00:20
You are listening to the podcast of Recast Church in Matawan, Michigan. Good morning, everybody.
00:29
So I've been doing a little reflecting the last couple of weeks because I turned 40 years old, actually 40 years old in Christ.
00:45
So it was 40 years ago this month in April of 1978 that Jesus reached down and rescued me.
00:56
And it was a result of seeing my best friend set free from drug and alcohol addiction.
01:05
And I was trapped right there with my friend John. I was 20 years old at that time and my life was so empty and so dark.
01:17
And this ray of God's light shot down into my world through my best friend becoming a new creation in Jesus.
01:25
And the only thing you could say about it was that it was a genuine miracle of God because he was so transformed and changed.
01:35
No rehab. And in all human respects, he should have had to have gone through something like that.
01:45
But he was set free and that's when I knew Jesus was true. And I asked him to come into my life and he began to change me and set me free.
01:58
And I learned quickly what a treasure his book is. And that this is the primary way that God speaks to us through his holy word.
02:10
And I discovered a book in the Bible called the Psalms. And to this day it's one of my favorite books.
02:17
Every day I read a different psalm. So this morning I was in Psalm 78.
02:25
I'm excited that I get to teach on one of my very favorite psalms which is Psalm 139.
02:32
And this psalm has blessed me in some amazing ways. So when
02:39
I started to pray to God in 1978, that was a weird experience.
02:47
Sometimes I felt like I was talking to myself. I felt strange.
02:55
It wasn't part of my life. And I often wondered, is
03:00
God listening to me? Does he care? I mean, there's a lot of people on this earth.
03:08
People more important than me. Why would he listen to me? And I thought of God in this way.
03:16
I thought of him sitting way up in the heavens on a throne. Not a bad picture of thinking of God on a throne.
03:25
We find that in the word of God. But I thought he was kind of way up there and then he was looking down on us.
03:31
And that, you know, maybe he's hearing me. And then
03:37
I would listen to people pray. And sometimes it didn't really sound like they were talking to God, if you know what
03:44
I mean. It sounded like they were talking to the other people in the room. And so this mystery of prayer, this mystery of connecting with God.
03:55
And because I love the psalms and I started reading through them, I came to Psalm 139.
04:02
And this psalm has transformed my understanding of prayer. And the reality, is
04:10
God listening? Does he know what I'm saying? I was told, hey, you can pray in your heart.
04:18
You don't have to pray out loud. And I thought, hmm, how will
04:24
God hear that if I don't say it out loud, right? And I would try to pray in my heart, you know, in places where maybe it wasn't appropriate to pray out loud.
04:34
And it just seemed like it wasn't real. Until I learned the truth of Psalm 139.
04:43
So I'm excited to be able to walk through some of the verses in this psalm starting this morning and then finishing it next
04:53
Sunday. So I want to start just by reading the psalm together.
05:00
So if you would turn in your Bible or on your phone or we're in Psalm 139.
05:06
There's Bibles under the seats also. And if you need a
05:12
Bible this morning, we'd love for you to have a copy of God's Word. You can keep the Bible if you don't have one, okay?
05:19
So Psalm 139, I'm going to read all of the verses.
05:25
And then we're going to break down verses one through six this morning for our teaching time.
05:32
Says, O Lord, you have searched me and known me. You know when I sit down, when
05:38
I rise up, you discern my thoughts from afar. You search out my path and my line down and are acquainted with all my ways.
05:47
Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O Lord, you know it all together.
05:53
You hem me in behind and before and lay your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me.
06:01
It is high, I cannot attain it. Where shall I go from your spirit or where shall
06:06
I flee from your presence? If I ascend to heaven, you are there.
06:13
If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there. If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me and your right hand shall hold me.
06:25
If I say, surely the darkness shall cover me and the light about me be night, even the darkness is not dark to you.
06:33
The night is bright as the day, for darkness is as light with you.
06:40
For you form my inward parts, you knitted me together in my mother's womb. I praise you for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
06:47
Wonderful are your works and my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you when
06:53
I was made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance.
07:01
In your book were written every one of them, the days that were formed for me when as yet there was none of them.
07:09
How precious to me are your thoughts, O God. How vast is the sum of them. If I would count them, they are more than the sand.
07:18
I awake and I am still with you. Oh, that you would slay the wicked, O God.
07:24
Oh, men of blood, depart from me. They speak against you with malicious intent.
07:30
Your enemies take your name in vain. Do not I hate those who hate you, O Lord?
07:36
And do I not loathe those who rise up against you? I hate them with complete hatred.
07:41
I count them my enemies. Search me, O God, and know my heart.
07:47
Try me and know my thoughts and see if there be any grievous way in me and lead me in the way everlasting.
08:02
Does the Father know your struggles? Does he know your frustrations?
08:08
Does he know your heartaches? Does he know that you get weary of the same routine day after day?
08:18
Do you long to connect with him in a deeper way? And yet you feel like you're not making any progress?
08:27
Do you feel like nobody understands? All of us have heartaches that we're dealing with in our families and then we look at what's going on in our world and we wonder where is our world going?
08:40
And if you're anything like me, I become very burdened with that. And it becomes heavy upon my shoulders.
08:47
The weight of my responsibilities of being in ministry and family and just being human on this earth, right?
08:58
If you're anything like me, you struggle a lot. But what we're going to look at today is how near our beautiful Heavenly Father is to us.
09:10
That he is fully aware of you inside and out. That he understands you like no one else.
09:18
That he and he loves you point blank just the way you are. But he loves you so much that he doesn't want to leave you just the way you are.
09:27
He wants to bring healing and transformation to us. He wants us to go deeper in our walk and our relationship with him.
09:36
And he's longing to speak into our lives. He's longing for us to connect with him in a deeper, more meaningful way in prayer.
09:47
Instead of what I have often prayed, just empty, hollow prayers.
09:55
He wants real conversation. One thing I've learned is to be totally honest with my
10:03
Father. Because he knows my struggles like no other.
10:10
And he sees it all, he knows it all. So I talk to him about it all. And we're going to just see, is he hearing you when you pray?
10:23
Is he? I'm excited about looking at that together. I'm going to pray and then we'll spend some time in worship together.
10:33
Father, just thank you for this beautiful sunny day. And that brings us hope that warm weather is coming.
10:41
And just thank you for bringing us through the winter and that spring is here.
10:47
And soon new life will be exploding out everywhere. And just thank you that you are the
10:55
God of new life. You are the God of creation. You are the God of new beginnings.
11:02
You are merciful. You love us like more than any parent could ever love their child.
11:08
And I thank you so much for that. And Father, I know that many of us long to connect with you in a deeper way,
11:15
Father. And when we can't see you with the human eye, we struggle with that.
11:21
Father, just praying and wondering if you're hearing us, if that answer is going to come.
11:29
Or Father, how can we get closer to you? And I just pray that you would speak to us about these things this morning.
11:36
And I pray now as we worship together that we would just hear the words of these songs.
11:45
And that we would sing them to you in praise. Just thank you for your great faithfulness. For seeing us through another week.
11:52
And that we can gather together as a family this morning. And Lord, you know how much we need you.
11:59
How much we need to be encouraged in you today. And I pray that would happen.
12:04
We ask these things in Jesus' holy name. Amen. If I have not met you yet,
12:11
I hope to. And I've been loving meeting new people every week, it seems like.
12:19
And I know that I don't know everybody here this morning. Just to tell you briefly a little bit about myself before we dive into Psalm 139.
12:32
Born and raised in Kalamazoo. Born in 1957. It was a good year.
12:41
As I shared earlier, I came to Christ at the age of 20. I was in the heating trade, fixing furnaces for 10 years.
12:50
And all the time trying to be a light to our customers. And got involved in jail ministry.
12:58
With Forgotten Man Ministries up at the Kalamazoo County Jail. And that was instrumental in leading me to coming on staff at Kalamazoo Youth for Christ.
13:07
I've been a full -time missionary at Kalamazoo Youth for Christ for 31 years now.
13:14
Recast is one of my supporting churches. My home church and one of my supporting churches. So I thank you all for your support for our ministry.
13:23
I have the privilege of heading up what we call Juvenile Justice Ministry.
13:30
And so my outreach is to young people who have found themselves in trouble. And brought into the juvenile justice system.
13:39
And so this morning before I came here, I was at the juvenile home. Where we do chapel every
13:45
Sunday morning. I had some of my co -leaders at Lakeside Academy this morning.
13:51
Also doing chapel service there. And so we get to bring the good news of Jesus to some really struggling, hurting teenagers.
14:02
Who have found themselves in trouble. With the law locked up. And wondering if life is worth living.
14:09
And we get to come and tell them that the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords, He loves you.
14:15
And He sacrificed His life for you. So that you could become His child.
14:21
And this last month we've been sharing the crucifixion and resurrection story with young people.
14:28
My ministry areas are the Juvenile Home, Lakeside Academy. Up on Oakland there's 120 young people up there.
14:34
Who from all over the United States. Who found themselves in a detention center. Needing more help than that facility could provide.
14:42
And they go to Lakeside. They live there six months to up to two years. And we get to every week bring them the word of God.
14:51
And the good news of God's love. We gave an invitation just a couple chapel services ago at our
14:59
Lakeside service. We do separate service for boys and for the girls. They keep them separated up there on that campus.
15:07
And so I have a team of women who do the girls chapel. And I lead the young men. And we gave an invitation.
15:16
We had 50 boys in chapel that night. It was awesome. We were all crammed together. And we gave an invitation.
15:24
If you're ready to receive Jesus into your life. Just stand up. And about 15 guys stood up.
15:32
And we prayed together with them. Asking the Lord into their lives.
15:39
And some of these young men just, you know, have grown up in the streets. And gang life.
15:45
And seen lots of violence. And now they can begin to experience healing and transformation.
15:53
Through the amazing love of Jesus and his healing power. And I'm so glad for the
15:59
Savior. And I know you are too. I'm so glad that he hears us. And I hope, you know, if I went around and did a survey.
16:10
Do you believe God hears you when you pray? Of course we know the right answer is yes, right? Okay. But do we really pray?
16:18
Like he is just like right there with us. Focusing on us. My child, I'm here for you.
16:25
What, how can I help you? Let me speak into your life. And we may say this prayer.
16:33
Because we know we should. And we want our family protected. And we need God to take care of us.
16:41
But is it a genuine relationship? A connection?
16:47
Like you would talk to a parent who you were very close to. Or a loved one or a friend.
16:54
And the good news is that we can talk to him like that. So open up your
17:00
Bibles again to Psalm 139. And we're gonna kind of explore verses one through six this week.
17:08
And then we're going to tackle more of the psalm next week. Two separate messages.
17:16
And there is so much in this psalm that you could literally spend weeks teaching through this.
17:23
And I know that from studying it. I've probably got blessed a lot more than you will this morning.
17:31
But I hope you get a blessing. Because as I've studied this out for the last three weeks.
17:37
As I've tried to find increments of time to study this. And write down some thoughts.
17:43
It has just really encouraged me. And blessed me in my connection with God. In verse six, we find this statement.
17:54
Well, let's just read verses one through six again. It says, O Lord, you have searched me and known me.
18:01
You know when I sit down and when I rise up. You discern my thoughts from afar.
18:07
You search out my path and my lying down. And are acquainted with all my ways.
18:13
Even before a word is on my tongue. Behold, O Lord, you know it all together. You hem me in behind and before.
18:21
And lay your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me. It is high,
18:27
I cannot attain it. Verse six, after God gives
18:32
David this revelation. David the prophet. David is overwhelmed by the truth here.
18:39
And it's like he's saying, Lord, this just seems too good to be true. That you see me, that you hear me.
18:47
That you know my every thought. God, I cannot grasp this reality. I don't understand it.
18:54
And as we read further in the revelation of Psalm 139, God goes on to explain how we can have that complete knowledge and attention upon each one of us.
19:10
And David says, this is just too wonderful. This is some good news. That God hears me when
19:17
I pray. That he knows me, he knows my struggles. I'm an open book.
19:24
To him. I've entitled this message, He Who Searches the
19:31
Hearts. And when you look at verse one, we find who this searcher of hearts is.
19:38
Look at verse one. Oh Lord, you have searched me and known me. Who is the searcher of hearts?
19:45
Here we see the word Lord, all capital letters. Anytime you see that in the
19:50
ESV and some other translations, it means that this is the
19:55
Old Testament name of God. Sometimes pronounced Jehovah. Sometimes pronounced
20:01
Yahweh. We're not even sure exactly how to say it properly because Israel who was entrusted with the
20:11
Old Testament scriptures, they felt unworthy to say the name of God. And then when they would come to the sacred name of God, they would say
20:19
Lord, Adonai. Because they felt unworthy to say the sacred name of God.
20:25
It's four Hebrew letters without any vowels. And so we were kind of guessing how it might be pronounced.
20:34
It seems like a lot of scholars are leaning toward Yahweh. And I'm sure you've heard that before.
20:41
Jehovah has been around for a while. But the Hebrew word, it means the self -existent eternal one.
20:51
The one who is. In Exodus at the burning bush, God said, I am who
20:57
I am. That's what this name means. God is saying, I am who
21:02
I am. I love studying the names of God. In the titles and attributes of God.
21:10
And this book is just full of them. And we learn something. It's like turning a diamond and looking at the different facets as we explore these different names and titles of God, we see more and more of his beauty and his glory and who he truly is.
21:28
And I haven't, anytime I see a book on the names of God, I'm gonna get that book.
21:33
Just because it's my favorite thing to study. And in one of the books I have, Every Name of God in the
21:38
Bible by Larry Richards, he says this of the name Yahweh. He says, God is not merely self -existent.
21:47
As Yahweh, he is present with his people. In essence, the name revealed
21:53
God as the one who is always present with his people. I like that. The God who is always present with his people.
22:03
The immediate literary context of the revelation of God's name as Yahweh then leads us to understand and to translate that name as the one who is always present.
22:15
When you see that word in the Old Testament, in all capital letters, know that that is
22:21
Yahweh. The I am, the one who is always present with his people.
22:28
And look at what it says in verse one that God is up to. What is he interested in?
22:34
Says, oh Lord, you have searched me and known me. He's interested in us.
22:44
He's searching us. This word searched in the Hebrew is kokar. Kind of a fun word, kokar.
22:52
I just had to say it. It means to examine intimately.
23:00
Like not a casual look, but you're like really checking this out. That's what it means.
23:08
Does he know me? Does he know you? Does he know your name?
23:16
If you're five, six, seven years old, does he know you? Does he take notice of you?
23:27
The word says that he has searched you and he knows you. Now you say, well, you know, this is
23:34
David. He was the king of Israel. Of course, God was interested in David. But look at who he is really talking about.
23:43
Jump down to verse 13 with me. Now I'm the youngest of five kids and my mom and dad told me that I was an accident.
23:53
I said, oh, thanks, mom and dad. And they laughed when they said it.
24:00
But they meant it. They said, we didn't plan you. My mom had two little boys tearing around the house.
24:06
She had twin little girls, two -year -olds. And now all of a sudden she finds out she's pregnant for me.
24:12
She told me I sat down on the bed and cried. I'm like, gee, thanks, mom. You really know how to make me feel good.
24:19
And they laughed and they said, you're an accident. And I believed it because I did not know the truth of God's word.
24:29
I work with lots of young people who think they're accidents because their own dad doesn't even want them.
24:38
And I show them this scripture here. Look at verse 13. For you form my inward parts.
24:44
You knitted me together in my mother's womb. I praise you for I'm fearfully and wonderfully made.
24:50
Wonderful are your works, and my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you when
24:55
I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance.
25:02
In your book they were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me when as yet there was none of them.
25:10
This is talking about every human baby that's formed in the womb.
25:16
This is talking about all 7 .6 billion of us, approximately, on this planet.
25:25
That God blessed you in your mother's womb. It says that he knit you together and that you are fearfully and wonderfully made.
25:34
You are a unique, special creation of God and he cares about you.
25:39
He cares about us. He is our maker. He is our sustainer. He is giving you the breath that you are breathing right now.
25:48
And he loves you regardless of how your heart is to him. And he ultimately proved that at the cross.
25:57
He knows us inside and out. He knew us before we were born.
26:04
He brought us forth and he has sustained us. And in verse 16 it says he knows how many days we have on this earth and he knows what each day holds already before they already come.
26:19
Because he is the all -knowing one as we're going to find out as we study through this scripture.
26:28
He says, I have searched you out in verse 1. And remember that this means to examine intimately.
26:36
He knows my struggles. I'm not hiding anything from him. He sees it all.
26:43
And he's the one who can help and transform us. He says, you have searched me and known me.
26:49
And this word known here in the Hebrew is chata. And it means to know by seeing and seeking out.
26:57
And again, it's a word that means to know intimately. And when you look at some of the places that this word is used, you will find that it is a very intimate knowledge.
27:12
Again, have you ever wondered if God hears you when you pray?
27:18
Have you ever wondered that? Just raise your hand, raise it up high. Okay, look around everybody.
27:24
We're not alone in this, okay? The scripture teaches us not only does he hear you, but he's searching deep within you.
27:36
He's seeing you and he knows your state of being. He knows if you're discouraged, if you're depressed.
27:44
He knows if you're struggling. He knows our needs and he is waiting to help meet those needs.
27:52
He's understanding everything about us. And when we pray, he knows why we're praying what we're praying.
28:01
He fully understands it. This can be comforting or it can be scary.
28:09
Sometimes when I teach this scripture to some of the young people I look with, you can just see the look on their faces like, are you telling me he always sees what
28:20
I'm doing? And he always knows what I'm thinking? Yeah? That can be uncomfortable, right?
28:26
I'm glad we're not mind readers, right? You think there's a lot of violence and fighting on this earth now.
28:32
Just imagine if we could read each other's thoughts, right? Okay, that would not be good, all right?
28:38
But God knows our thoughts. I want you to see a name for God in Romans chapter 8.
28:44
Turn there with me. Romans chapter 8 verse 26. Romans 8, 26 and 27.
29:03
So this is Romans chapter 8. It's written to believers, children of God.
29:09
And he says of us children, verse 26, likewise the spirit helps us in our weakness for we do not know what to pray for as we ought.
29:23
Ah, sometimes maybe it's okay just to be quiet before God and say,
29:28
Holy Spirit, help me to pray. But the spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.
29:38
And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the spirit because the spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.
29:47
Notice what he is called in verse 27. He who searches hearts, the heart searcher.
29:56
This word searched in the Greek here means to investigate, to look at all the details, to have full understanding of what's going on.
30:08
And he is the searcher of hearts. Well, he probably only is just searching out certain people's hearts.
30:19
Not true. All right, you knew the answer to that anyway, but I'm going to show you, okay.
30:26
Turn to 1 Chronicles chapter 28, verse 9. I'm going to go back into the
30:32
Old Testament. So David, King David is speaking to his son
30:38
Solomon. And this is where we're going to pick it up in chapter 28. 1
30:44
Chronicles chapter 28, verse 9.
30:53
And you, Solomon, my son, know the God of your father and serve him with a whole heart and with a willing mind.
31:00
For the Lord searches all hearts and understands every plan and thought.
31:11
The Lord searches all hearts. That Hebrew word for all is the word kol.
31:19
And it means every single one, all hearts. Every human heart.
31:27
He knows our hearts this morning. Whether you're a believer or not, he knows our hearts.
31:36
It's interesting because these words in the Hebrew, I like to look them up in my
31:42
Strong's Concordance. And there are a number of different Hebrew words for search.
31:48
And this is a different word than Psalm 139. And this means to diligently inquire and to make inquisition, to search out.
31:59
So they're all similar. But it comes from a root word that means to tread or frequent.
32:07
To follow for pursuit or search. So it's the idea of a well -traveled path.
32:16
A place where someone often comes. I don't know why, but when I read that definition, it made me think of Facebook.
32:24
Now, I'm not a big Facebook fan. But once in a while, I'll look at it because, you know,
32:31
I want to see what some of our friends are up to. Right? Okay. And so when think about following someone on Facebook, what are you doing?
32:42
Okay. Now, when I look at Cheryl's Facebook account, because I'm old school.
32:47
I don't even do that. But we know the same people. Some of you people. And, you know, you look through and, but who do you really stop on?
32:55
Those that you really care about, right? Okay. You're checking out their posts.
33:00
You're interested. You want to see their pictures. So I like Facebook because my grandkids pop up in Facebook, you know.
33:08
And I get to see some pictures that maybe I wouldn't see otherwise on Facebook. Why do we do this?
33:14
Because we're interested in them. We're following them. Okay. But this goes so much deeper that God is,
33:22
He's diligently inquiring in us. What is going on, my child?
33:29
You're hurrying from there here to there. Give me time. Just sit down with me. Let's talk.
33:35
Let's have a conversation. He is intimately aware of us and our state of being at every moment of every day.
33:46
Notice in Chronicles, it says the Lord searches all hearts, every single heart.
33:54
He knows our hearts inside and out. Not only does He know our hearts, it says, for the
34:01
Lord searches all hearts and understands every plan and thought. This word understand is the
34:08
Hebrew word being. And it means to separate mentally, to understand, to discern, and to perceive.
34:14
It's the idea of a complete understanding. I get it. God understands.
34:21
He knows the human condition. He understands our struggles. It makes me think of Corinthians 13, that there's no temptation that we struggle with that is not common to man.
34:34
And God knows these struggles. I can talk to God like I would talk to no one else about my inner struggles.
34:43
He says He understands every plan and thought. He knows why we're thinking what we're thinking.
34:52
And He knows where that thought's going. He understands our plans, whether they're good or not.
34:57
He knows our hopes, our dreams. And we can talk to Him about them. He knows every thought that we think, good or bad.
35:08
He understands them. Look at one more on this, 1 Kings chapter 8. 1
35:24
Kings chapter 8, verse 39. It says, then here in heaven.
35:38
This is talking about people repenting and turning back to Him. People who have gone after idols and really lost their way.
35:48
And it's talking about people turning back to Him in repentance. It says, then here in heaven, your dwelling place, and forgive and act and render to each whose heart you know according to all his ways.
36:02
For you, you only know the hearts of all the children of mankind.
36:08
There it is right there. No question, no doubt. It says that He knows.
36:14
Look at it. For you, you only know the hearts of all the children of mankind.
36:22
So He knows right where we're at today. And He cares. That's why He's searching us out.
36:31
Because He loves you so much. It's like a parent who really loves their child.
36:36
They're interested in what's going on in their child's life, right? Hebrews 4 .13
36:43
says this. And no creature is hidden from His sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of Him to whom we must give an account.
36:52
Every creature, every living thing is before His eyes because He is the all -seeing, the all -knowing one.
37:02
Turn back now with me to Psalm 139. And you're definitely going to want to keep a bookmarker in there or your finger because we're going to kind of be flipping back and forth.
37:15
He said in verse 1, O Lord, you have searched me and known me. And I love this quote.
37:21
It's from Bible readings in the Psalms. And it says this. What ineffable comfort there is in the thought that our hearts closed to all else are open to Him because as He can detect the secret source of our disease,
37:38
He can cure it. And as He can read our secret sorrow, He can apply the healing balm because He knows.
37:48
He's the one that can heal that broken heart. I love the treasury of David, beautiful commentary on the
37:57
Psalms. Charles Spurgeon called the Prince of Preachers. He said this of Psalm 139 verse 1.
38:04
He said, The true God, Jehovah, understands us and is most intimately acquainted with our persons, nature, and character.
38:13
How well it is for us to know the God who knows us. Yes, He knows you.
38:21
And He longs for you to know Him. The King of the universe, the
38:28
God of all creation says, Come, my child. I want to meet with you.
38:33
I want to speak into your life. I want to help you with that burden that you're carrying.
38:40
I care about you. I love you. I ask you,
38:45
I keep asking you this question. Have you ever wondered if God hears you? Wonder no more.
38:54
This is the word of God. This is truth. He hears you. Look at verse 2.
39:02
What else does He know about us? You know when I sit down and when I rise up and discern my thoughts from afar.
39:11
This says that He sees every move that you make. Wow, think about that one for a minute.
39:19
He knows when I sit down in my green chair in the morning with my cup of coffee and I'm opening up my
39:24
Bible. He knows. I'm going to start with my psalm of the day.
39:30
And I say, Father, please speak to me. I need you so much. I need you so much.
39:38
And then I let Him speak to me and I talk back to Him. See, He knows I'm coming to that quiet place to meet
39:44
Him. Maybe He's saying to you this morning, why won't you give me time?
39:51
I want to meet with you. I know your heart. I know your struggle. I love you. I want to help you with it, but you're not giving me time.
39:59
What else does He know according to this? Verse 2. You discern my thoughts from afar.
40:08
Well, we've been seeing that, right? He knows our thoughts. He knows what we're thinking.
40:14
When I read this, it made me think of the words of Jesus from Matthew 10, 29, and 31.
40:20
I'll just read them for you. Jesus said, hey, look at the sparrows. They're all over the place.
40:25
Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? They're cheap. And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your
40:33
Father. Your heavenly Father is fully aware of a sparrow landing and flying and looking for food.
40:41
But then He says, but even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not, therefore, you are of more value than many sparrows.
40:51
Jesus is saying, your heavenly Father is fully aware of you. He knows how many hairs you have on your head.
40:57
Some of us have more than others. But He knows. Job asked this question, a really important question.
41:06
And it's found in Job 31 .4. He asked this question. He said, does not
41:11
He see my ways and number all my steps? It's 14 steps from my office in my basement to the first floor.
41:21
I count. Sometimes I go up and down, up and down. Cheryl's like, what are you doing? I'm getting a little exercise, you know, come up to get some water.
41:31
Does He not see my ways and number all my steps? I love the way the Bible answers its own questions.
41:37
Okay, if you're reading and you're confused about something in the Word, just stay in the
41:42
Word and God will show you. He'll make it clear to you what the answer is. In Job 34 .21,
41:49
it says, for His eyes are on the ways of man and He sees all his steps.
41:55
Yes, He sees every move. That's how fully aware that He is of us.
42:03
He sees the good, the bad, and the ugly. Unfortunately, He sees it all.
42:10
He knows it all. It says, you discern my thoughts.
42:18
This word thought, it can mean a single thought, but it also means what that thought is leading to or where it's going.
42:27
What the idea is behind the thought. He knows, this is saying that He knows every thought that we think.
42:36
Isn't that crazy? Seriously, I mean, I've known this revelation for a while, but for like the last three weeks as I've been studying this out, it's helped my thinking.
42:50
Like, wait a minute, what am I thinking? And I'll turn my thoughts back to Him because He's fully aware.
42:57
He's fully present. He lives within us as children of God. We're temples of the Holy Spirit.
43:02
The Word says, well, this is good news. It really is because I can pray without even raising my voice.
43:13
There are times where it's not probably a good idea to pray out loud. Oh, Father, calm me down right now because I'm about to get really mad at my wife and you just said that out loud and she's like, what?
43:27
No, all right. In your heart,
43:32
Father, calm me down. Not that Cheryl has ever liked that at all because I'm super blessed.
43:38
She never ever makes me angry. Well, maybe a couple of times, but not very often.
43:44
It's pretty rare. I better get off of that subject right away because that is not going anywhere.
43:51
Good. I love my wife. We've been married 36 years. How about that?
43:57
He discerns our thoughts. He fully understands them. He hears them. He sees them.
44:03
Remember Chronicles 28, 9, it said this, For the Lord searches all hearts and understands every plan and every thought.
44:12
Every thought. Wow, that is mind boggling. Like he knows
44:18
I can talk to him in my heart. I can talk to him anywhere, anytime. Man, that person gets on my bumper.
44:27
Oh, no, don't you touch that brake, okay? Don't you give him a dirty look.
44:33
You hear that little voice? I just say, Father, help me to pay attention to the road and keep this person from hurting somebody.
44:41
And then that anger level just goes right down and I just focus on my driving. I just said a prayer in my heart because he is an ever -present help.
44:49
It says in the Psalms, In the days of Noah, things were going bad on earth.
44:57
Like crazy bad, okay? So bad that God said, Man, I got to start over.
45:03
This is awful. And he, keep in mind, he knows every thought.
45:09
He sees every deed, right? And listen to what it says of God during this time before the flood.
45:17
In Genesis 6, 5 and 6, it says this, The Lord saw the wickedness of man was great in the earth and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
45:28
And the Lord regretted that he had made man on earth and it grieved him in his heart. God was so grieved.
45:36
He was hearing all of those evil, wicked thoughts. He was seeing all those evil, wicked deeds.
45:42
But you know what? He also saw Noah, didn't he? And he found this man who was true to him and his family.
45:49
And we know the rest of the story. He helped him build that ark and he saved his family and God started over.
45:55
But God was grieved. And I had to ask myself this question, Is God sometimes grieved with the way
46:02
I think? With the way I think about people? With some of the thoughts that come into my mind?
46:11
And the answer is yes. We're told don't grieve the Spirit.
46:17
It's New Testament believers because he lives in us. We got to change our way of thinking some ways, don't we?
46:25
Some of us. I'm not pointing any fingers, okay? I know this really spoke to me, but there's good news.
46:35
It says this in Ezekiel, I will sprinkle clean water on you and you shall be clean from all your uncleanness.
46:42
And from all your idols, I will cleanse you. I will give you a new heart and a new spirit I will put within you.
46:48
And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my spirit within you.
46:55
Jesus made this possible. Jesus, he said, I came to heal the brokenhearted.
47:02
He changes our way of thinking. I remember when I became his son, I was 20 years old.
47:08
I had a foul mouth because I just got so used to cussing. And I said,
47:17
Father, transform me, change us. He had to transform me on the inside, didn't he?
47:23
He had to change my way of thinking and he's done that, okay? You may be trapped in some really negative type thinking, but God can heal and transform that.
47:33
He is the healer. He is the transformer. He can make us new on the inside.
47:43
That's what's got to happen really for me every day. I get wore down. I get beat down.
47:48
I get, we get flooded by the filth of this world, don't we? Okay. And I need to,
47:56
Father, cleanse me. Forgive me, Lord. Renew me.
48:03
Wash my heart. Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God, Jesus said in Matthew 5, 8.
48:14
I like this verse. Look at verse 4 in Psalm 139. Even before a word is on my tongue, behold,
48:22
O Lord, you know it all together. He knows what
48:27
I'm going to say before I say it. Should I question whether he is hearing my prayer?
48:35
You know what this word teaches? It teaches he's already hearing every single word that comes out of your mouth.
48:43
Jesus, he said, hey, be careful. What you say. In Matthew 12, 36 and 37,
48:51
Jesus said this. I tell you on the day of judgment, people will give an account for every careless word they speak.
49:00
For by your words, you will be justified and by your words, you will be condemned.
49:07
Why are we going to be judged by careless words? Because he hears them. He hears every unkind word we say.
49:15
Every off color joke. Every gossip and talking behind somebody's back.
49:22
He hears it. He knows it. He says, I know what you're going to say before you.
49:29
So I like this. I like it because I know how much I need him and I know how much
49:35
I need him to hear my prayers. And he's hearing me talk to him, driving my car, walking from here to there, sitting in my chair, laying upon my pillow.
49:52
Talk to him. He'll hear you any place, anytime. Because he is the all -knowing, the all -hearing one.
50:01
He knows it all together. Yes, God hears us. God knows us.
50:07
He sees us. He says, call upon me and I will answer you.
50:13
And I will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known. Jeremiah 33 .3
50:20
He says, before they call, I will answer. While they are yet speaking, I will hear.
50:26
So yes, he hears us. Let's pray. Let's seek him. Be encouraged.
50:32
He is the ever -present, all -knowing one. Charles Spurgeon said this, and I just,
50:39
I had to put it in my notes because it's so good. Of this psalm, he said, Me thou knowest in all that comes of me.
50:47
I am observed when I quietly sit down and marked when I resolutely rise up. My most common and casual acts, my most needful and necessary movements are noted by thee.
50:59
And thou knowest the inward thoughts which regulate them, whether I sink in lowly self -renunciation or ascend in pride.
51:07
Thou seest the motions of my mind as well as those of my body. This is a fact to be remembered every moment.
51:16
Sitting down to consider or rising up to act, we are still seen and known and read by Jehovah our
51:23
God. Yes, he sees us and he knows us. Verse three, you search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways.
51:35
This word search here, where it says he searches out my path, it's the word they use for winnowing.
51:41
That means a lot, right, to us non -Israeli wheat sifters, okay?
51:46
What they would do is they would take their wheat and they would grind the hulls off and then they would throw it up in the wind and the wind would blow the shaft away and you would get to the good stuff.
51:57
And it's as if God is saying, I'm searching through your day. I'm searching through your life.
52:05
I'm looking for the good stuff. What could he be sifting through?
52:10
Could it be just a smile? Father, I love you. Just a brief word of praise.
52:17
Just a word of thanksgiving, a prayer for help. I wonder how many times he's there.
52:23
Oh, my daughter, I can help you with that. Will you let me? I got it,
52:29
I got it. And we're struggling through it and he's there and he's ready to help us.
52:38
What is he looking for? A really good read is The Practice of the
52:44
Presence of God if you've never read it. It was written by a humble man who worked in a monastery in the 1600s.
52:51
And it's all about living your life in the presence of God. And this is what he said. He said, God requires no great matter of us.
52:58
A little remembrance of him from time to time. A little adoration. Sometimes to pray for grace.
53:04
Sometimes to offer him your sufferings. Sometimes to return him thanks for the favors he has given you and still gives you in the midst of your troubles.
53:14
To console yourself in him as often as you can. Lift up your heart to him. Sometimes even at your meals when you are in company.
53:24
The least little remembrance will always be acceptable to him. You need not cry very loud for he is near to us than we are aware of.
53:36
Yes, he sifts through our path and our lying down. There's a word for this.
53:44
It's called omniscience. God is the omniscient one. He's the all -knowing one.
53:51
Next week, we're going to kind of look at that attribute of next. Excuse me. We're looking at that attribute today, aren't we?
53:58
Omniscience. Next week, we're going to look at the omnipresence of God, okay? That explains how can he have this knowledge of all of us at the same time?
54:10
Because he is the ever -present one. Let me wrap this up.
54:15
It says in verse 5, You hem me in and behind and you lay your hand upon me.
54:22
What is this saying? It's saying that he surrounds us. That's what it's saying.
54:32
You hem me in. This is a Hebrew word that means to close in completely, to enclose, okay?
54:40
You know, just think of a sandwich bag. And you put that sandwich in and then you zip it up.
54:46
That sandwich is totally enclosed in that sandwich bag. That's what this word means. And that he is behind us.
54:55
He's got your back. He's protecting you. He's got your path before you.
55:01
He knows you're lying down. He's acquainted with all of our ways. Psalm 46, 1 and 2.
55:07
God is our refuge and strength, the very present help in trouble. Therefore, we will not fear.
55:14
Yes, because he is ever -present. And he loves us and he knows us. He is the omniscient one.
55:21
He is the omnipresent one. He surrounds us. He hems us in behind and before.
55:28
And then it says that he lays his hand upon us. Verse 5.
55:36
You lay your hand upon us. His hand of affection. His hand of comfort.
55:42
His hand of guidance. His hand of protection. Jesus said this to his disciples, to his children.
55:53
Fear not, or excuse me. I give them eternal life and they shall never perish.
55:58
No one shall snatch them out of my hand. My father who has given them to me is greater than all.
56:03
And no one is able to snatch them out of my father's hand. He says,
56:09
I've got you in my hand. That's what Jesus says. And then he says, you're also in my father's hand.
56:15
That's a really good place to be, right? I have to remind myself. I don't have to live in fear because God is with me.
56:24
Isaiah 41, 10. Fear not, he says, for I'm with you. Be not dismayed, for I am your
56:29
God. I will strengthen you. I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
56:35
He's got you in his hand. He loves you. He knows what's up with you. Just a couple simple applications in closing.
56:44
Realize that he's the omniscient one. That this is the truth. He knows your every thought. He knows you inside and out.
56:51
He fully knows your struggles and he understands them. He knows our heartaches and our fears.
56:56
He knows your needs and stands ready to help. Number two, realize that this omniscient one hears every thought that you think and every word that you speak.
57:08
And certainly when you call on his name, he is going to be listening.
57:14
That should change the way maybe that we pray sometimes. Like he is fully engaged.
57:21
He's fully aware. We have his full attention. Number three, seek to live your life in light of this truth.
57:29
I am always in his presence. He sees me every moment. He hears me at every moment.
57:35
Because of this truth, I will seek him daily, knowing that he is there and that he is waiting.
57:43
Yeah, he hears our prayers, doesn't he? Amen, right? You already knew that though, didn't you? Right, but I hope this encouraged you to really like, wow, he knows every thought that I think.
57:54
That is wow. That's wow. Like you said, it's too wonderful.
57:59
I can't quite grasp this. Or it could be really, really scary. And that would mean that you need to get some things right with God.
58:05
You need to get your heart right with him. And he's ready to forgive and cleanse and heal and transform.
58:12
So at this time, we're going to go into communion. And Dan is gonna come up and lead us in that.
58:21
Dan, thank you. Thank you,
58:29
Bill. That was really encouraging. Every week at Recast, at the end of the service, we have communion.
58:36
And it's just a good reminder every week to remember the sacrifice that Christ made on our behalf.
58:43
And if you're a believer, we would invite you to go to one of the four tables in the back and take the cracker and the juice.
58:51
And what we're doing is we're remembering Christ's body that was broken for us.
58:56
And then also the juice represents the blood that he had shed for us. Let's pray.
59:04
Heavenly Father, we thank you that in your word, it says that Christ who knew no sin became sin for us so that we might become the righteousness of God.
59:15
We thank you. And we ask that you would help us this week to be the type of people that are grateful for what you've done for us.
