Recently a friend asked if I would make a series of videos to aid in family worship. This is the SEVENTH VIDEO in that series, looking at KING DAVID. This can be used to prepare a time of family worship or to be shown during family worship. If you like this video and want me to continue, please leave a comment below.

Hey guys, it's Pastor Keith and welcome back to our family worship series. Just a reminder, these videos are intended to help you in one of two ways.
00:07
Either they're for you to prepare your own time of family worship, or you can play them during family worship for you and your children to follow along.
00:16
Each week we have a memory verse and last week our memory verse was John chapter 1 verse 17.
00:24
So take a minute, go around the room, see who remembers last week's memory verse and ask how many of you remember the four figures that we've talked about so far.
00:38
All right, so how many of you remember the memory verse? John chapter 1 verse 17, for the law was given through Moses, grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
00:49
And how many of the figures did you remember? So far we've looked at Adam, Noah, Abraham, and Moses.
00:55
Today we're going to be looking at King David. What do you know about King David?
01:02
Now I've been wanting for a while to include my children in this show to show you that they participate in family worship as well.
01:09
And so what I'm going to do now is I'm going to cut to a video of me asking my children what do they remember about King David.
01:16
Hi everyone, this is my daughter and her name is Hope Foskey. Hope, can you tell me what you know about King David from the
01:24
Bible? We all know that he was a little shepherd boy who grew up to be king.
01:30
What stories do you remember from the life of King David? He defeated Goliath as a child. Okay, so David and Goliath.
01:37
Is there any other stories that you remember from the life of King David? No. All right, so I'm here with my daughter
01:44
Faith and I'm going to interview... What? I'm on the slide. And she is on the slide, that's right.
01:50
When we get done, I'll let you slide, okay? What do you remember about King David from the
01:56
Bible? He was brave to defeat Goliath.
02:02
Can you tell me anything else about King David? His dad said, go get food for your brothers in the army.
02:09
He went to go get his brothers. His brothers were scared to defeat Goliath and then he will stand up for us brothers.
02:17
It's like staying up for people. Okay, so David went and he stood up to Goliath when he was bringing food to his brothers.
02:23
Yeah. Okay, all right. Is there anything else about King David's life that you remember?
02:31
No. All right, so you ready to slide now? Slide. Yay. This is my son,
02:37
JJ, and now I'm going to ask him a question. What do you remember about King David? King David was, the story of David and Goliath was a cool story.
02:48
Like Dave shot Goliath with a stone and then he's now king.
02:53
Do you remember any other story from the life of David? No. Okay.
03:00
One of the things most everybody remembers about David is the story of David and Goliath, which comes to us in 1
03:06
Samuel chapter 17. Goliath was a great big warrior and David was still a small young man, but David was willing to stand against Goliath and God gave him the victory.
03:17
David defeated Goliath with nothing but a sling. And when I was a kid, I was thinking that that was something like a slingshot.
03:24
I don't know if you've ever seen a slingshot before, but that was always what was in my mind when I saw this as a child.
03:29
But actually that's not what David had. What David had was a pouch, which was connected to two cords.
03:35
And in that pouch, he would put a stone and he would hold the cords and he would spin it really fast. Then he would let go of one of this cords and it would rocket out like a bullet.
03:45
Well, when that stone hit Goliath in the head, Goliath fell down in battle. So David ran up and he took
03:52
Goliath's sword and he cut off his head. The story of David and Goliath is definitely interesting.
03:57
And the life of David is filled with all kinds of amazing stories, just like it. Many of them teach us things about faith and about commitment and about friendship and even about failure and grief and repentance.
04:11
In fact, David authored many of the Psalms in the Bible. And one of them he wrote after he committed a terrible sin.
04:18
David stole another man's wife and was responsible for that man being killed. So God sent a prophet named
04:25
Nathan to David to convict him of his sin. And as a result, David wrote Psalm 51.
04:31
Psalm 51 says, Now would be a great time for a
04:42
Bible drill. Take a minute, pause the video and everyone find Psalm 51 and read the chapter out loud together.
04:54
One of the most important things about David is that he was given a promise from God. David was told by God that his kingdom would last forever.
05:03
We see this in 2 Samuel 7, verse 16, which says, So how is this promise fulfilled to David?
05:21
It's fulfilled through his descendant, Jesus Christ. The ministry of Jesus began by the proclamation that the kingdom had come.
05:29
And later when he came into Jerusalem on a donkey, the people were hailing him as the son of David.
05:37
In fact, this is one of the most common phrases used of Jesus in Matthew's gospel.
05:43
Matthew begins in Matthew 1, verse 1 with these words, And then several more times we see in Matthew 9, 27,
05:56
Matthew 12, 23, Matthew 15, 22, and Matthew 21, 9. All of those times we see people calling
06:02
Jesus the son of David. David was promised that he would have a kingdom that would last forever.
06:09
And Jesus, as David's descendant, fulfilled that promise and now reigns as king of kings forever.
06:18
I really hope you're picking up on the pattern of the lessons that I've been giving over the last several weeks. These haven't just been basic biographies of important biblical figures, but I've been wanting to show you why these five figures are so important.
06:32
And they're important because all of them point to Jesus. This is why
06:37
I say if you understand these six figures, including Jesus, then you've taken a big step in understanding the whole story of the
06:45
Bible. Now next week, we're going to conclude this series on these six figures by looking at the person, work, and ministry of the
06:54
Lord Jesus Christ. In the meantime, be sure to memorize this week's memory verse, which is 2
07:01
Samuel 7, verse 16. And your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me.
07:08
Your throne shall be established forever. I truly hope you're enjoying this series on family worship.
