And we hope to hear from you the listener with your own questions, and now here's your host

Wade Today we have on the program a returning guest that I'm delighted to interview one of the most gracious Brothers that I have ever met
Tom Buck who is senior pastor of First Baptist Church Lindale, Texas and a board member of g3 ministries today
We are going to be addressing an assessment of the 2022 Southern Baptist Convention annual meeting are there any signs of hope for the world's largest
Baptist denomination and we're also going to see how the overturning of Roe V Wade fits in with our discussion today
But it's my honor and privilege to welcome you back to iron sharpens iron radio Tom Buck It's great to be with you
Chris. Thanks for having me my pleasure brother for the sake of our listeners who have
Not yet heard you on this program or may be unfamiliar with you. Tell our listeners about First Baptist Church of Lindale, Texas Well, I'm the senior pastor here in East Texas at First Baptist Church, Lindale I've been here for 16 years as a little over 16 years as the senior pastor and we are a

Amen, if anybody wants more details on this fine church in Lindale, Texas go to FBC for First Baptist Church Lindale, which is spelled l i n d a l e dot com
F BC Lindale dot -com well You and I are both rejoicing along with every other true
Christian globally that Roe v. Wade Has been overturned.
I'm sure that our brothers and sisters even outside of the 50 states of the
United States of America are also thrilled to hear this news and If you could tell us exactly
What was going through your mind today and especially in regard to the
Southern Baptist Convention? Well, I was obviously ecstatic to hear the news
This is something that we have prayed for for many years Abortion has been
Legal in this country for most of my life I'm thankful here in the state of Texas that They had already put into place a law that the moment that the
Supreme Court made this decision within if and when they did make the decision that Abortion would be outlawed from the point of conception.
So we live in a state in 30 days There will be we live in a state that will have completely abolished abortion and any doctor who performs of abortion would be guilty of murder and so it's exactly what should be it's the there needs to be equal protection for the unborn and Here in the state of Texas.
That's exactly what we're moving towards and in the Southern Baptist Convention it is
Exposing a lot right now. It's exposing What people's true views are regarding?
abortion those who have been giving lip service to What it means to be pro -life and those who are truly pro -life as God's Word would define it
Well, I obviously share your joy and enthusiasm now
I Guess we'll eventually get to specifically How you are troubled why you are troubled
About an element a very significant element in the Southern Baptist Convention That would actually have mixed feelings about what occurred today, but Let's start off with exactly what occurred at the least and that the recent 2022
Southern Baptist Convention annual meeting some of the things that It was designed to accomplish.
I know that You and I both were saddened that our mutual friend
Tom Askell was not elected president there but if you could continue what were the main reasons that meeting took place and tell us your analysis of it and of course the subtitle of today's program is are there any signs of hope for the world's largest
Baptist denomination, but Continue about the primary reasons this meeting took place
Well, it was the annual convention of the Southern Baptist that We're all the autonomous
Baptist churches that gather and comment as messengers. I think there was only 3 ,500 of the 47 ,000 churches that actually sent messengers, which is disappointing
We would love love for there to be more But we gather together every year
This particular year to elect a new president the main Contenders were
Bart Barber and Tom Askell and there were two very distinct Different visions for the convention
Bart Barber who? Is theologically conservative I would say some may disagree with me on that, but I believe that to be the case
He does not see that there is any drift in the SBC He's quite confident in the present leadership in the
Southern Baptist Convention and that the convention is going in a good direction Tom Askell who is theologically conservative and also
In my opinion a leader who sees the real issues in the SBC believe that the convention is going in in a wrong direction
That although that although there may not be full -blown theological liberals and that seems to be how
Bart Barber defines it such as Someone denying the virgin birth or denying the inerrancy of Scripture Askell nor I would say that that we're that we know of anybody that would would say those things in the
SBC There is certainly a drift theologically particularly in the area of Denial or Not practicing a true or not clearly practicing a belief in the sufficiency of Scripture there is an ongoing push for ideology that is comes from Critical race theory and as well as a proliferation of women pastors in the convention and so there were two very different views and one major issue that was that did come up in the convention and we were waiting to come up with a recommendation from the credentials committee who determines whether Southern Baptist churches are in fellowship or in I should say
Friendly cooperation with the convention and whether that we can continue to fellowship with them or disfellowship them
And so last year at in 2021, it was presented at the convention for the credentials committee to Remove Saddleback Church Rick Warren is the pastor there and they had just recently back in May of 2021 ordained three women as pastors and so we were waiting for The credentials committee to come back in 2022 at this convention to tell us what their findings and recommendations were and There was some mistreatment
Against you and your precious wife who I've had the pleasure to meet on several occasions when we have bumped into each other providentially at various Bible conferences
Around the country. Can you tell us about the whole situation involving that? Yeah, it's a pretty long and complex story
But one of the things that the convention was addressing as well as this year as well
Was waiting for the sex abuse task force report to come out last year. They had appointed a task force to To address and seek to discover what issues there were within the convention regarding Those who had a past With sexual abuse and whether they were being allowed to serve
Within the the convention and so I had addressed An issue within our own convention where the the person that was running at the time for president, which was
Willie Rice Clearwater Baptist Church Calvary Baptist Church in Clearwater that he actually had someone serving in his church that had a predatory past and When I went and confronted him with that to let him know that because he told me he had no knowledge of that It ended up leading to me being accused of being political for what
I did And then someone attacked my wife and me in trying to smear me or has a retaliation for having brought that issue forward and Then when we tried to address that at the convention, they shut us down.
So even though my wife Was one who had suffered abuse in her own life they didn't consider her a survivor that was worth listening to Wow, and that is quite remarkable when considering that the
Southern Baptist Convention Seems to lean towards avoiding avoiding any appearance of Of misogyny about lack of concern for women and that kind of thing
Why on earth did they take that approach? Well, one of the things that we discovered after There had been this attack on on my wife and me
Was that there was a direct connection to the
Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary Karen Swallow Pryor Had been involved in reading or helping edit and Give feedback.
That's what my wife had sought from her on an article that Jennifer had written about Issues in our marriage early on That was over 30 years ago
That's what they had released to the media to try to smear us because it had never been published and the only person who had a copy of that that we'd given a copy of it to was
Karen Swallow Pryor and when They were seeking to publish that without our knowledge.
They went to Karen Pryor they went to the provost of Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary to get their help and Even though they didn't help them
The no one in the seminary alerted us that someone was trying to smear us in this way
They didn't come to my wife to let her know that her article had been stolen. And so when we went to them to get answers
We were calling for an investigation of the individuals who were involved in this and the powers that be in the
Southern Baptist Convention decided that they were not going to do an investigation and When my wife went to the floor to ask about that they shut her down and would not even let her talk
Wow amazing stuff now obviously a lot of concern
Has been on the rise over the Southern Baptist Convention Including issues involving
Its greatest seminary the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky Where there has been?
anywhere ranging from a softness on the woke movement critical race theory
The social justice movement and so on all the way from a softness on it to an outright militant
Declaring and defending of those things What if anything was resolved at this meeting in regards to those issues
Well, I don't know that there was really anything even addressed about those issues at this particular
Convention that was really last year that we tried to address with critical race theory now We'll say that I and a couple of other pastors put a fourth a resolution to Condemn critical race theory, but the resolutions committee rejected our resolution that didn't did not even bring it to the floor
So it there is no doubt that the Southern Baptist at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary That there have been those who have outright
Taught and promoted the ideology of critical race theory. They've done it by name But dr.
Mohler has has seemed to have taken a very strong stance at least publicly dealing with these things in in recent months and The even the provost who was pushing that Matthew Hall who was pushing that at Southern Seminary and taught it
He has now left Southern Seminary And and went to another college.
I just can't can't remember where it was So I'm not going to mention the name and accidentally get the wrong name
So we're I'm hoping that there is a change At Southern Seminary it seems to be that there is but at Southeastern Seminary critical race theory is alive and well
So well, it's good news that for some reason I have not heard the good news that you just said
That the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and specifically its president Al Mohler is taking a stronger stance against critical race theory and all of those things that come under the umbrella of the social justice warrior movement because From what
I understand The faculty there including dr. Mohler Did not sign the statement on social justice in the gospel that your colleague
Josh Bice and you and others were involved in drafting That's correct.
And you know, there are those that would disagree with me regarding my View on dr.
Mohler's current stance. I don't know why in his heart of hearts. He did not sign that statement
I certainly wish that he had I wish he would he still could I think he I think he should or if he feels there's
That it needs to be strengthened in some way then come out and say I agree with everything that's there and here's how
I would strengthen it but I'm hopeful that that what
I'm saying is the case there have been some changes You know that have happened at Southern Seminary that I think are very hopeful regarding those things
And if you listen to dr. Mohler speak on these issues He does speak very clearly right now in my opinion regarding Anti -crt and I woke ideology
So, I don't know what prevented him or is preventing him from signing that statement now, what is it what are the circumstances that you believe?
Have provoked a stronger stance against critical race theory and And has caused dr.
Mohler to be more in line in alignment with you and and Josh Bice and others against this
Heretical movement in the church. Yeah, again, it's kind of hard to read what a per you know
Impossible to read what person's heart is hard to you know Assign motives. I know that when resolution 9
Came out. I know firsthand that he was He was concerned before it went to the
Florida vote he felt it needed to be they should be rejected What was was sad in my opinion is that he did not publicly address that until after it passed
He had an opportunity to do that. He didn't he didn't I know that Curtis woods who was a faculty member at that time?
Was one of the proponents of resolution 9 But doctor and that may have
Prevented him from feeling comfortable standing up and saying something against it, but I think he missed an important moment there, too he could
I think if he had spoken up it would have stopped resolution 9 for passing and I wished he had so I don't know if what's happened is that Maybe he did not think it was as big of an issue as we were claiming it was in The convention maybe he was ignorant of what if some of his own
Own professors were teaching at the time He apparently had to be ignorant that Curtis woods was pushing that so I don't know what his motives are
But there is no doubt that he Was saying some things privately
Regarding concerns, but not saying things publicly He has shifted to start saying things more publicly now, but it feels in some
Respects that is too little too late in the sense of how it's been affecting the Southern Baptist Convention in recent years well, let's
I Hate to use Jen Psaki's phrase, but let's circle back to the significance of the overturning of Roe v.
Wade and get your assessment on the Southern Baptist Convention's Views of abortion would there be a dominance of total abolition are there those that have
Serious reservations because they want a number of qualifications to be inserted that would prevent the so -called right of a woman to Murder her unborn child to to You know, they want to make sure that there are
Legal means by which there are some reasons why that would be acceptable, etc so if you could explain
Especially for those of us who I've never been a Southern Baptist and only For the most part my closest friends
Who are Southern Baptists or people more in alignment with you? So tell me about the
Landscape as it were of the Southern Baptist Convention on this issue and and what came up at this meeting in regard to that Well, you'd have to go back again to 2020
Last year a resolution came forward for the abolition complete abolition of abortion and It was quite a heated debate.
In fact, one of the the members of the URL C stood up and opposed it They were saying it was anti pro -life was under undermining the pro -life movement if you will
Because the it it denounced the resolution denounced all I think again so I'd want to go back and look but denounced all forms of incrementalism so to speak and so There began this debate about is there any?
Any type of incrementalism that is not unjust. So in other words that if you if you get a law that an incremental law that limits
Abortion at certain periods such as a heartbeat bill that it's really an unjust law because you're still
In the having in the law Allowing for the murder of children prior to a heartbeat and in other words not a conception not protecting them at conception
So that began a debate in the Southern Baptist Convention regarding that There were those like myself who
Rejoice any time that any life is saved Even if an incremental bill is passed we rejoice in the lives that are saved
But we're not happy unless and don't believe that true justice has been done
Unless there's total abolishment of abortion So I didn't realize how weak in my opinion some of those in the
Southern Baptist Convention are Regarding the the view on the abolishment of abortion
But all of that is so to speak water under the bridge now there were to 2022 because now we're at the point that We know that new going into the convention that Roe v.
Wade may very well be overturned You would expect the Ethics and Religious Liberties Commission of the
Southern Baptist Convention to Fully rejoice in Roe v. Wade and to fight for equal protection for the unborn
But instead we're getting these very weak soft responses such as the
The leader of the ERLC Brent Leatherwood got up at the convention and said you will never get me to say that a mother should be put in prison for an abortion well
That's Unbelievable that they don't want to hold a mother who willingly and that's the key
We're not saying there's not other circumstances just like in our current laws regarding homicide
There are there could be different levels of culpability Based upon what the actions of that person was but if a woman willingly murders her unborn child
Knowingly willingly does that why would she not? Be charged with murder because that's what she has committed and But yet the
ERLC said they will not Will not ever Say that that there's no circumstance in which they would ever say that a mother who murders her unborn child should be
Criminally charged that's astounding to me that the world's largest Protestant dominant denomination the ethical arm of that denomination is unwilling to make such a judgment and Now their slogan is make abortion unnecessary
Which again that's astounding so another word they're using is Unimaginable Karen solo prior today who used to be on who is a professor at Southeastern Seminary I have a theological seminary used to be with the
ERLC said today that we need to make abortion unimaginable the reality is
Is that the the sixth commandment that he says thou shalt make? murder unimaginable
No, it's a it's a straight command and there are consequences though One who sheds blood is is
Their blood is to be shed themselves or should they should pay that that price
The judgment should be upon them including I would say the death penalty for anyone Who willingly murders another person whether they're in the womb or out of the womb?
It's stunning to me that they would use words like unnecessary a murder is never necessary And then they go on to explain that what they mean by that is that we need to be providing for unwed mothers
The the kind of care that would not even make them want to think of having an abortion
And although I believe we certainly should be Caring for those who are in need we certainly should as churches and Christians doing what we can through adoption through Other means by which to help those who have
Or Maybe even thinking about Terminating their child of course we want to help them
See that that we can provide means for them to not make that choice so to speak
But either way at the end of the day the issue is that that murder is murder And it's not whether we provide those
Where we provide money for them or support for them or friends for them or whatever it may be that it never ever makes murder necessary And we're not culpable on any
I'm never culpable for another person who commits murder because I did not give them a certain level of help that may be the
Social justice movement thinks needs to be given now. I don't know if you've ever heard
You know all the different reasons by those that oppose
The Prosecution of women who murder their children in abortion
The the issues or the arguments might range anywhere from They think it's a bad
A bad strategy in the ultimate ending of all abortion because they are fearful that America is far too feminized to accept that kind of Inclusion in anti -abortion laws the the the actual criminalizing of it or Are they
Even worse just saying it because they are somehow trying to defend a woman in her choice in doing that and her culpability in that even though they disagree with That choice.
I mean, I'm not sure What would be the weight of the argument there to be opposed to the absolute criminalizing of this?
Well, the church is supposed to be a prophetic voice to the culture not a strategic voice
Amen. So our goal is not to help the culture understand what the best strategy is regarding how to bring people into submission to God's law
Our responsibility is to declare God's truth to call upon people to repent
To help them see that if they think listen, there's something much worse than criminal charges on earth
There's eternal judgment the wrath of God that they're going to say. Amen. And as a church, what other voice is there?
In this world that's going to speak this truth to the world if it's not the church if the church is trying to act through political strategies
Instead of a prophetic voice to a lost and and dying culture we're in bad shape that woman needs to know she's murdering her child and There's no hope of the gospel if they don't understand the gravity of their sin
Amen, and I was pleasantly surprised to hear from my friend
Jeff Durbin Who is one of the most actively involved? pastors
I know in The fight to abolish abortion in this country right in the front lines
Jeff not long ago informed me the good news that Abby Johnson the former
Planned Parenthood worker. She was actually a clinical or clinic director of Planned Parenthood and resigned back in 2009
After witnessing an abortion on ultrasound She in her journey into the pro -life movement
Initially was against Criminalization, but Jeff told me that she is now in favor of it, which
I'm very ecstatic to hear I'll be too. I had not heard that praise the
Lord because I mean How are we going to stop abortion if there is not a a just penalty?
For the unjust act you if if it's injustice Then there's you only have justice if those who have committed this unjust act are held accountable
To the level that God calls for them them to be held accountable for to Otherwise, it's not true.
Justice. It's not simply justice to stop Abortion or to make it illegal.
It's only just if those who could who commit abortion Are held fully accountable to the fullest extent of the law as God's Word would reveal to us the level to which they are to be held accountable
Amen, and we have to go to our first break right now. If anybody has a question For my guest today

Tom? Well, the g3 conference began Over a decade ago.
Dr. Josh by who's a good friend of mine. I'm thankful for him pastor of praise meal Baptist Church in Georgia, and he had a vision to start a
Theological conference and he did that and that has grown in attendance to the point that God has given the opportunity and and For Josh to begin a ministry where that not only do they hold the conference?
But in addition to that they have a network of churches that you can Become a part of as a like -minded church called the g3 network
Which is a great place for a lot of us who are Trying to figure out what we do if we're no longer a part of the
SBC where we can have fellowship and good partnership So the g3 network of churches is there there is a publishing ministry now with g3 press that is publishing a good material for churches and Then there is a lot of other vision that is taking place regarding g3 ministries regarding hopefully in the future

We have a listener Jordan in Jacksonville, Texas And I think
Jordan is a first -time questioner if I'm not mistaken and He says
I know the sentiment among many conservative Southern Baptists is to remain in the convention
To help steer it in the right direction. I too felt this way having been a
Southern Baptist entrenched in the battle between conservativism and liberalism in Texas At what point though do we realize the house is not merely on fire but has burned down why remain in the convention when there are more biblically structured groups such as the mission the
Baptist Missionary Association of America or ARPA I Myself have found a home with the
BMA of America Well, I love the BMA I have a our church has a strong relationship with him
In fact in Jacksonville, Texas is where the BMA Theological Seminary is. I have taught there and and a strong supporter of that Seminary a dr.
Charlie Holmes is the president there just a fine man of God who has led well
So our church in fact here at First Baptist prior to joining the convention
For the first 50 years I think of our existence was a part of the BMA So there are certainly
Good Baptist associations that you could be a part of and not be a part of the Southern Baptist Convention I think that each church is going to have to make decisions based upon based on what's going on the convention of whether they feel that they can continue to Partner with the convention or what that partnership is going to look like I've tried for the last few years
To speak out to bring potentially bring reform to the Southern Baptist Convention That has been met with opposition at every turn in fact in 2018
I spoke out and said that there was a I feared with the election of J .D. Greer that there was going to be a redefining of Complementarianism that the next
SPC resurgence was going to involve the proliferation
Proliferation of women preachers and pastors. I was mocked in 2018 and scorned for saying that But no doubt everything
I was saying was has come true to where that we have in this last convention
The credentials committee comes out and says that they they want to do a year study to determine
What is a pastor because they did not have the intestinal fortitude? To step up and say that Rick Warren's church should be disfellowshipped because they have women pastors that have been ordained so I'm more disillusioned than I ever have been with what's going on in the convention and our church has a task force that we formed
That will bring back a recommendation to the church body in August of what our future
Partnership with the SPC will or will not look like well
Thank You Jordan, and please give us your full mailing address in Jacksonville, Texas Because you have won a free new
American Standard Bible by virtue of the fact that you're a first -time questioner And that is our tradition here in the show to provide new copies new
NS and ASB Bibles to our first -time questioners we have a
Listener who actually is heard in one of our new American Standard Bible Commercials we have
Tim Bushong of past who is pastor of the Syracuse Baptist Church in Syracuse, Indiana and I usually don't mention the entire name of an individual but when a person is a pastor of a church that I Can hardly recommend
I like to give them a plug when possible Pastor Tim says
Let's see, what would be a bridge too far for you
Where's the line in the sand for a Southern Baptist Convention exit for Tom Buck and obviously?
That's really what Jordan? Jordan from Jacksonville, Texas just asked
Tim is being more blunt and precise and to the point And maybe
I'll even throw in something of my own When is remaining a
Southern Baptist a violation of 2nd Corinthians 614? Do not be yoked together with unbelievers
Well some of this as you said kind of goes to the question that was asked before and I guess one thing I would say In addition to to that particular question is that you know, any good
Baptist is not going to tell another Baptist Church Necessarily what to do. There's the autonomy of the local church
Unless it's just clear black and white. So then we get into that. Where's the bridge too far? When you ask where's the bridge too far for Tom Buck?
We have to remember that, you know, I pastor a Southern Baptist Church that and a
Baptist Church that is congregational And so we're not elder rule. And so I'm doing my best to help
Educate and bring my church up to speed our congregation has to vote on whether we we are going to participate and at what level of participation or none at all that we would have to set up the
Southern we would have have with the Southern Baptist Convention now that being said I'm not trying to bait the question but I do want to be careful as well because My church members who many of them may be and I hope are listening need to have confidence that I'm going to let the congregation
Make that final decision, but I'm going to guide the conversation So bridges too far for me are some of the very things that we're seeing right now
That if the convention continues to go in this soft Taking a soft position on abortion.
That's a bridge too far. I think it's already probably there I think their inability to stand firm as a yes women
Preaching or being either having the title role or the function of a pastor is a bridge too far
And we certainly are already there in in some capacities in the SPC So I'm at the edge of that bridge right now and I you know, if it was my decision alone
There might be a different way that I would make that decision But I'm certainly calling upon my church now to say look at these issues.
These issues are black and white You don't have to deny Deny inerrancy and deny and deny the virgin birth to be a liberal that I'm unwilling to The only type of liberals that would be unwilling to partner with I think there are some serious issues
It is more than just the house on fire at the SPC it is burning rapidly and If it's not already at the ground,
I think it's getting very close Well, thank you Pastor Tim and although I have known you for years
I don't know if you've ever submitted a question before so if you're a first -time questioner give me your full mailing address so that we can ship a free
New American Standard Bible out to you and I'd like to plug Tim's church it is all there or the website.
I should say Syracuse Baptist Church comm Syracuse Baptist Church comm and that is the website for Syracuse Baptist Church of Syracuse, Indiana.

Chris Arnson at gmail .com. Give us your first name at least your city and state And your country of residence.
We have one of our most faithful and generous Supporters of iron sharpens iron radio who has submitted a question
His name is Grady in Asheboro, North Carolina And I hope
I see Grady at the upcoming g3 conference as I do Most of the time when
I go to the g3 conferences Greetings brothers, even though I'm not a member of the Southern Baptist Convention.
I grew up Southern Baptist my great -great grandfather Donated land for two
Southern Baptist churches I have several brothers and sisters in Christ still in the
Southern Baptist Convention churches And I'm heartbroken over what I have seen from the leadership in the last few conventions.
They have cut off conservative biblical Christians from having a voice they have lied plagiarized and Have been deceitful from my point of view
It appears to me that the Southern Baptist Convention is reaping the consequences
From all of the easy believism from many years past Members have put men in positions of leadership because they weren't biblically grounded
Do you agree with my assessment praying for you your family and church family? That's a very good question.
He Grady is Asking if there is a theological root to this problem a habitual problem in the
Southern Baptist Convention and as you know and as every single
Southern Baptist pastor that I highly respect knows the issue of unregenerate membership is rampant in the in the
Southern Baptist Convention and and really in the Bible Belt because it since Christianity in its most nominal form permeates the
Bible Belt people think that they're born again just because they come from generations of Baptists or Pentecostals or Presbyterians or Methodists or whatever the case may be and So is there any?
Validity do you think in and Grady's assertion here? I Think he's completely spot -on
We are reaping what we have sown I would say if we were to put a word upon The problem within the
Southern Baptist Convention that has been rampant That was the case prior to the conservative resurgence and has remained to be the case
It would be pragmatism Pragmatism has Constantly plagued the
Southern Baptist Convention and that's why we're still having Problems now, even though you have everyone saying hey, we believe in inerrancy
And we're not like those Liberals or moderates or whatever word they wanted to call them
Around the time at the conservative resurgence we're okay, we're not what we believe in inerrancy, but they still believe in pragmatism and That is part of part of the problem.
We have regarding and a regenerate membership because you have within the Southern Baptist Convention still today as you had prior to the resurgence an emphasis upon only one part of the
Great Commission and so they think At least in the way that they act that the Great Commission ends with baptizing them in the name of the
Father and the Son the Holy Spirit they ignore the fact that what follows is teaching them to observe all that I've commanded them and That seems to be absolutely irrelevant in in Southern Baptist life today
So he mentioned plagiarism We had a president. Thank God.
He is no longer the president, but nobody wanted to deal with it while he was We have a president who shouldn't just simply resign as president of Southern Baptist Convention But should be disciplined out of any he shouldn't even be a member of any local church
Not because he committed plagiarism per se but because he's unrepentant about the plagiarism that he did commit
He lied about it. He continues to cover up about it. He continues to call what is clear sin a mistake.
So Not only should he not be president he shouldn't be a member and yet nobody cares about that.
That's Ed Litton Yeah, and he was the one that had a little nasty exchange with you.
Didn't he at the convention? Well, we've had several nasty exchanges on his end. I've been forthright about what the issues are with him
He blocked me on Twitter some time ago because he doesn't like to be called out for the sin that he commits
Has committed and continues to cover up but yes He he was the one who shut both me and my wife down on the floor
But what's far a far greater concern to me is not his treatment of me but his mistreatment of the of the
Holy Word of God and how he treats the pulpit as Something that he could just play with loose and fast for his own
Promotion of himself in his own ministry. So until the convention decides that it's going to get serious about That what
Tom Askew spoken about the fear of God in the church, there is no fear of God before these people's eyes and That's what?
One of the biggest problems that we have within the convention is why we're reaping what we are right now.
This is just a result of years of ignoring God's Word Well, thank you
Grady and keep listening to iron trip and Zion radio and thank you for your continued financial support every month
It's always a joy and a reason for Thanksgiving and praise when
I see that you have submitted a donation through our website and your friendship is
Even valued more than that brother and look forward to seeing you God -willing in Washington DC this
September and maybe even at my pastor's lunch, and I'm hoping that you get there, too Let's see we have
Ted in Moundville, Alabama and he says What does?
Tom Buck think should be done in the wake of the Southern Baptist Convention abuse controversy
Would you consider? instituting any of guideposts recommendations
Do you think the Southern Baptist Convention's approach to handling allegations of abuse is adequate as it is and requires?
No changes Well, I haven't I mean I have to be honest. I haven't read the entire
Report of guideposts. I haven't had the time to read that as far as as far as the recommendations that they've made
I'm skeptical skeptical of the recommendations I'm not skeptical necessarily of the investigation that they did but it's concerning to me that They are a
LGBT affirming group, which means that they don't have enough biblical sense to understand
How the church should respond to sexual perversion? therefore, I'm not very trusting of recommendations that they would give us on how to deal with another form of sexual perversion which would be sex sexual abuse
But what I would say is that My concerns right now with the recommendations that have been made by the task force.
I do have concerns about creating a List where people can be put on that list to have been
Charged What they call a credible charge. I'm not fully convinced of how they are
Determining what is a credible charge, but someone can make an accusation anonymously and that person can
Be accused without there being any due process Knowing even who your accuser is
Do I believe that we need to address? issues of sex abuse in the church Absolutely when those things arise but the problem in the
Convention is not because they haven't had is not because they haven't had a hotline where people can report
The problems in the convention are not because we haven't had a task force to examine these things
The problem in the convention is not because we don't have a list Centralized list where people's names can be put on the problem is what we talked about a moment ago
And then willingness to practice church discipline and then willingness to confront sin and to put out of the church anyone who is unrepentant and to allow people in leadership
They've committed sins like sex abuse in the past Even if they are repentant to allow them access back to leadership positions that are at best and wise and probably unbiblical to do so I have been a
Senior pastor for over 25 years I've dealt sadly have had to deal with multiple cases that would would be in the category of sex abuse
Each and every one of those we reported to the police Whenever there was anything that was would fall into the criminal category because God's Word instructs us to That the government is to handle such things they bear the sword for dealing with things of that nature and we have
Dealt with each and every case openly before the church have informed the church whenever there's been an accusation
And we have been acted in a transparent manner and Have made clear when a person's gone to another church if they're under discipline
To let them know that they needed to wear this particular person because they're in repentance so We don't need something new to fix this problem.
We have the Word of God If we would simply follow the Word of God obey the Word of God and employ the
Word of God in our churches We would be just fine but the reason we're having to turn to worldly organizations and worldly ideologies to deal with things is
Because we have not been following God's Word as it is written Thank You Ted in Manville, Alabama and Our friend pastor
Tim Bush Bushong has sent in another question since his previous one was too similar to the one previous to his question
Tim asks, when are we gonna public and he said gonna I'm not using bad grammar
When are we gonna? publicly denounce Akin for shielding
Ms. Notorious aka Darth swallow prior
Well, I mean listen the bottom line is I Didn't hear the part about Denouncing for what
I knew it involved Karen swallow prior but denounce a for Akin Danny Akin for shielding
Her and I'm not I'm not I'm not in the loop about that. So I don't even know what that means.
Well goodness gracious Tim must not been following me very closely or I haven't been very clear.
Yeah, there's no doubt that dr Akin is shielding Karen swallow prior Because when
I think what he's referring to is when she was asked in a video where dr Akin was present and my wife and I were present with Karen prior and he asked her if she had
Shared my wife or given my wife Rest draft to anyone.
She responded with the word by saying I don't recall I'll just I mean,
I'll just say it very bluntly if dr Akin doesn't have enough sense to know that that is a question that is
Dodging the question if he doesn't have enough sense to know that that is a legal ease answer and not an honest straightforward
Answer that a Christian would give then he doesn't have enough sense to lead a seminary is that hopefully that's direct enough
All right, Tim. Thanks for submitting that second question and We're going to go to our final break right now because I would rather not

We are now back with Tom Buck and Tom. We have a listener in Perry County Pennsylvania named
Arnie who wants to know I've always wondered What are the benefits to actually being a member of the
Southern Baptist Convention since it's not technically a denomination? And I don't know whether or not they actually provide monetary or other help
To their congregations. It is also puzzling as to why Theologically reformed congregations would remain in that denomination
Since they are very often looked down upon as being heretics and are a tiny minority in the group
Well when you talk about benefits, I think that what you're looking at is
Baptist you know Baptist churches their autonomous have looked to have associations and partnerships primarily to Do missions and that's how that I have looked at it with the
Southern Baptist Convention So you have seminaries that are there to train and educate pastors and missionaries?
That's what you're hoping that they will be doing to prepare them to go to the mission field and to be pastors And then the
IMB is kind of the the major reason of being a part of the Southern Baptist Convention Because it provides the infrastructure if you will infrastructure to be able to send missionaries to the field to provide for The care that they need
Financial and otherwise while they're on the field if there's problem the problems to give them support to extract them if need be
You know, there are a lot of benefits if you will of that association Yeah, there's no doubt that anybody that's reformed is considered the black sheep so to speak of the family in the
SPC And it's always been something that You know has been troublesome and problematic for me in the in the
Southern Baptist Convention But there's no perfect group that I think you could associate yourself with the question is is does it come to a point in time where you can
No longer Hold your nose so to speak or overlook things that are problematic there are things
I have been willing to Overlook in our partnership for the greater good, but that's becoming harder and harder
Thank You Arnie and You brought up missionaries Are you or should
I say are all the individual churches Under the umbrella of the
Southern Baptist Convention because it's interesting. It's called a denomination, but there are still independence and autonomy
Amongst all the congregations that are a part of it. That's that's is that Unusual for some something calling itself a denomination
Well the Southern Baptist Convention which I mean the leaders in the convention that know what they're talking about would not would say it's not
Denomination that it's truly a convention that we are together in friendly partnership and that we meet
Two days a year to determine how to better partner together for the cause of of the
Great Commission And then we give money to help fund the entities that help carry out that The various aspects of the
Great Commission, so it's not truly a denomination in the sense of having oversight or any authority over the local churches we can
Choose to associate or not associate at any time without any repercussions So I do want to I did do want to comment at least before our time is up on The report of the credentials committee if I may oh, yeah, definitely that to me was one of the most disappointing things that happened at the convention when they came back and and Were asked to disfellowship
Saddleback community church because Rick Warren had ordained joyfully ordained three women as pastors and The credentials committee came back and recommended to study the meaning of the word path pastor in the
Baptist faith and message 2000 article 6 and to me that was just it was cowardice at best
I think it's problematic in one part that there is a woman who is the
Chairman of the credentials committee So she is exercising authority over the men in that committee
So it doesn't I guess it shouldn't surprise us That she comes back and is and that that committee is waffling on whether a woman should have authority in a local church
But the committee needs to look no further to understand the meaning of the word pastor than the article itself article 6 of Baptist faith and message
Because it reads about the New Testament Church. It says it's scriptural the New Testament Church's scriptural officers are pastors and deacons and then the article says the office of pastor is limited to men as qualified by scripture and The article then gives you the scripture specifically to support those words
It says 1st Timothy 2 9 to 14 Well 1st Timothy 2 12 reads, but I do not allow a woman to teach or exercise authority over a man
But to remain quiet. Well, that's immediately followed by the character qualifications of a pastor in 3 1 to 15
So the only language in article 6 that 1st Timothy 2 9 to 14 could be used to support
For the office of pastor Would it would be that exact language? So this is the scriptural qualifications that article 6 is referencing
That that answers what is the function of a pastor a pastor is someone who teaches and exercises authority in the church
Over me and and scripture prohibits women from holding that office So they then the president of the convention allowed
Rick Warren to take to the floor and give a six minute uninterrupted speech
Defending Him having women pastors by Bragging about how many churches he's planted how that he's supposedly trained 1 .1
million pastors And went on and on to talk about all the things that he personally is accomplished
It was sickening at best and none of those numbers justify
Him violating the very Word of God by appointing women as pastors, but that points back to the question.
You asked me earlier pragmatism is the root of all this and because Rick Warren has had success and has numbers
Then everybody wants to overlook that he's in complete violation of Scripture itself but all he was doing was feeding
Southern Baptists what they love to eat and That's why when he talked about all the numbers he has he received a standing ovation by many in the room
Even though his church is thumbing its nose at God's Word Wow One of the reasons
I was starting off My other question before you you gave that information
In regard to missionaries is What benefit is there of being a part of a convention
Where people in that convention are not going to want to support Calvinist missionaries because they hate
Calvinism and Vice versa You're not I'm assuming going to want to support missionaries that are going all over the world telling people that The doctrines of sovereign grace are heretical.
So how does that all work out? Well, I haven't met any and of course there's many missionaries so I haven't met them all but I haven't met any missionaries who are who are
Out there saying that the doctrines of sovereign grace and the doctrines of grace are heretical
But what we have chosen to do is the Southern Baptist Church is specifically had strategic partnerships with like -minded
IMB missionaries now We we still give our money to the cooperative program.
We understand it does not go directly To those missionaries, but we have chosen to understand that the money that we do give is supporting those particular missionaries that are like -minded with us soteriologically and so we
Go to the field and do do partnership work With them on the field where they are
We send them extra money when they have projects that they need to accomplish that the
IMB does not necessarily fund And then they come back to our church when they come to the states and give reports to our church
So I do think there has been a way that churches like ours could partner just like there are churches that don't agree with the
Doctrines of grace. They're also funding these SPC missionaries that do believe in the doctrines of grace
So there's no doubt that there's a mixed bag regarding missionaries But I think there is a way to have strategic partnerships
If the Southern Baptist Convention were healthy overall Well before I take any more listener questions,
I really want you to have several minutes of uninterrupted time Where you can basically lay out in summary form what you most want etched in the hearts and minds of our listeners
Well, you you had asked the question of whether the convention is salvageable. I don't know if that's exact word that you used or not
I still hope and believe that the majority of Southern Baptist churches the average person in the pew
Does not agree with the current trajectory of the Southern Baptist Convention when it comes to issues of women pastors
When it comes to issues of worldly ideologies creeping into the church But the problem is it doesn't matter what the average person in the pew believes if the average person in the pew is not showing up to vote
I Have less and less hope for the Southern Baptist Convention being able to be salvaged
It would take many years for there to be a change of direction in the
SPC We lost an important opportunity To begin to change that direction with Tom Askell.
He could not have changed it in one year He couldn't have changed it in two years. It would take a string of presidents
Probably over ten years to bring about the kind of change that's needed So I would encourage
Southern Baptists to make think long and hard about whether they want to continue the partnership in the
Southern Baptist Convention They cannot continue any conservative Church that desires to have the
Word of God as being sufficient. They cannot continue going like it is They have either got to get out or they've got to get to the convention and vote
There will be many Southern Baptist churches that will not That will decide that it is not worth it to continue to fight
I don't know where our church will ultimately stand in August I don't have a lot of hope of things turning around in the convention
I pray the best for my fellow Southern Baptist brothers and sisters that they can
Bring about a change in the convention, but it's not going to happen at the current with the current trajectory and the current numbers
They're showing up to the convention But I know that I don't want to spend the last 20 years of my ministry trying to rescue a sinking ship
Either this ship gets righted very quickly Or I don't see it something that we can continue to put our energy effort time and resources into But that being said
I think for every single listener that's out there They need to realize how important it is to be a part of a sound solid gospel preaching doctrinally sound
Church to be a part of every single week. They need to find the church. They need to unite with that church
They need to be active in that church Because we don't have time to waste in this world
Being a part of anemic churches We need to be a part of vibrant churches, and we also don't need to be trying to do this thing on our own
Where people think that they can sit at home and do church at home They need to be a part of a vibrant church seeking to accomplish and to carry out the
Great Commission Time is is too short for us to waste The older I get the more
I realize that I need to be investing my life into meaningful cooperations and associations of where like -minded people are seeking to To bring about the accomplishment of the
Great Commission of taking the word of the gospel of Jesus Christ to every Nation and tribe and so I hope that the listeners will see the importance of uniting with like -minded people to accomplish that task
Well, we have Ronald in Eastern Suffolk County, Long Island, New York who wants to know how specifically
The audience can pray for you and your lovely wife Well, I think one of the ways to pray for us right now we are obviously very disappointed we came back very wounded
Personally wounded from the convention My wife is an unbelievably strong godly woman.
I'm thankful for her she has both neither of us
Want to become bitter from all of this? We want to continue to press on because we believe in a sovereign
God and we write in how they handled it We believe that God is sovereign and what they meant for evil
God means for good And so we pray that God pray that God will continue to use our story of how he healed our marriage to be a means of communication to other believers that there's hope for them if they begin to submit themselves to the gospel of Jesus Christ and apply his truth to their to their life and to their marriage and so just pray that God will continue to use us in that kind of capacity and That we won't allow
The evil that others do to discourage us or cause us to become bitter but to press on in obedience to our sovereign
Lord We have CJ and Lennon Hurst Long Island, New York who said
I was very pleasantly surprised to hear that a non Calvinist like Jack Graham would support the presidential candidacy of Tom Askell in the
Southern Baptist Convention Were there many other? non -reformed
Pastors and leaders in the Southern Baptist Convention who also supported
Tom to your to your knowledge Absolutely, there were many who were supporting
Tom because they understood that we could have that we can have a debate even among godly
Christians over this particular issue of Soteriology, it's not that we don't believe that's important we do but we've understood that That we can come together and disagree on some of those soteriological issues
But these ecclesiological issues had to be addressed. And so there was Pleasantly pleased or pleasantly surprised maybe
But happy that there was able to be a coalition in this area and there was a strong coalition sadly
Some of the people that are the biggest problems in the Southern Baptist Convention are reformed people They are the ones who have been introducing a lot of this ideology of critical race theory
Wow convention Wow, horrible horrible well, Tom, I know that you are an extraordinary
Speaker having seen you and heard you speak at conferences if there is someone listening out there that says, you know
