Hey everyone, it's John from AuroreNoMore .com, and I want to share some problems I had with Stephen Hawking's new book,
The Grand Design. I just read it a couple weeks ago, and I'd like to say that it does a good job breaking down some physics concepts.
So if you want to buy it for that, then go for it, but there's probably better books out there. The problem I have is his basic thesis is that there's no need for God, because M -theory, or the string theory, explains everything, because there are multiple universes, and therefore, with multiple universes, ours is not special in its complexity.
Three problems I have with this. Number one, it fails to talk about the preconditions of intelligibility, or give a good answer for them.
How come we can even intelligently talk about such subjects, the laws of logic, uniformity of nature, our understanding and our senses?
He just assumes these things are legitimate on the outset. Number two, he talks about philosophy being dead, and science being the way to answer things.
Well, the problem is that his book is really on physics theory, which is philosophy. So he cuts off the branch he's sitting on.
Number three, there's this mechanism called M -theory, which creates the multiple universes, yet that very mechanism is so complex, it requires a designer.
So he actually never really answers the question that he's intending to answer, and his argument thus is fallacious.
I have a lot more about this, including links to other apologists who have talked about it, on my blog. Go to the link below in the info bar, roarnomore .com.
