Good evening and welcome to Sunday Night Bible Study with Pastor Jeresiah Shipley. We are on part two of our study of the
00:05
Holy Spirit and today we're basically going to be proving one thing. That the Holy Spirit indwelling believers was promised, prophesied in the
00:13
Old Testament, and then promised immediately before it happened by Jesus until it was inaugurated at Pentecost.
00:20
So that's what we're here to prove today. So first off, and this will be a relatively short video, the
00:26
Holy Spirit indwells believers in the New Covenant. Remember, in the Old Testament, the Holy Spirit would come upon believers.
00:36
But the Holy Spirit did not indwell believers until after Pentecost. But this was prophesied in the
00:42
Old Testament. You have all these people say, well, Jesus started a new religion and Judaism changed to Christianity, or Christianity...
00:49
No, those who knew their Old Testament knew all along that this is what was supposed to happen.
00:57
You remember, remember there was the Simeon and the old lady, I forgot her name at the moment, at Jesus's birth were expecting him.
01:08
They knew the passages about the Messiah in the Old Testament, so was it with those who were expecting the
01:14
Holy Spirit to come. In Joel, it's prophesied that I'll pour out my spirit, so on and so forth. But I just want to look at a couple key texts in the
01:23
Old Testament about the New Covenant. Now remember, a covenant is a contractual promise.
01:30
Okay, normally there's three members, okay, three parties, if you will. There's one side of the agreement, the other side of the agreement, and the mediator between the two.
01:40
Okay. Well, here is Jeremiah, 600 years, 580 years before Jesus was born, speaking about the
01:49
New Covenant. Not talking about the Sinai Covenant with the law. This is speaking of the New Covenant, long before it ever happened.
01:58
Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah. Not like the covenant that I made with the fathers on the day
02:05
I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt. My covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, declares the
02:12
Lord. For this is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel to those days, declares the Lord. I'll put my law within them, and I'll write it on their hearts, and I'll be their
02:21
God, and they will be my people. And no longer will each one teach his neighbor and each to his brother, saying,
02:26
Know the Lord, for they'll all know me, from the least to the greatest, declares the Lord. I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.
02:34
Remember, now that God has amnesia, what is meant by that is the high priest on Yom Kippur had to go into the
02:41
Holy of Holies year after year after year after year to make atonement for sin. He had to do it year after year because they kept on sinning.
02:47
But here, Hebrew says it was one eternal sacrifice, Jesus is the eternal sacrifice, and one high priest.
02:55
He holds the high priest office forever. We don't need a new one. And he remembers our sin no more.
03:01
There's not a need for continual sacrifice. Jesus is that eternal sacrifice, eternal sacrifice.
03:08
Well, what is the sign of the New Covenant, Jeremiah? That they will all know the
03:13
Lord. See, anybody, an atheist, Satan, knows the Bible. But through the
03:19
Holy Spirit, we can know the Bible. And though in the Old Testament, the
03:25
Holy Spirit still influenced believers, it's a different type of indwelling, tabernacling in the
03:31
New Covenant. It is prophesied here in Jeremiah. It's also explicitly prophesied in the book of Ezekiel, chapter 36.
03:43
This is Ezekiel 36, verse 26. Still centuries before the
03:49
Messiah came. I will give you a new heart and a new spirit I'll put within you, and I will move the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.
03:58
I will put my spirit within you and cause you to walk in my statutes and carefully obey my rules.
04:04
It goes on to talk about fulfillments through ethnic Israel, but I will put my spirit within you.
04:13
The indwelling Holy Spirit was always prophesied. It wasn't anything new. Peter quotes the book of Joel.
04:21
On the day of Pentecost, I will pour out my spirit and they will all know the
04:27
Lord. So this was prophesied long before Jesus ever got here. And then before Jesus left, we read a little bit of this before, he said things like this.
04:38
This is John 14, 16. And I'll ask the Father and he'll give you another helper or paraclete or comforter or advocate to be with you forever.
04:51
Even the spirit of truth whom the world cannot receive because it neither knows him or sees him. You know him for he dwells with you and will be in you.
05:02
You know him because he dwells in you. Jesus, notice Father, Son, Holy Spirit right there in that verse.
05:10
Jesus saying the counselor, the Holy Spirit will be coming. In verse 26 he says, but the counselor, the
05:15
Holy Spirit, the Father will send him in my name. He will teach you all things and remind you of everything I've told you.
05:23
He says in chapter 16 in verse, let's see.
05:39
Yeah. Well, chapter 15 verse 26, when the helper comes whom
05:46
I will send to you from the Father of spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me and you will also bear witness because you have been with me from the beginning.
05:56
What does the Holy Spirit do? He bears witness about Jesus. According to chapter 14, he reminds us of everything
06:05
Jesus taught us. The Holy Spirit doesn't do anything new in the sense of his own type of thing separate from the rest of the triune
06:15
God. He bears witness about Jesus. He reminds us what
06:20
Jesus has taught us. He proceeds from the Father. There is unity in the Godhead on this. If anyone says
06:27
I have something from the spirit that is not in the line of good that Jesus said, it is not from the Holy Spirit because the
06:32
Bible says right here verse 14, chapter 14 verse 26, he'll teach you all things and remind you of everything
06:39
I've told you Jesus said. In chapter 15 verse 26, he proceeds from the Father and he bears witness about me.
06:46
That's what the Holy Spirit does. He bears witness about me, about Jesus. Yeah, not me,
06:52
Jesus. So we have Jeremiah and Ezekiel and Joel prophesying that in the new covenant the
07:02
Holy Spirit will indwell believers. We have Jesus saying hey that time's coming when I leave when
07:08
I leave the Advocate, the Counselor, the Holy Spirit will come. And his role will be indwelling us.
07:18
Now, that is why it is impossible to live the Christian life without the Holy Spirit because he is in our sanctification.
07:26
He is the one teaching us, guiding us, indwelling us, sanctifying us. Remember the
07:35
Holy Spirit himself is a person in the Godhead. Remember God is one being in three persons.
07:42
That's why in the book of Acts, Peter can look at Ananias and Sapphira and say you have lied to the
07:47
Holy Spirit and in the same breath say you've lied to God because the Holy Spirit is God.
07:53
He is not the same person as the Father and Son. He's the same being, the same God as the
07:59
Father and Son. And though they each have distinct personalities and roles, maybe I should say jobs, there is unity in that.
08:08
Just like in salvation, all three are involved in our salvation. The Father chooses us, elects us, the
08:14
Son dies for us, the Holy Spirit indwells us and seals us. And let's look at that real quick.
08:23
In Ephesians chapter 1 verse 13,
08:34
When you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, you were sealed with the promised
08:40
Holy Spirit. The promised Holy Spirit who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it to the praise of his glory.
08:50
It's like a letter with that melted piece of wax in the king's signet ring. Okay, it was sealed.
08:58
The king, think of him like the father, didn't walk with that letter, but that was the seal that it was from him.
09:05
Well, the Holy Spirit is that seal that we are of God and he stays with us when we are sealed until the day of redemption.
09:13
That's how he is our guarantee. So the whole purpose of this video was to remind you guys that the
09:19
Holy Spirit's indwelling in us was prophesied in the Old Testament about the New Covenant, Jeremiah 31,
09:25
Ezekiel 36, Joel chapter 2, etc. And that Jesus immediately prophesied, promised that he was coming in the gospel of John and elsewhere,
09:34
John 14, 15, and 16. So when we get to Pentecost, okay, it is not a new fad that started.
09:46
It's according to the eternal plan of God. Like it always was before.
09:52
Alright, so next week, we'll start talking about the spiritual gifts and what the
09:58
Spirit is doing in his church. I love you guys very much. As always, like, subscribe, share, all that stuff.
10:06
Thank you guys for allowing us to minister to you guys and always think about, dwell about what the
10:16
Bible says. Forget about what I say or anyone else says. Don't forget to tune in Thursday for Wow Moment.
