00:14
Welcome to another installment of Fighting for the Faith. My name is Chris Roseborough. I'm your servant in Jesus Christ.
00:20
This is the channel that compares what people are saying in the name of God to the Word of God. I have to warn you at the beginning of this episode that in in the future what
00:33
I'm about to do may be considered a war crime and may actually be outlied by the
00:39
Geneva Convention, but as the Fat Electrician points out on his YouTube channel, it's not a war crime the first time you do it.
00:53
I said, what's going on here, Roseborough? Well, if you watch the the live stream that we did for the celebrating reaching 100 ,000 subscribers, the the live stream of Prophecy Bingo.
01:08
By the way, if you're sitting there, where'd it go? It's not in the videos. It's under the live tab.
01:14
If you missed it, go to the Fighting for the Faith YouTube channel, then you'll see it says videos and it says live.
01:22
Click on the live and you'll see we're gonna have more lives that we do in the future. But all that being said, if you remember from that particular live stream of Prophecy Bingo, we came up with a new phrase that we're going to add to our
01:35
Prophecy Bingo card. The phrase is prophetic naggery. What you're about to experience, and believe me,
01:43
I am NOT doing this to torture you, is going to be, I'm going to refer to it as sermonic naggery.
01:51
That's the only way I can describe it. It's going to be really hard to listen to.
01:57
All I can say is don't tap out. Just gut it out if you need to. There's gonna be some biblical teaching along the way that will save the sermonic naggery that you're going to be experiencing.
02:11
So all that being said, let's whirl up the desktop. And here's the web browser.
02:18
We're heading over to Awaken Church yet again. And we're going to be listening to a woman by the name of Jillian Burchell, who she calls herself a pastor, but scripture doesn't allow for women to be pastors.
02:30
But a Yergin Methesius there at Awaken Church isn't really known for obeying scripture.
02:37
So the name of this sermonic naggery is titled
02:44
Comfortable or Called. And gird up your loins, beloved
02:51
Fighting for the Faith Watcher. You're not ready for this.
02:57
Neither am I. I'm hesitant to hit the play button, but like I said, let's not tap out.
03:02
Let's go through it. And it's not a war crime until I do this again, and Geneva has outlawed it. So I just want to make sure you understand that.
03:09
Here we go. My message today is this. It's called Comfortable or Called. Comfortable or Called.
03:16
And the one thing I do know, and I know a lot of things, but the one thing I do know is that you can't be both. I love to be comfortable.
03:24
I love to get my slippers on. I love to get my comfy clothes on, you know, outfit off, comfies on. I don't like it if other people in the house haven't got their comfies on.
03:30
It makes me uncomfortable. It's like, change your clothes, get your comfies on. I like to be comfortable. I like to have enough money to go out for a cup of coffee.
03:36
I like to be comfortable. I like to be comfortable in my home, in our church. We love comfort. But you cannot be comfortable and called because the calling of God on your life is not comfortable.
03:48
Do you remember the saying, quad non es biblicum, non es biblicum? If it ain't in the
03:53
Bible, it ain't biblical. Where in the Bible does it say that God's calling on your life is not comfortable?
04:02
Where is this dichotomy that we see this woman engaging in here in the sermonic naggery about, you know, that God says,
04:11
I haven't called you to be comfortable. Now, there's some truth to that, but not in the way she's nagging you about.
04:19
Let's continue, shall we? And today, we are going to do some shifting because too many of you have got to a stage where you are happy to be comfortable.
04:26
God did not call you to pay off your mortgage and be comfortable. Uh, what?
04:35
Do you have a biblical text for that? Oh, pastor, that's not what I've been taught at this church. I've been taught that it's good to pay off your mortgage.
04:42
Well, of course it is. But it's not a place where you get to when you are comfortable. It's a place where you go, right, God, with all this money
04:48
I now have because I don't have a mortgage payment. What is the next phase of my life? What is the next level of my life? Because God doesn't want you to be comfortable.
04:56
Again, biblical text, please. That would be super helpful. He wants you to live in calling. There is too many.
05:02
I'm sorry. Which biblical text says he wants me to live in calling? I've been married 40 years. I've been pastor for 35.
05:08
So I can say a few things that are... So you've been in rebellion for 35 years. It shows.
05:14
You used to be able to say. But I do believe that the generations that are coming up and even our generation have got lazy.
05:20
It's like we sit on the sofa and we go, oh, I'll call Uber Eats and I'll get a 99 cents burger.
05:28
What biblical text is she preaching from again? I can't think of a text that supports this naggery that we're experiencing.
05:39
I'll pay $3 .50 to get it delivered because I'm too idle to get off the sofa and get some dinner cooked.
05:44
No, stop being lazy. Get off your backside and go and cook some real food. Is it a sin to call
05:51
Uber Eats? Not that I've ever done it, but is that sinful? Because how many of you know that is not going to satisfy you.
05:58
It's a waste of money. Oh, I'm pretty sure that back in my day, we just had takeout, you know, or you have it delivered.
06:06
You know, we didn't use Uber Eats, but, you know, sometimes we would order pizza and we would get this.
06:13
We would have it delivered. Oh, I need to repent.
06:19
And it's not satisfying. No, believe me, it was very satisfying, especially for my wife, that there were no, she didn't have to cook.
06:27
And some nights when we would order pizza and have it brought and delivered, we would eat using paper plates so there weren't even any dishes.
06:36
It was really satisfying. Are you saying, lady, that it was wrong of me to do this because God has a calling on my life and being comfortable is contrary to that?
06:47
What are you even saying? And it's like, come on. Why have we got so lazy?
06:54
Oh, it's all about comfort. No, no. God wants to change your mind this morning. He doesn't want you to be comfortable. It's about calling.
07:00
Let me explain. There was Esther in the Bible, beautiful Queen Esther. Oh my word, how lovely to live in a palace.
07:06
How lovely to be like one of the chosen. Now watch what she does here. Okay. I'm not going to be reading the story of Esther, but just trust me,
07:16
Esther isn't going to be the only biblical person from the Old Testament that she's going to abuse.
07:23
And so this is going to be an abuse of the story of Esther. Watch what she's doing here.
07:30
She started off with her premise. Okay. This is her teaching. This is her theology.
07:37
God has called you to a calling and not to be comfortable and the two don't go together. If you're comfortable in somehow you're missing your calling and you got to stop being lazy.
07:48
Right? Okay. So this is going to fit into the story of Esther, right?
07:53
She's just going to read this in. This is called eisegesis and it's a twisting of God's word. How lovely to be that beautiful inside and out.
08:00
She had Gucci. She had Louis. She had Saint Laurent. She could take a bath in Chanel number five. She could have
08:05
Jo Malone. She could have manicures, pedicures, facials. Oh Jesus. She could have massages when she wanted.
08:12
She could have little puppy dogs with pink bows running around her feet. Her use of the word Jesus there wasn't in reference to our
08:18
Savior. It was almost like a curse word. And she could have stayed comfortable. God doesn't want you to stay comfortable.
08:33
He's got a calling on your life. So I'm going to challenge you right now. Whatever position you're in in your life, say, God, why am
08:38
I here? What is the calling in this position? And Esther's calling was to save an entire Jewish nation.
08:44
She could have rejected the call of God on her life and said, I'm staying comfortable. No, no, no. That wasn't what God had for her life. It's not even part of the story.
08:51
We would not be talking about Esther all these years later if that's what she done. And then there was Gideon. Gideon was comfortable in his smallness.
08:58
No, he wasn't. You just made that up, lady. You on your naggery rant that you're on right now just completely made that up.
09:07
Nowhere in the story of Gideon in Judges chapter six, seven, eight, does it say anything about him being comfortable in his smallness?
09:17
We're going to debunk this here in a minute. I'm getting a little annoyed by her sermonic naggery, but we continue.
09:23
See, some people are like, well, I'm insignificant. I'm not in a royal position like Esther. I'm just small like Gideon.
09:28
And you stay in your smallness. And Gideon was like threshing wheat in a wine press. And God turns up and goes, mighty warrior.
09:36
Oh, no, no. You're omitting some stuff. Oh, God, you got that wrong. If you read the story, he's quite rude to God. He's disrespectful.
09:42
No, he isn't. I'll prove that to you in a minute. He's like, no,
09:48
God, you got that wrong. That's not me. I'm the lowest of the low. And my family are the lowest of the lowest of the low. And I'm actually quite
09:53
And this is what happens when you don't read a biblical text and you don't exegete it.
09:59
And you don't have people read along with you while you're reading the text. Comfortable in my smallness.
10:04
And God says, Gideon, I didn't call you to be small or hide in a wine press and be fearful. You have a calling on your life.
10:10
You are a mighty warrior. So maybe you're comfortable in your little life today. God did not call you to stay in your little life.
10:18
Now, no, she didn't actually preach the story of Gideon. So we're not going to do the whole story, but let's take a look at a little bit of it, shall we?
10:26
OK, story of Gideon begins in Judges chapter six, which gives us the context that we find
10:33
Gideon in when we find Gideon in the story. Judges chapter six, verse one. The people of Israel did what was evil in the sight of Yahweh, and Yahweh gave them into the hand of Midian for seven years.
10:45
What was the evilness that they engaged in? Idolatry, breaking of that first commandment, you shall have no other gods.
10:53
You'll see that in a minute. So the hand of Midian overpowered Israel because God was punishing them for their idolatry.
11:00
And because of Midian, the people of Israel made for themselves dens that are in the mountains and caves and strongholds.
11:08
For whenever the Israelites planted crops, the Midianites and the Amalekites and the people of the
11:14
East would come against them. They would encamp against them and devour the produce of the land as far as Gaza and leave no sustenance in Israel and no sheep or ox or donkey.
11:28
Hmm. Does this sound like the the major premise of the Pixar movie A Bug's Life?
11:35
It is. Yeah. Flick is Gideon, just saying that that's what that story is based on.
11:42
So they would encamp against them, devour the produce of the land as far as Gaza, and leave no sustenance in Israel, no sheep or oxen or donkey.
11:51
They would come up with their livestock and their tents. They would come like locusts in number.
11:57
Both they and their camels could not be counted, so that they laid waste the land as they came in.
12:03
And Israel was brought very low because of Midian, and the people of Israel cried out for help to Yahweh.
12:12
Help! Yahweh, you're the one who brought us out of Egypt! Yeah, but you've abandoned
12:18
Yahweh for the worship of Baal, right? So when the people of Israel cried out to Yahweh on account of the
12:26
Midianites, Yahweh sent a prophet to the people of Israel, and he said to them, Thus says Yahweh, the
12:31
God of Israel, I led you up from Egypt and brought you out of the house of slavery, and I delivered you from the hand of the
12:38
Egyptians and from the hand of all who oppressed you, and drove them out before you, and gave you their land.
12:43
And I said to you, I am Yahweh your God. You shall not fear the gods of the
12:49
Amorites in whose land you dwell, but you have not obeyed my voice.
12:56
Now, the angel of Yahweh. Now, when we see this in the Old Testament, the angel of Yahweh is an appearance of Christ, of Jesus, prior to the
13:08
Incarnation. So this is a theophany, this is an appearance of God. So the
13:14
Malach Yahweh is, in fact,
13:20
Christ. And you'll see that in this text, it's very important. So now the angel of Yahweh came and sat under the terebinth at Ophrah, which belonged to Joash, the
13:30
Aborizerite, while his son Gideon was beating out the wheat in the wine press to hide from the
13:37
Midianites. Now, by the way, does this sound like Gideon was comfortable in his smallness?
13:47
No, okay? He, along with the rest of Israel, were sorely oppressed by the
13:52
Midianites, which was God's punishment for their idolatry. And so the angel of Yahweh appeared to him, to Gideon, and said to him, note what he says,
14:02
Yahweh is with you, that's the part she left out,
14:09
Yahweh is with you, O mighty man of valor. And Gideon said to him, please, my
14:15
Lord, if Yahweh is with us, why then has all of this happened to us?
14:22
Huh, you're gonna note, the thing that Gideon took issue with at first was the fact that the angel of Yahweh, this is a pre -incarnate appearance of Jesus, that he took issue with the fact that Jesus said,
14:38
Yahweh is with you. Well, really? He is? Well, where is he? Because, you know, why then has all of this happened to us?
14:46
And where are all his wonderful deeds that our fathers recounted to us, saying, did not
14:52
Yahweh bring us up from Egypt? And now Yahweh has forsaken us and given us into the hand of Midian.
14:59
Hmm, he doesn't sound very comfortable to me, does he? No, not at all. So Yahweh turned to him and said, note what it says here, and Yahweh turned to him and said, wait,
15:13
I thought the text said that the angel of Yahweh was the one who appeared to him. Right, Jesus is
15:22
Yahweh, by the way, that being the case here. So Yahweh turned to him and said, we know who's talking, who is
15:30
Gideon conversing with, the God of the universe, right? You go in this might of yours and save Israel from the hand of Midian.
15:40
Do not I send you? And he said to him, please, Lord, how can
15:46
I save Israel? Behold, my clan is the weakest in Manasseh. I am the least in my father's house.
15:53
He's not comfortable in his smallness, he's just stating facts.
15:59
You'll note that God chose the lowliest of the low, from the lowest and weakest clan in Israel, to be the fellow that he's going to make the
16:10
Savior of Israel. Are you starting to get it now?
16:17
Gideon's a Savior, which means he's a type and shadow of Christ. Gideon's lowliness foreshadows
16:25
Jesus's lowliness. Was Jesus born in a palace? No, he was born in a manger.
16:36
Huh. Did Jesus grow up in Jerusalem, in David's palace?
16:42
No, he grew up in Nazareth. Can anything good come from Nazareth? So you get the idea here.
16:48
What's going on is that God has chosen a Savior for Israel to save them from the hand of Midian, kind of a stand -in for Satan and the world and things like this, and he's chosen the lowliest of the low to do so, foreshadowing an aspect of Christ and his earthly ministry and him coming to save us.
17:10
And so Yahweh said to him, but I will be with you and I shall strike the Midianites as one man.
17:17
I shall strike, well sorry, and you shall strike the Midianites as one man. And he said to him, if now
17:23
I have found favor in your eyes, then show me a sign that it is you who speak with me.
17:29
Please do not depart from here until I come to you and bring out my present and set it before you.
17:34
And he said, I will stay until you return. So Gideon went into his house and prepared a young goat and unleavened cakes from an ephah of flour.
17:44
The meat he put in a basket and the broth he put in a pot and brought them to him under the terebinth and presented them.
17:51
And the angel of God said to him, take the meat and the unleavened cakes and put them on this rock and pour the broth over them.
17:59
And he did so. And the angel of Yahweh reached out the tip of the staff that was in his hand and touched the meat and the unleavened cakes.
18:08
And fire sprang up from the rock and consumed the meat and the unleavened cakes.
18:13
And the angel of Yahweh vanished from his sight. And then Gideon perceived that he was the angel of Yahweh.
18:20
And Gideon said, alas, O Lord God, O Lord Yahweh, for now
18:26
I have seen the angel of Yahweh face to face. But Yahweh said to him, peace be to you, do not fear, you shall not die.
18:35
And you shall not die. Then Gideon built an altar there to Yahweh and called it Yahweh is
18:41
Peace. Now that'll preach, because here's the thing,
18:48
Yahweh is peace. And through the shed blood of Christ on the cross, he has made peace for us with him, reconciled us to God by the death of Jesus Christ, the lowliest of the low, right?
19:02
Yahweh is peace. To this day it still stands at Ophrah, which belongs to the Aborizerites. So that night
19:07
Yahweh said to him, you take your father's bull and the second bull, seven years old, and pull down the altar of Baal that your father has, and cut down the
19:16
Asherah that is beside it, and build an altar to Yahweh your God on the top of the stronghold here, with stones laid in due order.
19:25
Then take the second bull and offer it as a burnt offering with the wood of the Asherah that you shall cut down.
19:32
So Gideon took ten men of his servants and did as Yahweh had told him. But because he was too afraid of his family and the men of the town to do it by day, he did it by night.
19:42
And when the men of the town rose early in the morning, behold, the altar of Baal was broken down, and Asherah beside it was cut down, and the second bull was offered on the altar that had been built.
19:54
And they said to one another, who has done this thing? And after they searched and inquired, they said,
20:01
Gideon the son of Joash has done this thing. Then the men of the town said to Joash, you bring out your son that he may die, for he has broken down the altar of Baal and cut down the
20:11
Asherah beside it. This is a religious hate crime, right? But Joash said to all who stood against him, will you contend for Baal, or will you save him?
20:20
Whoever contends for him shall be put to death by morning. If he is a god, then let him contend for himself, because his altar has been broken down.
20:28
Therefore, on that day Gideon was called Jeroboal. Jeroboal, that is to say, let
20:35
Baal contend against him, because he broke down his altar. Now there's more to the story of Gideon, but what details we are getting in this sermonic naggery totally don't fit the story at all, if you'd actually just read it from the
20:52
Bible, lady. But she doesn't seem to be all too concerned about making sure that what she's saying is biblical and true.
21:00
She believes that whatever God laid on her heart, that's what she's to be preaching, but all this stuff is just utter nonsense.
21:07
Now here's the thing, what's really wrong with this? And well, aside from the fact that she's preaching when she shouldn't be, and she claims to be a pastor when she isn't, because God doesn't allow for women to be pastors, there's more to it than that, and that is this.
21:23
She is nagging people with man -made, and she's the person who made them in this particular case, woman -made commandments.
21:32
God hasn't called you to be comfortable. He's given you a calling and you can't be comfortable.
21:39
Okay, in Scripture, when people have done wrong, there's commandments that you can link back to it, and the
21:47
Scripture does give strong rebukes to people who have sinned and transgressed
21:54
God's law, and God calls us through the Scripture to repent of our sin, my sin, your sin, all of our sin.
22:02
That being the case, we have great examples from the Scriptures of people who have not nagged, but rightly condemned people and showed that they were guilty of breaking
22:16
God's command and called them to repentance. Let me give an example, James, the Epistle of James.
22:43
Oh, look at that, James is a Sola Scriptura guy. God's law, by the way, walking according to God's commands, that's freedom, that's liberty.
23:14
You know what slavery is? Sin. Sin is slavery. You're not free when you're sinning.
23:21
You're in bondage, right? He who looks at himself, okay, intently goes away and forgets what he was like, but the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets, but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.
23:38
If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue, but deceives his heart, this person's religion is worthless.
23:47
Religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this, visit the orphans and the widows in their affliction and to keep oneself unstained by the world.
24:00
This is something very different than what this lady is doing. This epistle is calling us to repent of our sin, to repent of our selfishness and our self -centeredness, and to return to the law of liberty and to abandon wickedness altogether.
24:20
This woman is not calling anyone to do that. My brothers, show no partiality,
24:26
James says, as you hold the faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory. For if a man wearing a gold ring and fine clothing comes into your assembly, and a poor man in shabby clothing also comes in, and if you pay attention to the one who wears the fine clothing and you say, you sit here in a good place while you say to the poor man, you stand over there, or sit down here at my feet, have you not then made distinctions among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts?
24:55
Listen, my beloved brothers, has not God chosen those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom, which he has promised to those who love him?
25:08
But you have dishonored the poor man. Are not the rich the ones who oppress you and the ones who drag you into the court?
25:16
Are they not the ones who blaspheme the honorable name by which you were called? If you really fulfill the royal law according to the scripture, you shall love your neighbor as yourself, you are doing well.
25:28
But if you show partiality, you are committing sin and you are convicted by the law as transgressors.
25:35
And there it is. Everything that James is arguing from goes back to actual commandments found in the
25:42
Ten Commandments. And he's pointing out that when you as a Christian are engaging in these things, you are breaking
25:48
God's law and you are transgressing God's holy commands. And as such, you are transgressors.
25:54
Whoever keeps the law but fails in one point has become guilty of all of it.
26:01
For he who said, do not commit adultery, also said, do not murder. And if you do not commit adultery but you do murder, you've become a transgressor of the law.
26:10
So speak and so act as those who are to be judged under the law of liberty. For judgment is without mercy to the one who has shown no mercy.
26:19
Mercy triumphs over judgment. You see the difference? Really a big difference.
26:25
And then I would note, I'm gonna throw something else in here, because I can.
26:32
Proverbs 21. Okay, if you want actual, a book of the
26:38
Bible that teaches us the wisdom of God and how to apply practically the commands of God, Proverbs is your book.
26:47
But listen to what this chapter says. We'll kind of take this out just a little bit at a time.
26:53
So the king's heart is like channels of water in the hand of Yahweh. He turns it wherever he wishes.
27:00
So pay attention to that, okay? That's good advice if you ever find yourself in the presence of a monarch or a president or a head of state.
27:10
Every man's way is right in his own eyes, but Yahweh weighs the hearts. To do righteousness and justice is desired by Yahweh more than sacrifice.
27:22
Haughty eyes and a proud heart. The lamp of the wicked is sin. The plans of the diligent, they lead surely to advantage, but everyone who is hasty comes surely to poverty.
27:35
The acquisition of treasures by a lying tongue is a fleeting vapor. The pursuit of death.
27:42
The violence of the wicked will drag them away because they refuse to act with justice. The way of the guilty man is crooked, but as for the pure, his conduct is upright.
27:55
It is better to live in the corner of a roof than in a house shared with a contentious woman.
28:03
Oh, and there's another one here. Verse 19. It is better to live in a desert land than with a contentious and vexing woman.
28:11
You know, and then here's something more, okay?
28:20
Peter, this is not nagging on his part. This is not naggery. This is legitimate admonishment and call to holiness and a call to suffering.
28:31
And watch what Peter says. Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles, which is what all
28:38
Christians are, you are sojourning through this life. So am I.
28:44
I'm not gonna be here forever. In fact, I'm gonna probably be here a lot less time than many of you because I'm getting old, right?
28:51
You can tell in the beard and the stuff turning gray, right? But here's the thing.
28:57
You're just this far behind me. Those of you who are behind me. Some of you are ahead of me.
29:03
So we are to live as sojourners, as exiles. We are then to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which they wage war against your soul.
29:13
Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify
29:22
God in the day of visitation. And then watch what comes next. Be subject for the
29:28
Lord's sake to every human institution, whether it be to the Emperor Supreme or to governors as sent by Him, by God, to punish those who do evil and to praise those who do good.
29:39
For this is the will of God, that by doing good you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish people.
29:45
Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover -up for evil, but living as servants of God.
29:53
Honor everyone. Love the Brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the Emperor.
29:59
Servants, servants, be subject to your masters with all respect, not only to the good and to the gentle, but also to the unjust.
30:12
For this is a gracious thing when, mindful of God, one endures sorrows while suffering unjustly.
30:21
Here's the uncomfort that we're called to in Christ. What credit is it if when you sin and you are beaten for it and you endure?
30:28
But if when you do good and you suffer for it and you endure, this is a gracious thing in the sight of God.
30:34
And watch what it says. For to this you have been called. What have we been called to?
30:40
To suffer unjustly. Watch this. There's a reason.
30:46
For to this you have been called because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example so that you might follow in his steps.
30:54
He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. When he was reviled, he did not revile in return, and when he suffered, he did not threaten, but he continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly.
31:08
He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness, and by his wounds you have been healed.
31:17
For you were straying like sheep, but have now returned to the shepherd and the overseer of your souls.
31:24
So you're gonna note here, servants are not called to greatness. They're called to share and participate in the sufferings of Christ.
31:34
And the text says that this is what we're called to. You want to know what your calling is?
31:39
Your calling is to suffer. And yes, that is uncomfortable, but that is not what this lady is talking about.
31:46
But remember this, Christ suffered for you, and he, even though you were a straying sheep, he bled and died for your sins on the cross to heal you, to reconcile to God, to forgive you and pardon you for all of your transgressions, and return you to the shepherd and the overseer of your souls, right?
32:09
So you're gonna note here that even when Peter gives admonishment, he cannot do so without bringing it back to Christ in the cross.
32:19
My question regarding this sermonic naggery is, where's Jesus in all of this?
32:26
You reference Gideon, you leave out portions of the story of Gideon, and those portions that you leave out are the clear parts that point us to the fact that Gideon is a type in shadow that points us to Jesus and how he conquered our
32:40
Midianites, sin, death, and the devil, for us to set us free from the oppression that we're under.
32:48
Gideon is a type in shadow of Christ. But Jillian here, she's got better things to do than actually preach a biblical text.
32:57
She's got a message that God has laid on her heart, don't you know? Oh, bless your heart.
33:03
And so she's here to make you uncomfortable so that you can embrace your calling and things and stuff, and be great and things, which the
33:14
Bible doesn't call you to that. It's got a calling on your life. And then there was Daniel. Daniel had got into a royal position a little bit like Esther.
33:21
He got promoted because he was amazing. And Christians, you should be getting promoted. You should be standing out at work.
33:29
How do you... yeah, we do need to stand out at work, but you'll note that the way
33:34
Peter says for us to stand out at work is that when we suffer unjustly at the hands of a master who mistreats us, a boss who mistreats us, we're to endure it and know that that is a gracious thing in the sight of God.
33:49
Just read that from 2nd Peter, by the way. Because you're on time, you're faithful, you work hard, you smile, you're happy on a
33:57
Monday morning. You should stand... Where in Scripture does it say I'm going to get promoted at work? Stand out a mile off if you love
34:03
God. And so Daniel gets promoted and then all of a sudden, because there's always going to be jibber -jabber people who try and get you in trouble.
34:10
And so all these people are like jibber -jabbering because Darius had said you'd all got to pray to only him.
34:15
Well, there's Daniel. And Daniel's praying to his God. And Daniel had a choice. Do I stay comfortable in my position?
34:24
It doesn't say anything about him having a choice between staying comfortable or becoming uncomfortable.
34:29
Or do I get uncomfortable and step into my calling? No, that was another case where the choice was obeying
34:38
God's command or engaging in idolatry. And he chose to continue to obey God rather than the commands of men.
34:45
You'll know the story of Daniel and the lion's den. Even if you've never been to church in your life, you've heard the story of Daniel and the lion's den. Daniel decided, no, no,
34:52
I ain't staying comfortable. Nothing about that in the narrative there. I'm going to go and continue praying to my
34:57
God. I'm going to open the window so everybody can hear me praying to the only one God. And he got thrown in the lion's den because of his calling.
35:04
But how many of you... Okay, let's take a look at the story of Daniel and the lion's den.
35:10
Because you know what's missing there at Awaken Church? Jesus. And the story of Daniel and the lion's den is about Jesus.
35:19
It's not about Daniel. I'll prove it. Daniel chapter 6. Check that out.
36:03
A believer in the middle of a pagan situation was still faithful. And was a great employee in the middle of a pagan context.
36:14
So then these men said, well, we shall not find any ground for complaint against this
36:19
Daniel unless we find it in connection with the law of his God. So then these high officials and the satraps came by agreement to the king and said to him,
36:27
O king Darius, may you live forever. And all the high officials of the kingdom and the prefects and the satraps and the counselors and the governors are agreed that the king should establish an ordinance and enforce an injunction that whoever makes petition to any
36:41
God or man for 30 days except for two you, O king, shall be cast into the den of lions.
36:49
Well, Darius is no deity. He can't answer prayer. And this would be idolatry. But that's one of the big pieces of idolatry of the ancient world is the ancient pagans believed that their kings were gods on the earth, right?
37:03
So now, O king, establish the injunction, sign the document so that it cannot be changed according to the law of the
37:10
Medes and the Persians, which cannot be revoked. Therefore, King Darius signed the document and the injunction.
37:17
You think Daniel's going to pray to Darius? Of course not. The commandment says you shall have no other gods, right?
37:25
So when Daniel knew that the document had been signed, he went into his house where he had windows in his upper chamber, opened them toward Jerusalem, toward the temple.
37:36
He got down on his knees three times a day and prayed and gave thanks before his God as he had done previously.
37:43
Then these men came by agreement and they found Daniel making petition and plea before his
37:48
God. And then they came near and said before the king concerning the injunction, O king, did you not sign an injunction that anyone who makes petition to any god or man within 30 days except for to you,
38:03
O king, shall be cast into the den of lions? And the king answered and said, well, the thing stands fast according to the law of the
38:10
Medes and the Persians, which cannot be revoked. And then they answered and they said before the king, well,
38:17
Daniel, who is one of the exiles from Judah pays no attention to you, O king. Or the injunction that you have signed but makes his petition three times a day.
38:28
So then the king, when he heard these words, was much distressed and set his mind to deliver
38:34
Daniel. Too late. He can smell the roast. The plot, the trap has already been sprung.
38:40
It's too late. There's nothing he can do. And he labored till the sun went down to rescue him. And then these men came by agreement to the king and said to the king,
38:47
O king, that it is a law of the Medes and the Persians that no injunction or ordinance that the king establishes can be changed.
38:56
So then the king commanded and Daniel was brought and cast into the den of lions. At this point, the text should read, thus perished
39:05
Daniel. But watch what happens next. The details are very interesting. Cast into the den of lions, the king declared to Daniel, may your
39:14
God whom you serve continually deliver you. And a stone was brought and laid on the mouth of the den, and the king sealed it with his own signet, with the signet of his
39:24
Lord's, that nothing might be changed concerning Daniel. Now, if that doesn't sound like Jesus's tomb,
39:33
I don't know what does. Right? Because when Jesus died on Good Friday for your sins and for mine, right?
39:43
And they took his body and put it into the borrowed tomb of Joseph of Arimathea.
39:49
What did they do? They rolled a stone over it. And because the Jews knew full well that Jesus claimed that he was going to rise from the dead, they posted soldiers there at his tomb and they sealed the tomb with an actual edict from the emperor, from Pontius Pilate.
40:11
Right? So you're going to note here the details of what happened to Daniel. Sounds a lot like what happened to Jesus.
40:19
Now, here's the thing. Daniel isn't going to die and rise again, but this is a story prefiguring Christ's death, burial, and resurrection.
40:27
And the injustice that Jesus went through when he was crucified, right?
40:34
Yeah, they were looking for false charges against Christ. So, again, the stone was brought and laid on the mouth of the den.
40:40
The king sealed it with his own signet and with the signet of his lords that nothing might be changed concerning Daniel.
40:46
And then the king went to his palace, spent the night fasting. No diversions were brought to him. Sleep fled from him.
40:53
And then at break of day, the king arose and went in haste to the den of lions.
40:59
When did the apostles go to the tomb of Christ? At the break of day. First light, man.
41:08
The women were there first and they came back and said, he's risen. And then they bolted. They went as fast as they could to get there, right?
41:14
So as he came near to the den where Daniel was, he cried out in a tone of anguish.
41:21
The king declared to Daniel, oh, Daniel, servant of the living God, has your
41:26
God whom you serve continually been able to deliver you from the lions? Daniel said to the king, oh, king, may you live forever.
41:36
My God sent his angel and shut the lion's mouth. And they have not harmed me because I was found blameless before him and also before you.
41:46
If that doesn't sound like Jesus, I don't know what does, right? Jesus truly was found blameless because he was, but he bore your sins and mine on the cross.
41:54
And then the king was exceedingly glad and he commanded that Daniel be taken up out of the den.
42:01
So Daniel was taken up out of the den. No kind of harm was found on him because he had trusted in his
42:07
God. And the king commanded and those men who had maliciously accused Daniel were brought and cast into the den of lions.
42:14
They and their children and their wives. And before they reached the bottom of the den, the lions overpowered them and broke all their bones and pieces.
42:22
And here's an epistle, a letter written by King Darius addressed to you.
42:29
King Darius wrote to all the peoples, the nations and the languages that dwell on the earth, including wherever you are listening to me read this from.
42:38
Peace be multiplied to you. I make a decree that in all of my royal dominion, people are to tremble and fear before the
42:46
God of Daniel. For he is the living God enduring forever. His kingdom shall never be destroyed.
42:53
His dominion shall be to the end. He delivers and he rescues. He works signs and wonders in the heavens and on the earth.
43:01
And he who has saved Daniel from the power of the lions. And so this Daniel then prospered during the reign of Darius and the reign of Cyrus, the
43:10
Persian. You think this lady's done that story justice? Not even all, not even close.
43:15
Let me back this up just a smidge. Except for none of that's in the narrative.
43:36
Isn't that weird? And you're not pointing us to Jesus because the story of Daniel and the lion's den is about Christ.
43:52
Can you say that with confidence to all the Christians who have been martyred over the millennia?
43:59
Huh. Yeah, I'm going to just challenge one more thing.
44:07
I'm going to use a text to do it. Hebrews chapter 11, the great hall of faith passage.
44:12
You know, I've recently taught on this and you'll know we're familiar with. By faith,
44:29
Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac. By faith, Moses, when he was born, was hidden for three months by his parents because they saw that the child was beautiful and they were not afraid of the king's edict.
44:41
By faith, people crossed the Red Sea as on dry land. But the Egyptians, when they attempted to do the same, they were drowned.
44:48
By faith, the walls of Jericho fell down after they had been encircled for seven days. By faith,
44:54
Rahab, the prostitute, did not perish with those who were disobedient because she had given a friendly welcome to the spies.
45:31
But note here, this is all triumphant. Watch what follows next in verse 35.
45:53
They were stoned. They were sawn in two. They were killed with the sword.
45:59
They went about in skins of sheep and goats, destitute and afflicted, mistreated, of whom the world was not worthy, wandering about in deserts and mountains and in dens and caves of the earth.
46:11
And all of these, though commended through their faith, did not receive what was promised, since God has provided something better for us, that apart from us, they should not be made perfect.
46:23
I would note, by faith, people suffered greatly and even martyred him for the name of Christ.
46:30
So what this woman is saying is complete and utter nonsense. I know you already know that. And since I'm afraid of the implications regarding the
46:38
Geneva Convention, again, the fat electrician makes it clear that the first time you do it, it's not a war crime.
46:44
So keep that in mind. So hopefully you found this helpful.
