This is hopeful expectation, waiting while we await the news that Christ is risen from the dead.

And if you stay through the whole service, I know it's a long one, I've heard somebody describe it as we gather in the dark, we read the whole

Bible and sing a lot of hymns along the way. That's not a bad way to describe what it is that we will be doing tonight.

Lord, on this most holy night in which our Lord Jesus is passed over from death to life, we are gathered here in vigil and prayer.

This is the Passover of the Lord in which by hearing his word, we celebrate and share in his victory over death.

Let us pray. Oh God, you are like a refiner's fire, and your spirit enkindles the hearts of your faithful people with the fire of your love.

Blessed we implore you, those who keep this joyful Easter festival, that burning with desire for life with you, we may be found rightly prepared to share in the feast of light which has no end.

We're going to read a lot of Genesis tonight. And let me get there. In fact,

So then the Lord said to Noah, go into the ark, you and all of your household, for I have seen that you are righteous before me in this generation.

Take with you seven pairs of all clean animals, the male and its mate, a pair of the animals that are not clean, the male and his mate, and seven pairs of the birds of the heavens also, male and female, to keep their offspring alive on the face of all of the earth.

For in seven days I will send rain on the earth for 40 days and 40 nights. And every living thing that I have made,

I will blot out from the face of the ground. And Noah did all that the Lord had commanded.

We continue in verse 11. In the 600th year of Noah's life, in the second month, on the 17th day of the month, on that day, all the fountains of the great deep burst forth, and the windows of the heavens were opened.

And rain fell upon the earth 40 days and 40 nights. On the very same day,

Noah and his sons Shem and Ham and Japheth and Noah's wife and the three wives of his sons with them entered the ark.

They and every beast according to its kind, and all the livestock according to their kinds, and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth according to its kind, and every bird according to its kind, every winged creature, they went into the ark with Noah, two and two of all flesh, in which there was the breath of life.

And those that entered, male and female of all flesh, went in as God had commanded him.

And the Lord shut him in. The flood continued 40 days on the earth.

The waters increased and bore up the ark, and it rose high above the earth.

We continue in chapter 8 verse 6. At the end of 40 days,

Noah opened the window of the ark that he had made, and he sent forth a raven.

It went to and fro until the waters were dried up from the earth. Then he sent forth a dove from him to see if the waters had subsided from the face of the ground.

But the dove found no place to set her foot, and she returned to him to the ark, for the waters were still on the face of the whole earth.

So he put out his hand and took her and brought her into the ark with him. He waited another seven days, and again he sent forth the dove out of the ark.

And the dove came back to him in the evening, and behold, in her mouth was a freshly plucked olive leaf.

So Noah knew that the waters had subsided from the earth, but he waited another seven days and sent forth a dove, and she did not return to him anymore.

In the 601st year, in the first month, on the first day of the month, the waters were dried from off of the earth, and Noah removed the covering of the ark and looked, and behold, the face of the ground was dry.

In the second month, on the 27th day of the month, the earth had dried out.

Then God said to Noah, Go out from the ark, you and your wife and your sons and your sons' wives with you.

Bring out with you every living thing that is with you of all flesh, birds and animals, and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth, that they may swarm on the earth and be fruitful and multiply on the earth.

So Noah went out and his sons and his wife and his sons' wives with him.

We continue in chapter 9 verse 8. Then God said to Noah and to his sons with him,

Behold, I establish my covenant with you and your offspring after you, and with every living creature that is with you, the birds, the livestock, and every beast of the earth with you, as many as came out of the ark.

It is for every beast of the earth. I establish my covenant with you that never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of the flood, and never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.

And God said, This is the sign of the covenant that I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you for all future generations.

I have set my bow in the clouds, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth.

When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow is seen in the clouds, I will remember my covenant that is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh, and the water shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh.

When the bow is in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.

God said to Noah, This is the sign of the covenant that I have established between me and all flesh that is on the earth.

O Lord, you kill and you raise to life. You brought the flood upon a wicked and perverse generation, and yet you save faithful Noah and his family in the ark.

Keep us in safety in the ark of Christ's body, the church, that your mercy may come to its fullness and your salvation be preached to the ends of the earth.

I shall tell you. So Abraham rose early in the morning, saddled his donkey and took two of his young men with him and his son

Isaac. And he cut the wood for the burnt offering and rose and went to the place of which

God had told him. On the third day, Abraham lifted up his eyes and he saw the place from afar.

Then Abraham said to his young men, Stay here with the donkey. I and the boy will go over there and worship and come again to you.

And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac, his son. And he took in his hand the fire and the knife.

I know that you fear God, seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son from me.
