- 00:05
- All right Let's pray Father, thank you for this day
- 00:12
- Lord, I pray At this very moment more that you will speak to your people through me
- 00:20
- No, we gather together to worship you to fellowship with each other
- 00:28
- We're so grateful that you have us together And now we have come to the moment where we hear from you through your word
- 00:36
- And we ask that you speak to us in the name of your precious son
- 00:42
- Jesus Christ. Amen All right, so this is part six of our series on reformed theology
- 00:52
- And so today we're going to break into the Mosaic Covenant now You cannot listen to what
- 00:59
- I say today and think that you know what I'm speaking about when it comes to reformed theology or the
- 01:06
- Mosaic Covenant you have to listen to the messages before as well as The messages after what
- 01:15
- I say today the way that I put this together.
- 01:20
- It is actually a unit You you cannot divide it You cannot go to one message and think that you understand what it is that I'm teaching about reformed theology
- 01:32
- Because again, we're not teaching a Presbyterian view of reformed theology. We're teaching a
- 01:39
- Particular Baptist, Reformed Baptist view of reformed theology particularly on Covenantalism Here in our outline is some of the topics that we will be covering so we have confessional confessional is the overarching umbrella of the host series and And we're still dealing with covenantal and after this we'll have
- 02:06
- Calvinistic law and gospel distinctions the ordinary means of grace Which if you think you know what
- 02:13
- I believe, you know that like keep coming like it's going to get really good And lastly the five solas of the
- 02:21
- Reformation. I Started thinking that maybe we could do this in six weeks. But again, this is the sixth message and we're still on the
- 02:31
- Covenantal like We're building like there's so much here. So my overarching outline for Covenantalism is the
- 02:41
- Covenant of Redemption the Covenant of Works Which we're still in the Covenant of Works and the
- 02:46
- Covenant of Grace This week we will look at the Covenant of Works for the fifth time and our outline is as followed the
- 02:56
- Adamic Covenant The Abrahamic Covenant the Mosaic Covenant and the
- 03:02
- Davidic Covenant And like I said earlier, we will begin the Mosaic Covenant today to give a quick overview we looked at the
- 03:12
- Covenant of Redemption and we and we understand that the Covenant of Redemption is that God the
- 03:17
- Father had a God the Father purposed and his purpose was to save a people and he done so by sending his son for God So loved the world that he sent his only begotten
- 03:29
- Son For all those who believe in him Will not perish but have everlasting life
- 03:35
- The only way anyone can't believe in Jesus is that they have to hear the message the message of what Jesus Christ has done the gospel
- 03:42
- Message and that is how the Holy Spirit applies the purpose. So we have God the Father Purpose to save a people and in doing so he sent his son to accomplish the purpose and the message of his son
- 03:55
- Is how the Holy Spirit applies that purpose and in order for that for the
- 04:00
- Holy Spirit to apply that purpose you and I? Have to preach the gospel whether it's catechizing our children on the street corner, whatever.
- 04:08
- It looks like Inviting your neighbors over for dinner. I don't know what it looks like for you, but we have to proclaim this message.
- 04:16
- That is how The purpose is applied and then we walk through the
- 04:23
- Adamic Covenant we saw that because of Adam's sin because Adam was the Covenant federal head that even though Eve ate the fruit first that we did not fall in Eve But we did not fall until Adam broke the
- 04:40
- Covenant It wasn't up to Eve to keep the Covenant It was up to Adam to keep the
- 04:46
- Covenant when Adam bros the Covenant because he broke the Covenant Dying he would die and you and I were born and Dying we will die because of this
- 04:58
- Adamic Covenant we are born in to Adam and so the idea is is that we're born we're we're clothed in the garment of the unrighteousness of Adam, and then we saw how
- 05:11
- This garment has to be removed from us through that message of Jesus Christ That garment of Adam is removed from us and God places upon us the righteousness of Christ And so it goes back to the
- 05:26
- Covenant of Redemption that this message of Jesus Christ through the
- 05:32
- The preaching of the gospel God removes the garment of unrighteousness
- 05:39
- And he puts upon us the garment of righteousness and it's done the same way that Abraham was saved
- 05:45
- And it takes us to the Abrahamic Covenant God Because of the seed of the woman the
- 05:54
- God is God's curse on Satan was that an offspring would come from the woman and he would bruise his head while only bruising his heel
- 06:04
- The offspring of the woman is passed through the line of Abraham God Chose among a group of pagans those who are born in Adam He chose among a group a man by the name of Abram and he calls him out and from Abram he he he he he basically
- 06:23
- Begins a kingdom people the the Israelite people and it was from Israel that we have the birth of our
- 06:32
- Savior started out with Abraham from Abraham to Isaac Isaac to Judah as we saw in the psalm from Judah to David and David is the one who sits on that throne and we'll get to that in the coming weeks
- 06:48
- So the idea is that God the Father purpose to save a people in doing so he sent his son
- 06:54
- Who is the offspring of the woman who is the offspring of Abraham? Who is the one that comes from Judah to all the obedience of the people will belong to and he's the one who sits on?
- 07:06
- the throne of David And so we come to our theme today our theme today is the law of God the law of God and And I want to make a statement before we begin
- 07:22
- And my statement is this So as I'm preaching through this
- 07:29
- I want you to remember this statement that I'm making right now because you might say Think something different and when you start thinking something different of what
- 07:37
- I'm saying, don't you think back to this statement? I Love the law of God. I Love the law of God If you are a believer here today, you have the law of God written in your heart
- 07:52
- It's written in you know if you're a believer if that garment of unrighteousness has been removed from you and God has placed that garment of Righteousness the garment of Christ upon you you have the law of God written in your heart
- 08:09
- The question is is do you love the law of God now?
- 08:14
- Let me ask it in a different way Do you wish that our government would establish the law of God with all of its rules?
- 08:25
- And with all of its punishments Now that's something else to think about Do you wish that our government would establish the law of God with all of its rules and with all of its punishment
- 08:38
- Our text for today is Matthew chapter 5 We will be considering 7 verses 17 through 20
- 08:45
- But before we read Matthew chapter 5 17 through 20. I want to read
- 08:52
- Galatians chapter 3 We'll look at verses 10 through 29 and then chapter 4 1 through 7
- 09:00
- I Will give a brief commentary from 10 through 14, then
- 09:07
- I will just read the rest Galatians 3 beginning in verse 10 for all who rely on the works of the law are
- 09:23
- Under a curse For it is written curse be everyone who does not abide by all things written in the book of the law and Do them now it is evident that no one is justified before God by the law for the righteous shall live by faith
- 09:52
- Now you can't be justified before God by the law the law cannot Justify you and right here is saying you not to live by the law those who have received
- 10:05
- Justification righteousness who have received this garment of righteousness. They do not live by the law
- 10:11
- They live by faith But the law is not of faith verse 12 rather the one who does them shall live by them
- 10:24
- Christ redeems us from the curse of the law By becoming a curse for us for it is written cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree
- 10:37
- Verse 14 So that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the
- 10:44
- Gentiles so that we might receive the promise through faith
- 10:53
- Those that are not under the law the Gentiles Gentiles are not under the law
- 10:58
- This happened so that we might receive the promise through faith Verse 15.
- 11:04
- I will just read from now on To give a human example brothers even a man -made covenant
- 11:10
- No one and knows it or adds to it once it has been ratified
- 11:15
- Now the promises were made to Abraham and to his offspring It does not say into offsprings referring to many but referring to one and to your offspring
- 11:27
- Who is? Christ This is what I mean the law which came 430 years afterwards does not annul a covenant previously ratified by God So as to make the promise void
- 11:45
- For if the inheritance comes by the law It no longer comes by promise, but God gave it to Abraham by a promise
- 11:56
- Why then the law it was added because of transgressions until the offspring should come
- 12:04
- To whom the promise had been made And it was put into place through an intermediary.
- 12:11
- I mean through angels by an intermediary Now intermediary implies more than one but God is one is
- 12:19
- The law then contrary to the promise of God certainly not For if a law had been given that could give life
- 12:27
- Listen, if a law had been given that could give life then righteousness would indeed be by the law
- 12:35
- But the scriptures in prison everything Understands so that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe
- 12:46
- Now before faith came we were held captive under the law in prison until the cotton to the coming faith would be revealed so then
- 12:55
- The law was our guardian until Christ came
- 13:02
- In order that we might be justified by faith But now that faith has come we are no longer under the a guardian
- 13:10
- For in Christ Jesus you are sons of God through faith For as many of you who were baptized into Christ put on Christ have put on Christ There's neither
- 13:23
- Jew nor Greek. There's neither slave nor free There's neither male nor female for you are all one in Christ Jesus And if you are
- 13:33
- Christ and you're Abraham's offspring Heirs according to the promise chapter 4 verse 1.
- 13:41
- I Mean that the heir as long as he is a child is no different from a slave
- 13:47
- Though he is the owner of everything, but he is under guardians and managers until the date set by the father in The same way we also when we were children we were enslaved to the elementary principles of the world
- 14:05
- But when the fullness of time had come God sent forth his son born of a woman born under the law to redeem those who are under the law so that we might receive adoption as sons and Because you are sons
- 14:23
- God sent his spirits God sent his spirit God sent the spirit of his son into our hearts crying
- 14:30
- Alba father So you are no longer slaves, but a son and if a son then an heir through God in our outline we will see how
- 14:44
- Jesus is the fulfillment of the law and the prophets
- 14:51
- We will see how Jesus is the fulfillment of the law and the prophets and he does so by point number one
- 15:00
- Fulfilling them. I know I spent a lot of time thinking about that one by fulfilling them by bringing judgment by properly teaching them and by the righteousness of faith
- 15:18
- So he fulfills it was so he he's it shows how Jesus is the fulfillment because he fulfilled them
- 15:27
- By bringing judgment by properly teaching them and by the righteousness of faith
- 15:35
- Now let's read our text Matthew chapter 5 verses 17 through 20
- 15:43
- Jesus speaking Says do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets
- 15:51
- I have not come to abolish them But to fulfill them for truly
- 15:58
- I say to you to you until heaven and earth passes away Not an iota not a dot will pass away
- 16:05
- From the law until all is accomplished Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same
- 16:16
- Will be called least in the kingdom of heaven But whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven for I tell you unless your
- 16:27
- Righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees You will never enter the kingdom of Heaven now as we transition an
- 16:45
- Interpretation or an application of a text removed from the context is nonsensical
- 16:51
- It's nonsensical. It's nonsense. It has no meaning and it makes no sense
- 16:57
- If you remove if you're teaching a text and you remove it from the context
- 17:05
- It's nonsense Now I hate to call any part of God's text nonsense but if you're up here if a preachers up here and he's and he's taking a passage of scripture and He's teaching it and he's not teaching the context what he's saying is nonsense
- 17:24
- It makes no sense it your text has to be found in the context
- 17:33
- Ladies and gentlemen, the book of Matthew is a very Jewish book
- 17:39
- Historically teaching they've all it's always been said this is a very Jewish book
- 17:45
- The book of the Gospel of Luke is more of a Gentile leaning gospel
- 17:50
- The Gospel Matthew is very Jewish The Sermon on the Mount was a message to Jews who thought they were in the kingdom of God remember
- 18:00
- God established a kingdom people through Abraham The recipients of this message would have been
- 18:09
- Jews look at Matthew chapter 5 verse 1 Seeing the crowds where is he's in Jerusalem seeing the crowds
- 18:17
- He went up on a mountain and when he sat down his disciple who were Jews Came to him the
- 18:25
- Beatitudes here are a lifting up of a spiritually broken people
- 18:31
- While the rest of this chapter he is bringing the law to bear on a spiritual prideful on spiritual prideful
- 18:40
- Jews Luke chapter 5 verses 31 and 32 says this
- 18:46
- Jesus speaking Jesus answered them those
- 18:52
- Who are well? Have no need for a physician speaking to the spiritual prideful
- 19:00
- They have no need for a physician But those who are sick The spiritually broken
- 19:07
- I have not come to call Righteous I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance
- 19:18
- He did not come to call the spiritual prideful to repentance Turning from self -righteousness, but the spiritually broken look at verse 13
- 19:31
- It says you are the salt of the earth But if salt has lost its taste
- 19:40
- How how shall it? How shall its saltiness be restored?
- 19:45
- It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people's feet
- 19:53
- He is speaking to the Israelites to the Jews they have lost their saltiness
- 20:01
- And he is telling them it's no you're no longer good for anything you're gonna be thrown out and people are gonna trample on you and That's exactly what happened
- 20:14
- It's exactly what happened in 70
- 20:21
- AD Jerusalem was destroyed. They were trampled on they have lost their saltiness
- 20:26
- It can no longer be restored to them verse 14
- 20:32
- You are the light of the world a city on a hill cannot be hidden now I'm not saying that we can't take application from this
- 20:40
- But unless you know what it's teaching you have no application is it's nonsense You are the light of the world a city on a hill cannot be hidden Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but this but But But on a stand and it gives light to all that are all in the house in the same way let your light shine before others so that they may see your good works and Glorify your father who is in heaven the cross -reference here leads to Isaiah Isaiah 49
- 21:24
- Verse 6 well, let's look at verse 5 and now the
- 21:31
- Lord says He who for me, so this is
- 21:37
- Isaiah. The Lord says he who for me in my womb to be his servants to bring
- 21:43
- Jacob back and That Israel might be gathered to him
- 21:50
- For I am honored in the eyes of the Lord and my God has become my strength verse 6 he says
- 22:01
- Is it too light of a thing? That you should be my servant and raise up the tribe of Jacob and to bring back
- 22:10
- The the preserved of Israel that I will make you a as a light for the nation's
- 22:18
- That my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth Isaiah is called to be a light
- 22:24
- To be a witness to raise up this nation
- 22:30
- So that they can be a light to the nation's the the law is called to be a light to the nation's
- 22:36
- Israel is called To be a light to the nation's David was called to be a light to the nation's pointing to Christ to be the light to the nation's
- 22:43
- Never once are Gentiles to be a light to the nation's But I'm not saying that now that we as Christians are not to be a light
- 22:53
- We have to understand that Israel was called to be the light of the nation's
- 23:00
- We don't understand that we will never Understand the text we also
- 23:13
- Jesus. Excuse me. We also see Jesus We also see
- 23:18
- Jesus Raised in the standard of the law in chapter 5 verse 27 and 28
- 23:26
- He says this is Jesus again You have heard that it was said you shall not commit adultery
- 23:35
- But I say to you Everyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery
- 23:42
- With her in his heart so Jesus takes the the law the law is do not commit adultery and He raises the standard
- 23:57
- In our text it talks about don't even relax the law. Don't belittle the law
- 24:03
- What does Jesus do he raises the standard? He raises the standard
- 24:11
- He raises the standard so high leaving them as well as you and I guilty
- 24:17
- He says don't even think About it. So you had this
- 24:23
- Pharisaical religious Jews who were not committed adultery, but Jesus said man if you even think about it
- 24:29
- You even think about it Adultery brought the death sentence
- 24:37
- Last week pastor cowell The message was on the law and if I'm not mistaken you presented it in a way to where it seemed to be a courtroom and that we were guilty and We were going to face judgment because that's what the law does before the law.
- 24:57
- We are all guilty When the gavel comes down the it's guilty you are guilty.
- 25:04
- That's what the law does you are guilty Then you I Like the way that you switch it at the end and you put it was
- 25:13
- Jesus on the stand And it's not that Jesus was guilty.
- 25:19
- It's that we were guilty, but Jesus took our Punishment Jesus took the our guilty sentence upon himself if I'm not mistaken if I heard that correctly
- 25:29
- But for the sentence, I mean if a man at this time would have committed adultery
- 25:38
- They were to die they were to be stoned to death Jesus said if you even look or if you look if you think lustful thoughts
- 25:50
- You need to be stoned you To be put to death
- 25:56
- Ladies and gentlemen, that's every one of us. No one lives No one lives after this
- 26:04
- The standard is so high and and he does this
- 26:13
- So that people will not be spiritually prideful The goal here is that everyone becomes spiritually bankrupt becomes spiritually broken because Christ did not come for the spiritual
- 26:25
- The spiritual prideful he can't he came for the spiritually broken
- 26:31
- Now I want to transition to our day and time we have a movement We have brothers whom
- 26:38
- I love dearly whom I call friends Who are a part of this movement, and I'm afraid that they're they don't understand what they're calling upon themselves
- 26:50
- And it's a movement called theonomy the word theonomy is broken down into Theo Numos Theo meaning
- 26:59
- God Numos meaning law It's the idea that the state is to be
- 27:06
- The numos governed by God and That sounds well and good.
- 27:12
- Yeah, we want our Country our states governed by God. The idea is is that it's the
- 27:22
- Mosaic Covenant It's that if you commit adultery, I mean if you really want to be honest
- 27:27
- This is what it is like like like like you can say it's not this but this is what it is if I was to To tell you that I was a
- 27:36
- Calvinist, but I only held to three points I would not be a Calvinist. I'd be a Southern Baptist, right?
- 27:42
- Right, all right, we cannot read Rename something that's already it means
- 27:49
- God's law. It means the Mosaic Covenant and so you have a
- 27:57
- Movement where people are trying to establish the Mosaic Covenant, but they're picking and choosing you cannot pick and choose
- 28:04
- If you establish it, this is what it is. It's establishing the Mosaic Covenant. Theonomy is
- 28:11
- God's law It's establishing God's law over the nation And if so, this is what it is if you commit adultery you deserve to die and Everybody wants justice unless the justice falls on them and then they want mercy
- 28:28
- And I just don't see that being taught in the New Testament anywhere I don't see Paul or anyone call in Rome to live under the
- 28:38
- Mosaic Law Theonomy as a movement Looks back at the
- 28:44
- Mosaic Covenant in an inconsistent way, thankfully Like I was saying earlier, they're like a three -point
- 28:51
- Calvinist Who's really a Southern Baptist because they're not really theonomist. They say they're theonomist, but they're not really theonomist
- 28:59
- Hoping to establish the Mosaic Law and what they use their main verse that they use is the one
- 29:07
- I'm fixing to go through right now Matthew chapter 5 verse 17 This is the critical verse that they use do not think that I have come to abolish the law see
- 29:19
- Jesus Christ did not come to abolish the law But they stopped there
- 29:26
- It continues it says or the prophets Have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.
- 29:34
- I Want you to notice that it that it says the law and the prophets
- 29:40
- Not just the law It says the prophets Those who would argue for a reestablishment of the
- 29:47
- Mosaic Covenant must also argue for modern -day prophets They go hand -in -hand you can't say one without the other
- 29:57
- If you argue for the for a movement for the reestablishment of the
- 30:03
- Mosaic Covenant you must also argue for the mark argue for modern -day prophets as Reformed Christian believers.
- 30:12
- We clearly see that biblical prophets have ceased Hebrews chapter 1
- 30:20
- It's probably the most go -to verse Chapter 1 verses 1 and 2
- 30:30
- Long ago at many times in many ways God spoke to our fathers how?
- 30:37
- by the prophets But in these last days he has spoken to us by his son whom
- 30:45
- He appointed the heir of all things through whom he also created the world
- 30:56
- John the Baptist was the last Oh Testament prophet by my estimation
- 31:04
- Biblical prophets who spoke the Word of God mainly spoke about two events the coming of the
- 31:12
- Messiah and The judgment upon Jerusalem. Isn't that what John the Baptist did?
- 31:20
- He said I'm a voice crying out in the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord make straight his path I see Pharisees and Sadducees coming down to the waters of Jordan you brood of vipers
- 31:29
- Who warned you to flee from the raft to come? Therefore do not think to say to yourselves.
- 31:36
- Oh, we have Abraham as our father I tell you that God is able to raise up children from Abraham from stones
- 31:43
- And even now the axe that's at the root of the tree and any tree that does not bear good fruit I'm it would cut down and thrown into the fire.
- 31:51
- I baptize you with water into repentance But he who comes after me is mightier than I whose sandals
- 31:57
- I'm unworthy to carry and he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire the whittling fork is in his hand
- 32:03
- And he was third to cleanse the thrashing floor. He will gather his wheat into the barn, but the chaff He will burn with an unquenchable fire
- 32:12
- Speaking of the Messiah and the judgment that's going to come upon Israel. So then the question is is what is
- 32:22
- What do we know about the law and it's really clear.
- 32:28
- It's in Galatians Galatians Excuse me.
- 32:35
- I Got my Bible mark. I'm getting confused. Okay Galatians chapter 3 I'm gonna read verse 19 a and then we'll go back to verse 15 and we'll come down to verse 19 a again
- 32:47
- This is what we know about the law. Why then the law why was the
- 32:53
- Mosaic? Covenant established that's what it's asking. It was added because of transgressions because of sin
- 33:06
- Look back at 15 Now I hope y 'all heard my last message because this is gonna be dealing with it to give a human example brothers
- 33:16
- Even if a man -made covenant Even with a man -made covenant.
- 33:21
- No one annuls it or adds to it once it has been ratified What was the covenant of this time?
- 33:26
- They would slaughter and animals they would slaughter animals and they would separate the the halves of the animals and they would put it on each side and they would
- 33:35
- Hold the two parties would hold hands and they would walk through these slaughtered animals He says once this covenant was made it could not be ratified.
- 33:44
- You could not It could not be done away with And we have
- 33:50
- God coming down in a theophany as they smoke and fire pot and a flaming torch walks through The the pieces of the torn animal himself because he put
- 34:01
- Abraham into a deep sleep He says now the promises were made to Abraham and to his offspring it does not say into offsprings referring to meaning but referring to one and to your offspring who is
- 34:17
- Christ and I went over this several times how Jesus is the Offspring and to all things that were promised to you.
- 34:30
- This is what I mean. This is Paul the law which came 430 years afterwards after God himself came down in the theophany and he walked through these slaughtered animals
- 34:42
- He says this is what I mean the law which came 430 years afterward does not annul a
- 34:53
- Covenant previously ratified by God So as to make the promise void what promise?
- 35:02
- That through his offspring who is Christ would receive a land And all the people then all the peoples of the world will be blessed through him verse 18
- 35:13
- For the inheritance come for if excuse me for if the inheritance comes by the law the inheritance meaning the land
- 35:22
- It no longer comes by promise, but God gave it to Abraham by a promise
- 35:30
- So why then the law? It was added added to what the Abrahamic Covenant it was at the law was added to the
- 35:39
- Abrahamic Covenant because of Transgressions the Mosaic Covenant was added to the
- 35:46
- Abrahamic Covenant because of sin because of sin
- 35:57
- The law promised physical and earthly blessings if you kept it and it promised
- 36:03
- Curses if you didn't keep it This That the law was for a particular people so so my argument to the theonomist is is that the law
- 36:16
- Was for a particular people The physical descendants of Abraham in a particular land the land of Canaan so if you look at I'll do my best to read this without speaking for the sake of time
- 36:40
- Exodus chapter 20 verses 18 through 21 Says this now, this is the establishment of that Covenant Now when all the people saw the thunder the flashings of lightning the sound of a trumpet the mountain the mountains
- 36:57
- Smoking the people were afraid and they trembled and they stood far off and said to Moses you speak to us and We will listen, but do not let
- 37:10
- God speak to us lest we die Moses said to the people do not fear for God has come to test you
- 37:19
- That the fear of him may be before you That you may not sin the people stood far off while Moses drew near to the thick darkness where God was
- 37:35
- Deuteronomy chapter 4 Now I'm gonna read verse 1 then we'll go to verse 5 and now the and now
- 37:51
- Oh Israel listen listen to the statutes and the rules that I am teaching to you and do them that you may live and Go and take possession of the land that the
- 38:05
- Lord your the Lord the God of your fathers has given you verse 5
- 38:12
- See that I have taught you the statutes and rules as The Lord God had commanded me
- 38:20
- That you should do them where in the land that you are entering to take possession of it
- 38:29
- Let's skip over here. I hate to skip them for the sake of time verse 9 only take care and keep your soul diligently lest you
- 38:39
- Forget the things that you have seen with your eyes Speaking of The time which it
- 38:48
- Verse 10 to tell you what it's speaking of. It's speaking of the Ten Commandments when the when it was given Unless they depart from your heart all the days of your life
- 38:59
- Make them known to your children and your children's children How on that day that you stood before the
- 39:05
- Lord Lord your God at Herbert the Lord said to me gather the people to me That I may let them hear my word so that they may learn to fear me
- 39:15
- All the days that they live on the earth and that they may teach their children. So and You come near and stood and you came near and stood by the foot of the mountain
- 39:27
- While the mountain was burning with fire. This is a theophany To the heart of to the heart of heaven wrapped in darkness cloud and gloom
- 39:37
- And then the Lord spoke to you out of the midst of the fire You heard the sound of the of his you heard the sound of words, but you saw no form
- 39:47
- There was only a voice Verse 13 and he declared to you his covenant, which is the ten
- 39:57
- I mean he declared you the covenant Which he commanded you to perform that is the
- 40:05
- Ten Commandments and he wrote them on two tablets of stone verse 14 is key and The Lord commanded me at this time to teach you the statutes and rules
- 40:16
- That you might do them in the land that you were going over to possess now whenever God rescued the people from the hands of the
- 40:26
- Egyptians all the males at that time that the Were circumcised
- 40:33
- But as they were in the wilderness whenever they did not go into the land of Canaan because they did not believe
- 40:39
- God they did not Trust God their children were not circumcised Remember the
- 40:44
- Covenant sign. It says if you do not circumcise them on the eighth day Is it good things or bad things bad things it's talked about it talks about them being cut off They were not circumcised in the wilderness
- 40:58
- Joshua chapter 5 says that as they were entering the land of Canaan then They were circumcised
- 41:06
- The children were not circumcised until they entered the land of Canaan Because this is where they had to keep the law was in the land of Canaan Deuteronomy chapter 18 15 through 19 the
- 41:26
- Lord God will write this again. This is Moses speaking the Lord God will raise up for you a prophet like me among you
- 41:36
- From your brothers it is he I mean it is to him you shall listen just as you desired of the
- 41:46
- Lord God at Herbert on the day of the assembly when you said to me
- 41:52
- Not I mean hold on When when you said let me not hear the voice of the
- 41:59
- Lord my God or see this great fire anymore speaking of when God gave them the Ten Commandments and The Lord said to me they are right in what they have said and when what they have spoken
- 42:10
- I will raise up from them a prophet like you from among their brothers
- 42:16
- And I will put my words in his mouth and he shall speak all that I command him
- 42:22
- This is speaking of Hebrews chapter 1 1 and 2 Talking about the
- 42:28
- Prophet Jesus being the the final prophet and whoever will not listen to My words that he shall speak in my name.
- 42:37
- I Will require it of him and now acts acts chapter
- 42:46
- Acts chapter 3 verse 22 Speaking of this time then Moses Moses said that the
- 42:54
- Lord will raise up for you a prophet like me from your brothers. You shall listen
- 43:00
- To him and whatever he tells you you shall be it If and it shall be that the soul that does not listen to that prophet shall be destroyed from the people
- 43:13
- Right here and all the prophets who have spoken from Samuel This is how he fulfills the prophets listen and all the prophets who have spoken from Samuel and those spoken from Samuel and those who came after him also
- 43:28
- Proclaimed these days the days that Jesus would come They spoke about the the the coming destruction and the coming
- 43:38
- Messiah verse 25 you are the sons of the prophets and Of the covenant that God made with your father saying unto
- 43:49
- Abraham and to your offspring Shall all the families of the earth be blessed.
- 43:54
- That's through Jesus Christ God having raised up His servants sent him to you first to bless you by turning every one of you from your wickedness
- 44:09
- John chapter 1 verses 16 and 18 says this Speaking of Jesus from his fullness
- 44:15
- We have all received grace upon grace For the law was given through Moses but grace and truth
- 44:26
- Has grace and truth came through Jesus Christ one more time look again at Galatians chapter 3 verse 19
- 44:41
- Why then the law it was added because of transgressions now turn to Daniel The Hotton's first came whenever we was touched on Daniel, so they should be very familiar
- 44:58
- Daniel chapter 9 we're only going to read verse 24 So we have the the angel
- 45:06
- Gabriel speaking to Daniel who is a Jew and he says to him 70 weeks are declared about your people
- 45:15
- So you have Daniel a Jew he says 70 weeks are declared about your people 70 weeks is as So one week in the
- 45:26
- Bible is seven years Jacob worked for Rachel for one week For Leah for one week, which total each one was seven years
- 45:36
- So for 14 years, he worked for laying in his father -in -law for his two daughters So when it says 70 weeks, it's speaking of 490 years
- 45:47
- For 70 weeks are declared about your people, which are the Jews in your holy city.
- 45:53
- Where's their holy city? Jerusalem the land of Canaan And there are to do six things to finish transgressions to put an end to sin to atone for iniquity to bring about everlasting righteousness to seal both vision and profit
- 46:15
- He fulfills the prophets, right? until annoying to most holy place So Daniel chapter 9 the 70 weeks are 490 years.
- 46:25
- The decree went out from King Arthur exert season 457 BC 490 years from 457
- 46:31
- BC takes us to a d33 in this time these six things must be brought to fruition and what was one of them the very first one to finish transgressions
- 46:52
- Why was the law added because of transgressions, what is one of the things he's going to do when he comes finish transgressions
- 47:01
- So, I believe these six things find their fulfillment in the gospel of Jesus Christ He finished the transgressions by putting an end to sin how by atoning for he is our atonement
- 47:14
- He is our at -one -ment He has put an end to transgression and by doing so listen listen to me there's no need for the
- 47:27
- Mosaic Law There's no need for the Mosaic Law. Why go back to Galatians.
- 47:35
- I Know I said last time. I'm sorry Even I can't keep up with myself
- 47:40
- Galatians We'll start at 19 and read through why then the law it was added because of transgressions listen until Until the offspring should come it was offspring
- 47:52
- Jesus Christ Until the offspring should come whom the promise had been made
- 48:00
- The law was going to end once the offspring came It was added until what does that mean?
- 48:09
- until until the offspring came To whom the promise had been made it was put in place through an intermediary
- 48:17
- Now intermediary implies that there's more than one, but God is one Is the law then contrary to the promise certainly not for fit for if a law had been given that could give life then righteousness would indeed be by the law and we will get into this real deep when we get into the the law and gospel distinction
- 48:38
- The law was never to bring life If the law had been given that could give life then righteousness would indeed be by the law
- 48:46
- But the scriptures in prison everything under sin so that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe now before faith came
- 48:56
- We were held captive under the law in prison until the coming faith will be revealed
- 49:02
- So then the law was our guardian until Christ came
- 49:10
- In order that we might be justified by faith But now that faith has come we are no longer under garden for in Christ Jesus you are sons of God through faith
- 49:21
- Not through the law of Moses through faith the
- 49:27
- Mosaic law as a covenant was only until the Messiah the prophet like Moses came
- 49:35
- Moses made it clear that when he Jesus the prophet like Moses Came the true prophet that they were to listen to him
- 49:44
- Not to the Mosaic law And I say that because the law of God is written in our hearts.
- 49:53
- Remember if this garment of Unrighteousness that belongs to Adam is removed from you.
- 50:00
- God puts on you his his the righteousness of Christ But in doing so he writes his law in your heart
- 50:08
- You don't need a tattoo tablets of stone to tell you what to do and these rules that Moses added to You have it in your heart
- 50:17
- It's that you love God and you love neighbor you love God by believing that Jesus is the
- 50:23
- Christ The son of the Living God and you love your neighbor Ladies and gentlemen,
- 50:29
- I love the law and I love the prophets But they are fulfilled in Jesus Christ the Ten Commandments the statutes and rules
- 50:38
- Exodus chapter 20 God gives the Ten Commandments Exodus chapter 21 through 23
- 50:45
- Moses writes the statutes and rules that reflect the Ten Commandments Exodus 24 the people confirmed the commandments by saying they will keep them
- 50:57
- In order to be under that law you have to confirm it by saying you will keep them due to again
- 51:03
- Deuteronomy 13 and just 14 and he declared to you the
- 51:08
- Jews his covenant Which the commandment you the Jews to perform that is the
- 51:15
- Ten Commandments and he wrote them on two tablets of stones And and and the Lord commanded me
- 51:21
- Moses at that time to teach you the statutes and rules Exodus 21 through 23 is how you read this where you read about it that you might do them in the land that you were
- 51:31
- Possessed Exodus 24 they confirmed that they will do that For the sake of time
- 51:38
- I'm gonna skip something. I'm gonna go to the closing the closing scripture reading If you've been coming to our
- 51:46
- Sunday school, you know that we've been going through the the law and the London Baptist Confession of Faith 19 chapter 19
- 51:55
- Verses 2 through 4. I mean chapters chapter 19 paragraphs 2 through 4 chapter 2 tells you the
- 52:03
- Mosaic law has to Separate into two duties to God and duties to neighbor paragraph 3 tells you that that the
- 52:13
- That the first part of the law has been abolished paragraph 4 tells you that the second half of it is no longer for us
- 52:21
- It's no longer for us because we do not live in Israel And listen go back and read it.
- 52:28
- But listen to the statement. You cannot be you cannot be for the reestablishment of the
- 52:35
- Mosaic law and be a part of a covenant confessional a confessional covenant body
- 52:45
- You cannot be for the most that you cannot be a theonomist and be a reformed
- 52:50
- Baptist Cannot be it our Confession says that it's ended the
- 52:57
- Bible says that it ended with Christ It ended with Christ and this is the message for us
- 53:05
- This is what we come to Hebrews chapter 12 verse 18
- 53:12
- For you have not speaking to those that are in Christ for you have not come to what may be touched a blazing fire a darkness a gloom a tempest in the sound of The sound of a trumpet a voice of the words he made the hearers beg that no further message be spoken
- 53:30
- We did not come to that mountain We're not out there saying
- 53:37
- Moses you speak to us. We don't want to hear from God He says you did not come to that mountain
- 53:45
- For they could not endure the order that was given to them if a beast touches the mountain it shall be stoned
- 53:52
- Indeed so terrifying was Was that that Moses said that he trembled with fear?
- 54:00
- But we have come to Mount Zion to the city of the Living God to a heavenly Jerusalem to the innumerable numbers of festival get angels and festival gathering and to the assembly of the firstborn who is enrolled in heaven and to God the judge of all into the spirits of righteousness made perfect and to Jesus the mediator of a new covenant and The sprinkle of blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel see that you do not refuse him who was speaking
- 54:27
- Ain't that what Moses said about the prophet who was to come God told him that would do not refuse to listen to this prophet for they didn't for For they did not escape when they refused to hear him who warned from earth speaking of Moses Much less will they escape if they reject him who warns from heaven speaking of Christ At that time his voice shook the earth but now
- 54:56
- His but now he has promised yet once more he would not only shake the earth But he will also shake the heavens the phrase yet once more indicates the removal of things that are shaken speaking of the law
- 55:09
- That is the things that have been made in order that the things
- 55:14
- That cannot be shaken the law within you the new covenant Therefore let us be grateful to receive a kingdom that cannot be shaken and thus let us offer to God Acceptable worship with reverence and all for our
- 55:30
- God is a consuming fire Ladies and gentlemen,
- 55:39
- Jesus Christ kept the law. He lived a life. We could not live and he died the death that we deserve to die
- 55:46
- If we try to establish the Mosaic law, we're spitting in the gospel's face
- 55:52
- He's already done this He's already done this and then the next few weeks we'll go deeper into it
- 56:00
- But this is just the opening the taste that I don't have to keep that law
- 56:07
- Why because Jesus Christ has already kept it. I'm not saved by that law nor am
- 56:12
- I sanctified by that law But he has put his spirit in me That obeys that law, but not the statutes and rules.
- 56:23
- I don't I'm not governed if I Sadly if you commit adultery you do not get stoned.
- 56:30
- All right, you get forgiveness You get forgiveness You get forgiveness everybody wants justice until it happens to them
- 56:42
- If you mess up if you've been a Christian and you mess up listen if you drop the ball
- 56:47
- And you break something and you deserve death You do not want justice
- 56:55
- You won't forgiveness you won't mercy But someone breaks that but if someone was to sleep with your wife, you would want justice
- 57:04
- We have to think as Christians we have to be forgiven Even though someone deserves justice as Christians.
- 57:16
- We must give them mercy Jesus says someone slaps you on your right cheek turn to them the other the law says
- 57:25
- That you slap them. They poke out your eye you poke out their eye Jesus says no you give them mercy
- 57:33
- You give them mercy I'm available to anyone Pastor cow also available.
- 57:44
- Please pray with me father. Thank you Thank you for your word
- 57:52
- Lord I Thank you for your supper Lord, I pray that as the music is playing that we as a church are prepared on heart to receive from you
- 58:08
- The elements of the body that was broken for us and the blood that was poured out for us
- 58:17
- Lord I pray that you will bless it and that you will use this To grow us in our sanctification
- 58:25
- Not the law, but the elements of the new covenant
- 58:33
- Lord be with us, please. I beg you in the name of your precious Son Jesus.
