Blake would just go into it again ba ba ba and began to sing and it was just a great time we paddled for about an hour and a half and then we came to a lunch spot and Blake and I were getting to know each other a little bit and and so Blake would come up to me

I guess he knew I was the leader and the pastor and he would tug on my lapel even though I was not wearing a suit

I'm tugging on my my lifejacket and He kept doing this Pointing downstream he was communicating to me in his

Half sign language half Blake sign language way, and I knew he wanted something But I didn't really know what he wanted and so I said to Tom.

What does this mean? he kept he keeps doing this pointing that way and and doing this and Tom said this means more and so we were going down all these rapids and going down these canoe areas and Blake was just Loving every minute of it.

I'm going to preach through the entire book of Matthew the jet tour through the book of Matthew I've convinced you that you want more and here comes the more

Well, we've had our 10 -week series on election. We have not been in the book of Matthew for about Six months or so because of special events and other things and so as I got into Matthew I felt myself pulling back a little bit saying looking at this from the big picture is necessary Before I dive right back into 5 43 through 47 in other words as I began to look at it

I thought I can't really see what Matthew's trying to say unless I know what Matthew is saying in the big picture

Understanding what his flow was and his purpose and his thoughts and I thought in my own heart as I study

Then I can look at look at all the parts and I thought if that is good for me to understand It is my desire as I preach for you to understand what

I want the congregation to know and so I studied this week the book of Matthew from chapter 1 to 28.

I Just kept thinking this is the greatest Gospel ever written. It might be the first gospel written, but it is so great because it shows

Jesus as King we don't have many monarchs these days and even with Queen Elizabeth the second in the

United States this last week There are different kind of monarchies. There are Traditional monarchies that kind of don't allow the king or queen to have a whole lot of power

There are constitutional monarchies that really control what the Queen or King does and they end up being just like Queen Elizabeth Figure heads they can't do much.

They don't have much power. They are monarchs by name only But the book of Matthew the book of Matthew shows

Jesus as the king not constitutional monarch not traditional monarch but what we call the absolute monarch

Jesus is King and And basically Matthew says behold here is your king matter of fact

He's the king of kings and the Lord of lords and with Spurgeon today. I say quote and we proclaim an enthroned

People and then we move right into the book of Matthew that shows this enthroned King the book of Matthew and Never will

Matthew let you get out of the focus of your mind that Jesus is King That is the main concern of Matthew.

Jesus is King if you want to know what the theme of Matthew is you could probably guess Jesus is

King if your kids are writing little tick marks on the important words that I say today I have one important word and that is

King and in your mind. It should already be churning that if he's King then there are certain

Responses that should be do him if I live in his kingdom Then he expects certain things and demands certain things in the book of Matthew with laser like determination

This author the Apostle Matthew shows Jesus is King. He Exercises his dominion in an unchecked fashion

If you look at Matthew 21 verse 5, it might even be the best summary verse of the entire 28 chapters

Matthew 21 5 behold your King is coming to you and that's basically what

Yahweh God Himself and even 32 times in the book of Matthew found nowhere else the kingdom of heaven is repeated 32 times the kingdom of heaven the kingdom of heaven and to have a kingdom you have to have a

King Here is the great King and everyone in Israel would know and as Matthew is writing to these

Jewish people They would be familiar with Kings wouldn't they they would have a background of Kings and and what that would mean and how the other countries the

Canaanites and the Philistines and the Edomites and and the Midianites and Moabites they all had Kings, but we want a king now too and God granted them a king and his name was

Saul many other kings had come and have gone and Here we come to the book of Matthew and it's talking of Christ's birth and his his greatness and He's going to say

I'm going to show you the real King Here's the real King that I want to show you These were all just prefigurements of the

Rome has taken over and we want our Messiah and we want the king and The writer of Matthew is saying you've missed the king and let me show you now this king in written form

Jewish King Luke goes all the way back to Adam because he's trying to show that he's fully human Matthew believes in Adam, but his point today is

I want to show you that Jesus is king of the Jews Therefore we go to Adam, but he's also called something here amazingly the son of David Seven times in this book the son of David the son of David the son of David and if we're not careful

We just hear that word and let it go Son of David have mercy on us Could this be the son of David?

It's funny yesterday Kim was getting a big bag of stuff ready for us to go to the canoe trip and Kim is you know, so good and getting the sandwiches and all the stuff in this new hefty seal bag that is

Waterproof and and everything it's got these little handles and I was out of all the people there yesterday I had the stylish little watertight bag and Mike Huber might have the right boots

But I've got the cool bag and there's a little area there to write things on and so I'm saying to Kim often as she

Lovingly helps me and helps me think of all these things. I'll say you know what? It's a guy thing whether I've got sandwiches ready or soda or sunburn ointment or some kind of you know

Spray for bugs, you know, it'll all work out We've just got to go the adventures going not how much we pack it

Samuel chapter 7 That's what I want you to think of 2nd Samuel chapter chapter 7 because this genealogy means nothing unless you think like a

And you can just imagine the Jews saying I want this King will this King please come we are surrounded with Romans hordes taking over our government and our land

And then you see in the rest of Matthew chapter 1 verses 2 to 17 the the line of the

Messiah through his legal father Joseph and Then you see in chapter 1 verse 20.

The royal line is guaranteed that there would be no sin You can't have a king who lives forever because sin kills and here is this

Jesus this Messiah Who is sin less and the Spirit of God guaranteed that look at Matthew chapter 1 verse 20, but when he had considered this

Again, all she's showing that Jesus is no phony Behold an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream saying

Mary is tainted her eggs are tainted as it were by the fall but the Spirit of God hovers over the egg and the conception and everything else and guarantees that this has nothing to do with Mary this has to do with the

Guarantee that the Spirit of God would control Conception virgin birth is one thing but virgin conception is what's needed and basically what happens here in Matthew chapter 1 is

Chapter 2 the treachery surrounding the king You don't have to read much history

With England and with France and with other countries to realize quickly that there is treachery in the royal court

I mean, this isn't the favorite part to read but it's just interesting to me that someone's going to be a king and then there are all kinds of issues of Treachery surrounding this new king to be and it's no different in the

Absalom tries to usurp the throne Solomon's choice of successor to the half of the kingdom is gone by a traitor

Manahem is assassinated in 2nd Kings chapter 15 Anytime there's a king anytime there's power there is all kinds of suspicion and treachery and issues around the king

If you take a look at Matthew chapter 2 verse 1 now after the Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king lots of Herod stuff in the news these days

Herod tomb matter of fact Herod was known as what? He was known as the king of the

Jews at this time In the days of Herod Magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem saying

Where's he who has been born a king of the Jews? For we saw his star in the east and have come to worship him.

Now. What would Herod do in response to this? When Herod the king heard this.

Oh, he's supposed to be the king of the Jews. He was troubled and all Jerusalem with him Gathering together all the chief priests and the scribes of the people inquired of them where the

So what was Herod's response verse 7 then Herod? secretly called the Magi and determined from them the exact time the star appeared and with all his his acting prowess he he

Herod saw that he had been tricked by the Magi he became very enraged

Sent and slew all the male children who were in Bethlehem and all its vicinity from two years old and Under and friends there was weeping and there was great mourning if you look at verse 18, it was even spoke of in prophecy

Here dies and then it's time to go back as the angel says The new

Kings born there's all kinds of drama and intrigue chapter 3 the forerunner to the king we fast -forward 30 years and now we have the

Forerunner to the king. I studied this week and there would be all kinds of political workings about how

Forerunners to the king would have all kinds of propaganda involved and they would try to influence the

Senate of Rome. They would try to Scam those people who were in the kingdom matter of fact,

I found something called the Hittite Apology of the Hattu Silas When I mark that down burn that in your brain to Hattu Silas and they tried to legitimize a usurper to the throne

So you send out these people to tell everyone else? Yeah that a guy there's not the king. Here's the real king

Here's the forerunner going to blaze the trail so the real king can come and out of all people

Who does God pick for the forerunner of his son the son of David the ultimate son of David?

Who does he pick and you know the answer the most holy man ever born. It is amazing who he picks

He picks John the ambassador Baptist Chapter 3 verse 1 now in those days

John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea saying repent for the what is at hand Kingdom and you have a kingdom you've got to have a king

And he says my Isaiah the prophet talks about John the Baptist the voice of one crying in the wilderness and here's what he did as the king is coming and you need to Cut down all the the trees and make a nice road for the king

So to figuratively John the Baptist does that to make ready the way of the Lord make his paths straight

And then Jesus is baptized by this unique trailblazer locust and honey and his wardrobe

Yet this trailblazer was filled and his mother was filled with excuse me he was filled with the spirit while he was yet in his mother's womb great in the sight of God and Here this king has a proper forerunner and a herald and that's

John the Baptist chapter 4 Chapter 4 the challenge to the king and fourthly the challenge to the king

I think the rivals are just gonna sit around and go. Yeah. He's a king. Yeah, whatever come see come saw K We don't care

There are rivals who stand to lose there are rivals who stand maybe to benefit by the loss

And you can study the English monarchy in the 1100s and you can know for sure What happens when a monarch dies?

How they go around trying to attack each other and here comes the challenge to the king, but it's by no man

It's by no group of people. It's not by some kind of group of leaders some kind of Oligarchy or some kind of a few it is by Satan himself

Come on, no problem The king of the world as it were Satan is going to challenge the king of the

Jews and the universe Matthew 4 this is amazing. This is absolutely amazing.

Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit That's the Holy Spirit by the way into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.

Yes, you heard it, right the same spirit that descended in the form of the dove on Jesus in Matthew 3 and Had the father say this is my beloved son in whom

I'm what well, please that same Spirit that confirmed Jesus's ministry that inaugurated him into public ministry now impels

Jesus and drives him out into the wilderness and he uses Satan to prove Jesus as king

People run around all the time Oh Satan this and Satan that bind him and hedge him and give him you know All these kind of things and put him in a box and and we've got to walk around the church

And you know, we're looking to buy new property. So let's just do the prayer walk and they get Satan out of there Satan's real

Satan's true But I never ever worry about Satan Because I know he is

God's servant and God is not gonna let Satan do anything Beyond what

God has decreed wise and good and profitable true I don't need to run around wondering what

If ever Satan was really attacking me I would never if I even had the ability to say

Satan I bind you with the triple knot. You can't touch me with a half hook knot or something like that I never would if I had the ability to bind

Satan and he was attacking me and I knew he was attacking me I never ever ever would do it.

Why? Because sometimes God uses Satan To do his work in the life of an individual.

I Don't think he can indwell Christians, but can you think of the Old Testament? Let's just imagine

Job Job didn't know Satan. He didn't know anything. But let's say he knows a Satan Job one We know what

Satan here's Satan after Job and Job goes, you know what by the way, I bind you I redo rebuke you and I send you to Fitchburg.

He would be undoing what God is doing in his life We have ways to battle the enemy.

He is real and he is true But those ways are found in Ephesians 6 for instance, and you won't find binding and casting and you know, all those other things matter of fact, it is a

Manifestation of false teachers to bind and cast out Satan. That's what second Peter and Jude says But that's another story

Here God tests Jesus through Satan Let's see if he can withstand the test because the true son of David Obviously would stand up to the test and here

God the Son is going to allow God The Father is going to allow the Son to display with clearness that he is holy and will always be holy

And what does he do? He sends him The language is almost like pushing

Shoving out the door into the wilderness and if you're thinking like a Jew in the imagery of the Old Testament this horrible a

Place of desolation and loneliness. It is bad. It is frightening. This is not one of those things where you just go

Well, you know, I'm gonna just hike through the wilderness a little bit and if you were a

Jew you'd be thinking wilderness Demons you see the association doom gloom danger ahead danger lurks ahead

One man said Jesus is getting pushed into anti Eden verse 2 and after he had fasted 40 days and 40 nights

He then became hungry and the tempter came and said to him You picture the scene

Jesus is hungry tired all the isolation and danger and here comes

Satan with a little pitchfork going You might got to remember friends. That's just a that's a big caricature

The angel of light he could have appeared as because he does come as an angel of light radiant beautiful splendor and He says in verse 3 if you're the

Son of God command that these stones become bread In other words, you are God's Son and you're hungry.

You're the son of the king and you are hungry and The Satan's probably thinking you know what

Well Jesus succumb as well But it's not the plan of the father. There's nothing wrong to eat.

But in this particular situation, there's major trouble with that Satan says you've got the power and the means and of the authority to eat anytime you want

Provide for your own needs apart from your father is basically what he's saying The father's plan included all that and Satan's like just bypass do the end around behind the back
