their savior.
51:02
This made me think of all the heartache and pain that we could be spared from if we follow
51:08
Jesus. I look at the young people I work with and I see the path that they're on and it breaks my heart because they think it's okay and I know what it's going to end in.
51:19
When we're our own king, it's going to end badly. He rides that colt up Mount Moriah and he sacrifices his life to the brutality of the leaders and the
51:35
Roman soldiers and you know what they did to him. We'll be thinking about that this
51:40
Good Friday. He came on that donkey as a sacrifice.
51:51
People were cheering him, praising him, but people were plotting too. They wanted to get rid of him.
51:58
We find that today. Is he your king? Is he your king?
52:05
Is it showing? Are you letting him be your king, your lord? Are you giving him the worship that he is due?
52:12
Just quickly, just a few applications in closing. What should our response be to this king?
52:21
Embrace him as your savior and king, but to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.
52:31
Embrace him as your savior and your king. He delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of his beloved son,
52:40
Colossians 1 15. Number two, give him your allegiance. Pledge your heart to him.
52:47
Second Corinthians 5 15 says this, and he died for all that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for him who died for them and rose again.
52:58
All that torture he took, the price that he paid, that he literally died to save me,
53:04
I should be living for him, shouldn't I? My heart should be pledged to him in allegiance. Walk worthy of his kingdom.
53:13
This is from Thessalonians chapter 2 verses 11 -12. Paul says, For you know how, like a father with his children, we exhorted each one of you, encouraged you, and charged you to walk in a manner worthy of God, who calls us into his own kingdom and glory.
53:29
It says, walk worthy of God who calls us into his own kingdom. In Philippians, we are called citizens of heaven, and we need to reflect that in the way we live our lives, in the way that we love one another and love others.
53:44
And then number four, seek to do all unto his glory. He is worthy. First Corinthians 10 31.
53:51
Therefore, whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to his glory. He is worthy.
53:58
Live for his honor. And then number five, seek to help advance his kingdom on this earth. Pray that his kingdom will advance.
54:07
Jesus said, daily pray, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven.
54:15
Be willing to use your resources to advance the kingdom of God. Allow God to use you to advance his kingdom.
54:23
Be willing to speak up for Jesus, the king. It's awkward. And I think the enemy makes it that way.
54:34
But we need to be testifying that Jesus is the true king. He is the king and his kingdom is coming anytime soon.
54:46
And all other kingdoms are going to be done. And the only thing that's going to matter is his kingdom and that we're there with him and that we live for him here on this earth.
54:57
Amen. Amen. Isn't he worthy of our worship and praise? Yeah. I'm going to say a quick prayer.
55:03
I apologize. I went a few minutes over. I always do that. My wife tells me
55:08
I always plan way too much. She's right. Father God, just thank you that you love us, that you pay such an ultimate price so we could be in your kingdom.
55:18
And I pray that you would help us walk worthy of our King of kings and Lord of lords. Help us to take this to heart.
55:25
We love you. Thank you for your tender heart for us. And thank you now for this communion time in Jesus name.
55:32
Amen. Thank you Greg's coming to lead us in communion. Greg is one of our elders.
55:39
If you guys did not know that. Thank you Bill for that reminder of who our king is.
55:44
That he came humbly and that he laid his life down for us. At Recast, every
55:50
Sunday that we meet, we celebrate communion. Christ told his disciples at the last supper when he broke bread and when he shared the cup, do this in remembrance of me.
56:03
The apostle Paul tells us in first Corinthians 11 that for so long as we eat this bread and drink of this cup, we will proclaim his death until he returns.
56:14
And so for those of you who are new here at Recast and those who you're visiting, if you know Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, we invite you to join with us as we celebrate the
56:23
Lord's Supper. Please come to one of the corners as Dave plays and take of the bread and the cup.
56:30
But we also ask if any of you here don't know Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, we ask that you would refrain out of respect for our king and taking communion.
56:40
But we do ask that if anything that Bill has shared today from God's word sparked anything in your heart and you have a desire to know more about our king, please stop me.
56:52
I'll be up front or Bill over here on the side or Mark Klein or Bruce French. Please don't help stop or hesitate to stop and ask one of our elders.
57:00
We'd be glad to share with you more about our king and also why we celebrate communion. Pray with me now.
57:07
Heavenly Father, we thank you that your son, our king, came to us so humbly and so humbly and in such incredible love, laid down his life for us.
57:19
Father, may we remember it. May we proclaim it until the end of this age. Thank you, Father, for your love.
