- 00:16
- Good Saturday morning, people of faith. This weekend, we are reading in all of the
- 00:24
- Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. There's different passages about the calling of the disciples and the sending out of the disciples, as well as the feeding of the 5 ,000.
- 00:37
- And we're going to be reading in John chapter 6 in particular about that event, and then what happens the day after that event in particular.
- 00:50
- I'm going to pick things up in John chapter 6, but what's happened so far is after the feeding of the 5 ,000, the people there wanted to seize
- 01:03
- Jesus and make him king. And so he went away up into the mountains.
- 01:09
- The disciples left on a boat, and the people the next day followed after the disciples and found
- 01:18
- Jesus and the disciples together. And even though Jesus didn't get in the boat, was on the other side of the lake with them.
- 01:30
- And so just another example of Jesus' miraculous working in that he walked on the water to get to them.
- 01:41
- All right, so we get to verse 26, and they said, Rabbi, when did you come here?
- 01:48
- In verse 25, and Jesus answered them and said, Most assuredly, I say to you, you seek me not because you saw the signs, but because you ate the loaves and were filled.
- 01:59
- Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the
- 02:09
- Son of Man will give you because God the Father has set his seal on him.
- 02:15
- So he's saying, look, you work and you toil for bread that you could eat or that it could spoil.
- 02:23
- That's not the bread you should be looking for. And in verse 28, they said to him, What shall we do that we may work the works of God?
- 02:32
- And Jesus answered them, answered and said to them, This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he sent.
- 02:42
- Of course, who is that him that God the Father sent, but Jesus the
- 02:47
- Son. And so the command there is to believe in the Son. Verse 30,
- 02:54
- Therefore they said to him, What sign will you perform then that we may see it and believe you?
- 03:02
- What work will you do? Now he just fed the 5 ,000.
- 03:08
- He just miraculously arrived on the other side of the lake without getting in a boat.
- 03:16
- And now they're still looking for a sign. So it says,
- 03:22
- Our fathers ate the manna in the desert as it is written. He gave them bread from heaven to eat.
- 03:32
- Then in verse 32, Jesus said to them, Most assuredly, I say to you,
- 03:38
- Moses did not give you bread from heaven, but my father gives you the true bread from heaven for the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.
- 03:53
- So again, he's pointing to himself, saying, saying, I'm the one you need.
- 04:00
- And he's going to make that even more clear in just a moment, says, Then they said to him, Lord, give us this bread always.
- 04:09
- And Jesus said to them, I am the bread of life. This is another of the
- 04:15
- I am sayings of Jesus. I am the bread of life. He who comes to me shall never hunger and he who believes in me shall never thirst.
- 04:25
- But I said to you that you have seen me and yet you do not believe all that the father gives me will come to me and the one who comes to me,
- 04:35
- I will by no means cast out, for I have come down from heaven not to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me.
- 04:46
- This is the will of the father who sent me that of all he has given me,
- 04:52
- I should lose nothing but should raise it up at the last day.
- 04:57
- And this is the will of him who sent me that everyone who sees the son and believes in him may have everlasting life and I will raise him up at the last day.
- 05:10
- So, so all that the father gives to the son, the son will preserve and raise up the last day.
- 05:23
- And he who comes to the son, Jesus will by no means cast out.
- 05:30
- These are the the same group of people. And it says immediately after this, the
- 05:37
- Jews complained about him because he said, I am the bread which came down from heaven.
- 05:43
- They're like, this is Joseph's son. What what what is this about that he came from heaven?
- 05:50
- They are not believing. And Jesus calls them out for they're not believing.
- 05:56
- They have they have seen the signs. They want him to be their king, but they don't truly trust in him because they are not the ones that the father has given to him.
- 06:11
- And so Jesus is the bread of life.
- 06:16
- He is that it points us back to the manna of the of the Old Testament, that the
- 06:22
- Lord's provision for the people to be to be saved physically was the manna for us to be saved spiritually is
- 06:33
- Jesus, for us to trust in him. And so I have a question for us all this morning, this morning, and it is this.
- 06:43
- What if you were in that crowd? Would you have been one who.
- 06:49
- Heard that, well, you don't believe in me, so you you you say, well,
- 06:58
- I'm just going to say that's not someone from the father, because we saw who he was growing up under Joseph and you in your mind, you're you're shaking your fist at what
- 07:14
- God has provided for you. Or would you be one who responded and said, said, but Lord, and like the disciple said, you are the one that has the words of life.
- 07:29
- And I would suggest to you that your response to that would indicate whether or not you were the one believing unto eternal life or whether you were the one who was in rebellion and on the road to destruction.
- 07:48
- Let that word be a challenge to you, and my prayer is that you would be one of the believing ones trusting that Jesus is, in fact, the bread from heaven.
- 08:03
- Let us pray. Heavenly Father, you have sent your son.
- 08:09
- Jesus, who is the bread of life, let us trust in what you have done for us that we might experience life everlasting and not hunger and not thirst in that day.
- 08:26
- It's in your son's name, Jesus, we pray. Amen. Have an excellent day, people of faith.
