John pt. 33 | John 6:26-40

00:03
If you will at this time, please open your Bibles to the gospel of John the gospel of John we're going to consider verses 26 to 40 gospel of John Chapter 26.
00:22
I mean chapter 6 verse 20 60 40. Excuse me. Oh God Father son and Holy Spirit the
00:39
God of Abraham Isaac and Jacob and those who have the faith of Abraham Lord we
00:52
Confess our sinfulness and our need for you Whether it is in our daily lives
01:02
But especially right now As I stand before your people
01:08
Have a great reminder of my sinfulness a great reminder of my inabilities
01:18
And Lord I just I just ask in Christ's name
01:25
That you will be faithful to your people And that you will help us to understand this text
01:36
Lord without you we are nothing And without your Holy Spirit, there is no way
01:43
Anyone will be able to understand these magnificent words that we have
01:50
In this beautiful and wonderful Gospel So again, this is our 32nd message in this gospel
02:08
I'm not really sure how long it's going to take to get through the whole thing I'm definitely not trying to fly through it
02:18
The reason why I put verses 26 through 40 in it I feel like if I just continue to break down verse by verse a lot of this is
02:26
Stuff that we've already spoken about and so when I say certain words, it should call to remembrance
02:34
But also this is just part one of a two -part concerning this theme
02:41
Our theme for this Lord's Day is well The theme is actually the overarching thing for the whole chapter, excuse me
02:49
But the proposition I think for this Lord's Day is the reality of false Disciples, and this is part three of that But this is part one.
02:58
I know that's confusing. This is what happens in your reform Baptist Church part one Of those the proposition is those who believe in Jesus will never perish
03:10
But that's the the great hope that we have those who believe in Jesus will never perish let me read
03:17
This section real quick the gospel of John chapter 6 beginning in verse 26
03:27
Jesus answered and said to them truly truly I say to you you seek me not because you saw signs
03:36
But because you ate of the loaves and were filled Do not work for the food which perishes but for the food which endures to eternal life
03:46
Which the Son of Man will give to you for on him the Father God Set his seal
03:54
Therefore they said to him. What should we do so that we may work the works of God?
04:02
Jesus answered and said to them. This is the work of God that you believe in him whom he has sent
04:10
So they said to him what then do you do for a sign So that we may see and believe you what work do you perform?
04:21
Our fathers ate the manna and the wilderness as it is written. He gave them bread from heaven to eat
04:30
Jesus said to them truly truly I say to you Moses has not given you the bread from heaven
04:36
But my father gives you the true bread from heaven For the bread of heaven is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world
04:49
Then they said to him Lord always give us this bread Jesus said to them
04:54
I am the bread of life He who comes to me will never hunger and he who believes in me will never thirst
05:05
But I say to you that you have seen me and yet you do not believe All that the father gives me will come to me and the one who comes to me.
05:17
I will never cast out For I've come down from heaven not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me
05:26
Now this is the will of him who sent me that all that of all he has given to me
05:32
I lose nothing but raise it up on the last day For this is the will of my father that everyone who sees the
05:41
Son and believes in him will have eternal life And I myself
05:50
Will raise him up on the last day Again, our theme is the reality of false disciples in my proposition is those who believe in Jesus We will never be destroyed we will always live from the moment of conception in the womb a baby has life and from the moment of faith the belief we have eternal life the believer
06:24
My proposition last week was those who work for the food that perishes will likewise perish
06:31
If you're in this life when you're working for things these physical material things that will perish
06:42
Perish you will be destroyed. There's coming a day destruction is coming
06:49
Today's message my goal is to shine the light on the true work of God And if you're like me
06:58
Most of us are That's quirky it's loud
07:05
You're like me you want to feel the work of God that God has in you to fulfill in your life
07:11
You want to fulfill this work? I Think a big problem.
07:21
I might want to do a sermon on this one day just like a top topical a big problem is in the church is that We have the
07:30
Church of God that is desperate need of the power of the Holy Spirit a church filled with the
07:36
Holy Spirit But desperately in need of its power We see that today
07:47
Especially in the reform service Today if you will give me your attention
07:54
We're going to see the first tier of God's will for your life in our outline
08:00
We're going to follow the pattern laid out in the paragraph concerning work now as I named these don't get scared
08:06
We're only going to do four All right, I got seven up here I was going to attempt to try to do all seven
08:18
So I'm gonna name off seven we're going to Basically do three and a half pick back up on four through seven next week
08:28
We're going to see the work Which they perform the work which they want to perform
08:35
The work which they are called to perform the work which God performed the work which they cannot perform the work which
08:46
God must perform and the work which Jesus must perform
08:51
Again, we're going to basically go through four and pick back up on four next week and finish three seven
09:00
Now Let's remember who this group of Jews that Jesus is talking to Jesus is
09:08
Speaking to this group of Jews This is the same group that Jesus same group of Jews that when
09:15
Jesus Took the little boy sack lunch and he fed twenty to twenty five thousand people
09:22
This is the same group that saw with their eyes What Jesus did and also partook by eating
09:33
Jesus had Basically made his disciples get into a boat
09:41
And he made this group of Jews after they ate to leave because they wanted that they recognized
09:47
That he was the prophet like Moses. They wanted to take him by force and make him king Jesus did not come to be an earthly king did not come for earthly crown
09:57
Jesus came for kingdom intrusion Remember go back two or three weeks ago kingdom intrusions
10:05
So in the context before we get into our point verse 25 Says and when they found him on the other side of the sea they said to him rabbi
10:16
When did you come here? So after he made everyone disperse?
10:21
He saw his disciples in trouble on the sea Jesus walks on the sea to their rescue and they
10:32
Because he enters the boat the storm stops they go to the land This group of Jews wake up realize that their meal ticket was gone.
10:39
And so they went looking for him They find him at Capernaum Verse 25 rabbi, when did you get here?
10:49
Jesus picks up in verse 26? This is his answer leaves us to our first point the work which they
10:57
Performed we're going to read verses 26 and 27 Jesus answered them and said
11:08
Truly truly I say to you speaking to this group of Jews Who saw and partook in the bread event you seek me not because you saw the sign
11:22
Remember they saw it Because you ate of the loaves and were filled they partook
11:29
Do not work for the food which perishes but for the food Which endures to eternal life which the
11:38
Son of Man will give to you for on Him speaking of the Son of Man Jesus The Father God set his seal.
11:47
We look last week that this seal was the Holy Spirit. I Didn't write this down Ephesians 2 3rd
11:57
Ephesians 2 11 113 yeah, thank you
12:02
Ephesians 1 13 and also in Ephesians chapter 3 I think it's verse 30.
12:09
The Holy Spirit is the seal of God. I should have wrote that down And so at the baptism of Jesus the
12:18
Holy Spirit came upon Jesus and it was the seal That means that Jesus speaks for God that should be an assigned to those who witnessed the baptism that Jesus speaks for God Hebrews chapter 1 tells us that in these last days
12:35
Jesus speaks for God don't look to prophets don't look to Other Prophets don't look to past prophets.
12:45
Listen to Jesus when Moses Pronounces the prophet. He said when he comes listen to him
12:55
So this text we actually walked through last week in order to preach
13:01
This paragraph we have to be reminded of what this text says if you recall the work which they perform
13:08
Was then following after Jesus for the bread that perishes they woke up they recognized
13:14
Jesus wasn't there their bellies were Rattling they wanted food. So they go and they follow after Jesus this speaking about the natural
13:25
Physical bread physical natural bread perishes and I mentioned this also last week rather you consume it, right?
13:32
You have a plate of food in front of you whether you consume it or it goes bad
13:38
Bread and I would add also any kind of food Perishes it goes bad.
13:44
It gets to the point where you cannot eat of it by inference
13:54
My inference we can conclude that Jesus is telling them to work listen to work
14:03
For the bread that does not perish look at verse 27 do not work for food which perishes
14:12
But for food which endures to eternal life, he's not saying don't work
14:19
He said but work for the food which endures to eternal life Which the
14:26
Son of Man listen will give to you It's a gift But work for the food which endures to eternal life
14:41
Which the Son of Man will give to you For on him the Father God has set his
14:48
Seals and we'll get more into that in a moment Point number two the work which they want to perform verse 28
15:01
Therefore they said to him. What should we do? So that we may work the works of God Question is is what are the works of God that they want to perform?
15:20
It's the work that they saw in part two here They want to know what can they do to be able to take a sack lunch multiply it in order to feed everybody
15:33
They're wanting to know what can they do to heal the sick? What can they do to give sight to the blind?
15:40
More importantly, what can they do to fill their bellies? What can they do to have this gift that Jesus has in order to?
15:47
Perform this work. It sounds like Simon Magus in the book of Acts whenever he sees a
15:54
Paul lay his hand on someone and give them the Holy Spirit. He's like can
16:00
I buy that for me? Can I buy that gift for me? They're wanting to know what can they do in order to do these things?
16:10
They were asking Jesus. What can we do to multiply bread? They did not want to work by the sweat of their face for bread
16:21
They weren't following Jesus for the sake of Jesus we pointed this out last week
16:27
They were following Jesus because the aid of the loaves and were filled. That's what Jesus is but He says truly truly
16:36
I say to you you seek me not because you saw the sign but because you ate of the loaves and were filled
16:43
This is what's called a false Disciple someone who has fallen after Jesus to get something
16:52
Hell well prosperity. Are you coming to Jesus because you're sick and you need help?
16:58
False disciple you come into the Jews because you wanted to get rich false disciple
17:04
You want prosperity's false? disciple Any of those reasons you are a false disciple.
17:11
You're not coming to Jesus for the right reason You follow Jesus for the sake of Jesus or you don't follow
17:20
Jesus at all If they can figure out how to multiply the bread
17:26
That would in turn be less work for them to do because they would no longer have to follow Jesus They wouldn't have to follow around their fish the bread and fish dispenser
17:38
Because they could do it themselves There's no need to follow them if I could do it Right, if someone had the power to bring health wealth and prosperity at the snap of a finger
17:48
What's the point of following Jesus? People Give a false conclusion of what it is to follow
17:56
Jesus TBN has brought more atheists in our nation than secular colleges have made a
18:05
Producing false disciples point number three the work which all
18:11
Listen you included are called to perform. We'll reverse 28 again and 29 together
18:18
Therefore they said to him therefore they said to him What should we do so that we may work the works of God Jesus and it's nothing nothing back to verse 27
18:32
Work for that which doesn't perish right? Here's my answer Jesus said to them.
18:38
This is the work of God. This is what you're to do. Listen pay attention This is the work of God That you believe in him whom he has sent
18:47
That's the work That's the work. That's the work that doesn't perish That's the work
18:54
This is our first tier of God's will for your life to believe in Jesus Christ The work of God is to believe that Jesus is the
19:07
Christ the sons of the Living God The work of God is not for us to multiply bread
19:13
Cast out demons be baptized speak in foreign languages. The work of God is to believe in Jesus Christ Although we are to feed the hungry pray for the sick pray for those who are demon -possessed
19:26
Receive the covenant sign and reach the nations with the gospel But the work of God is to believe in Jesus whom
19:36
God the Father has sent John 3 16 for God speaking of the
19:41
Father so loved the world that he the Father gave He gave his only begotten
19:48
Son, which is Jesus that whoever believes In him shall not perish shall not be destroyed
19:55
But have eternal life at the moment of belief In the same way a child has life at conception
20:05
You and I Unbelievers believe in Christ we have
20:15
Though we might shed this shell The word here for believe in our text concerning the
20:25
Greek word is pastewa Pastewa means to put trust in and commit to And churches aren't teaching that They teach belief as if it's just some kind of an intellectual head nod do you believe in Jesus It's to commit it's to put one's trust in and commit to That's what the
20:58
Greek when the scripture says believe. That's what it means That's what it means
21:06
Questions are you doing the work of God? Are you believing in Jesus Christ is your trust in Christ?
21:12
Are you committed? To Jesus Christ because that's what it means to believe
21:18
Doesn't mean anything else. It's not a tip of the hat. It's not a head nod. It's not some kind of intellectual descent
21:24
It's to commit is to put one's trust in and commit to And So are you doing the will of God are you believing in Jesus Christ is your trust in him
21:38
Is your trust in him? I don't care if you feel it is your trust in him I don't care if you don't feel his presence on you.
21:45
There's your trust in him. Do you believe his word is your trust in Christ? And are you committed to him?
21:55
Point number four the work which God Performed We're gonna take this from verses 30 to 35 we'll begin by reading verses 30 to 31
22:15
Verse 30 So they said to him what then
22:24
To him this is almost laughable. Do you do for a sign? So that we may see and believe
22:34
What work did you perform? Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness as it is written.
22:41
He gave them bread from heaven to eat First thing to notice is is there wanting another sign?
22:49
That's why it's almost laughable This is the same group of Jews who saw with their eyes and partook in Consumption Jesus taking a sack lunch and feeding upwards to 20 to 25 ,000 people
23:07
Okay, you're the bread of life, what are you gonna do do something for us?
23:18
Second maybe it's just the streets in right?
23:24
Maybe it's just because I grew up where I grew up I feel like sometimes Jesus should have been physical, right?
23:32
They point back to Moses They point back to Moses Moses gave us food
23:41
Moses fed When they said in the text he gave them bread from heaven
23:49
The he here is not Moses but God God through the ministry of Moses and the old covenant fed the
23:59
Israelites in the wilderness Jesus seems to be telling them speaking to the
24:06
Jews that he's speaking to telling them that he is not from Moses Though he is the prophet like unto
24:14
Moses. He is not from Moses Moses did not send Jesus but God Sent Jesus This group of Jews wants another sign and they point back to Moses look what
24:32
Moses did for them You should continue to do the same like Moses did for them
24:38
That's the attitude here The question is is What was the purpose behind what took place in the world?
24:48
What is the purpose behind the bread? From heaven, which is met the manna that God I mean that was given to the
24:56
Jews in the wilderness, so The purpose behind it. There's always a purpose if you will turn to your
25:03
Bibles to Exodus 16 you'll be Glad to know that this is our only turn today in the scriptures
25:18
Exodus 16 will read verses 4 through 7 and this will give us the answer to why
25:25
What was the purpose behind God making it rain man? verse 4 then
25:32
Yahweh said to Moses behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you and the people shall go out and gather a day's portion every day
25:47
That I may test them whether or not they will walk in my law
25:54
Now it will be on the sixth day They shall prepare
25:59
What they bring in and it will be twice as much as they gather
26:07
Daily, so a double amount So Moses and Aaron said to all the sons of Israel At evening you will know that Yahweh has brought you out of the land of Egypt and In the morning you will see the glory of Yahweh for he hears your grumblings against Yahweh and What are we that you rumble against us?
26:43
Answer it was to test them to see if they would walk in God's law
26:53
God gave them instructions Every day you wake up for six days
26:58
I mean for five of the days you have to go out and you have to gather enough just for today
27:04
If you gather more It's going to perish by the time you try to eat it later.
27:10
It's not gonna be there. It's gonna perish It's gonna go bad And on the sixth day
27:19
You're to gather enough for two days He's giving them instructions
27:26
And this was to let him know if they were going to keep this law, of course, we know God's sovereignty, right
27:31
We know God knows all things We're looking at it and the storytelling function and we'll dive deep into that next week
27:43
Six days there to gather bread and on the sixth day there to gather enough for the seventh day the
27:48
Sabbath But it was also a sign for them to know that Yahweh had brought them out of Egypt Imagine waking up and all of a sudden as far as your eyes could see bread
28:04
Every day you woke up as far as your eyes could see bread
28:16
What a great sight if we would have been able to be there to see that as far as I could see this But it also made it rain well
28:29
This group of Jews That Jesus is speaking with Saul and partook in the bread sign done by Jesus and they equate it to Moses They are regarding what
28:43
Jesus did when he took a sack lunch and they're placing it let me read that I'm sorry they're regarding what
28:54
Jesus did to what took place in the time of Moses as equal so they're saying what what
29:02
Jesus just did when he fed this this group of Jews with 25 ,000 people they're saying that that is equal to what
29:08
Moses did and there won't more to the bread that came down from heaven which was the manna with the multiplying of bread from the sack lunch they're saying that these two are on equal terms
29:26
Jesus is about to make it clear that the bread which came down from heaven in the time of Moses is not listen it is not pointing to the multiplying bread from a sack lunch but it's pointing to him it's pointing to him look at verses 32 to 33 then
29:52
Jesus said to them truly truly I say to you Moses has not given you speaking to this group of Jews he he's saying you know through the ministry of Moses God fed the
30:10
Israelites in the wilderness I have that in mind verse 32
30:16
Jesus said to them truly truly I say to you the group of Jesus standing in front of him
30:21
Moses has not given you the bread from heaven but my father gives you the true bread from heaven for the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world the manna which we read about in Exodus is the shadow of the true bread comes down out of heaven to give life to the world
30:52
Jesus makes three things clear before he reveals himself to be the bread first Moses did not give them bread he is saying stop looking to Moses Moses said when the prophet comes listen to him
31:12
Moses is pointing to Jesus they recognize that he is the prophet
31:17
Jesus is saying stop looking to Moses stop living in the past I've got this illustration before if you're driving your vehicle and you're looking out your rearview mirror out your back glass or you're turning around looking at your back glass driving forward you're going to wreck the car right here they're
31:39
John 6 we see a car collision we see a crash these G's they have Jesus in front of them the bread of life has come down from heaven and they're looking out the back glass they're focusing on what
31:52
Moses did in his ministry they're not paying attention what's taking place right before them second thing he points out is that God the
32:00
Father has given to them the bread now you can equate this with the sign multiplying the bread but I think the text is clear that it's speaking about Jesus Jesus came down from heaven yeah
32:20
Jesus took a sack lunch and he fed them but that's not the manna because it did not come down Jesus came down from heaven and point number three well my pointer there was the third thing he wants to point out we'll kind of touch on that and that the bread has come down from heaven to give life to the world so this is speaking of the incarnation the
32:43
Creator entered creation the infinite became finite the Bible tells us that that speaking of the
32:51
Word of God the Word was with God and the Word was God that God was the Word that the
32:56
Word be came flesh that the second person of the
33:04
Godhead entered into time the one who created time the one who created all things enters into time and creation and how does he give life to the world those who believe if you're a church
33:26
I was talking with Mary earlier concerning the different words for church I forgot to point out
33:32
Revelation book of Revelation when it speaks about the church it calls in the lampstands the lampstands what does the lamp do guess what
33:45
Christ came to give life to the world if you are the church it's the light that you have is the same way that the moon reflects light is from the
33:56
Sun right the moon doesn't have light the moon borrows light from the
34:02
Sun the Sun's light reflects hits the moon and reflects to us a light that's what the church is to be where lampstands because of who our light is who it is that we receive light from he gives light to the world and yet he's speaking to a group of Jews who are figuratively speaking driving a car looking out their back glass first 34 look at it then they said to him
34:38
Lord again this is laughable always give us this bread notice their expectation for this bread which
34:51
I believe they're they're still stinking and speaking about the physical bread like what took place in the wilderness like what they saw with the sign that Jesus did with taking that sack lunch and beating all of them
35:07
God made it rain manna for 40 years and they're warning Jesus to provide for them bread the same way that that the ministry of Moses they were provided bread for 40 years they're wanting
35:21
Jesus to provide for them bread the bread that gives life not for 40 years for always for always now
35:32
Moses what Moses did wasn't good enough they're wanting it always they can't do it themselves they want
35:38
Jesus with them to always provide for them bread remember
35:44
Jesus just told them not to work for the bread that perishes Jesus told him that the work of God was to believe in him whom
35:55
God has sent and that it was not for the multiplying of bread they would have loved nothing more than for themselves to be able to multiply bread from a sack lunch but since that's not the work of God they wanted
36:10
Jesus to always never stop always continue to provide for them bread this going back to the curse
36:19
Genesis chapter 3 one of the curses was is that they had to earn their bread by the sweat of their brow by the sweat of your brow by this our translation says face by the sweat of your face you will eat bread to them if Jesus is the
36:41
Messiah then he should be greater than Moses they should have not that they should not have to work by the sweat of their face verse 35 and this is where we camp out
36:55
Jesus said to them I am the bread of life he reveals himself to be the bread
37:01
I am the bread of life he who comes to me will never hunger and he who believes in me will never thirst first thing you should notice from this verse is the
37:12
I am statement Jesus says I am now
37:20
I pointed out in a message before how I saw an I am statement and I believe it it's an
37:25
I am statement that theologians don't recognize theologians only recognize seven
37:30
I am statements seven I am statements and they say that this is the first which
37:37
I've already showed you one I am statement that I think they need a reconsider but I have no dog in a little guy according to theologians commentaries this is the first I am statement
37:54
I am the bread of life John 635 I am the light of the world
38:01
John 8 12 I am the door John 10 7 I am the Good Shepherd John 10 11 and 14
38:08
I am the resurrection and the light John 11 25 I am the way the truth and the light
38:15
John 14 6 I am the true vine John 15 1 all have the
38:25
I am statement the Greek word here for I am is a go I me a go
38:31
I me a go and our text is I is a go and this
38:36
I me but a go actually means
38:43
I am by itself and I me means
38:48
I am all by itself right now it translates a go
38:56
I me as because it can it can mean I and it can mean them because it actually just said a go a go or I me
39:03
I me it can either mean I or I am the other one a go excuse me a go to me
39:11
I or I am I me can mean I or I am now the funny thing is is they couldn't use no other words here to say the same thing but they're using a go
39:21
I'm many theologians point back to the fact that this is the statement
39:29
I mean back to the fact that this I am statement points us back to when
39:34
